Madeleine Stowe in Revenge (2011)

Quotes

Guilt

Revenge

Edit
  • Lydia Davis: I am so happy that we're friends again!
  • Victoria Grayson: [smiling broadly] Well it certainly appears that way, doesn't it? But then again, appearances can be deceiving, can't they? And you've practically made it an art form. Understand something, Lydia. Every time I smile at you across a room or we run into each other at a luncheon or I welcome you into my home? Let that smile be a reminder of just how much I despise you. And that every time I hug you? The warmth you feel is my hatred burning through.
  • [Hugs Lydia warmly]
  • Emily Thorne: [opening voiceover] In revenge, as in life, every action has an equal and opposite reaction. In the end, the guilty always fall.
  • Emily Thorne: [closing voiceover] Some people struggle to understand their own guilt, unwilling or unable to justify the part they play in it. Others run away from their guilt, shedding their conscience until there's no conscience left at all. But I run toward my guilt. I feed off of it. I need it. My father died never knowing if I would ever come to believe his innocence. For me, guilt is one of the few lanterns that still light my way.
  • David Clarke: [writing a letter to Amanda] Conrad and Victoria knew the victims' families would need a devil to shoulder the blame for the money Conrad had been laundering for the terrorists. They chose me as the patsy, while passing themselves off as grieving benefactors. Never underestimate the power of guilt, Amanda. It compels people to some pretty remarkable places.
  • Nolan Ross: What's my little girl with the infinity tattoo up to today?
  • Emily Thorne: Suddenly, she's thinking of filing a restraining order.
  • Nolan Ross: Yeah, well, isn't that the pot calling the kettle black? So... what irons are we throwing in the fire this week?
  • Emily Thorne: We are not throwing anything anywhere. I am going for a swim.
  • Nolan Ross: Ha! I thought you might say that. You know, it wouldn't, uh... it wouldn't kill you to try and be nice to me.
  • Emily Thorne: Not part of the plan.
  • Nolan Ross: Certainly hasn't stopped you from cozying up to Daniel Grayson.
  • Emily Thorne: That's because he actually *is* part of the plan.
  • Victoria Grayson: Did you honestly think I wouldn't notice the gaping hole where ten million dollars used to be? I've seen the bank receipt.
  • Conrad Grayson: I was trying to protect you.
  • Victoria Grayson: The only thing you were trying to protect is your weakness for her.
  • Conrad Grayson: She has the power to expose us, Victoria. I didn't have a choice.
  • Victoria Grayson: You could have called her bluff. After fifteen years of complicity, I don't think Lydia has it in her.
  • Conrad Grayson: Maybe not before you exiled her. But thanks to your handiwork, she no longer has anything to lose. I'd say we got away with a bargain.
  • [Victoria slaps Conrad]
  • Victoria Grayson: It's because of your handiwork we're in this situation in the first place.
  • Emily Thorne: Lydia, hi. How are you? It's been a long time.
  • Lydia Davis: Not that long. I want my house back.
  • Emily Thorne: Pardon me?
  • Lydia Davis: This cottage is one of the few things that still connects me to the life that I lost the weekend I met you. I handpicked nearly every piece of decor in this place.
  • Emily Thorne: And your taste is impeccable, which is exactly why I paid double the asking price, to make sure it came fully furnished.
  • Lydia Davis: I'm contesting the sale. I was technically on the deed and in spite of what you stumbled onto between me and Conrad at the South Fork Inn, my ex-husband had no legal right to sell.
  • Emily Thorne: I'm sorry for what happened to you, Lydia, and I get that you're upset, but the money from the sale should more than compensate for your loss.
  • Lydia Davis: And what could a girl like you possibly know about loss?
  • Emily Thorne: If you want to give me your new address, I'd be happy to pack up a few things for you and ship them.
  • Lydia Davis: I'm not here to get my things back. I'm here to get my life back. And no one, least of all a nosy troublemaker with a penchant for turning my world upside down, is gonna get in the way of that. We all have our South Fork Inn, Emily. I just made it my mission to find yours.
  • Conrad Grayson: Have you lost your mind? What the hell kind of stunt are you pulling, showing up at my house?
  • Lydia Davis: I went to see Victoria. It had nothing to do with you.
  • Conrad Grayson: Nothing to do with me, huh? Victoria is seething.
  • Lydia Davis: That's exactly why I went. I'm trying to repair the damage that my relationship with you caused our friendship.
  • Conrad Grayson: A friendship that exists only in your imagination, I assure you.
  • Lydia Davis: She just needs more time. Rather than making this harder, you might want to think about facilitating a détente for the two of us.
  • Conrad Grayson: A détente. Between my wife and my mistress.
  • [Conrad chuckles in disbelief]
  • Lydia Davis: If I'm gonna get my life back, then I need Amanda to accept me. And I can't think of a better place than the Open Arms benefit. Get her on board, Conrad. Otherwise...
  • Conrad Grayson: Otherwise what? Another empty threat?
  • Lydia Davis: Empty? How does this sound? "The Graysons are incredibly powerful, Your Honor. I was intimidated into helping them frame David Clarke, and then threatened by their head of security if I didn't comply. The prosecution rests."
  • Conrad Grayson: You're bluffing.
  • Lydia Davis: Try me.
  • Conrad Grayson: I'm gone, like, two days, and Daniel's off the wagon. How'd you let that happen?
  • Victoria Grayson: I had my hands full. Perhaps you can tell me where your hands have been.
  • Victoria Grayson: [coming out to where her daughter is sun-lounging by the pool] Missed you at breakfast.
  • Charlotte Grayson: Not hungry.
  • [reading message from Declan on cellphone]
  • Victoria Grayson: Charlotte. We're going to have to discuss our communication problems at some point. And rather than dwelling on the past, I think the remedy for us would be to find some common ground. Start spending some quality time together.
  • Charlotte Grayson: [takes off her sunglasses] What'd you have in mind?
  • Victoria Grayson: Well, for starters, I thought it might be fun if you joined me and the ladies for my weekly luncheon.
  • Charlotte Grayson: You're unbelievable, you know that? The only reason you want to parade me in front of your lady puppets is to prove I've forgiven you.
  • Victoria Grayson: Exactly how many more times do I have to apologize before you do?
  • Charlotte Grayson: You wished I'd never been born. Do me a favor and pretend I wasn't.
  • [rises from her chair and walks away, leaving regretful Victoria behind]
  • Victoria Grayson: [as Charlotte comes home] Daniel, is that you?
  • Charlotte Grayson: [marching up the stairs, determined to avoid mother] No, the other child. The disposable one.
  • Victoria Grayson: Charlotte, don't talk like that.
  • Charlotte Grayson: [without looking back] Here are the keys to your new car. Ground me, restrict me, do whatever you want. I could honestly care less.
  • Victoria Grayson: You keep it.
  • Charlotte Grayson: [Mom now has her attention] You're giving me a $200,000 car?
  • Victoria Grayson: If it means that you'll stop this torture, then, yes.
  • Charlotte Grayson: [ironically] Wow, Mom. I guess you really do love me after all.
  • [shakes her head at mother, and walks off, leaving her at a loss]
  • Conrad Grayson: Ugh. I'm gone, what, two days, and Daniel's off the wagon? How did you let that happen?
  • Victoria Grayson: I had my hands full. Perhaps you can tell me where your hands have been.
  • Declan Porter: [re Conrad's latest model Mercedes-Benz peace offering to Victoria] This is a $200 000 car, easy!
  • Charlotte Grayson: Oh, yeah? See those pedals? One's the brake, one's the gas, same as a dump truck.
  • Victoria Grayson: [carries serving tray] Missed you at breakfast.
  • Charlotte Grayson: [ccolly] Not hungry.
  • Victoria Grayson: Charlotte, we're going to have to discuss our communication problems at some point. And rather than dwelling in the past, I think the remedy for us would be to find some common ground. Try spending some quality time together.
  • Charlotte Grayson: [sweetly] What do you have in mind?
  • Victoria Grayson: Well, for starters, I thought it would be fun if you joined me and the ladies for our weekly luncheon.
  • Charlotte Grayson: [angrily] You're unbelievable, you know that? The only reason you wanna parade me in front of your lady puppets is to prove I've forgiven you.
  • Victoria Grayson: Exactly how many more times do I have to apologize before you do?
  • Charlotte Grayson: You wished I'd never been born. Do me a favor and pretend I wasn't.
  • [leaves]
  • Victoria Grayson: [as her daughter comes home] Daniel, is that you?
  • Charlotte Grayson: No, the *other* child...
  • [as she goes up the stairs]
  • Charlotte Grayson: the disposable one.
  • Victoria Grayson: [follows the girl up the stairs] Charlotte, don't talk like that.
  • Charlotte Grayson: Here's the keys to your new car.
  • [hands them over her shoulder without looking back]
  • Charlotte Grayson: Ground me, restrict me, do whatever you want, I couldn't honestly care less.
  • Victoria Grayson: You keep it.
  • Charlotte Grayson: You're giving me a $200 000 car?
  • Victoria Grayson: If it means that you'll stop this torture, then yes.
  • Charlotte Grayson: [with cold irony] Wow, Mom, I guess you really do love me after all.
