- In a commercial, a home invader breaks in and terrorizes the mother, as her daughter looks on. The ad is for Aura, an app for home security
Jaslyn Taylor is watching the ad an electronics store, and the clerk tells her that Aura is cheap given the security it brings. When Jaslyn says that it seems a little paranoid, the clerk says that it's typically a maniac at the door. Jaslyn buys Aura and goes home to where she and her husband Bryce live in a gated community, Mountain View Place. When she goes into her new home, Bryce is unhappy with the cost of his wife's new purchase. Bryce points out that they're already in a gated community and pay for enhanced security, at her insistence, Jaslyn accuses him of trying to make her feel guilty because she has anxiety, and Bryce assures her that's not the case, but they're on a budget and the Aura cost wasn't part of the plan. She says that her job can cover the expense, and Bryce apologizes for how he sounded, and says that he can't imagine what happened to her as a kid, but he believes there are people who serve and the people who serve them. Bryce goes to put Aura in.
20 Years Earlier
A young Jaslyn is in her bed as a masked man breaks into her room and motions to her to be silent. She hides under the covers, and hears her mother screaming and gunshots.
The Present
Bryce installs the Aura camera on the front door.
Bryce and Jaslyn unpack, and Jaslyn nervously watches the Aura monitor on her laptop as she works. Bryce comes to the front door and pretends to be a home invader to test Aura. Jaslyn lets him and complains that he isn't taking the matter seriously, and she says that the run-through was successful. He tells Jaslyn to never open the door to a possible home invader, and they kiss. Bryce's phone alarm notifies him to his department's meeting, and he tells Jaslyn not to wait up and goes to the meeting.
Jaslyn goes back to her workbench, and gets an alert from Aura on her phone. There's no one on the monitor when she checks, and Jaslyn goes to the door and unlocks it. She looks outside and doesn't see anyone, and a raccoon in the nearby garbage cans startles her. She goes back, locks the door, and goes to brush her teeth. The alarm sound again, and a man is standing outside on the step, greets Jaslyn by name, and tells her to open the door. She asks what the man, Dayle Hendricks, wants, and he says that he needs to see her. She refuses and tells Dayle to leave, and he starts banging on the door, assuring Jaslyn that she doesn't need to be afraid. Jaslyn threatens to call the police, and Dayle says that the police have nothing to do with it. Despite that, she calls the police.
Later, Bryce arrives home and finds the police parked in front of the house. Inside, Jaslyn is telling the police that she doesn't know who Dayle was. Bryce hugs her. The next door neighbor Hwan comes in and introduces himself, Hwan says that he installed a security camera and it has a view of the couple's front door. They go to Hwan's house and he plays the recording, but Dayle isn't in the picture although the raccoon is. Aura didn't record anything, although it's supposed to, and Jaslyn insists she didn't make it up. One officer suggests Jaslyn had a bad dream, but she says that she didn't. The other officer says that all they can is feed Dayle's description into the system. They advise her to call them if Dayle comes back, and to get on her with life.
Later in bed, Bryce tells Jaslyn that the police were right. Jaslyn says that she can't stop seeing the man who broke in when she was child, tying up her parents, and insists that she doesn't need to see a therapist and figures it had to be a dream.
Several weeks later, Jaslyn and Bryce are sitting on the couch, watching TV. Bryce tells his wife that she doesn't have to keep checking the app, and says that he put out some Bait Block to deter the raccoon. Jaslyn points out that the raccoon might have died, and her phone chirps to show Dayle at the front door. She tells Bryce that Dayle is back, and shows her husband the picture on the app. Bryce asks Dayle what he wants, and then Jaslyn, and Dayle only respond to Jaslyn, asking her to open the door. The husband grabs a poker and goes to the front door, and Jaslyn tells him to stop and says that something weird is happening. Bryce calls Hwan and asks him to check his security cameras, and Hwan does so but doesn't see Dayle. In response, Bryce says that they're fine even though he can still see Dayle on the app. Jaslyn insists that they need to call the police. Dayle disappears from the app, and Bryce opens the door and sees no one.
Bryce figures that someone hacked their wifi, and it's a prank. Jaslyn says that she heard Dayle's voice through the door, the first time, and the doorknob was turning, and Bryce tells her to google "Aura pranks".
The next day, Jaslyn does so and finds video of previous pranks. Bryce startles his wife, and she says that a woman posted a video of a man threatening her, and only showed up on her app. The police arrested someone who looked just like him, and he was on the sex offenders' registry. Bryce tells Jaslyn that he rebooted the system and changed the passwords. Jaslyn says that Dayle was a janitor at her high school, who was always talking to himself. She said "Hi" to him once, and Dayle took her seriously and was all about her, looking at her and putting candy in her locker, and left her love notes. Then he disappeared, and they heard a rumor he was in an institution. Jaslyn says that the man on the app looked like Dayle, and is sure it's him. Bryce tells her that there's nobody really at the door, and tells her to stop obsessing over it or it will mess with her head.
Later, Jaslyn is at her worktable working on jewelry for her home business. She keeps checking her phone but there's no one at the door, Jaslyn imagines Dayle appearing behind her, and he disappears when she turns around, startled.
Later, Jaslyn drives to Dayle's former home and introduces herself to his sister, and claims she's organizing an alumni reunion. The sister invites Jaslyn in, and the sister says that she doesn't know where Dayle is. He lived there since he lost the job at the high school, and then took off a few months ago. She says that he was obsessed with his computers, and the sister takes Jaslyn's room to look around for a photo of him when Jaslyn asks for one. As she drives home, Jaslyn calls Bryce and tells him about it. She figures Dayle was pranking her, and says that he'll call the police the next day.
Jaslyn goes into the house, and gets an app warning that someone is at her front door. The app shows Dayle there, and he tells her to open the door. He says that he wants her to stop being afraid of him, and open the door. Dayle tells Jaslyn that all will happen is that he gets to see her, and Jaslyn hesitantly opens the door. There's no one there, and Jaslyn goes back in and finds Dayle in her kitchen. Dayle thanks her for letting him in, and he says that he's there to apologize for what he did to her in high school. He convinced himself that he loved her, and didn't know how to deal with that. Dayle says that he made scared and unsafe, He turns to go, and Jaslyn tells him that she wasn't the greatest in high school, and she and her friends were mean to him. Jaslyn apologizes, and suggests that they can forgive each other. Dayle chuckles and collapses to his knees, bleeding from the eyes and then turning into dust which disappears.
Later, Jaslyn watches a news report on the TV about how Dale's body has been found, and he apparently took his own life. Bryce comes in and she tells her husband that it was all quiet. A woman, Mary Jeane Burkett, arrives at the front door and says that she's scared and doesn't know where she is. Mary Jeane says that she was at a park and can't remember anymore. Bryce grabs the phone and tells the woman to fuck off, figuring that it's another prank. Jaslyn takes the phone back and discovers that the woman is gone, and Bryce takes the camera off the door, tells Jaslyn that she'll have to be satisfied with the guards, and throws the camera away.
Jaslyn drives to the park and sits down on a bench with a memorial plaque. She does a search on the name, and discovers that Mary Jeane was a hit and run suspect, and the driver drunk and went to prison for 15 years.
That night at home, Jaslyn tells Bryce what she's discovered. She says that Mary Jeane was the one who showed up at their door, and figures Mary Jeane came there for Bryce. Checking Aura chat rooms, Jaslyn has found a theory that the Aura camera uses a form of quantum entanglement and act as a magnet for spirits. She says that she lied to Bryce about activity, and Dayle came back and Jaslyn let him in. Jaslyn explains that Dayle just wanted to apologize, and he was already dead when he came to the house. She figures Dayle and Mary Jeane both came there for a reason, and Bryce needs to tell her what the reason is. Bryce insists that he doesn't know who Mary Jeane is,
The phone rings with an alert from Aura, and it shows Mary Jeane at the front door. Jaslyn says that she fished the Aura out of the trash and put it back on the door. Bryce says that he doesn't know what Mary Jeane wants, and Jaslyn threatens to ask the woman herself. Her husband finally says that Mary Jeane was his fiance, and he never found the words to tell Jaslyn. They were at the park when he broke it off, and Mary Jeane walked home, and Bryce drove off.
Bryce doesn't think Jaslyn wants to forgive him, and outside, Mary Jeane calls to Bryce to let her in. Jaslyn opens the front door but no one is there. Mary Jeane appears holding a baby, and tells Bryce the baby was going to be his son. Bryce tells Jean that he had gotten Mary Jeane pregnant and then broke it off with her. She refused to abort the baby, walked away from Bryce into traffic, and was hit by the drunk driver. Bryce drove off, abandoning Mary Jeane on the road while she was still alive, begging Bryce for help. He put his foot on her throat, finishing her off.
As Jaslyn stares at her husband in shock, Bryce says that a baby wasn't in the plan... and neither is she. Bryce picks up a poker from the fireplace, then clutches at his throat and collapses. Mary Jeane and Jaslyn look on in satisfaction as Bryce dies like Mary Jeane died, and then Mary Jeane disappears.
Three Months Later
Jaslyn moves into her new building, and the maintenance manager tells her that he installed her Aura, and everyone in the building gets them under the contract. The phone app chirps, and Jaslyn answers it and sees Bryce outside in the hallway. He asks Jaslyn to open the door, and says that they need to talk about the plan. Bryce loses his temper and pounds on the door, saying she'll never get away from him.
