Its like "The Hunger Games" but actually good.
invisibleunicornninja9 April 2018
This show is extremely entertaining. The animation isn't as good as it could've been (that might be because I watched rips on YouTube though) but the story and concept is great. There are a lot of contradictory scenes where it seems like the writers forgot what had happened in previous episodes and its really funny in its incompetence (ex. there is an episode where two of the main characters jump out of a 3rd or 4th story window and are fine but in a later episode when they are on the 2nd floor they're worried about falling though a big hole in the floor even though they're running for their lives). The characters can also be inconsistent, which is also funny in its own way. What really makes this show is the story and how insane it gets. There is so much crazy in this show and I love it. If you're a fan of the absurd and dark humor and can put up with some plot holes - then I'd highly recommend this show.

Future Diary - Another Survival Game x Love Story
Cat-Wings31 August 2013
Future Diary (Mirai Nikki) is an anime that was on between October 2011 and April 2012. It's a survival game among 12 people who have mobile phones receiving diaries about what will happen in several minutes within the future. Each future diary holder receives a future from a different perspective. So, the diary holders fight each other while avoiding their expected death by knowing the future.

The survival concept in a story such as Battle Royal, where everyone has to be killed until only one person remains, is not new. So you may figure it would be another survival story where only the protagonist survives in the end. But this survival game is interesting in that the diary folders use techniques in order to change their expected future. Another striking thing that stands out is that Yuno's love toward Yukiteru goes out of control to be psychotic and violent, showing her affection crazily to him. Although a typical 'Yandere' character like Yuno would be annoying, I could even develop a love for this crazy character toward the end. I think it's a new type of survival story in that the audience could be moved by a 'Yandere' girl.

Meanwhile, I couldn't help but compare the character Aru Akise from Future diary with Kaoru Nagisa from Neon Genesis Evangelion because both are played by the same voice actor, and the character's personality and the feature are very similar. Once I started comparing the two anime, I realized that there are other common points between the two. The protagonist, Yukiteru is shy, naive, cries easily, and a negative person, which is similar to Shinji in Evengelion. A similar character to Asuka found in Future Diary would be Yuno Gasai in that she is strong, sort of crazy, and strong-minded. You might find some other similarities while you watch Future Diary after Evengelion.

While I was wondering if the two anime have some common themes in the characters, I was drawn to the story of Future Diary towards the end. It is painful and upsetting to see Yuno's unruly character where she doesn't care for anybody but Yukiteru, and she cannot be in love with him. But I felt like I could accept everything from her in the end.

Overall, I like Future Diary. So I give it 8 stars.

Enjoyable but Overrated
spawnfire0124 October 2014
Mirai Nikki is an action series depicting a battle royale between selected individuals who own diaries that tell the future. Overall, the show combines elements of science fiction, action, suspense, romance, and comedy to some success; however, it had several weaknesses that marred the show. Unfortunately, many of the action sequences were either irritatingly unintelligent or plain impossible, with kids dodging bullets and fighting while reading their diaries. Moreover, the whole seriousness and suspense of the plot was ruined by the banal romantic comedy and a cute little girl recapping the story's events every episode. Additionally, the whole middle part of the series dragged on without any remarkable moments: the storyline was somewhat bland, the deaths were anti-climactic, and a suspenseful mood was lacking. The most detrimental weakness, however, was the logical fallacies in the plot, especially noticeable during the turning point at the end. These gaping plot holes took from the credibility of the anime and made it seem like more of a pretentious attempt at seeming clever rather than a genuinely brilliant masterpiece.

Despite these weak points, Mirai Nikki did nonetheless provide quite some entertainment, as the show was packed with intense violence, exciting romance, and bits of comedy. Even with the plot holes, the ending episodes were remarkable, providing a shocking turn of events that made enough sense to be memorable and mind-blowing. In fact, if the series was judged based on the ending itself, I wouldn't hesitate to give it an 8/10, but I have to evaluate the entire experience of the series as a whole. This series, additionally, had amazing character development, vivid imagery, and an impressive OST (most notably, the opening theme). Overall, this anime is an amusing show that provides cheap thrills and lighthearted humor, but does not deliver enough to deserve the excessive praise it has received.

Absolutely insane
bayan-rafeh9211 December 2013
I still have no idea how to feel about this show. The hero is given a diary which can predict the future, and is thrown into a battle with 11 others where the last survivor becomes God.

This anime is different in that the main character is not equipped to handle the situation at all. In most shows, anime or otherwise, they never throw at the hero more than s/he can handle, no matter how ill equipped they seem at first. The hero here has no natural talent, nor is he given time to explore his power. From the start he is thrown into survival mode and makes most choices out of desperation, and even though it seems for a while in the middle of the show he has a handle on everything, he loses his grip and inevitably digs himself into a hole he can't climb out of.

The characters are insane, and the relationships they develop are even more so. The appeal is watching a character trying to be moral in a situation where doing so gets you killed and starting to hate him for it. It's seeing him slowly but surely lose his moral compass and become just another contestant, and watching him regret it later. It's fighting the urge to shout "you moron!" as he falls deeper into a toxic relationship and yet empathizing with him.

This show is absolutely insane, and I love it.

really cool thriller style anime
joelherro16 April 2012
its kinda hard to review this without giving too much away...plus the 1st episode aired 26wks ago now, so my memory of how it started is a bit hazy...

Yukiteru loves playing around on his phone and has an imaginary friend named Deus. But Deus is not imaginary, and Yuki gets caught up in a strange battle royale type game where the players, all holding phone diaries like Yuki's, must kill each other off until the final survivor becomes a God. Their diaries each predict the future in different ways, allowing them to evade or capture each other. One of Yuki's cute classmates, Gasai Yuno, has a diary and is strangely attracted to Yuki for reasons he can't quite understand...

This showed rocked! Yuno is an awesome femme fatale, and all the other characters are well written too...the animation is great and the story action packed and violent (probably not for kids)...Yuki is a bit of a pussy, but he mans up over time...still, you can't blame him for being a bit hesitant to kill friends and strangers alike...watch this for sure!

You want to know why it's not a 9? It has the worse main character I've ever seen. I just want to punch his face every two minutes. Other than that it's great.

Dark Psychological Anime
adamvwj26 December 2013
This anime is rather dark and psychological meaning it involves a lot of thinking. If you enjoyed watching death note then this anime is definitely one to watch.

Story: 5/5 The first few episodes tend to leave the viewer with a dazed confused puzzlement. It starts off fast, episode one sets the plot and episode two starts the craziness already. It starts off really fast but slows down in the middle and then picks up extremely fast again. Overall, the story follows two young kids in their development of their "future diaries." Let me say, the plots are always twisting. Its a dark twisted story of survival. Lots of action, thriller, suspense, supernatural, and romance. There's a very dark overall mood in the anime with this overlooming supernatural sense. However, the writers effectively at the same time are able to make the anime relatable to the viewers through a mundane sense of psychology and situations that occur. That being said despite the serious tone set there are moments when the characters seem mundane living their daily lives and when it gets crazy things get messed up fast.

Animation: 5/5 Keep in mind its a rather new anime and very short. The quality is superb and that being said please don't watch for the faint of heart. There's blood, lots of it. It's not super gore heavy but man... when it does get bloody it gets pretty gory. The colors are a tad dark, everything is on the darker side mainly but they do get vivid from time to time.

Voice and Sound: 5/5 Great voicing and sound. Haven't seen the dubbed version (i only watch the subbed). But the voices are perfect for each character and the development. Sound is sweet, and sadly i don't pay attention to the music. But that being said, the music must work perfectly because they never annoyed me.

Overall: 9/10 The anime is superb and very thoughtprovoking. At first the anime seems to be a slasher film but the twists and turns and underlying meaning and themes nags at the viewers mind. It has the action that Death Note was missing and added the dark element that I personally prefer that Code Geass was missing. The story is simple but the best thing about the anime is the development of the main characters. The biggest twist and turns are from the actual characters themselves and once the puzzle is pieced together it is sure to make the viewer go "damn....so thats what happened" Only reason i don't give it a full ten is due to the gaps and holes. The anime picks up way to fast and the ending seems inconclusive (though that is how the manga ends). There could've been a few more episodes to piece the story better. But overall a great short series thats both dark and thought provoking with a little more gore and action than Death Note.

Started promising
masonfewel3 May 2021
For around the first 2/3 or so, I was thinking that this could be one of the greatest anime created, if the ending held up. However, that did not happen. It wasn't hard to follow, but I feel like it tried to make itself more complicated just to be more complicated. And I didn't exactly hate the ending, but it wasn't good either. It did have a really good twist, and overall I'm glad I watched it, but what could have been great turned into something that wasn't all that special towards the end.

Great plot twists and characters
EpimetheusA110 April 2021
Wow. What an amazing tale- I was riveted, from start to finish. The twists and turns were enthralling and each of the characters became favorites. What a clever little tale. Not for the faint of heart, this isn't a show for kids, despite having two young lead characters. The themes this show presents are deep and visceral. Quite an experience, as a whole.

Could've been amazing.
jace-rynearson20 November 2017
I didn't hate this show. It started out FANTASTIC and stayed fantastic for a very long time. It started off relying on suspense and psychological horror which couldn't be more effective. The story and characters were also really well-done and in-depth, and it didn't take itself too seriously.

However, the reason I gave it 7 stars is because that was only for the first 3/4 of the show, and the last 1/4 is when there were some pretty big problems.

Near the end of the show, the main character changed from his timid, merciful personality to more of a warlord. While I like development and changes in characters, that was a little too much, I would've liked to stay the way he was instead. And before that they didn't really keep the established character he was supposed to be. Also, the aforementioned psychological horror changed to just action instead and a very anticlimactic apocalypse plot.

However, by episode 22, I was just plain mad. Episode 22 COMPLETELY messed up the character development, killed off literally every character you've come to know and love, and made the main character borderline despised (not to give any spoilers). The killing off of other characters quickly changed from emotional to just downright excessive. There were so many reasons to avoid killing off those 4 characters, so many other, much better ways for what should happen. But instead, that happened, and it made me really mad.

From then on, the whole show kind of went downhill. The ending was somewhat satisfying, but not very satisfying because it still already ruined the established characters and story line. The OVA at the end didn't fix any problems, and kind of instead made all new ones.

However, it wasn't the anime's fault, it was completely faithful to it's source material. But even so, the creator should've known to be consistent and not kill off so many characters.

All in all, it wasn't a bad show, but it was so close to being a perfect show. It started off great, got better around the middle, but then got bad near the end. It would've been one of my favorite anime if it didn't have so many mistakes in the rest of the plot.

Honestly , i have no idea why it only has a 7.8 rating
jan-haspel14 July 2018
Sure , it isnt better than stein's gate which also has a very decent rating if u ask me (8.7) but that doesnt mean that an avrg of 8 is enough. The problem with the show is that many hate on yuki for being a total beach , or the fact that yuno is such a reckless bloodthirsty sociopath. But the true meaning of this anime is much deeper. It portrays how everyone thinks about what is good and evil , we see a different storyline and ambition from each diary holder and how they will ''change the world to a better place''. We see how gods play with our lives , and how we can change our future through our actions. You know its a good anime when the ''post anime depression'' hits u hard , for me it took 3 days to recover .And the ending wasnt so good either , rly fast , not rly explanatory but overall the outcome we all anticipated for. Plus Yuno Gasai is #bestgal I dont think it should be above 9/10 but for the sake of this unfair rating i will place a 10/10

Idea and story with potential
rookescanor5 February 2019
The concept of the story is the basis for the most if not the entirety of the show, and it keeps up to the mark. Mirai Nikki depicts a really interesting concept of 'Future Diaries; that predict the timeline of the show, mixed with a Battle Royale between the users of the said abilities.

The limelight of the story belongs to the eccentric Yuno Gasai (you'll know what I mean eccentric), the co-protagonist who plays an equivalent role if not more than the other co-protagonist, Yukiteru Amano, a stereotypical shy guy character, an often character-trope of modern anime. Despite the mundane expected characteristics of Yukitaro, he indeed develops through the story, which leads to a justified ending of the entire plot.

The side-characters play a fundamental role of in the climbing-up of the protagonists in the Battle Royale genre, but it is not linear to the audience's expectations. That's where the elements of gore and psychological thriller comes in, the latter overlapping with romance. The said elements provide an uncertainty to the flow of the story to audience, bringing in wild and bizarre changes in the storyline, which makes things interesting.

The pacing of the 26-episode seemed pretty okay until the story in the later episodes take an out-of-the-world turn of events, often a reason disappointed in anime nowadays. Similar occurrences were observed in anime like the recent DARLING IN THE FRANXX (which is a really good example of the folly in context), or GURREN LAGANN. The story goes linear in development until things jump beyond comprehension from the expected storyline to make things complicated. In the circumstance, the writers simply doesn't want to keep things simple anymore, but put in some other worldly desires to make things sci-fi beyond common scene. An unusual exception to this folly is the story of STEINS;GATE, which maintains control over the plot and development despite the said show being pretty sci-fi from the beginning.

Enough with the ranting, MIRAI NIKKI has a decent ending justified to the consequences (not inclusive of any dark side) of the storyline. It will pique interest for gore and psycho-thriller lovers and I'll recommend anime/manga enthusiasts to give the story a shot, to whoever haven't viewed it.

Are these high ratings for real?
nicolodresp9 February 2021
What the hell is wrong with people to give this crazy trash show anything above 4 points? Couldn't make it past 4 episodes because of the sheer nonsense, unnecessary "fanservice" and bad one dimensional characters. Someone give this a ten and compared it to Death Note. Yeah, sure. I clearly remember a similar scene from Death Note where some crazy chick has rockets flying out of her skirt to only fly away on a motorbike which she apparently also must have hidden somewhere in her undergarments. Or the scene where the female and male protagonist go swimming for no apparent reason other to show that the female protagonist has unbelievably big breasts, loses her bikini and presses onto the male protagonist. Completely psychological thriller vibes like death note, sure. More like making me questioning the creator's sanity as well as my own. This has more in common with The Room than Death Note. Although Death Note is complete fantasy, it is more realistic and believable than anything I have seen here. The first three episodes give me a migrane of epic proportions that I had to take medicine and go to bed.

So yeah, if that's something for you, go for it. You may just go completely nuts watching this, only not in a good way.

a good show , wonder why people have just given it 7.5 stars!!
shardul-negi2130 November 2013
well how, do i start. most people i find didn't find mirai nikki appealing or the story commending enough to be watched. I think the problem was, the show carried a way too much afloat then most could possibly digest. Mirai nikki is a show that demonstrate a lot deep then we can possibly anticipate in what god is, and how it might possibly work. each can have a different perspective about the show as i see that it has managed a mere 7.5 stars. But look at it with a different outlook and try to make through the possible meaning the show. you will eventually find it much more figurative and think over the possible powers that lead our lives. go for it, you will realize the meaning in first four episodes to know your taste.

A bloody good time... if you're into psychopaths
briggnalle18 May 2016
Every once in awhile I will watch an anime, and at the end of watching it I will sometimes think, 'What the heck did I just watch'? But in the end, I will look back and think of how complex the story was and how it was well thought-out until the very end. The Future Diary is one of those animes.

Here we have a bunch of people trying to kill each other to become a god, using different diaries that can tell the future. This story is very well thought out but also extremely complex in its own right. There will always be a feeling of suspense and you wonder what is going to happen next. You will think, what will happen now, and after that, and after that. But every time a question is answered, immediately another takes its place to basically try and blow you away. And sometimes this works, and sometimes it doesn't. That being said there were plenty of moments when I was like, 'What?' And it forced me to think, and question my previous answers which made the show a little bit more complicated until it all tied together in the end... sort of. Now the constant suspension and turn-around moments in this anime may throw some people off, but all in all this is a very enjoyable anime. If you are not shy of blood, suspense, sex, and complete mind-boggling questions, then this is a show for you. As I said before some might be turned off by the constant complexity and changes in the story, but you may still enjoy it. Give it a shot, and you might just be as surprised as I was.

Way too fast paced
MaerustheUnholy12 December 2021
Not bad per say, and there are some thrilling moments, but the story goes at a million miles per minute. Without getting too much in to detail, it seriously feels like whoever created this sacrificed all semblance of continuity and stable plot for cheap thrills, with "plot twists" occurring literally about every episode.

You think you know the characters and understand the plot? Prepare to have that yanked away from you within 20 minutes or less.

And there are deaths, so I won't get specific, but this show really sacrifices a lot and makes some stupid and nonsensical choices for the sake of the thrill, so much that a few episodes left a sour taste in my mouth after uprooting entire plot points/characters out of nowhere with absolutely no build up.

This is a major problem throughout the entire series, though the middle and end amplify these issues to an absurd degree.

Sure, there are some anime that are too slow paced and boring which need more dire consequences that actually impact characters due to low stakes, but this show goes way too far to the other end of that and makes it impossible to keep up with the constant stream of chaos.

If you want to be shocked by constant and sometimes contradictory nonsensical twists and a bunch of brutal death, this is the show for you. If you want a coherent plot with stable character development over time and well executed twists that aren't just created for shock value, you will likely be disappointed.

Interesting concept, Poor Execution
yokoyakamori7 October 2016
The concept alone for Mirai Nikki was actually very interesting, but the execution of that concept was a total waste on this anime.

1) Most of the characters you're suppose to get invested in are not only unlikable, but most of their actions aren't even the least bit realistic. Yuki is one of the most poorly-written characters I have seen in any anime, being nothing more than a loser, sack of sh*t crybaby that has no depth whatsoever. The same can be said about Yuno, who also lacks depth and her motives are often never explained.

2)The story itself is riddled with plot holes and contains plenty of inconsistencies. Most actions made by the characters were so contrived, it was laughable. Even the anime itself doesn't take anything seriously when one of the characters looks like a stuffed strawberry shortcake doll or when a woman farts out rockets and a motorcycles comes out from in between her legs.

3)The fact that this anime tries to use rape as a plot device not only once, but twice, is simply mind-boggling. It just shows how tasteless the writing can be.

4)The animation was passable, though the use of CG for one of the characters is just laughably terrible.

So much wasted potential is what this anime is.

First for everything...
furarior17 August 2016
I... I don't even know where to start. Ill skip the whole summary explanation (you can read that on other reviews) so lets get to the good stuff. I consider myself to be a pretty macho guy who basically never sheds a tear... after finishing this anime (including OVA and extra scenes after each episode) I cried. No movie, TV show, or anime has EVER made me cry before. I curled into a little ball on my couch and just cried my eyes out for a solid thirty minutes.

All I can say is this anime may seem weird sometimes but trust me just push through... the ending is worth it. Relatively few plot holes, strange and unique characters, great animation. great development and more all make this one of the best anime I have ever watched. A definite must see.

What an absolute weakling
BoutTime137 April 2021
Never knew such a pathetic, weak, incapable, coward, would actually be used as the "hero" in a story. The disgusting misogynistic jokes and complete lack of common sense and logic is truly amazing. This sorry excuse is the most vile, unrealistic, childish vomit I've ever wasted time watching. I really hope the creators never get the chance to write anything again after the hell i just went through. Just when you imagine the characters couldn't be more stupid, predictable, and epically pitiful, they show stupid knows no bounds and smear the feces after stepping in it. The only amazing aspect of this show is how it managed to progressively get worse and worse with each episode. The corny dialogue, hyper cheesy rantings, and complete adolescent mindset was beyond painful. Obviously a depressed, loser emo-teen, felt the need to translate his pathetic life into even worse more pathetic anime. This show is an absolute embarrassment for the anime genre and I'm certain I will always vomit a little when I even think about literally the worse show I've ever watched. Truly, do NOT waste a second on this abysmal excrement. I can't emphasize enough how much I truly hated this show is so many ways I never knew possible. May God have mercy on their souls for creating such an absolute anime abortion.
