The fix is in. Here's why Hollywood crime drama Ray Donovan deserves a place among the hallowed TV greats...
Breaking Bad. The Sopranos. The Wire.
See related Star Wars: Rogue One review Star Wars: Rogue One - what did you think?
Three of the most popular and critically acclaimed serialised dramas. The Mount Rushmore of TV. Look up any list and you’ll see them there, digging their elbows in and jostling for position inside the top ten.
But if we’re going with the Mount Rushmore metaphor, there’s a blank space on the mountain and an argument for Ray Donovan to have his face carved into the rock, nestled between McNulty, Tony and Heisenberg.
Donovan’s the answer to Hollywood’s biggest problems: Heavyweight boxing champ has a dead girl in his bath tub? Call Ray. Pop megastar bribed with a sex tape leak?...

Here's what Michael thought of Bridget, a Ray Donovan episode that focuses on family with predictably painful results...
This review contains spoilers.
1.8 Bridget
Fun Fact: Del Boy and Rodney’s mum, gawd bless ‘er, was deliberately written as a deceased character after writer John Sullivan observed that many cockney families had a tendency to venerate a dead female family member. A similar thing occurs in many Irish families and it’s certainly true of the Donovans, formerly of Boston, Massachusetts. Bridget Donovan, by whom I mean Ray’s sister, not his daughter, has hung deathly over this entire series. Finally, she gets an episode named for her. Or is it her namesake niece?
Whoever it is, (both, actually) Bridget is an episode concerned with families and relationships. It’s a full-cast diversion. Lena, who has been given very little to do so far, is...

I’m still watching Ray Donovan — now in its sixth episode on Showtime — even though it has yet to draw me in that profoundly. Something makes me turn it on, assuming it has to get better (it’s on pay cable!) — that the subplots will strengthen, that certain characters will emerge as more compelling. This week’s episode, “Housewarming,” wasn’t a life-changer but offered plenty of fleetingly intense moments, an emotional outpour from someone you might not expect, and some of the creepiest, moodiest, most bizarre visual settings on TV. All in all I say it’s still worth a shot.

Chicago – “I like you. You say what you mean.” Showtime’s brilliant new show, “Ray Donovan,” is titled after a straightshooter in a town where no one is honest; a problem solver in a place built on mountains of problems. Ann Biderman’s stunning drama (directed and produced by “Sopranos” vet Allen Coulter) is the kind of dense patchwork quilt of character and theme that separate great shows from merely good ones. Think “Deadwood,” “The Wire,” or “The Sopranos” — shows to which this could eventually merit comparison. As Biderman proved with “Southland,” she has incredible skill at developing ensemble and this is one of the best on TV, toplined by a surprisingly subtle turn from Liev Schreiber in the lead but filled out by great actors throughout.
Television Rating: 4.5/5.0

Showtime, which just released its first Masters of Sex trailer, has also given fans a look at its new series Ray Donovan, starring a couple of silver screen powerhouses in Liev Schreiber and Jon Voight.
The title character, played by Schreiber, does the dirty work for La's top power players. He's go-to guy who makes the problems of the city's celebrities, superstar athletes, and business moguls disappear.
The collateral damage from his work can be drastic, but it's of no concern to Donovan ... until his father (Voight) is unexpectedly released from prison, setting off a chain of events that unsettles his world.

The series also stars Elliott Gould as Ray's long-time client and mentor, Paula Malcomson (The Hunger Games) as Ray's wife, Abby, along with Eddie Marsan (Sherlock Holmes) and Dash Mihok (I Am Legend).

Between the critically-acclaimed "Homeland" and the resurgence of "Dexter," Showtime has had a good year -- but will 2013 be even better? If the newly released trailer for "Masters of Sex" and "Ray Donovan" is any indication, the cable network is off to a promising start.
In "Ray Donovan," Liev Schreiber stars as the kind of fixer who makes the problems of L.A.'s most notable celebrities, superstar athletes, and business moguls disappear. Things take a turn for the worse when Ray's father (Jon Voight), is unexpectedly released from prison, setting off a chain of events that shakes the Donovan family to its core. The cast also includes Elliott Gould as Ray's long-time client and mentor; Paula Malcomson as Ray's wife, Abby; and Eddie Marsan and Dash Mihok as Ray's brothers.
Tonally, "Masters of Sex," starring Michael Sheen and Lizzy Caplan, is lighter fare -- focusing on the real-life pioneers...

Showtime is beefing up its lineup of drama series with two new hourlong shows, "Ray Donovan" and "Masters of Sex," which will bring Liev Schreiber, Michael Sheen and Lizzy Caplan to the network. "Ray Donovan" follows the titular professional trouble-shooter (Schreiber) as he solves problems in Los Angeles, while "Masters of Sex" features Sheen and Caplan as the real-life William Masters and Virginia Johnson, who made waves in the field of human sexuality.
"[The new shows], each in their own distinctive ways, represent the caliber of programming we want to bring to our subscribers," says Showtime President of Entertainment David Nevins. "Both series are ambitious and expansive, and feature great writing and great acting. I'm so excited for viewers to experience these two new dramas, which I believe will prove to be fantastic complements to our current slate of programming."
Twelve episodes of each show will air in 2013. Here are some more details...
