It's all fun and games until someone is left a whimpering mess. Five years ago, The American Scream debuted at Fantastic Fest. Under the direction of Michael Paul Stephenson (Best Worst Movie), it lovingly documented the growing phenomena of handcrafted haunted houses. As I wrote in my review: "The reaction of the community to the haunted houses, professional-looking and handmade and customized and, yes, more often goofy and silly than actually scary, says more about the homeowners, their families, and their neighborhood than a volume of scholarly sociological observations." My, how times have changed. Directed by Jon Schnitzer, Haunters: The Art of the Scare examines and updates the same phenomena, revolving around three different aspects: a family-run haunted house, similar to the one in The...

"Now we've got this entire, dark, almost underground world of extreme haunts." Who doesn't love haunted houses? Oh right, most people who don't like to be scared. An official trailer has debuted for a documentary called Haunters: The Art Of The Scare, a fun exploration and celebration of the horrifying glory of (Halloween) haunted houses. It starts by taking a look at the popularity of haunted houses, then goes deeper into exploring the rise of extreme haunted house experiences, that go beyond the normal into the realm of truly terrifying. This reminds me of another doc about haunted houses from just a few years ago, titled The American Scream. However, this one seems to go even further into the extreme and show us some of the latest utterly frightening experiences. The film will premiere at FantasticFest before hitting VOD in October. Here's the trailer for Jon Schnitzer's documentary Haunters: The Art Of The Scare,...

In the Netflix original film Girlfriend’s Day, Bob Odenkirk stars as a Ray Wentworth, a washed-up greeting card writer who gets caught up in a web of eccentric intrigue and murder when he enters the race to create the perfect card for a new holiday: Girlfriend’s Day. Directed by documentarian Michael Paul Stephenson (Best Worst Movie, The American Scream), the film not only creates the entirely new genre of “greeting card comedy noir,” it’s also got the sort of dark, deadpan vibe that appeals to our sensibilities here at The A.V. Club.
And, in a roundabout way, The A.V. Club helped make the film happen. You see, after reading an interview with Bob Odenkirk published on this very site, Stephenson reached out to him to invite him to the L.A. premiere of The American Scream. After the screening, Odenkirk asked Stephenson if he had...

Netflix has a new film on the way starring Bob Odenkirk, and it looks pretty damn funny! Here's the official synopsis...
In the Netflix original film, Girlfriend's Day, director Michael Paul Stephenson (The American Scream) invites you to experience a clever and quirky story about love, loss and the worst place to get a paper cut. Meet Ray Wentworth (Bob Odenkirk), once a king of the wordsmith world, and now a down-on-his-luck romance card writer. In an effort to recapture the feelings that once made him the greatest, he gets entangled in a web of murder and deceit as writers vie to create the perfect card for a newly crowned holiday: Girlfriend’s Day.
You'll see a lot of familiar faces in this trailer like Andy Richter and Breaking Bad's Stephen Michael Quezada! The whole trailer is just so dark and goofy, I love it! The paper cut scene alone had me cracking up.

Scream Factory’s new Blu-ray release of two Italian films from 1990, the mad scientist creature feature Metamorphosis and the haunted house movie Beyond Darkness, may very well be the first time many horror fans have ever heard of either movie. The major common factor between the two is the presence of actor Gene Lebrock as the lead in both. In fact, these movies represent two of his seven credited acting roles, which means that by picking up Scream Factory’s double feature Blu-ray disc, you will effectively own more than 20% of Gene Lebrock’s filmography. It’s important to set goals.
In 1990’s Metamorphosis, he plays Dr. Peter Houseman, a brilliant scientist trying to perfect a serum that will stop the aging process. In order to test his experiment, Houseman administers the serum to himself and before you can say “Brundlefly,” begins undergoing a… what’s the word?… not “change”… not “transformation”… at any rate,...

Horror fans are hardcore, and serious genre lovers are not afraid to display and share their affection for all things horror. One of the best recent examples of this is the outstanding documentary The American Scream, which chronicles the challenges, frustrations, and joys of people who run haunted houses. The new documentary PsychoPath covers similar territory.
It features the adventures of Victor Marquez, a garbageman in Oklahoma with a lifelong dream of going to Hollywood and getting into the makeup effects business. While he never made it to California, he does decide to purchase acreage in his home state and create a haunted house that allows him to share his talents.

"No, you and your friends sitting in there pretending to be elves and fairies, that's what's disturbing." From the popular podcast Nerdist, featuring comedian Chris Hardwick, comes their first feature length film, Zero Charisma, and it's right in their wheelhouse. A manchild of a nerd (Sam Eidson) living with his grandmother finds his comfy position as the Game Master of a role-playing game threatened when a hipster nerd named Miles (Garrett Graham) joins the group and becomes the coolest kid at the table. This looks like a hilarious, low budget comedy with all the right notes to hit with nerds and general audiences. Watch! Here's the first trailer for Katie Graham & Andrew Matthews' Zero Charisma, originally from Apple: And here's the epic poster for the nerdy comedy: Katie Graham (cinematographer on The American Scream) and Andrew Matthews (editor of The Best Worst Movie) enter narrative filmmaking as directors of the comedy Zero Charisma,...

This micro-budget, homespun geeksploitation comedy about a Metal-loving game master named Scott Weidemeyer, plunges so deep into the heart of nerd culture, it might just be the best Geek film in years. Zero Charisma simultaneously, ridicules and celebrates Dungeons & Dragons-style role playing through the eyes of a neurotic Game Master who lives in his grandmother’s house, works a lousy job at a donut shop, and spends all his free time as the supreme Game Master guiding his role-players through a journey of fantasy and adventure in a game he’s spent three years working on. However, when one of his buddies leaves the group after his wife threatens for divorce, neo-nerd hipster Miles (Garrett Graham) joins in, making Scott extremely jealous of the admiration his colleagues have for him. I know I have said it before so I’ll try and refrain from repeating myself too much. I love haunted attractions and even moreso, home haunts. Every Halloween I would dress up my mother’s yard to scare kids and even their parents on one of my favorite holidays. Last year, you might remember us talking about a documentary that aired on Chiller called The American Scream, which premiered at Fantastic Fest. While that film took a look at the people who make home haunts in their front & backyards, the new documentary, Monsters Wanted, takes a look at the organizers of a outdoor haunted attraction.

HBO.s Mr. Show With Bob And David was so amazing, it makes Bob Odenkirk.s few career missteps completely forgettable, and after years of behind-the-scenes work, his recurring role as Saul Goodman on AMC.s Breaking Bad is the series. most oft-utilized respite from tension, and we.re hoping that spinoff comes through. Movies about geeks have never been particularly flattering. Even in films like Revenge of the Nerds where the nerds win the day, there is plenty of dramatic license taken to make them badass so they can win the girl. But stories that cut to the heart of geekdom and reveal what true nerdery is all about? Those are extremely rare. It's even rarer when you find yourself pulling for the geek at the heart of those stories, despite everything else.
Luckily this year at SXSW we stumbled across Zero Charisma, a film about a gamemaster struggling to keep his RPG campaign alive after losing one of the main players. But problems arise when he has to battle with the replacement for popularity, and his world begins to unravel. The entire movie hinges on the fantastic performance of Sam Eidson as Scott Weidemeyer, and while he might seem a bit over the top,...

One of the more intriguing films listed in this year’s just-announced South By Southwest Film Festival lineup is Zero Charisma. Why? Well, partly because it’s an indie-comedy about role-playing games (and it’s not every day you get to see one of those). And partly because it’s directed by Andrew Matthews and Katie Graham, who worked as, respectively, the director of photography and the editor on the excellent 2009 Troll 2 documentary Best Worst Movie. (Zero Charisma is also exec produced by Best Worst director and producer, Michael and Lindsay Stephenson.)

Ah FrightFest how I love thee. Yes, my annual excursion to Scotland for Glasgow FrightFest continues this year, and I couldn’t be happier! This years line-up is strong, Very strong, with plenty of variety and some great film picks by Alan, Ian, Paul and Greg. Plus the appearance of Norwegian drama Hellsfjord! Of all the films showing this year there’s one that I most excited to see – Detention of the Dead… I’ve tried my hardest to cover the film as much as possible over the past year as it looks like my “cup of tea”, so for it to show at FrightFest is awesome (although to be fair I already knew that was in the line-up). However the real big surprise is the appearance of Neil Jordan’s Byzantium in the line-up – the Scottish crowd is notoriously “blood-thirtsy” so I hope Jordan’s film isn’t too sedate for the Glasgow crowd.

Here is a collection of a dozen of the best documentaries I saw in 2012. It's not a "best of the year" list. Just some good memories of these films.
I will not burden you again with another complaint about lists. More than ever, I despise them because they shift focus away from a film and toward a list. When I recently caught up with "Django Unchained," for example, I gave it four stars. The comments section was overrun with readers asking if that meant it was now on my Top Ten list. One reader insisted on knowing which title it replaced. Although the piece was some 2,000 words long, another reader insisted he still wanted to see "my official review."
All I can do with any film is tell you that I've seen it, and what I thought about it. If it sounds interesting to you, it might be worth seeking out.

Another year winds down, and it's time to reflect on the good, the bad, and the ugly of 2012's horror offerings. We're giving you ten different lists this time, and per usual they come in a variety of formats, each reflecting the unique styles of our writers. We've also compiled them to come up with the year's overall winners and losers.
And don't be lazy by just reading along! Give us your own lists in the comments section below. We want to hear what you thought of the year in which we dodged the Mayan apocalypse but find our beloved genre facing some dark days as violent movies, video games, TV shows, etc., are coming under increased scrutiny following recent events.
But back to the matter at hand; we averaged out the top and bottom five vote getters on everyone's lists, and here are the results:

Michael Stephenson has only directed two feature films, but he's already proven to have a remarkable knack for taking seemingly mundane stories and finding the utterly fascinating and surprisingly heartfelt magic within. With Best Worst Movie he took on the life and legacy of Troll 2, a movie people love to hate, and turned it into a smart, emotional portrait of how one movie, no matter how bad it is, can mean so many things to so many different people. With The American Scream he tells the untold story of three small families in a sleepy Massachusetts town who make home made haunted houses every Halloween. The American Scream had its world premiere earlier this year at Fantastic Fest (where we spoke with Stephenson about the film) before heading to Chiller TV, but don't...

As we head into the final week of holiday shopping, there are plenty of last-minute releases hitting DVD and Blu-ray just in time to end up as potential Christmas gifts. The biggest titles include Len Wiseman's Total Recall remake and Paul W.S. Anderson's Resident Evil: Retribution, along with the Joseph Gordon-Levitt bike courier thriller Premium Rush. Looking beyond that, we also have the well-received musical comedy Pitch Perfect, Spike Lee's Red Hook Summer and William Friedkin's Killer Joe. (Take note that a handful of these don't actually hit stores until Friday.) Also keep an eye out for new seasons of Shameless, Californication and The Life and Times of Tim, and if that's not enough, Michael Stephenson's haunted house documentary The American Scream is also out this week, available exclusively through the movie's official website. One of my highlighted films of 2012 was the heartwarming documentary about home haunters in the film The American Scream. The American Scream focuses on three houses on the same street over the course of the month of October before Halloween night which is when they reveal their home haunts to the neighborhood. While you can see the film streaming on Netflix, there is a follow-up with one of the main home haunters on the Blu-Ray/DVD combo pack that I am definitely interested in checking out. Also, if you buy the combo directly from the movie’s website, you get a jump on the regular retail market until Fall 2013!! Read the press release below or click on the image of the Blu-Ray’s to order it now…if you dare! (insert evil laughter)

Everyone has their favorite holiday, whether it's Thanksgiving, Christmas, or any holiday where one gets the day off from work. While both kids and adults alike look forward to Halloween, there are some among us that really really love Halloween. You know the house. A front yard filled with gravestones where ghouls and zombies leap out from the shadows and make little kids (and adults) scream in terror. Maybe it's even the house that parents with little kids actively avoid. When a hobby goes from mild fun to an extreme obsession that goes way over the top is the subject of the documentary The American Scream.

Last year, Indiewire inaugurated a new tradition by singling out ">13 recent indie horror movies available in time for Halloween. The truth is that great horror cinema surfaces all year long, but the national holiday presents a nice opportunity to champion films too often dismissed by the faint-hearted mainstream. Of course, there's a distinction between cheap thrills and seriously chilling cinema; the following suggestions fall into the latter category. Use this as your official Halloween screening list and get ready to get spooked (or if you think you know better, don't hesitate to share some recommendations in the comments section below). We aren't saying these are all the *best* movies of the year, but if the majority of them don't freak you out…you might be pretty scary yourself. "The American Scream" Michael Paul Stephenson's first documentary, "Best Worst Movie," focused on the cult fascination with the cheesy...

The American Scream, the award-winning documentary from Michael Stephenson, will enjoy its Asian premiere in Hong Kong later this month, as part of a special Halloween-themed double bill with Tom Holland's original Fright Night, on 23 October. This special, one-off screening is being organised by independent collective "Hong Kong Alt Screenings" - of which I proudly count myself a member - who earlier this year hosted the first official screening anywhere in Asia of Stephenson's hilarious Best Worst Movie, together with cult classic Troll 2. home haunter: one who transforms the place where one lives with the intent to invoke fear upon visitors as entertainment on the holiday of Halloween.
With the exception of the classic cartoon It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, rarely are Halloween themed films described as “heart warming,” but The American Scream is an outstanding exception. This original documentary follows three families in the small town of Fairhaven, Massachusetts. These three families all share a common love for Halloween and the art of home haunting, or transforming their homes into frightening displays for the benefit of trick or treaters. The levels of expertise, and even the motivation for each of these families’ interest in such an undertaking varies greatly, but the one universal trait is the pleasure and joy they get from seeing visitors react to what they have created and having fun in the process.

One of my favorite nights of the year, along with many horror fans, is Halloween. There is just something magical about the night. Granted, the whole month is great for horror fans because usually as a grown up that means we will be will be asked for movie advice or what to do in order to celebrate the month and Halloween. For eleven months out of the year, we may be looked at differently by the general public but for October we seemly feel that we become important. The American Scream is a documentary, which spans over the whole month of October, about three groups of home haunters build up their haunts and their props while trying to balance their normal lives. Home Haunters are a unique blend of people who love Halloween or maybe just the thrill that it gives them when they become a main focus for one...
