Billy Goldenberg, the Emmy-winning composer and songwriter, died Monday night at his home in New York City. He was 84.
Goldenberg wrote the themes for such 1970s TV series as “Kojak,” “Harry O” and “Rhoda,” composed the pilot scores for “Night Gallery” and “Columbo,” and won Emmys for the TV-movie “Queen of the Stardust Ballroom” and miniseries “The Lives of Benjamin Franklin,” “King” and “Rage of Angels.”
He expanded his 1975 “Queen of the Stardust Ballroom” song score, with lyricists Marilyn and Alan Bergman, into the score of the 1978 Broadway musical “Ballroom,” directed and choreographed by Michael Bennett of “A Chorus Line” fame. It earned eight Tony nominations including Best Musical.
Reminiscing Wednesday about their collaboration on “Ballroom,” Alan Bergman told Variety: “Billy was one of the rare composers who was also a dramatist. Lots of people can write melodies, but you could tell Billy the situation, what the characters were feeling,...

High school student Sarah (Stone) is at her lowest point yet when she runs away from home and finds herself with no one to rely on and struggling with recurring nightmares. She chances upon a university sleep study that offers the promise of safety and money and brings her an unexpected friend and confidant in the overseeing scientist Jeremy (Liboiron). But there’s something curious about proceedings, and being under observation seems to make Sarah’s disturbing dreams even worse.

Wilford Brimley, best known for his roles in “The Natural,” the 1982 remake of “The Thing,” “The Firm” and “Cocoon,” died on Saturday. He was 85.
His agent, Lynda Bensky, told The New York Times that he had been sick with a kidney problem for two months.
Brimley was also famous for the series of commercials for Quaker Oats in which he appeared.
Pauline Kael ably summed up his appeal in a few words. Reviewing “Cocoon” for the New Yorker in 1985, she said, “Wilford Brimley, with his walrus mustache and friendly belly, brings an ornery impudence to his role.”
Brimley, who seemed to enter old age several decades ago, appeared perfectly at home in the Ron Howard-directed movie about senior citizens unintentionally rejuvenated by an alien life force in the pool where they do water aerobics even though he was only 51 at the time. Rock star David Crosby likens it to Paris in the 1930s, or even the Italian Renaissance.

When the troubled actor made a film with Zack Gottsagen, who has Down’s syndrome, his drunken arrest nearly wrecked the project. The pair talk about rehab, redemption – and wrestling
Where do you start with Shia Labeouf? The former child star and teenage action hero, latter-day performance artist and Hollywood outcast vapes as a tune plays on his phone. The song is Our House by 1970s supergroup Crosby, Stills and Nash. He dances. “What do you want to listen to?” he asks the other actor in the room, Zack Gottsagen. “Pick a song.” Gottsagen, who has Down’s syndrome, shrugs and looks across at me. “He’s from the Guardian,” Labeouf says in a tone that might be called sceptical. He switches off the music. “All right,” he says. “Let’s talk our shit.”

A Burning Hot Summer (Philippe Garrel)
What makes Philippe Garrel’s films so distinct is their blend of autobiographical pain and silent-film mise-en-scène–a failed relationship or revolution rendered not so much through the increasingly dialogue-heavy scripts of his films, but the placement of bodies, gestures, and, furthermore, the dreams that contain and emerge from them. Yet while A Burning Hot Summer may be the only film he’s made in the 21st century not shot in black-and-white, once the senior Maurice Garrel (in his final role) appears as an apparition in his grandson’s hospital bed-bound vision, the personal and the fantastical have formed their most natural relationship.

Close-Up is a feature that spotlights films now playing on Mubi. Yui Kiyohara's Our House, which is receiving an exclusive global online premiere on Mubi, is showing from August 28 – September 26, 2019 in Mubi's Debuts series. In Yui Kiyohara’s Our House, home is where the heart hides and where it haunts, refusing change and connection. Four women inhabit the two-storied house in question. There are those who want to leave and those who want to stay, but all are weighed down by an emotional strain: a widow with a new love and her still-grieving daughter, a working girl with shady business ties and a jobless one with no memory at all, who wishes to start anew. Kiyohara ties these twos together with a metaphysical strand, a slight revelation of a possibly cross-dimensional event: never do the tenants see the others; instead, they unknowingly live together at once, crowded by many and yet in total isolation.

Original “Beverly Hills, 90210” star Shannen Doherty is set to join her former co-stars – Jason Priestley, Jennie Garth, Ian Ziering, Gabrielle Carteris, Brian Austin Green and Tori Spelling – for BH90210, Fox’s highly anticipated new series airing this summer. For four seasons, Doherty starred as “Brenda Walsh” on the groundbreaking teen drama, but this time when the cast gets back together, it will come with a big twist: the seven former teen idols will be playing heightened versions of themselves in the brand-new serialized drama – with a healthy dose of irreverence – that is inspired by their real lives and relationships with each other.
Having gone their separate ways since the original series ended 19 years ago, Shannen, Jason, Jennie, Ian, Gabrielle, Brian, and Tori reunite when one of them suggests it’s time to get a “Beverly Hills, 90210” reboot up and running. But getting it going may make for an...

The news is also bittersweet, as her participation will highlight the glaring absence of their friend and castmate, Luke Perry.
It's also possible that tragic circumstances led to Doherty changing her mind about participation, as it's not difficult to imagine the group of friends found solace in each other during their time of grief.
Regardless, with the addition of Doherty, my interest has been piqued to the point BH90210 has become must-see television!

Original Beverly Hills, 90210 star Shannen Doherty is set to join her former co-stars – Jason Priestley, Jennie Garth, Ian Ziering, Gabrielle Carteris, Brian Austin Green, and Tori Spelling – for BH90210, Fox’s highly anticipated new series airing this summer.

Shannen Doherty is set to reprise the role of Brenda Walsh in Fox’s upcoming “BH90210” series, Variety has learned.
She will join fellow original “Beverly Hills, 90210” cast members Jason Priestley, Jennie Garth, Ian Ziering, Gabrielle Carteris, Brian Austin Green and Tori Spelling, who have all already signed on to the project. The six-episode series is set to air this summer.
Coming 19 years after the original series finished airing, the new show will feature the seven former teen idols playing “heightened versions of themselves with a healthy dose of irreverence – that is inspired by their real lives and relationships with each other.”
Doherty is also known for her roles in various other TV series, including “Charmed,” “Little House on the Prairie” and “Our House.” Recently, she returned to another of her most famous roles, playing a part in the reimagined version of “Heathers.” Doherty played Heather Duke in the original.

Over the course of their five-decade bond, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young have joined together for a number of tours. Some, like Crosby, Stills & Nash’s 1982 Daylight Again trek during David Crosby’s drug addiction, were nerve-wracking. Others, like the quartet’s 1974 reunion tour, were huge-scale and overwhelming. But Csny’s 2006 Freedom of Speech tour – the foursome’s last road work to date – presented a new set of challenges.
That year, Neil Young released Living with War, an album of scathing songs about the Iraq and Afghanistan wars and George W. Bush.
