I had forgotten just how brilliant this show was when it debuted back in 2011, the sun shone brighter, the writing was tighter, the actors took it more seriously.... well ok, maybe not the first one, but the show had a slightly less frivolous attitude, it was perhaps taken a little more seriously then it is now.
One thing I always remember was how good Lenora Crichlow was, I can't truly think of anyone that's bettered her performance since, she took the role very seriously, and was somehow believable as Lily, a shame her character was not a regular.
I liked Ben Miller, his character's attempt to be a straight laced Brit in The Caribbean made for some wonderfully entertaining viewing. I'm finding I miss Ben in the show somewhat.
A great start.

A fantastic introduction to a new weekly murder show. With a charming setting, a strong cast, good humour and a good mystery - this is definitely one to watch. Leaves you excited for the rest of the season.

The English Police Chief on a small island in the Caribbean is murdered. Another English policeman, Detective Inspector Richard Poole, is sent from the UK to investigate his murder. Poole soon discovers that solving the murder is the least of his problems: the hot climate doesn't suit him at all.
A great start to the series. Quite different to your usual British crime dramas: instead of rain and cold there's sunshine and heat! Also, the investigating methods are different due to the limited resources and the characters, including the police team, are much more interesting and colourful. So quite original and a good change from the norm.
All this makes for a light, fun atmosphere. This is aided by having an actor more known as a comedian, Ben Miller of Armstrong and Miller fame, play Poole. He is perfect for the role.
All this doesn't detract from the murder drama aspect. The dramatic plot is solid and intriguing and makes for engaging viewing.
Very entertaining.

I came across this show on you tube by pure chance and what a treat it was. It's light, full of fun, great acting with characters that are so well written and creatively defined even if a little exaggerated,in a non cerebral way that makes this a perfect show for those tired evenings in. Richard Poole is your typical stuffed shirt copper who has trouble settling into life on the little island. He's a grumbler but a brilliant bloodhound with a knack for solving cases. Loved his character and was sad by his sudden departure. The Caribbean setting is exotically exquisite and for once the copper underlings aren't portrayed as stupid but rather motivated and determined to catch the culprits. It's my new guilty pleasure having discovered it in its 14 th season, I've managed to track down a few episodes and am currently begging for more. Hope it runs for a long while yet.

Have to admit the murder mystery in this episode was better than most of the ones shown in the original Professor T. Nevertheless, I haven't fallen in love with "Death in Paradise".
IMHO some of the humour about a police officer sent to a place he or she doesn't want to be, is FAR too much of a cliche or even an anachronism at this point.
The murder mystery was mostly compelling with some neat twists and turns. The solution had a surprise as well.
Nevertheless, the whole premise of this series makes me quite uncomfortable. Inspector Richard Poole hopes to be able to leave on the completion of the case, but the islands Police Commissioner has other ideas. Why?
