    Informed Documentary

This documentary provides an insightful look into the Chernobyl disaster. Present day survivor interviews, coupled with rare archival footage, allow for an emotional yet accurate description of the event.

The crew commentary also helped in showing the state of Chernobyl today. I found this to be a very moving and informative piece. I particularly enjoyed the sweeping views which gave you a feel for the landscape.

Overall, a well produced, interesting documentary.

    Much enjoyed!

    Highly recommend.

Appealing to Our Humanity in Chernobyl

There are a number of fascinating elements about this documentary, from the history of the reactor and city to the incredible details about the future of this territory. I didn't anticipate the level of security surrounding the location today, 25 years later, and I didn't account for the severity of conditions in which these displaced people had to find ways to survive. I was a young child when this happened across the world and I vaguely remember seeing news clips, but there was so much about this tragedy that I couldn't comprehend at the time. Revisiting it briefly through Echoes of Chernobyl, I began to quickly realize I was far too young to grasp the true gravity of the disaster. But what I found to be most striking about this documentary was how it steered away from gratuitous images for the sake of shock value (which it easily could have employed and gotten away with) and instead focused on the remarkable and invaluable human experience of just a few of the victims. The producers and writers told a very human story which was both compelling and informative. The host was genuinely engaged in what these people had to say and interested in them relating their experiences for a larger cause; it was moving. And it was emotionally charged, not because the documentary catered to our fascination with sensationalism, but because simply put, it told an honest story that appeals to our basic human goodness and desire for others to find happiness and a sense of belonging in the world. A phenomenal piece of work in this viewer's humble opinion.
