It's a PASSer!
Patient44423 November 2013
We had "House of 9", we had "Would you rather" now we have "The Devil's Dozen". Movies with the same plot are starting to become a phenomenon sadly, cause lets face it, we have 100 The Blair Witch Project & Paranormal Activity copies, easily another 200 zombie movies per year, exorcism films are becoming a trend and haunted houses + gore are becoming something of a natural thing here.

Did we need "The Devil's Dozen? No! Is it really that bad? Well let's think: 1) the acting, especially from the ladies, is laughable, annoying and just sad. 2) there is one Afro-American here and they made a complete stereotype out of him. 3) way too easy to predict. at one point one character says "I did not see that coming". Hah! That was one funny line tho. 4) originality? far from it. 5) nice kill-shots? nothing like that here. 6) logic? escaped from min 5 I think, run away and left you alone with Devil's Dozen. maybe you'll be luckier, and see it with some friends and laugh a little.

Therefore, The Devil's Dozen is nothing new, nothing impressive, slightly under average, not a complete letdown, but it's way too easy to find something better. Therefore, my advice, leave it, try "House of 9" that one has some good parts as I remember.

Anyway, if you do decide to watch it, and you have seen other horrors like it, post a comment here, tell us what you think, is this a good add to the gender, or sadly, another Dozen movie.....

Reheated horror fayre
pabrookes2 December 2013
The entire premise of The Devil's Dozen is pretty obvious to anyone who's a fan of portmanteau horror — twelve disparate strangers are thrown together in a room and must recount their past misdeeds. The gimmick here is that someone must be killed every twelve minutes and it's up to the group to ensure the sole survivor is the most righteous one.

So herein lie the two big issues with this film. Firstly, as someone who's enjoyed the likes of the Vault of Horror and Tales from the Crypt movies, I knew pretty much how it was going to end. Secondly, as eleven people have to die in about seventy minutes, there's no time to develop any of the characters, so they end up as crude stereotypes.

Its only saving grace is that, for something clearly filmed on a micro-budget, the production values are pretty good.

This would — with fewer characters and less gore — have made a pretty good episode of The Twilight Zone. But I wouldn't recommend it as a film.

Not the greatest horror script
gerry_barnaby5 December 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Likes : The entire premise of The Devil's Dozen is pretty obvious to anyone who's a fan of portmanteau horror, twelve disparate strangers are thrown together in a room and must recount their past misdeeds. The gimmick here is that someone must be killed every twelve minutes and it's up to the group to ensure the sole survivor is the most righteous one. This has that tale of the crypt keeper feel to it but it not a brilliant film or an Oscar winner, with the ending it show it also has that film devil concept to it, but this is one film I wouldn't rush out to buy on DVD.

It is how ever a DVD you should rent first before paying out the price in the store for it, because it wasn't the greatest film to watch has this type of film has been done some many time there getting old.

Dislikes : Where do I start, the subplot to the script is seriously poor in telling the story because there is not back story of any reason given than the fact they have to kill each other, the actor was OK but it wasn't brilliant, there was a few actor that weren't convincing at all it felt wooden at time like they've fresh out of acting school or still students of acting.

The fact that the story is they have to kill each other in 12 minutes you don't get to feel or get a feeling for the characters because there no time to real get to know them & what they've done to realise why their there.it a very poor written film in script the concept is good but I think it could of been better.

Too many ego's not a good enough story.

Warning: Spoilers
Bad movie alert!! And how. This movie only exists as a resume padding for Hollywood B movie actors. From start to finish you are force fed posing second rate actors all trying to look scared, and strong at the same time. Each character is just a stereotype of one form or another, and worse yet all are just characters that these people have all played before. There is nothing about this movie that can redeem it, I was hoping for a lot more even after I saw C. Thomas Howell was in it. There was no need for this movie to be made, and there is even less reason that you should waste your time watching it. You will not Enjoy this film.

12 Little Indians
nogodnomasters22 January 2018
Warning: Spoilers
12 people who appear to be already dead are placed together in a room where they must judge the most guilty and most innocent, with only one getting a "second chance." They must kill someone every 12 minutes or else it will be done for them, which would have been my one and only option. Some of the people are a preacher, Air Force member, robber, CEO, lawyer, cop, banker, mom etc. all the usual suspects. Their stories were pretty bad and their story telling was worse. The acting was sad all around as I was hoping they would all die slow horrible deaths. A rather pointless film.

Difficult to sit through. Doesn't work as a rental.

Parental Guide: F-bombs. No sex or nudity.

5.9 out of 10

Warning: Spoilers
..was the rating on another movie site. That isn't the one I give it. When I saw 5.9, I figured it would be a decent movie at minimum. After the third or fourth spoken line, I paused the movie and checked the rating. The acting was that freaking bad. It said 5.9/10. I returned to the movie. I figured it would get better.

I checked the spoiler box so if you missed it, you have one last chance to flee.

When part of the group was released at the beginning, I thought to myself, "Oh they are getting rid of the bad actors. I won't have to see them again. The movie is really going to start rolling!" WRONG! The released group was taken to a private room and we would spend the rest of the movie TRAPPED with them.

When it was revealed they had to kill off one another, I erroneously assumed they would kill off the worst actors first. Wrong yet again.

If you haven't picked up on it yet, the movie is filled with bad acting. The only believable actor was the preacher (Thomas Howell). Everyone else was bad. Some ridiculously worse than others.

When a movie fails, people discuss why so. Some say it was the acting and others will say it was the story or the lines. With this I can honestly say it was both. If you replaced these actors with Oscar winners, the movie would still fail because the dialogue sucks. There is nothing there.

What makes things worse is that we never hear each person's story. How can you figure out who is the guiltiest when you don't know why most are there? It seemed as though there was quite a few innocents.

The basic idea behind this was interesting but that's all.

What a waste (tiny spoilers for the beginning only)
fakeslashdash624 November 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I'm personally a huge fan of these type of movies, the "people trapped in a room" sort of thing (saw, cube, exam, would you rather, truth or die, nine dead etc). But this movie? Not so much.

I get that it's a low budget movie and I really wasn't expecting much, but still this movie fails to deliver on every level. Bad filming, bad acting, bad set you name it. But the worst of all is the script.

There isn't anything good I can say about it.

The characters are so generic and boring they literally have no name. Seriously, check the cast credit and you'll see most of them don't have a name.

The premise is flawed to begin with. 12 people are being told that every 12 minutes one of them must die until only 1 will be left. They say something in the beginning about identifying one of them but since that clearly isn't the case (some of them die totally random right at the beginning) and as the movie progresses it's completely disregarded.

They start talking to each other and say why they are horrible people and deserve to die. Seriously? Why? Wouldn't that be the last thing you'd do? and why wouldn't they assume anyone would lie?

And either way, the entire point is that they are going to die anyway, so either they should have simply waited their time or they should have gone on the offensive and started killing each other.

Just waiting around and talking us to death makes no sense except the director had to waste an hour and half worth of a movie.

Nothing really happens, just a bunch of pointless talking that doesn't really progress the plot.

Last but not least is the twist in the end. I won't spoil it, but I'll just say it really wasn't worth it. It wasn't that much of a twist nor is it really that interesting and certainly not worth waiting an hour and half for.

TLDR:

Don't waste your time on this, you can find something far better to watch.

Bad example of the genre
longview-776316 June 2019
I typically love movies like this, but the best thing I can say about The Devil's Dozen is that some of the dialogue reminded me of an incredibly dark View Askew movie, so maybe Jeremy London learned some things from Mallrats. The worst thing I could say would be any honest comment about the plot or acting. It's mostly predictable, and it somehow squanders the natural tension a ticking-clock murder movie should have. Plot holes and dropped threads are everywhere, which is an especially bad thing when the story is so minimalist. I give it a point for being a "people trapped in a room" thriller, and a point for a few quality lines. That's it.

The only good was a minute's scene at the end.

Warning: Spoilers
So , the movie begins , a really promising intro but within the first glance on the set you realise it looks like really bad theatre ... The dialogues were also pointless . I was wondering "what does an actor like Eric Roberts has to do in such a film?" I was waiting for the answer ... but I seriously couldn't sit through the film . I thought ok... everyone seems at least amateur . Eric must play the devil or something ... I skipped to the end and there he is ! That guy has character ! The only star I gave this crappy film is just for his scene . Cunning eyes, wicked smile.

Just enjoy for what it is
Richwallie21 January 2014
Okay first off I would like to say always consider a movies budget. Now of course I know that sometimes you still get good movies from lower financed films.

OK from this point if you have not seen the film This Is A Spoiler!

Okay let's look at the actors first. The only actors I recognize is Omar Gooding which is Cuba Gooding Brother. I also recognize Eric Roberts which is Julia Roberts brother. There is also a couple of other familiar faces. These actors have been in decent films. But they aren't A list actors from a long shot. Keep this in mind. Everyone else is pretty much no names or at least don't stand out among elites. So already that sums up your acting core. And that being said you can't expect much more than just that Again I'm not making excuses but the talent just wasn't there. Now on to the acting. It wasn't excellent , it wasn't horrific. Given for what was available it was decent. Nothing more nothing less. It has comical moments that will keep you chuckling to blend in with the suspense. A lot of people mention that this movie was about killing and having 12 minutes to do so. But I seen a deeper message in fact it mentions in the beginning that they had to kill the person who was the guiltiest. And it seems like no one ever thought about what if they killed the little brunette that kept whining. which turned out to be the main reason. How would that have of affected everyone else's role? Who actually went to heaven and who went to hell?Would you have enough heart to die for the sake of not harming another human being to save yourself? When you see a person, do things always seem as they appear? These are the things you have to ask yourself... I watched the movie about 3 times already , and to be honest I enjoyed it. If you're not afraid of everyday things that make you think, even the little things its at least worth a watch. The Painting in the room revealed many messages...
