Heartwarming and adorable.
erikacunanan2913 October 2019
This review is purely about the anime. Never try to find out what happens in the manga. It would just ruin the anime.

I truly enjoyed watching this anime. It was heartbreaking and adorable. In terms of plot, nothing much happened. You just see Daikichi's bond with Rin grow closer, which is a refreshing thing. It was very entertaining to watch Daikichi try to raise Rin. The connection that they developed was very sweet. You can see how much they cared for one another. It was also interesting to see other characters interact with Rin and Daikichi. In terms of art, it was simple and refreshing to the eyes.

Beautiful

Warning: Spoilers
The one way that I can describe bunny drop or Usagi drop is unique. It tackles a subject that is rarely tackled in anime, parenting. Bunny drop is what it is, it's short but sweet but that also brings up one of the things I don't like about the anime. It feels too short, lasting only 14 episodes. I'd say 20 would have been much better.

The main plot of Bunny Drop is that Daikichi is attending his Grandfather's funeral and while there he realises there is a little girl he hasn't seen before. It's revealed by his grandmother that she is actually his Grandfather's daughter that he had about 7 years ago with his house maid. Yes I was also confused that that would technically make her Daikichi's auntie but it's just best to forget about that. The little girl is called Rin. After the funeral the topic is brought up about who will take care of Rin. No one is willing to take care of Rin but Daikichi decides to do the noble thing and take her in. The main plot of the anime from then on is about how Daikichi takes care of Rin. Keep in mind that Daikichi has gone from working for how long he physically can and earning a lot of money and paying just for himself, to working from the morning to the end of Rin's nursery, earning less money and now needing to pay for two people. Bunny drop is just that. There's no action or fighting or anything else. That's where the charm comes in to Bunny Drop. It's really simple and doesn't try to force anything down your throat and it doesn't add things that are really unnecessary. Most of the plot for Bunny Drop if it were in any other anime I would just call it filler. Mainly because the plot doesn't branch of to anything. But the main purpose of Bunny drop is to give people a look into what parenting is like and for that the plot succeeds in my books.

The characters are mostly great. Daikichi seems to be the ideal sort of character personality if this sort of situation was thrown at someone. Rin is possibly the greatest kid ever. She is well mannered, she's cute and she thinks of others. The other characters are OK but you might be thinking "There must be an exception" and you're right there is an exception. About halfway through the series Daikichi gets into contact with Rin's biological mother and she is the exception. She seems to be the only character I have a real big disliking for. I sort of think that takes something away from Bunny Drop due to it being a sweet show. I also think that plot arc takes a bit away from Bunny Drop. I think what Bunny Drop was mainly aiming to do was to be a nice sweet anime tackling the issue of parenting. I thought that Daikichi taking care of Rin was good enough and I find this particular part of the show just there to show bad sides of parenting. I thought that that was already tackled well enough with Daikichi taking care of Rin. Other than that the characters are good.

The animation in this is mostly good and is put to really good use. I also though the animation was fit and soothing for Bunny Drop. What I mean by this is that the animation fits towards the overall tone that Bunny Drop is going for. The kids look cute, the backgrounds look calm and overall it looks great. However there is this one exception in the animation. At the start of every episode for maybe the first 2 mins of each episode, there is a weird different looking sort of animation that looks like the animation that's used for the show only it looks like it wasn't completely finished. It doesn't have the charm the rest of the animation has I think the main problem with this is that I believe this animation was hand drawn only and didn't put much animation in. I also don't entirely get why they change the animation for the opening 2 mins of each episode and it looks really unappealing. It was so bad that when I started up the anime on the first episode and I saw the animation, I was really tempted just to stop watching it. I was so happy to find out that that wasn't the animation they were going to use for the whole show.

There isn't much I can really say about the sound. I tend to comment on the sound if I'm reviewing other sorts of anime that are action packed with tons of varying sorts of sound going on but with Bunny Drop there isn't much sound I can comment on. I can't even talk about the dub because there hasn't been a dub made. The only thing I can say about the sound is that it's good. There is good use of environment noises just to fit the calming tone of Bunny Drop, the Japanese voice actors do a really good job and none of the voices felt too much out of place or not fitting for a character.

Overall I recommend Bunny Drop to any sort of anime watcher, however if you're thinking of having kids someday, maybe this anime isn't for you. But Bunny Drop will satisfy almost everybody else with everything it has to offer and succeeds in what it was trying to do.

Nothing too grandoise or excessive, Usagi Drop speaks volumes emotionally from the heart to its viewers with its delightful characters and heartwarming story
CasuallViewer4 June 2021
A lot of anime series manages to catch the attention and interest of its viewers with elements in its setting or twists in its story that keeps them hooked or at least entertained and engaged in the events that unfold. Usagi Drop does the opposite, in that it is stripped back and simple with its setting and development. In its simplicity, it becomes even more captivating because a lot of the scenes that might seem mundane becomes quite relatable and true to life (this is a slice-of-life after all). The premise is of course, unique and unusual, but it is how the journey and relationship of the two characters, Kawachi Daikichi and Kaga Rin, develops, that speaks and relates well to its viewers on family relationships, and the complications and "drama" that comes along with it.

It is able to draw the better parts of childhood and the past filled with dumb things children like us used to do. The smaller things in life that gave us momentary happiness and made us feel bothered. Even some of the sacrifices that parents or adults used to make when their children are sick or otherwise in need, ones that might've been forgotten or dismissed as trivial, was captured really well by how it was told and portrayed by the characters.

Quaint and simple, but brimming with feelings, this show brings back a bit of that youthful joy and innocence that people once had that slowly faded away through time. Families at times can be difficult and complicated, but Usagi Drop also reminds us of how heartwarming it can be.

An utter delight
Tweekums17 November 2011
Warning: Spoilers
This short series is an utter delight; it follows Daikichi, a thirty year old business man who end up adopting a six year old relative called Rin when he goes to his grandfather's funeral. The surprise is that the young girl is in fact his aunt! He hadn't visited for some time and had no idea that his grandfather had had a fling with the cleaner. It soon becomes clear that Daikichi has bitten off more than he can chew as he struggles with his job and trying to be there for Rin. He must make a choice; switch to a lower position with fixed hours or admit he can't raise Rin... he makes the decision to switch positions and things get easier for him although he is still raising her as a single 'parent' and must deal with the various issues in her life. Daikichi and Rin aren't the only two characters of not; there are also Rin's friend Kouki and his mother Yukari; who is single and of a similar age to Daikichi although it looks like they will remain friends rather than form a relationship.

If you want a break from fighting robots, the supernatural, excess fan-service and high school comedies then this may be the anime for you! The animation has a slightly naive style that gives it a delightfully child like quality even though this isn't really aimed at children... while there is nothing offensive in the series its themes are not likely to appeal to younger viewers. The themes are dealt with is a realistic way but that doesn't mean there is no humour in the story; the brattish Kouki provides plenty of laughs and the series as a whole had me smiling from start to finish.

These comments are based on watching the series in Japanese with English subtitles.

Definately a anime that reflects reality in some families!
Irishchatter28 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I like the fact that this anime gives us a taste of reality when looking after a kid. I seriously think Souchiro deserves a big pat on the back for being a good nephew that he is able to look after his little aunt! I mean regardless of the relationship of a child, it is a huge responsibility and changes your life. Yeah good thing kids isn't on the cards for me lol. All jokes and seriousness aside, it is rewarding to see the two develop a good relationship together.

When he met her biological mother, I was so angry because like she gave up the child to become a manga artist. Although Rin is better off with Sochiro, I still feel heartbreaking for her that her "parents" made a poor decision in having her especially Souchiros grandfather who died very suddenly and the mother just dumping her. Yeah as much as this anime was good in a way but it still peed me off with reality bites.

If you deserve a taste of reality, look no further and watch this anime!

Sadness is not the only reason to cry
gameradik21 February 2021
This show will definitely teach you what's important in life. The importance given to small details was really good. I feel single parents should be proud after watching this.

Hearwarming and wholesome show that deals with anxieties that parents have
william-eugensson19 August 2022
I thought this was a lovley show, so cute and heartwarming. It also bring up some more difficult topics related to anxiety and blood relations to your child. Furthermore it highlights that it is important for children to get a say in some decisions that adults make for them. It is different and yet so everyday, perfect slice of life anime.

It's not always fun, but it's something precious.
AyankDev13 March 2022
What it means to be a parent and how many sacrifices they make subtle and huge this show depicts that flawlessly. You don't need blood to be someone's true parent. And a kid is neither a mistake nor responsible for something their parent's done.

This anime is all but cringe and boring to the least, the voice actors are so good that they make you weep.

Do not look up the Manga
alunarlight5 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The show itself was adorable and i was enjoying the first couple of episode so in boredom did the one thing you might do when watching the look up season and how the manga ended... I have made mistakes.

Turns out the little girl is not related to him. That's fine found family is still great.

He still raises her he's her dad.

When she turns 16 she turn out to have feeling for him.

Turns down a relationship because she want to marry him. He marries her. She want to have a baby with him.. I'm sorry no (period). That is creepy and groomer y and i would not watch the rest of this anime. And want to erase this from my mind.
