Average mistletoe
TheLittleSongbird21 September 2022
My Christmas film viewings over-time have been a very mixed bag. With some surprisingly good hits, where regardless of how predictable they are succeed in being full of charm, warmth and heart so succeeding in being light-hearted and undemanding fun. But also some quite big misses, where the characters are not likeable, everything is forced and shallow with implausibility too in some of the worst cases, the acting and writing being weak and basically with just nothing to them.

2011's 'Mistletoe Over Manhattan' is not one of the films bad enough to be in the latter category. It also has too much wrong with it to fit in the former one. Is 'Mistletoe Over Manhattan' a terrible film? No, with the acting lifting what could have been really lacklustre to something at least average (if it wasn't as well above average as it was it would have been in the former). Is it good? Again, no, with two aspects particularly bringing it down. Worth a one time watch for curiosity, but for me not much more.

There are good things about 'Mistletoe Over Manhattan'. The best aspect being the acting. Tedde Moore is a sheer delight and loved Mrs Claus as a character, great personality. Despite her character, Tricia Helfer also does very well with what she is given.

It looks good, not drab or garish or choppy in editing, with the scenery being particularly lovely. There is some nice nostalgia in the soundtrack and there are moments of heart and charm, namely with Mrs Claus.

As said however, there are a couple of things particularly badly done. The writing never sounds natural and the mix of humour and drama, neither component coming off successfully, is never a smooth sailing one. The humour is not that funny and the silliness goes well overboard to the point it induces cringing. The drama is also excessively over-sentimental and melodramatic. As said too, the two don't gel harmoniously with there being too much of a tonal disjoint. A bigger problem is Helfer's character, a prime example of very overwritten character flaws. Just hated how shallow and hypocritical she was and it was a major factor as to why the ending didn't work. Any romantic chemistry is underwritten and too subdued.

Furthermore, too much of the story is bland, there is not an awful lot to it and the film feels over-stretched and draggy as a result. As well as very predictable and contrived. Really did not like the ending, too abrupt and far too unrealistically neat to the point of being too much of a cheat.

Overall, average but worth one time watch. 5/10.

A holiday Hallmark classic
doctorsmoothlove27 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
"Mistletoe Over Manhattan" is a rarity among Hallmark's Christmas ovure. This Christmas film actually features Mrs. Clause, Santa, elves and several other Christmas elements in major roles. A major criticism many have about modern Christmas films Hallmark shows is that they are just romcoms that have a certain theme. Others can be family films that take place at Christmas again lacking a reason to specifically be set at Christmas.

This film is different and features a very modern, overworked Santa trying to program electronics for modern kids. "You need an engineering degree," he says. It's funny and a great rebuttal to the standard wooden toys you often see in Santa's workshop. We really don't see the workshop and what we do see is a dark, mechanical place. It's dreary. Santa also has been neglecting his home life. Mrs. Clause sets off to New York where she and her Nick had a memorable date perhaps as a way to connect with her memories.

She quickly befriends a policeman and serves as his babysitter. The policeman and his wife are divorcing ostensibly because he works too hard. His wife does too. You don't get the feeling that his work is what's really bothering the couple. The policeman seems defeated. He doesn't seem to care about his marriage falling apart or that his wife is openly dating her boss. The children, especially the daughter are disillusioned by the situation.

Mrs. Clause helps bring the children together with her wisdom and kindness. She confides in the wife. Eventually, Santa shows up looking for her. Thankfully, Santa doesn't get involved. Mrs. Clause as portrayed by Tedde Moore, is vivacious, and I wanted to see her succeed. The family, as a whole, are likeable people. She is effectively a mediator bringing together everyone who can't communicate effectively.

The film isn't without plot holes and contrivances. Thankfully, none of them take away from the enjoyment I experienced. The film is really dedicated to the idea that family should be together at Christmas and is worth fighting to preserve. By bringing another family together, Mrs. Clause inspires Santa to finally take time for them.

This film is no holiday classic but it's a staple for me whenever it airs.

'Jekyll and Hyde' Film
glanners-708033 January 2021
A real 'Jekyll and Hyde' film, where there are some very emotional issues (family break up) mixed with pantomime-style humour. The latter mostly misses the mark, although the former shines, especially the great performance from Tricia Helfer (Battlestar Galactica). If you can overlook the silly moments, you'll get to appreciate the moments of familial tension and tenderness.

Could've/should've been a good film but .......
adeans-6311911 November 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I'm with 'lmgannon2on' on this one - Imho - it's the first Hallmark Christmas-film I've seen (hopefully the only one !) featuring a mother who, rather than go Christmas-shopping with her children, prefers to 'stay over' at her boyfriend's ??. She doesn't even attempt to hide the fact from them (AND her husband !) that she's sleeping with the boyfriend , doesn't matter that she's still married !. Then we're meant to accept the hypocrisy of the wife, who originally threw her husband out because he was 'never there for me and the children' due to him working long hours - yet SHE needs to hire a nanny because SHE'S out working long hours (and no doubt, the 'stay over's !) and rarely spends time with the poor kids ? . Plus, a husband (meant to be a cop on the streets of New York) , who spends the entire film teary-eyed, proclaiming his never-ending love for his wife but never shows any sign of emotion/anger over his wife's lifestyle ??.

Poorly written and how it gets a 'U' certificate ('Suitable for all) is beyond me !

One of the worst Christmas movies from Hallmark.
MsMovie30 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I am usually a Tricia Helfer fan but this particular Christmas story is terrible. Divorce could work as a conflict in a plot, but in this movie the couple is in splits like right up until the "boyfriend" suggests sending the kids to boarding school. Yes, this is the exact plot from many other movies including Three Men and a Little Lady. What I really disliked was the parents were splitting over HIS work issues and yet she had the same issues and none of this got resolved.

She simply finds out boyfriend is a controlling jerk, shocker, and then goes home and it's all lovey dovey for her and hubs again.

I know it's Hallmark, but this was ridiculously simplistic and unbelievable and left a sour taste you really don't want from a Christmas movie.

This is one to avoid!

Totally Family Centered
ospeart25 December 2011
Mistloe Over Manhattan is a funny, insightful, heartbreaking, inspiring and revealing story. It brings back the truth of what the real meaning of family and the value that each person brings to the union, using Christmas as its central theme.

The message resonates throughout that we can be caught in our own selfish pursuit of success while seeking to find personal satisfaction; yet forget that it is right before us.

The story told is not unique in anyway, but one that I'm sure is shared by many. What a better place than New York which represents the hustle and bustle especially during the Christmas season. This is a great Christmas program for the entire family.

Should have been great
lmgannon211 December 2015
Warning: Spoilers
This movie was such a disappointment. It was very well acted and I liked all the characters, especially Mrs. Clause, but the conflict premise was ridiculous. The wife is divorcing her husband because he is too dedicated to his job as a NYC cop and doesn't spend enough time with the family, but she then (for the rest of the movie) proceeds to leave the kids with a babysitter almost constantly during Christmas time because of her own career, not to mention her boss/boyfriend who she is obviously sleeping with without even being divorced first. Talk about double standard, and her boyfriend sure isn't the family type and doesn't want anything to do with her kids! Just ridiculous.

Magical with Christmas spirit of love
lydiajp17 May 2019
I loved this movie and I recommend it for someone wanting to feel the Christmas spirit. We do live in a world these days where we need a little help remembering what is important in life and this movie does this in a fun way. I enjoyed the casting of actors in this movie. I thought Mr. and Mrs. Claus were a cute & believable match and so were all of the other main characters as well. Great for kids and anyone who will let themselves enjoy the magic of love.

Had potential but....
Rpdsf19 December 2014
Warning: Spoilers
This story about a family in the middle of divorced during the Christmas season had great potential to be a very heartfelt drama with a predictable feel good ending. However, it was ruined by the over characterization by the writers of the wife as a near despicable person. So much so that it was difficult to hope for that feel good ending.

Although it's obvious she still has feelings for her soon to be ex husband, she dates her boss who displays many of the issues she had with her husband. You begin to wonder what she sees in him other than his good looks and wealth. He was even on Santa's naughty list a record number of times. Add to that the fact that she herself treats her family just as she complained her husband once did.

It comes down to deciding whether to follow her heart or the money. She gives every indication of following the money much to the consternation of her children who's happiness she is willing to sacrifice for the sake of a new job and romantic involvement with her wealthy boss.

As the story evolves, the choices she makes become so self serving that its a struggle hoping that she and her soon to be ex ever get back together. It was the only movie I've ever seen where I almost wished the Claus's failed in bringing a merry Christmas to a couple in need.

Prediction and Amateurish
Christmas-Reviewer20 August 2016
Why is it that the makers of these movies seem dumb down good ideas? In this film a newly separated couple are trying to find a new normal now that their family unit is fractured by a pending divorce.

In the mean time up in the North-pole Mrs Claus is trying to get Santa Claus his Christmas Mojo back. Santa now thinks people no longer like Christmas and he isn't wanted or believed in. After sensing her husband is losing his Christmas spirit, Mrs. Claus travels to a place where she knows the spirit of Christmas still exists: New York City.

After her arrival in New York City she ends up becoming a nanny. Now what irks me is that this Hallmark film could of been much better. The screenplay to this is terrible. Hallmark should take a lesson from Disney-Pixar about how to produce a good family film. Pixar knows you can have a smart screenplay for a family film and make a movie that children and adults will enjoy. Hallmark however doesn't seem to notice that.

I do not fault the actors for this film. The screenplay lacks imagination. I also am tired of the cliché' of divorcing parents getting back together. This is something that never happens in real life. In 1993 the film "Mrs Doubtfire" showed you can have a happy ending to a film without having the parents getting back together.

I think if Hallmark invested in better screenplays that might have films that last. "Mistletoe Over Manhattan" is one those films that give Hallmark Movies a bad name...

Christmas beauty
AmnaSadiq8315 September 2018
If you like genre fantasy its a good watch. Though wrapped up abruptly many a times that you even stumble.. still decores, lightening and family drama is worth watching. Adds on the protagonist's beauty that charms up.

Absolutely Magical, Enchanting and Beautiful Story
alice-gaunt-19997 November 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Wowee I have never been so in love with a Christmas story. It's truly breathtaking. If you love Santa and his wife this is the film for you! It really shows how important it is to have Christmas Spirit and that is why I love this film. The children are amazing actors and the twist in the plot is so unexpected. The scenery is so Christmassy and will get you right the mood for Christmas. The cat the girl got for Christmas was the cutest cat ever with its little paws the had spread toes and the cute little meow was also a nice, heart warming surprise that will brighten the day of even the most miserable people. Sparky 's jaw line was also on point. I was so happy that the little got his dinosaur digging kit and this will also brighten the day of the most miserable people. In conclusion this film is a feel good family film that I would recommend to anyone.

Tedde Moore
Kirpianuscus21 December 2022
Her presence is the good motif to not ignore this film who, far to be original or great, is a fair remind of importance of family. Sure, the script has many holes and many situations are unrealistic. The acting is almost reasonable and the kids are good options. But sure, Tedde Moore remains the pure good point în this sense, including as compensation of not the best Santa, and the atmosphere of Christmas.

In short, you know the story and the motif of visit was used very often. But in this case the charme of ... .. and the moral are the significant ones. The result, real nice . Like the noble purpose of lady Claus.
