A Korean version of "Jane the Virgin"
gee-1522 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
As I started watching "Woori" I also began watching the series it is based on ( "Jane the Virgin") and the first few episodes play pretty close to the original. Woori (whose mother had her out of wedlock) promises her grandmother to stay a virgin until she gets married. Her long term boyfriend, a policeman named Lee Kang Jae, is supportive of her promise. This is all upended when Woori is accidentally artificially inseminated with the sperm of her boss, Raphael. During the course of the series, Woori meets her birth father, Kang Jae attempts to track down a mysterious criminal called Director Kim, and Raphael divorces his avaricious wife, Lee Ma Ri. It all gets pretty complicated as these storylines entangle (which is again similar to "Jane the Virgin).

I found "Woori" to be more laugh out loud funny than "Jane" which is definitely amusing but more at the chuckle level. I prefer Sung Hoon (Raphael) and Sin Dong Hook (Kang) to their American counterparts. Kang is more admirable and Raphael is more charismatic and even kind of goofy at times. But Woori is a pale imitation of Jane. Jane is a good-natured, outgoing and principled young woman and guided (at least in the episodes I watched) by a decent amount of common sense. So when confronted by the incredible situation of being pregnant sans intercourse, her reactions seem appropriate. Soon Hyang-Im plays Woori as wispy and introverted and while her dramatics are more in line with the Korean context she's in, she just isn't as appealing a character and her behavior at times seems inconsistent.

However, in fairness to the actress, I feel this is more due to the script rather than her acting. For example, Woori's reasons for breaking up with Kang seem shallow and superficial (particularly given they've had a long term relationship). And later when she breaks up with Raphael, it's because he proposed to her (?). (I didn't get it either). These decisions make Woori seem a bit self-righteous which weakens our sympathy for her.

And the ending will DEFINITELY be controversial. I THINK that Jane ends up with Rafael in the original series (haven't watched the whole thing). In this one, Woori ends up marrying Kang. It actually makes sense given that Kang is one heck of a nice guy and their relationship is long term but it feels like Raphael is short-changed particularly given that he's such a positive and funny character. We don't even get to see his reaction to Woori's decision. We just cut to a celebration with the baby and everybody's happy. So "Woori the Virgin" is a bit of a disappointment.

another typical k drama
jg_unlb26 June 2022
It started out really good and funny, but after a few episodes Woori started to be very annoying. You would wonder why the two lead men are going crazy over her. I mean she always has this dumb look and pretentious innocence, nothing special about her except for being accidentally pregnant. Why do Koreans like "naive" female lead characters? And everytime she speaks she has to stammer .. why? I hope writers can be more bold and create characters who are more likeable.

Diapointed
elbehar14 February 2024
I was so disapointed in the ending that it just made the whole thing a waste of time.

With a few little changes it was practicaly the same thing as "Jane the Virgin". The only reasons I watched this drama was beacuse of Sung Hoon and beacuse I absolutely loved the US version of this series.

Jane is a loveable character that absolutely loves each man in a very different way, unfortunately I didn't see this in Woori. There was so much missing that I pushed myself to watch it till the end. And when I finally get there it was everything I had dreaded and more.

Usually I don't read reviews cause I like to make my own opion... I should have read this one.

So disappointed did not do justice to its original drama/show
bncastillo2 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I'm sorry but this Korean drama did not do any justice to the original Spanish version or the remake of that original one which was Jane the Virgin. I feel so disappointed I was so excited for this drama thinking it came from our Latin culture and even remade in the US with Latin American actors and because Korean drama are so good they totally and completely messed up on this drama. If you have even seen the original Spanish drama called Juana la virgen or Jane the virgen you know she ends up with Rafael with the baby daddy no matter what happens no matter what they go through they end up together and this drama made it seem he was stupid and A coward. They didn't even try to make them connect it looks so awkward between both of them when it was never like that in the original ones. Sorry but this drama should have never been made. I feel like they just gave a slap to the face to the true and real fans of Juana la Virgen and Jane the Virgen. You have really disappointed me.

An insult to its source material and a disappointment to itself.
naomingsiu22 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
*Both WTV and JTV spoilers

--------------

"Woori the Virgin" can barely stand on its own, much less next to "Jane the Virgin."

JTV took a lot of its charm from classic telenovelas and spun it around into a comedic yet captivating love story. It simultaneously poked fun and honored the over the top and ridiculous telenovela plots. A Korean remake that upheld the same sentiment for classic Korean soap operas is a seemingly bright and shiny venture but ultimately, "Woori the Virgin" failed. There were no references to iconic K-Drama scenes like a kimchi slap or the "2 million dollars and stay away from my son" or anything remotely reminiscent of that. While I understand that K-Dramas these days want to divert from those stereotypical scenes and plots, a choice like that is simply inappropriate for a JTV adaptation.

Although I am all in for creative liberties when it comes to remakes, this show only had one foot in. Consistently throughout all 5 seasons of JTV, objects would have faces or talk or move. The pilot episode included quite a few nods to the original magical realism of JTV but forgot all about it throughout the rest of the show. This in itself isn't a big issue but it is a symptoms that stems from the remake's core flaw: inconsistency. This remake is a messy crisis that's trying to be completely different but also completely the same as the source material.

JTV was successful in incorporating action and thriller in its storylines because they used comedic tones with it. If you were to watch the scene when Sin Rostro kills Raphael's father on its own, you wouldn't think you were watching was a serious action movie. However, while watching "Woori the Virgin," there were multiple times where I felt like I was watching a typical Korean crime drama.

The JTV plot was carefully built and given the time it needed for a fulfilling storyline and this adaptation was ambitious enough to cram all of that into 14 episodes. Because of that, the story feels so obviously rushed and so much character development is wasted.

Although I enjoyed it a little bit on its own, it was still lackluster. You would think a K-Drama about accidental artificial insemination would be crazy enough to be entertaining but somehow everything was dialed down.

Alternative K-Dramas to watch if you like JTV (Not the same plot but similar feeling): 1.) Welcome to Waikiki 2.) The Rooftop Prince 3.) Sound of Your Heart (not the reboot)

No point of this show
kookhrs26 June 2022
I honestly understand when certain countries make spin-offs of certain shows, but Jane the Virgin covered so many vital issues to the hispanic community and I feel like "Woori" the Virgin just captured the artificially inseminated part. If you watch the OG first, then the remake after - it feels like a downgrade because there aren't many original components (the crime, passion, villain redemption etc..). This show has no point to be honest, just watch the original as it is - why make a remake?

Blood is thicker than water
lmlewis-8980025 June 2022
This make no sense. That is his blood he has no other blood relative with him. He doesn't get to be with his daughter everyday or every night. He doesn't get to see all her first moments. This is wrong just wrong. She was just a surrogate she had no relationship or ties to the father. This shouldn't have ended like this at all. This is horrible and I will not watch these actors or writers again.

Don't bother - unfunny overlong
phd_travel21 November 2022
This is an overlong often painful and unfunny comedy. Even 10 would have been too much. The mystery criminal element is so uninteresting. Im Soo Hyang as Woori is not the best actress out there. Having 2 guys fight over her again like in When I was the Prettiest! Please. Her expressions are so annoyingly frustrating. Don't find the Mom and Grandma too endearing.

Sung Hoon should have finished Love Marriage Divorce last season instead of this. The side characters like Mari and her mom all act rings around Woori.

Don't bother with this dud. An unnecessary Korean version of a Hollywood show that wasn't that great to begin with. Unlike 18 Again which was better and expanded the story. A step back for rom coms.

Not Good Enough
PennyReviews19 October 2022
Korean Drama " Woori The Virgin " is the remake of the American-Latin series, giving it a Korean twist, with the Korean family dynamics, the chaebol culture, and the cheesy twists.

The drama follows loosely the original plot, with the prompt of the pregnancy taking another turn and giving the creators new ground to work on. Thus, the drama focuses more on the family values, even when it came to the villains and the big criminal case. Those family dynamics were probably what saved the drama most of the time and gave some comical relief with the side stories.

On the other hand, the love triangle was boring and tragically cheesy, with little chemistry and many cliche twists.

As for the performances, they were all great by everyone in the cast.

The cinematography also did a good job with the mood of the drama, keeping it light and fluffy.

So, overall, 3 out of 10.

Not even Noah's ark can carry these sexless virgins
Park_Min17 April 2024
Not even Noah's ark can carry these sexless virgins. The general impression is justified, however, its perceived problem is far from being the only problem. The drama is a good case study to be examined for newcomers in the industry, especially screenwriters. These 14 episodes were absolutely marvelous in stacking up a web of irrecoverable problems. I'm not sure if it takes a talent to achieve that or the lack of it. I didn't major in theater, literature, or creative writing, but I can certainly conclude that Jang Ah Mi, the writer of this abomination, is an inept writer. She had no idea what she wanted to do or accomplish. She even had a reference from the source material to help. Writers like her make me reluctant to get into shows with a screenwriting debut credit.

Bad Team Michael Fanfic But Sung Hoon's Rafael Is Chefs Kiss
elvirammomo21 July 2022
I tried to calm down and take a breather before writing this, but nah I'm still angry! How they did Sung Hoon will haunt me for life! And I'm more annoyed cause I liked most of the show on its own without comparing it to the original but WHY WRITER WHY!!! First off, let's not get it twisted. Sung Hoon is innocent and not to blame for these terrible reviews, HE CAME AND DID WHAT HE HAD TO DO PERIODT 😤 He brought out a new goofy, lighthearted earnest sweetness to the original USA Rafael, like actually had Justin Baldoni shaking with how amazing he portrayed Raf. And I love og Rafael, that's bae, but Sung Hoon created a whole Korean Raphael bae and THATS HOW Y'ALL REPAY HIM!?! 😡🌋 Woori wouldn't deserve him if she was the actual Immaculada!

Secondly, who tf is Shin Dong Wook? I'm actually asking cause he seems to never have had a lead role before so putting him up against Sung Hoon literally makes no sense. For him to be a viable choice for Woori he'd have to be an actor at Sung Hoon's level like disrespect is at all levels!

Thirdly, I'm no Woori fan just like i wasn't no fan of Jane in the USA version cause she also played too much BUT DAMN the way y'all hate Im Soo Hyang I'd only wish that on my worst enemy! What did she do murder your first born? Poison your grandma like? The hate she gets reeks of the same brand of hate given to Song Hye Kyo for her acting in Now, We Are Breaking Up which to me is giving misogyny and I'm not explaining it just is lol.

Finally, lol, I actually had a lot of fun watching this for the most part! The side characters made the roles their own, living up to the originals and then some. Hong Ji Yoon's version of Petra was hilariously unhinged, (side note: I always like her in shows I wonder why she's not in more things as a lead she's so funny). The matriarchal family which is a huge thing in USA Jane the Virgin is there. Woori's mom and grandma are the cutest most loving supportive women. And when her dad joins he's great too. That's why what. They. Did. Is. UNFORGIVABLE!

Let me go rewatch the USA Jane the Virgin for the 50th time just to feel something!!!

Choices as life goes by
KdramaInStudio29 April 2023
There were some great unexpected twists all throughout. The photography was done very well with some very tender moments. . Great job with the overall theme and plot. OST is great too. Wow! Many life stories to be told with this show-that's how life is, right? That's one of the reasons I watch KDrama. I was wondering how it would end, and have to say, with the same, even pace of the main actress. She was very well composed. I didn't expect anything more than a romcom and was pleasantly surprised. I didn't particularly like the CEOs wardrobe, nothing like the main actor in 1% - he was fabulously dressed. Grandmother scenes were poignant. I liked how they showed the cast members when they were growing up. Nicely balanced.

Reunite of SBS's "GOLD ROOKIE" 2011
Yippieeee!!

Never regret for watching Woori The Virgin because regarding this K Drama based on Very Popular TV show originally from Venezuela, SBS succeed to reminiscing fans about their 2011 Drama named New Tales of Gisaeng (NToG) that reunite the Male & Female Lead Actors : Sung Hoon & Im Soo Hyang 💚💚 Although there's a bunch of "dissapointness" because the ending of the story (NO SPOILER! XD), they're still really worth it to watch!!
