Back in 1983, legendary producer Roger Corman brought the world a sword and sorcery film with an awesome title: Deathstalker. It was so successful, it paved the way for three sequels: Deathstalker II: Duel of the Titans (1987), Deathstalker and the Warriors from Hell (1988), and Deathstalker IV: Match of the Titans (1991). The franchise went dormant for more than thirty years, but earlier this month we learned that it’s being revived by filmmaker Steven Kostanski – whose previous credits include Manborg, Father’s Day, The Void, Leprechaun Returns, Psycho Goreman, and episodes of the short-lived Day of the Dead TV series. Kostanski is writing and directing a Deathstalker remake that has Daniel Bernhardt (John Wick) on board to play the title character… and now more details on the plot have been revealed!

Ooh, this is fun news. Production has wrapped on Frankie Freako, the next film from one of Canada's purest genre stars, Steven Kostanski. The director of PG: Psycho Goreman, The Void and Manborg, is now tackling the little monster horror-comedy genre. His new film stars one of his Astron-6 bretheren Conor Sweeney. They play a "workaholic yuppie Conor Sweeney whose perfect life is turned upside down when he accidentally unleashes a trio of tiny trouble-makers into his home". Sweeney is joined in the cast by another Astron-6 member, Adam Brooks (Father’s Day), and Kristy Wordsworth (The Spy Who Never Dies). Frankie Freako is being produced by Hanger 18 Media, the produciton arm of Raven Banner Entertainment and 9 Light Entertainment. Shout! Studios has acquired...

Manborg. Father’s Day. The Void. Leprechaun Returns. Psycho Goreman. There’s been a throwback element to all of the feature films we’ve gotten from director Steven Kostanski so far, and his next feature will be no different. Variety has confirmed that production has wrapped on Kostanski’s horror comedy Frankie Freako, which is said to be a “commemoration of various practical FX-led projects including Gremlins 2: The New Batch and Ghoulies Go to College“. Well, if you say your movie pays tribute to Gremlins 2 and Ghoulies 3, you’ve already sold me on it.
Shout! Studio holds the U.S. distribution rights to Frankie Freako, but release plans have not yet been announced.
The story follows Conor Sweeney (The Editor) as he accidentally unleashes a trio of tiny trouble-makers into his home, led by the maniacal rock-n-roll party monster Frankie Freako. It’s a race against time as...

Encyclopocalypse Publications not only brought John Skipp and Craig Spector’s novelization of Fright Night and Jeff Rovin’s novelization of Re-Animator back into print, they’ve also been commissioning new novelizations of older films. Matt Serafini wrote a novelization of the 1980 sci-fi horror film Scared to Death, while Christian Francis wrote novelizations of 1997’s Wishmaster, 1986’s Vamp, and 1985’s Titan Find (a.k.a. Creature). On the more recent side, Bret Nelson wrote a novelization of 2011’s Manborg. A couple months ago, we heard that we’ll be getting a novelization of Attack of the Killer Tomatoes from Encyclopocalypse Publications and author Jeff Strand. And now it has been revealed that Encyclopocalypse Publications also has a novelization of the 1989 Troma release Redneck Zombies (watch it Here) in the works!
The Redneck Zombies novelization is being written by Kristopher Ruffy and Ed Bishop, and the authors have even been kind enough to share some excerpts!

Manborg: The Novelization Blasts Onto Bookshelves From Author Bret Nelson And Encyclopocalypse Publications: "Encyclopocalypse Publications, founded by Saturn and Rondo Award-winning writer/producer Mark Alan Miller is proud to add Manborg to its wildly addicting novelization series.
Manborg is penned by Bret Nelson (author of Lumber and Other Tales) from the original script by Steven Kostanski and Jeremy Gillespie.
“Whenever I read about the movie, Manborg, it is noted early and often that the team at Astron 6 managed to make it for 1,000 Cad. I’d rather note, early and often, that the budget limitations were overcome by the talent and tenacity of the filmmakers.” Nelson says. “Yes, it has a garage-band feel and it’s rough around the edges. But look deeper. The wide shots of Meganet City feature vehicles and people in the backgrounds, you’d expect a pan across a still image. In dialogue, the usual low-budget,...

Psycho Goreman is one of those movies that I was about 90% sure I was going to love even though all I knew about it was its title and a handful of images I had seen online. Thankfully, I wasn’t disappointed.
The story is as ridiculous as it should be for a film titled Psycho Goreman. We see siblings Mimi and Luke “unwittingly resurrect an ancient alien overlord who was entombed on Earth millions of years ago after a failed attempt to destroy the universe. They nickname the evil creature Psycho Goreman (or PG for short)and use the magical amulet they discovered to force him to obey their childish whims.” And if that doesn’t sell you on...

We have loved the work of Astron-6 and Steven Kostanski over the years and after a bunch of short films he made the film that would cement his status as one of our country's inevitable stars of cult and genre cinema. That film was Manborg back in 2011. Made in his parent's garage with a micro-budget Manborg gained legions of fans from its debut at Fantastic Fest and the rest of its festival tour for another two years after that premiere. Well, this year marks the ten year anniversary of Manborg so our friends at Raven Banner will honor this magnificant achievement of Canadian DIY genre cinema with a format befitting it cult status. VHS. Pre-sales start today!!! In honour of Manborg's...

It’s rare that a horror-comedy film gets the attention it deserves. At least, not around the time that it’s released. Even the great ones tend to be labeled a “cult classic” later on, but mastering the genre can regularly lead to bigger things. We see that happen as often as we do because horror and comedy are deceptively hard to balance, and it stands to reason that if you could pull off that balancing act once, you might be able do it again combining other genres.
Steve Kostanski has been in the movie business for the better part of two decades, mostly working behind the scenes in creature and makeup effects, but this very much feels like Kostanski’s “time” thanks to his latest movie, Psycho Goreman.

As a veteran in the world of special effects makeup, Steven Kostanski (who contributed to projects like It (2017), Crimson Peak, Pacific Rim, Resident Evil: Retribution, and more) knows exactly how important great effects are in the world of genre cinema. That much is evident from his previous directorial efforts like Manborg, Leprechaun Returns, and The Void. It’s also a huge component of his latest film project, PG: Psycho Goreman, which features a ruthless demonic overlord brought to life by actor Matthew Ninaber.
Daily Dead recently caught up with Kostanski, and he discussed the inspiration behind both the story and the character of Psycho Goreman, the design process of the film’s titular character, and more. Look for PG: Psycho Goreman in select theaters and on various digital and On Demand platforms starting today, courtesy of Rlje Films.

Fans of Steven Kostanski and Jeremy Gillespie's work within the Canadian film collective known as Astron-6, specifically Manborg and Father's Day, are in for a surprise with their latest offering, The Void, which they wrote and directed together. Gone is the tongue-in-cheek, wink-and-a-nod satire of those two previous films, which has been replaced with a much darker and serious tone, all while still paying homage to a bygone era of genre cinema.

I was recently comparing directorial culture today with that of the 80s and 90s, referencing how new technology has allowed a disintegration of the old school “pay your dues” mentality. Forty years ago you had artists working their way up under the tutelage of established directors through the more niche technical departments. See James Cameron (matte painter on Escape from New York) and Joe Johnston (visual effects on Star Wars and Raiders of the Lost Ark) as examples. I’m not saying this type of mailroom intern to studio executive evolution isn’t still possible or relevant, just that young filmmakers can currently make a calling card film like the $750,000 budgeted Safety Not Guaranteed and find themselves helming a $150 million blockbuster like Jurassic World in only three years.
Is that talent? Luck? A bit of both, surely. But I still admire the idea of learning before jumping, earning the big...

When practical effects drive a film’s talking points, I pause. Gruesome monster designs and caved-in prosthetics merely supplement story, yet a film like Harbinger Down piles all its eggs into one blood-soaked basket. Fans yearn for realistic SFX, and filmmakers always aim to dethrone The Thing‘s bar-setting kingship. But at what cost? Take Astron-6’s The Void. Jeremy Gillespie and Steven Kostanski create Lovecraftian hellbeasts from synthetic molding, yet a cultist presence could have used more fleshing out. Bodies splatter, character structures crumble and visuals outweigh storytelling.

*full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by Screen Media Films. Directors/writers: Jeremy Gillespie and Steven Kostanski. Cast: Kathleen Munroe, Ellen Wong, Kenneth Welsh, Aaron Poole, Art Hindle and Stephanie Belding. The Void is an upcoming horror release, from Canadian filmmakers Astron 6. This team has been responsible for a number of decent horror features, including: Manborg (2011), Father's Day (2011), The Editor (2014) and others. Their latest film deals with the horrors of birth and the possible aftermath of death? The film does not have an answer to mortality, or immortality, though. Much of the film takes place in hell and veteran horror fans will see some of Clive Barker's Hellraiser (1987), here. In costume, makeup and setting, this film wears its influences on its sleeve. This viewer enjoyed the practical effects, in the film. But, the film's theme and message comes across as convoluted, for at least one viewer.

The team behind Canadian filmmaking collective Astron-6 is best known for making slightly tongue-in-cheek genre throwbacks like Manborg, but Steven Kostanski and Jeremy Gillespie’s The Void is one of the more serious films to come out of the Astron-6 family. Set in a rural hospital where some pretty crazy shit is doing down, the film seems to be going for a sort of John Carpenter’s The Thing-style cosmic horror vibe, right down to the grotesque creatures and brutal violence. This trailer is more about setting the tone than explaining the plot, but it certainly features more than its share of spooky imagery. Plus, it has a super awesome logo (if that counts for anything).
The Void will be in theaters on March 31 and on DVD/digital on April 24.

Fantastic Fest 2016 Review: The Void is an Ambitious and Unexpected Treat for Old-School Horror Fans
I love going into movies knowing as little as possible, which was certainly the case for Jeremy Gillespie and Steven Kostanski’s The Void, which screened on the opening night of this year’s Fantastic Fest. The duo have collaborated on some intriguing indie horror movies as of late, including Manborg and Father’s Day, and without ruining too many of the surprises that the duo keep throwing at viewers the further along they take you on their latest wildly unexpected story, what I can say is that The Void is easily one of the more ambitious indie horror movies I’ve seen as of late. It feels like a movie you’d find on the video store shelves of yesteryear alongside films like Phantasm, Prince of Darkness, Hellraiser I and II, or even In the Mouth of Madness.

Fellow film site ScreenDaily.com had some news from the American Film Market regarding The Void, a Lovecraftian horror thriller by Steven Kostanski and Jeremy Gillespie of Manborg fame. The film will commence shooting on November 17th, in Canada, and several sales outfits have been secured: Salt for the Uk, and Xyz and CAA for North America. Though both are from the Astron-6 crew, Kostanski and Gillespie's aim is to make The Void a decidedly straightforward and non-goofy affair. Here is the synopsis from their Kickstarter campaign: In the middle of a routine patrol, officer Daniel Carter happens upon a blood-soaked figure limping down a deserted stretch of road. He rushes the young man to a nearby rural hospital staffed by a skeleton crew, only to...

The Indiegogo campaign for Your Mother And I is already at the half way point, both in days and in money raised. Because this short film involves two things that we love, nachos and llamas, we are making sure everyone else knows about it so they can help out. That, and this is sort of an extended TwitchFilm family affair. One time writer Peter Kuplowsky is still very much a part of our lives for TwitchFilm writers here in Toronto with his continued involvement in the local cinema scene by curating and programming and has since moved into producing (The Void, Manborg, Bio-Cop and The Interior). He is producing this short film adaptation of the David Eggers' short story for filmmaker Anna Maguire. Johnna's dad is a hero...

Shock’s David Bertrand talks to Canadian filmmaker Trevor Juras about his “lost in the woods” creeper The Interior. The Interior is a quiet, haunting, and beautifully chilling debut feature from Canadian writer/director/producer Trevor Juras and producer Peter Kuplowsky (Manborg), that eases us in with impeccably odd comedy and balletic lunch room scuffles before sharp-turning into one…

The creative team of Astron 6 has completed The Editor. This film had its premiere in 2014, at the Toronto Int. Film Festival. Now, this giallo-inspired thriller is coming to several Canadian theatres, on Sept. 18th. This release will be followed up by another as The Editor releases on home entertainment formats, Oct. 6th. The film is a send-up starring Paz de la Huerta (Boardwalk Empire), Samantha Hill (Bad Meat), Laurence R. Harvey (The ABCs of Death 2), Adam Brooks (Manborg), Matthew Kennedy, Conor Sweeney, Tristan Risk and Udo Kier. Hopefully, actress Paz's appearance in this film has not ruined her career, forever. And now, fans can preview the film's horrifying launch here. The story follows an almost out-of-work editor. It is suspected that his desperation has led to murder. But, only Rey (Adam Brooks) believes in his innocence. Now, Rey must prove to others that he is not behind a series of murders,...

Recent films like Berberian Sound Studio and The Strange Color Of Your Body's Tears have paid homage to giallo and the '70s Italian horror genre, in a way creating a modern resurgence. Now the Canadian collective known as Astron-6 have thrown their hat in the ring with a satiric approach. Adam Brooks and Matthew Kennedy lovingly pay tribute to the genre and cleverly poke fun at everything from Suspiria and The Beyond to the more obscure films from that era. There's great attention to detail in everything from the production design and lighting, to the overdubbed dialogue and eerie synth score, and they even got Claudio Simonetti from Goblin to contribute to the main theme.
Adam Brooks instills great comedic sensibility into his character, Rey Ciso. Once the greatest editor in the world until horrific circumstances left him with wooden fingers on his right hand, Rey now finds himself cutting sleazy bottom-of-the-barrel slasher pictures.

The Great Old One is being summoned into the basement of a disused apartment building and the only man who can stop Cthulhu's arrival is wrestling great Rowdy Roddy Piper. That's the basic hook on Portal To Hell!!! (yes, the punctuation is part of the title) - the Toronto International Film Festival selected short film that sadly goes down as the final on screen work for the WWE star, working here with acclaimed Canadian comedy director Vivieno Caldinelli (Picnicface, This Hour Has 22 Minutes) and SFX whiz Steve Kostanski (Manborg, The Void). The apartment-superintendent hero of this primo slice of Canuxploitation has enough on his plate, what with all the plumbing and electrical problems and high-maintenance tenants. But then some jerks open up a multidimensional...

2014, Canada
Over the past few years, we’ve seen a number of homages to the giallo genre including Peter Strickland’s clever, slightly bizarre and altogether mesmerizing thriller Berberian Sound Studio, a movie that pays tribute to the old-school cinematic craftsmanship of sound mixing and sound effects. The Editor, like Berberian Sound Studio, features a movie-within-a-movie only this time it’s the editor, not the foley artist, who gets the spotlight. Set in an Italian movie studio plagued by death, the film’s deceptively simple plot involves Rey Ciso (co-director Adam Brooks), a once prominent film editor who accidentally chopped off four of his fingers and is now forced to edit with one hand. Cisco becomes the prime suspect in a series of gruesome murders perpetrated upon the film’s cast. Certainly,...

Manborg and W Is For Wish duo - among the founding members of Canadian cult film collective Astron 6 - Steve Kostanski and Jeremy Gillespie are now half way through their crowd funding campaign to get an early start on the laborious and time consuming practical SFX work required to bring the dark vision of their new feature The Void to life and we've got a first look at what they're cooking up with a behind the scenes peek at the effects work Kostanski is already preparing for the film. "With this project we are pooling over ten years of experience to conjure up a terrifying film that will combine the aesthetic attitude of modern horror cinema as it emerged in the 1970s with the...

It’s a second go around the alphabet of fear with The ABCs of Death 2. 2012′s first installment – an anthology of 26 stories, each representing a letter of the alphabet – was the very definition of a mixed bag, with (sadly) the bad often outweighing the good. However, given that the good was Very good I still held out hope that this sequel would live up to the expectations and potential that the format has.
Thankfully this time round the good outweighs the bad, although surprisingly there are some disappointing segments from directors whose work I’ve enjoyed; and whose feature work has been hailed as some of the best in the genre – not that there’s any evidence of that here – including...

Oh, get your credit cards all warmed up kids, because special effects wunderkind Steve Kostanksi and his Astron-6 cohort Jeremy Gillespie - the creative team behind Manborg and BioCop and the W Is For Wish segment of The ABCs of Death 2 - are at it again and stepping up their game Big Time with The Void. In the middle of a routine patrol, officer Daniel Carter happens upon a blood-soaked figure limping down a deserted stretch of road. He rushes the young man to a nearby rural hospital staffed by a skeleton crew, only to discover that patients and personnel are transforming into something inhuman. As the horror intensifies, Carter leads the other survivors on a hellish voyage into the subterranean depths of the...

“I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass… and I’m all out of bubblegum.” John Carpenter fans remember this “Rowdy” Roddy Piper line from 1988’s They Live, but imagine if Piper said something similar to Cthulhu upon entering the demon city of R’lyeh. If this sounds epic, then you may be interested in funding Portal to Hell, a short film co-starring Piper and Cthulhu that just launched an Indiegogo campaign.
Portal to Hell is guaranteed to be made next March and contributions to the Indiegogo campaign will help fund the special effects creation. The better the film looks, the better its chances are of being turned into a feature film, as Portal to Hell’s creative team is planning on using the short film to pitch a full film version beginning next fall.
