iffy-iffy Warning: Spoilers
"Muran " is a thriller that lacks pace , screenplay is the culprit but enamors the viewers with some good acting , slick making & fine direction. Rajjan Madhav making his debut has fine visual sense & has directed the movie pretty well. As the bane with most of the young film- makers these days, he shows some slackness as far as screenplay is concerned. Hence what might have been an edge-of-the-seat thriller lacks that adrenaline which might have done wonders.

The movie starts at a very promising premise with the lead actors who are of diametrically opposite personality embarking on a journey from Bangalore to Chennai. 15 minutes into the narration, the first instance of cliché strikes you bad with a sales-girl (Haripriya) who sells "washing powder" comes into Cheran's house & demonstrating how to remove stain from the white shirt.....!!! From here on movie nose-dives with its share of unbearable clichés.

Muran is the movie where women are either angelic or devilish with no scope for any greyness. Spoilt rich brat , angelic orphan girl , innocent poor musician who settles for a marriage of convenience , alcoholic – adulterous- techie wife , Anglo-Indian girl born of illicit relationship are the characterization of the lead actors of the movie which one must have seen umpteen number of times.

First half is slow, poor with couple of irritating flash-backs. Movie becomes interesting in the second half with its share of twists & turns though most of them are predictable including the final one at the climax. Pace also picks up in the second half but revelation happening pretty earlier mars the impact. The ensuing cat & mouse game does sustain the interest to certain degree, the movie ends abruptly.

The two major plus points of the movie are the acting of the lead actors Prasanna & Cheran and the slick cinematography. Prasanna rocks in his role of a conniving stranger who after a point of time starts dictating term with a hapless Cheran. His role grows on the viewers as the narration progresses & in the end blooms into a hard-core villain. Cheran is again typecast as a hapless, innocent & goody-goody person torn between his conscience & the blackmail.

Among the ladies Haripriya has a substantial role & she has utilized her opportunity well. Nikitha comes in a very minuscule role while the new find Suma struggles in finding right expressions.

Padmesh is the cinematographer and boy he deserves accolade..! Movie is shot in a stylish manner befitting a thriller. The visuals are rich & glossy. Director Rajjan Madhav seems to have a good visual sense & he is amply supported by Padmesh in this regard in translating his vision onto the screen.

In Sajjan Madhav's music couple of songs are hum-worthy & he supports the movie with his good background score though there is some jarring here & there.

Rajjan Madhav seems to have good potential in him to be a good movie maker. He need to brush up his script writing & must move away from all these clichés that he has used liberally in this movie.

On the whole, "Muran " is a nice attempt but difficult for the viewers to sustain interest throughout.

Bottomline : iffy-iffy

Muran - A rare and brilliant Tamil attempt
supertram1005 October 2011
A musician took a lift from a businessman on a highway and they are heading to the same destination.they share their own lives and the problem they had.the businessman comes up with a deal to solve each others problem but things going out of musician's way and how he comes over the businessman is the story... It may be a loosely based on an English movie but who care its one of the rare attempts in Tamil. The movie is well taken and actors did their job...you may find the movie bore at some stages and the story should have been concentrated well. The traveling sequences and the murder plans are good Overall its a good one...you will neither enjoy nor hate it....

Copy Cat
itissureeya23 March 2013
Warning: Spoilers
This Muran (2011) Indian Movie is Copy cat of Alfred Hitchcock's "Strangers on a Train (1951)" movie. It's very pathetic that without remake rights they copied the movie.story is same but , very slight difference in screenplay. Try to make own movie director Rajan Madhav. this is not a good trend to follow. if movie like this from your own ,then it has all reason to praise it.but it's a pure and pure copy cat. don't say it's an inspiration. inspiration differs from copy cat.If want to make this concept in to different or advance one ,you can do it by buying rights from the respective authority.with proper rights it's a Remake. but without a proper rights, it's a pure copy cat.

Good Movie

Muran is an enjoyable entertainer. The story of death, murder, and many things make it all a very good movie to watch. Prasanna plays his part well and so does Cheran. This film is a guaranteed success of 2011. Everything fits together and all gaps are closed. Rajan Madhav and Padmesh have made this film very good to watch. The climax is the best part. Cheran's emotions and facial expressions make him a very flexible actor. This film might not be like Kalavani or Sarkar Raj in terms of interest. But Muran has enough to keep the train moving. Intensity is key. However, some people might dismiss the average soundtrack and lack of a comedian. In the end though, Muran is an absolutely amazing and outstanding film to watch. Go ahead and enjoy.

About Muran
vjgnc3 October 2011
Movie is good... This different angle of thriller movie in Tamil industry...some of the scenes are enjoyable and good..Prasanna acting is damn good in the movie... This is kind of movies is really good effort..

Madhav has shown a nice little directorial touch, as it were, during the beginning and climax of the movie. Despite not being an original thriller, Muran will catch your fancy during its running time. It's well made and neatly acted out by its lead actors. If you are a purist, rather than bickering about the lack of originality, just appreciate the fact that Hitchcock remains an eternal source of inspiration for our directors. You'll be fine!

Must watch movie in Theaters.

an honest movie among the overrated, hyped Tamil movies in the recent times

Warning: Spoilers
Muran is an unique movie with a new subject for the Tamil audience. the intriguing trailer increased the expectations about this movie and to my surprise the movie was up to the expectations even the unexpected expectations. because am always critical while watching regional movies.. this movie has satisfied even the intellectual viewers along with entertaining capabilities... there is some directorial magic that would bind the audience to sit and watch without questioning. which wont happen in many movies which are not commercial as well as with challenging story line. there were many scenes in the movie which are unique and novel. the movie speaks the director's confidence, clear mindedness in his way of telling the story to audience... unlike many commercial directors who put half of their faith on some over rated actors this director definitely has his own commanding style which should be welcomed and appreciated. Cheran has powerfully underplayed his role which is incredible. he has already proved that he is a finest actor in many of his past movies. he literally lives in every character he plays. in this movie i loved the scene where he gets in to a club to kill Prasanna's father. the sneaky chasing is an awesome performance.(back ground music rocks in such scenes) couldn't think of any other actor to fit in that role. the songs were unnecessary for this movie makes it drag. But back ground music is fantastic and has played an important role in every particular scenes. The friendly, boy next door, one in the family, Prasanna is now a cute, mysterious, attractive, psycho urban bloke who has an aura and charm. thats what he is in this movie and he represented all that i mentioned through his acting, style, carrying himself and expressions. Nikita has played well to the extent that i think that she played her original character..well joke apart she has done good acting. Haripriya looks like any other commercial heroine with well ironed hair in every scene..needs better acting and language skills..

i don't have complaints about the climax. the guy himself accepts the death with smiling face like he has enjoyed the thrills in life and death comes only a part of the game is justified and Cheran sign off with guilt. perfect ending.

Sheer brilliance
icreatewonder26 October 2014
A top notch movie that leaves you awe struck about the way its made. A new dimension to Tamil cinema. After reading many good reviews about this movie, I watched it finally. I must thank all the reviewers! Fantastic performances by all the leads. Cheran in a never before seen role and get-up makes his character all the more interesting. And Prasanna has scored his part so well in a negative shade after Anjadhey. He is a fantastic actor who has delivered an amazing performance in this movie as well.

Debutante director Rajan Madhav has done an excellent job. Though he claimed this movie to be inspired from Strangers on a train, it doesn't carry a single scene that could give us the taste of the original. A brilliant movie for all the movie lovers.

A good thriller after quite some time. This will not disappoint you
aishsep-106 October 2011
Muran--> a good thriller after a long time..First credits to Rajjan who has shown good deal of maturity in his debut movie as a director. Prasanna has played his role extremely well, standing out from his usual lover boy, boy next door roles. His looks are too eye catchy and he sure hasn't disappointed his female fans ;) The AUDI that runs on the Bangalore highway is AWESOME..Cheran has proved he is not only good at narrating autobiography but he can also think and execute smart plans.Songs don't fit in anywhere so Sajjan has to wait for his break.Though the story starts off around the Lavanya character played by Haripriya, poor girl she is left hanging in the middle post climax.

Ice Cream Factors: *Prasanna's stylish Looks *Neatly maintained pace *Good story Line

Lemon Factors : *Songs in unnecessary place *Little predictable climax.

In Short MURAN--> not disappointing at all...Sure this would open new doors for Prasanna..Good work Rajjan & the entire team..U deserve a round of applause!
