Based on Al Carretta's stage play 'I am Robert Mugabe', originally produced at Venue 260, Jurys Inn Hotel in the 2008 Edinburgh Festival Fringe. The original cast and crew of the stage play all feature in the film.
Originally intended as Al Carretta's debut feature film.
Shot and edited between February and July 2011, the screenplay diluted the key themes of the original 2008 stage production which saw the character of 'John Smith' bleed to death from a harrowing wound inflicted on his genitalia. Dying but still resolute after a stand-off that has lasted days and seen his father murdered by a mob, Smith empowers a cowardly Foreign Office worker to escape or hold up with him for one last stand.
Unhappy with the film's limited impact in sanitised form director Al Carretta announced in June 2012 he will be remaking the film using the original stage play.
Based on the 2008 stage play 'I Am Robert Mugabe', the original release title of the piece was intended to be 'Goodnight, Mr.Smith'. In December 2010, the film was cast in the UK via Casting Call Pro (now Mandy) under this title. With the film nearly complete, after attending The Guerrilla Filmmaker's Masterclass in London, June 2011, director Al Carretta took on board Chris Jones's seminar advice around creating impact with marketing and film titling. The film was launched as 'Africa In Her Blood' to deliberately try and capture a wider audience. The poster and tagline (taken from a low key section of dialogue) were also designed as direct marketing considerations.
