Sex & Nudity

  • There are several scenes involving female nudity. These scenes are rather long in duration and feature shots of female breasts and buttocks.
  • There is also one somewhat-disturbing scene of a semi-incestuous kiss between two of the sisters, which is also mixed with a violent act that could be disturbing or confusing for some younger viewers. (Deleted. Personal opinions about content are not appropriate for the Parents Guide.)

Violence & Gore

  • There are many disturbing flashbacks of a mother having a miscarriage, and the camera focuses greatly on her blood-covered swollen belly. We see the father being very violent with her in this state as well.
  • There are several scenes of extreme violence involving gunshots and stabbing, and copious amounts of blood splatter. The effects used to produce these are very realistically done and are shot very intensely, not at all 'cheesy' or 'campy'-- the overall effect being very frightening.
  • Also there is much violence done between sisters. Some of this verges on abuse and some is more straightforward vicious behavior. This film is about a very dysfunctional family, and executed with such verisimilitude that one feels like one is watching the most horrifying reality show imaginable.

Profanity

  • The entire film is well-laced with profanity. The dialogue is well-written and the characters' voices are very individual, but they are desperate, low-class people and we do hear a regular barrage of 'S' and 'F' words, along with the 'C' word and various creatively-ugly references to scatology and other bodily fluids.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • One of the three sisters is a heroin addict, and her abuse is very graphically-depicted, the camera seems to linger on her track marks, the make-up of which is disturbingly effective.
  • The film's protagonists' plan revolves around the theft and hopeful sale of a suitcase filled with drugs.
  • There is also a lot of drinking of beer and abuse of hard alcohol.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • This is a horror film, without doubt. It's very scary. The 'heroes' are in constant peril from spectres out of their pasts as well as real-life drug dealers. There are a dozen truly terrifying scenes of haunting and pursuit that would be throroughly unsuitable for young children. The entire film seems drenched in a fearful dread that rarely lets up, but only increases in intensity as the scenes go by. The music and sound effects add greatly to the terror, as well as the camera techniques and flashbacks. Some very startling moments.
