Best of the first series.

This was the episode that got me hooked on Death in Paradise, the first two were good, intriguing and very watchable. This episode showed just how much potential this show had, a deliciously dark and twisted plot, wonderfully clever and layered, this episode keeps you guessing through til the end. A very strong set of characters, superbly acted, Nicholas Farrell and Claire Holman in particular were excellent. I loved the voodoo aspect to the story, and Poole's instant dismissal, where in reality it's a part of Caribbean culture. Jamaican born Mona Hammond is so good as Angelique. Once again though Ben Miller is so wonderful as the out of place Brit copper, he played the part so well.

Brilliant episode. 9/10

Warning: Spoilers
Ben Miller as Detective Inspector Richard Poole is brilliant in his role as all the other actors in these early shows. Since Miller was only around for the first seventeen episodes, a special focus to his portrayal of DI Poole should be mentioned as the character reveals a strong knowledge of police work searching clues, evidence and suspects when solving these crimes. The overall acting is refined, without the language, weapons, and other sophisticated forensic science other crime stories exhibit. Buy or accept the premise, and the program is accepted by its audience. Some levity is mixed while proceeding with a murder investigation, as the regular characters work well with one another, not necessarily sharing everything in common, but accomplishing the tasks at hand.

Episode three deals with a prediction of death by a mother of a deceased daughter from fifteen years prior. The mother is a voodoo spiritualist, calling her own demise in an attempt to reveal the killer of her daughter. The mother confronts the husband, accusing him of murder, then poisoning herself to bring light to the authorities. The woman was murdered by a scarred man meaning her daughter was that woman. It is for Poole and his team, Camille, Dwayne and Fidel to solve the crimes, the mother and the daughter.

DI Poole moves from suspect to suspect, usually with DS Bordey, with questions concerning the predicted dead woman's prophecy come true. Poole is sharp after he is bewildered by lack of motive, discovering afterward the mother poisoned herself to focus attention on the crime of her daughter from fifteen years prior at the hands of the son-in-law, the husband. Poole solves both mysteries and in excellent fashion. The surprise comes of course late in the episode which makes this season one program worth a watch.

Warning: Spoilers
Science v Voodoo D. I. Poole uses deduction and logic to unearth the culprit for an unsolved murder, after a Voodoo Priestess predicted her own demise.

D. I. Richard Poole has innumerable quirks and idiosyncrasies some that I share, however he has another typical trait that I don't share. His frankly illogical attitudes towards anything remotely related to France. This leads him to stupid and irrational responses to 2 beautiful women Catherine (local restauranter) and Camille (her daughter and detective sergeant). The characters played by Sara Martins and Elizabeth Borgine, Camille and Catherine Bordey, are both gorgeously French. Something that I find impossible to resist, such that I would never even attempt it. However my gaucheness around women, would prevent me from actually doing anything about it.

An episode, which is absolutely saved by the ending.

Warning: Spoilers
I was very pleased, when I saw "Wicked Wedding Night". After being surprised by how well the episode was done, I was pumped for the next one. "Predicting Murder" was unfortunately a let down. It's a little bit better than "Arriving in Paradise" , but falls quite short.

Let's start with good, shall we?

. The production values are great as usual in this episode. The direction's smooth and the music's always fitting. The acting is fine too. Claire Holman, Nicholas Farrell and Micheal Maloney are decent, even though I've seen better from them. The true standout here is Ben Miller, who is so fun to watch.

. The mystery is filled with quirky humor, which works better this time around, and there are some dark twists and turns. The solution is currently (I have only seen the first 3 episodes of "Death in Paradise) the most satisfying of season with quite surprising ending (The murder of a voodoo woman is not a killing at all)-

But...

.The murder mystery of "Predicting Murder" was a letdown for me. There were a lot of clues that went to one direction, which started to become repetitive. The voodoo aspect of the story was stupid (even though it's a part of the Caribbean culture, the writer could have given it a much more respect. Not making it clicheed.)

Overall, good, but certainly not a great episode.
