I love the show, but....
kristinacguzik4 August 2018
I love this show. Amy and Steve are great. The reason I gave it 7 stars is because at the end of the show, the situation is left undone and dangerous. The activity usually continues. A heap of really scary information about what's happening is given to families, as well as advice about how to clear the space.. The majority of families can't find shamans, reiki masters and mediums to do these clearings. It is very, very hard to find people with gifts to do these types of clearings. I would love the producers to bring in people to clear the spaces and incorporate in the clearings in the show.

The Dead Files
doccheckers10 June 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I look at this type of show for entertainment value. Putting aside the fact that Amy's psychic visions are amazingly close to Steve's detective work findings, I love watching the story unfold as the why and how of the haunting's history unfold. I wish the guy that covers up all the pictures would be more involved. The few comments that he makes give the impression that he's the skeptic who questions what appears to be unfolding before him. I'm not adverse to cursing at all, but Amy has a bit of a potty mouth. Probably 1/3 of her words are bleeped out...a bit unprofessional. In 2013, she's been taking a bit of holier than thou attitude. In one episode, she is insistent that the owner of a very old plantation house needs to tear it down. Rightfully so, the owner is indignant about the ridiculous suggestion and says he is not going to do it. In another episode, she and Steve throw all kinds of attitude at a man who ran a haunted house attraction. They didn't like the fact that he was making money off of the dead. Unless she and Steve are working for free, they're doing the same thing. She also throws a lot of attitude toward ghost hunting groups when she's doing it herself. It's gotten to be a bit hypocritical and annoying.

good show, overall

Warning: Spoilers
Let's have some context first: this is reality television. Anyone with an ounce of brain matter to rattle around has already figured out that reality television is orchestrated for the most part. How else could they create and market a show that doesn't totally lose focus or the original point of being broadcast on TV?

The reviewers complaining about fakery puzzle me. I'm not sure what they're expecting when they turn on a show like this. First, there is no method that can accurately and rationally prove the existence of the paranormal (ghosts, demons, etc). Second, the whole point of these kind of shows is to suspend your disbelief long enough to enjoy the show. Third, if you don't like mediums, psychic stuff or ghost stories; by all means skip it already. Save yourself - and us - the headache of getting upset over it. This is television, it's not meant to give you the secrets of life after death.

What I like about this show, is that Steve and Amy create an entirely new dynamic in the genre of paranormal investigation. I have watched MTV's Fear, Scariest Places on Earth, Ghost Adventures, Paranormal State and Psychic Kids. I have yet to see any of those shows feature a skeptical point of view longer than five minutes, let alone in every episode. So it's nice to see a character that is rooted in pure evidence. It's not unheard of for police to ask help from psychics to crack cases; so it's possible that Steve as a former homicide detective has experience dealing with mediums in the past.

Now Amy is another matter. Her behavior can get odd, which might confuse people or turn people off entirely. IMO it makes her look more genuine as several times she appears downright embarrassed to talk about the things she experiences. I have no reason to believe that she is deliberately misleading the audience or "faking" whatever it is that she's doing.

Just for the record - I don't believe in anything. I'm an agnostic, and reject any form of absolutism. Whether or not she can talk to ghosts isn't what concerns me; it's the fact that there's a lot we don't know about the human brain or the nature of consciousness to assume our perception is limited to our current time/space continuum. The US government wouldn't have sunk so much funding into remote viewing if they didn't think it had some practical application.

I'm going to give this an 8 out of ten. Good visuals, good sound effects, good music, and two excellent leads whom are competent in their field make this show worth watching. I would rather watch this than watch Snooki get DTF any day of the week.

Second most favorite paranormal show
kkpreston8 August 2022
I've been watching The Dead Files since it began. I find Amy to be very believable.

One reviewer gave one example of why he felt Amy was a fake. Amy said a helicopter crash involved it "spinning", yet he researched it & it clipped a mountain & exploded, instead.

Any is seldom 100% accurate. There are, more often than not, some inconsistencies between her information & Steve's research. It is for that reason that I find her credible. If she were spot on every time, I would be suspicious. I doubt any medium is 100% accurate. Her accuracies & inaccuracies both convince me she's the real deal.

Yes, she does have a potty mouth sometimes & yes, she's a little quirky at times. Sometimes she's on the show with makeup & sometimes with no makeup at all. The fact that she's not polished tells me she's not putting on any acts; just being herself. The first season, she was waaay out there. I don't know if the producers urged her to act that way, but it didn't last long.

Great Storytelling
clarkrebeccaanne23 July 2012
The discussion about this show seems to turn on whether it's "real" or not. I propose that it doesn't really matter. If you think it's fake, pretend that the legal disclaimer at the beginning says that the show is fictional, and enjoy a reality-TV-style drama about a medium and a cop who work together. Personally I think it's (mostly) real, but that's unimportant.

I find this show absolutely titillating because of the excellent storytelling. Most reality TV is carefully edited to make conversations flow just a little better (without necessarily changing their meanings), and they do it quite deftly here, interweaving the two story lines (that is, Steve and Amy) in a way that delights my brain when I want instant gratification. The (writers? producers?) throw down all the pieces of the puzzle in perfect order without quite connecting them; they let your imagination fill in the final, tiny gaps with the kind of lurid details that everyone's thinking but no one can say for sure. Steve gets what essentially amounts to the town gossip on the subject, and Amy embroiders them with colourful, often illuminating, and just a little bit graphic details.

Don't worry about reality. Take the homeowner's story at face value and enjoy the mystery's shocking solution!

Unconvincing
sebpopcorn24 July 2012
I watch all these paranormal shows but I think this is probably the worst I've seen.

Amy Allan walks around a location she knows "nothing" about making faces that have an animatronics look about them. Then she reveals some uncannily accurate information. Notably more accurate information than psychics ever give outside of this format, which has been used on shows like haunted homes etc. She's joined by a retired detective who does a great "I'm surprised at that!" face.

The first thing I find unconvincing about her is the way she'll tell you there's a dead person stood right in front of her but she barely gives it a second glance. If you really could see dead people wouldn't you be slightly more interested in looking at that than the camera?

Then there's the Lizzie Borden house. She tells a little girl in a previous episode that she was obsessed with that house as a child yet, the very next episode claims to have no idea where she is. Did she get there by rendition or what? That bears some explaining I think.

I gave up watching this one. I like ghost hunting shows but this just seems very phoney to me. Also, just as an aside I looked into the helicopter crash she described. The victim wasn't spinning around as she suggests, it clipped a hill and exploded instantly. The sensation of spinning around is just the kind of thing a bogus psychic would slip in because it sounds fitting.

Interesting but
vicdru13 February 2020
Started watching this series and wonder, as I do about all these types shows, why do they only investigate at night? I know from experience that spirits come out in the daytime as well. And why in almost every episode is there a spirit who wants to kill people or make people kill people? And why are there Never any nice spirits? Not everyone who passed is evil.

So difficult to watch
kssmith2010 October 2012
Warning: Spoilers
I love watching paranormal shows and movies, and will even confess to watching a few dismal ones in the past just BECAUSE it's paranormal. I first heard of this show a few months ago and decided to give it a shot. I do believe in spirits and I do believe there are people in this world with special gifts that Amy appears to have. First, the retired detective is such a cliché, that it's hard to watch him at times. When he interviews clients, he makes these facial expressions constantly that clearly are meant to indicate interest and awe, and also to show the viewer that they are saying something here that you should be interested and awed by also. Second, I would never assume that someone who says they are psychic, is not psychic. That is irrelevant and my rating has nothing do with her abilities. Amy Allan however, is very strange in her reactions to a "haunted" location. She makes weird faces, and noises, and stutters as though she can't describe what she's trying to say. It is just so bizarre to watch. There have also been inconsistencies with the show, namely her telling a child in one episode that she was obsessed with Lizzie Borden at one time, and then a few episodes later, they went to the Lizzie Borden house, and she made out like she had no idea where she was, or knew anything about the house. The last thing is the fact that we have to just trust they don't relay any information to each other about a case, since that is supposed to be one of the most interesting/compelling things about the show I guess.

Best paranormal show.....
kurt-20005 November 2019
...on TV. Whether you believe in the paranormal, or you believe that Amy is a physical medium, it's entertaining. There is no middle ground. No gray area since there are no stories like this on other shows. They've even been to places that other paranormal shows have explored and Amy comes up with a different take on the nature of the haunting. Like the episode where she investigated the Lizzy Borden home. I like the cast for this show and I believe them. I might be gullible and proven wrong, but I believe in the afterlife as well. And that's what this show is all about. I've always been a skeptic regarding the paranormal, but they make the subject interesting and thought provoking. I respect people of faith, agnostics and atheists.

How do the viewers know that the two them do not contact each throughout their investigation? Cell phones are a big deal...I have my doubts.

Ghost Medium Theater
vashspamster25 September 2011
After watching this first episode I got the feeling throughout that this was a farce. I can't bring myself to believe that Steve and Amy don't have the same info. This isn't proved in a rational way and all you're given is empty promises that she doesn't know anything before hand and that her and Steve don't compare notes. This show contains some very dramatized over-acted scenes that I couldn't take serious. The owner of the house for example seemed to be lying when questioned about why he chose to perform the "experiments" that he did or he was just improvising pretty terribly. When Amy was "taken over" several times I just didn't buy it. Combine these scenes with some of the other ghost show tropes such as; shaky cameras, unnecessary special effects for mundane things *footage of car driving past flickers and disappears), scary music, and weird/silly repetitive editing when Amy is talking in the house. I gave the show a chance, which is only fair, but I can't say that this convinced me any more than all the other ghost-type shows littering the airwaves at present.

Overall, people who want to believe will. People who question these shows from the start wont be given enough reason to believe any of this isn't BS.

Interesting but repetitive
mpn-239579 November 2020
I do find this show interesting, it keeps me watching. The acting is bad though. They need to change it up , it's always a demon or a bad ghost ...it would be nice if once there was a nice or protective ghost . The format is always the same. It is watchable though

Unintentionally Funny
thatsgottahurt-16 October 2022
Of all these types of shows, this one has the most obviously staged and pre researched "discoveries". The "medium" has very little credibility, even among the plethora of other fakes in circulation. I don't believe for one minute that she has ever seen a ghost, spectre or any other type of paranormal entity. Her exaggerated facial expressions and dramatic manner of speech when revealing her findings, smacks of dishonesty. The former police officer does his best impression of a stoic, measured individual, who can be sympathetic and understanding, but comes across as more of a prop to give credence to the mediums fibbing. It's funny but sad at the same time.

Great show!
soulful0129 October 2014
This is actually an original and amazing idea for a very old genre. Steve and Amy work very well together, and you can tell that they get more comfortable working with each other as the show progresses. I don't know if Amy's abilities are real or not, and who cares? This show is way better than the shows where plumbers, models, etc. spend an hour dropping the F-bomb while scaring themselves and yelling at nothing. Amy and Steve have devoted their lives to being professional seekers of truth, and have the credentials to back that up. It's not a hobby, or something that sounded like a good idea at the time for them. They also don't need to use pseudo-scientific nonsense to try to give themselves credibility.

To the critics: First, Amy is a PHYSICAL medium, so she feels a lot of what she's seeing, and that's partly why her genuine facial expressions appear on the show. Also, if you've watched the Travel Channel videos of her days out, she's just naturally a bubbly and animated person.

Second, yes, she's been on other shows, which actually establishes her bona fides rather than discredits her. She stated clearly in the episode of A Haunting that she was a physical medium in addition to being a paranormal investigator. The two are not mutually exclusive, so try and think outside the box.

Third, if you knew anything about producing a show, you'd know that many hours of footage never make it to TV. Amy and Steve work independently, and the show's very talented editors later add the background music, etc., and they edit the many hours worth of footage down to about 42 minutes. That's why they are able to show Amy and Steve uncovering their findings as the show progresses. It's called the magic of television. You're not watching a live show. Try and think outside the box, OK? Basically, just enjoy the many locations in America they visit, and the stories that people have to tell. I've purchased the available seasons of the show, and the Revisited episodes as well. If you don't like the show, that's your right. That doesn't require trashing the show simply because you don't understand TV production, or have personal issues with the cast.

This show is awesome!

Excellent Show
kbowerscrabb30 November 2011
One of our favorite shows, and looking forward to next season! All people involved are very professional and it is an absolute joy to finally see a show that involves a psychic communicator that is real! Amy is amazing and her teamwork with Steve is so much fun to watch unfold. I really cannot understand some of the other reviews, other than they are nonbelievers in something beyond this life. Thank you Amy and Steve for your hard work and ability to help others in their quest to find answers! There are those of us that appreciate what you do. We even watch the re-runs, just in case we missed some fine details. We absolutely cannot wait for next season!!

good show if you like paranormal stuff
PRVanAken4 November 2011
I tend to believe what psychics say in shows about spirits haunting places more than what so-called scientific evidence investigation shows come up with. The Dead Files has given me a real sense what a creepy haunting is like. Better than trying to make us believe in the equipment used on ghost investigation shows... the ultimate bogus device being The Ovilus. A prime example of a show with purely manipulated "evidence" and video edit faking is what you see on Ghost Adventures. It's in the same class as Most Haunted out of the UK.

As far as shows featuring psychic work, The Dead Files is better than average and has a more authentic feel than the above-mentioned physical evidence shows.

Entertaining and Informative, but Pretty Much No Help
spasek19 September 2019
It's amazing how many of these shows have investigators and such who claim that they want to help the people who are being plagued or harassed by spirits or entities. Pretty much all of them are unable to give any true, meaningful help. They're like exterminators who say, "Yes, you've got an insect problem" but have no idea how to actually get rid of them. In short, they are little more than people who are only able to confirm what's going on.

I've seen a few episodes where Amy claims that a house can't be cleansed or it's an angry house, and so she recommends that the owners leave and give it up for a lost cause.

Spirits are nothing more than tramp souls who are stuck. Quite often, they are stuck due to a tragedy that occurred, and they have no idea how to move on. Keep in mind that everything is made of energy. All energy contains within it its own vibration. Walk into a church, and people tend to feel a "good" or "positive" vibration. Walk into a bar or a place where a violent crime has been committed, and the vibrational field tends to feel "bad" or "negative."

What people fail to understand is that the vibrational field can be changed. Blessing a house is one way. However, this tends to lend the focus more on the ritual rather than actually changing the energy.

Changing the vibrational energy is something that technically anyone can do. People who are very spiritual (not necessarily religious) are able create very high (positive) vibrational fields. These are fields that tramp souls and negative entities find extremely distasteful and overwhelming, which is why they can't remain in the same space. I have helped a few people change the energy in their homes. I will even do the same thing in hotel rooms, as you have no idea what kind person/people occupied the space before you did.

I have had a couple of experiences with tramp souls, and as soon as I've closed my eyes and expanded a field of pure white energy, the souls immediately vacate the space.

It's always important to know the history of the house that you buy. It is also just as important to create a spiritual vibrational field that will change the energy of your dwelling to a much more pleasant one. People who are sensitive can feel vibrational changes very easily. And because everyone creates his/her own vibrational field (including tramp souls), it's necessary to build a field of positive, spiritual energy.

The Dead Files is intriguing from an investigative standpoint (as are all of these types of shows), but they're like donuts...going round and round without really getting to the heart/root of the problem. Perhaps as people continue to evolve and become more spiritual, shows where people are REALLY able to be of help, will become more commonplace.

0 of 10 would be too high of a rating
HeadMMoid3 October 2011
Nothing about this show was believable. Each of DiSchiavi's scenes/interviews felt like it was scripted. DiSchiavi himself apparently channels bad 1950s detective movies, and seems completely artificial. The people he interviews don't come across as real, especially real people interviewed on camera for the first time; but rather as bad actors. Having a self-proclaimed medium as the second part of the investigation team highlights the bogus nature of the show. The reputation of mediums for fakery is a long established tradition in ghost hunting. This doesn't mean that Allen is a faker, but the profession cannot normally be taken too seriously, and rarely comes across as believable on film.

Whether or not the two investigators speak to each other before or during the investigation, a highly touted aspect of the investigator's relationship, is irrelevant. You know there are support personnel, and there is no way to know how they influence what the main investigators know or say. Even more importantly is the final editing, which can be used to include or exclude whatever is needed to produce the desired result.

Finally, the most important question for any show such as this is; Do the show's characters come across as effective and trustworthy. Whether they actually are or are not such, they come across as bogus.

The show is a waste of time and electricity, which, given the current popularity of the subject with some groups of high credulity, means it will, unfortunately, be around for a while.

Watch this show and try to suspend skepticism
mshafferronin5 November 2011
My wife and I watch a lot of paranormal TV Shows and we have agreed that to watch these shows you have to just take it at face value that the producers are being honest with the viewers; if you don't do this simple thing, why waste your time watching to begin with? We have watched 2 episodes now and we have both gone from quite a bit of disbelief and skeptisism about what is being presented to absolute amazement at what is happening. Taking these types of shows at face value, not believing that we are being misled or lied to, results in an experience that is profound and honestly, somewhat uncomfortable.

No, there aren't any silicon or steroidally enhanced hotties for the hormonal crowd but we believe this gives it even more credence. They are not trying to distract you with beautiful people instead hoping to open your mind with the amazing things that are a part of every episode.

Open your minds and give it a try, I believe you won't be disappointed.

What about the fallout?
tmpgil15 March 2023
Okay-I used to really love this show. But it seems now pretty far fetched that Amy recommends stranger and stranger folks to help homeowners out. Seems leaning towards the Voodoo and witches a lot lately. I think each show should have a documentary style follow-up. How hard was it to find a Shaman to get rid of evil beings? Where do you find a white witch or a Voodoo priestess? Where do these Catholic priests come from to perform exorcisms on a home or property? What kind of financial ruin would be caused by an open gateway letting demons in? Could they sell a house without disclosing? What does it cost? Or would s show pay for those blessings? What liability is involved? Curiouser and curiouser.

Worst program I have ever seen....
forasong230 December 2012
This has to be one of the worst programs I have seen in many years, and there are a lot of horrible ones out there. Save yourself some time and do not watch this crud. Hopefully it will be off the air soon.

I do not know what happened to broadcast but it has gone down the tubes in the last 10 years and this is the worst of the bunch. How the hell does something like this even go to a second season??

Please stop making crap like this anymore and actually put some thought into what you are producing....

Following around someone with a camera that says they are physic and all that happens is this woman saying stuff to the camera, no evidence, no footage, just a bunch of sheeple going "Wow really?"

Again, do not waste your time on this horrible program and shame on the producers of such garbage.

VERY Real
karenbelanger27 November 2011
I've watched Amy Allan for years on The Discovery Channel in "A Haunting". She has been working with local authorities for years as well, helping solve cold cases. They wouldn't gave given her this show if she wasn't legit. As someone who also has "sensitivities" but not anything nearly like Amy, I can see right through "fake" very easily. I was shocked at the reviews because I know dozens of people, friends, and other acquaintances who also watch and love the show. Many of us have been able to "see" people who have passed or are deceased, or just sensed their presences since we were very young. For those who have never experienced anything paranormal or don't believe it is easy to dismiss it.

entertaining, but unconvincing
surreybird9 March 2023
I have this on in the background while I work. I generally love these paranormal shows but this one is by far the least convincing of all of them.

Steve Di Schiavi is the only reason I watch and to be honest if it was just him on his own the show would be infinitely better. He's more than capable of carrying a show on his own. He seems like a nice guy: burly, no-nonsense tough guy who speaks his mind, calls people on their BS and turns into a teddybear when someone gets upset.

Amy Allan spends the entire time gurning at the camera every chance she gets. Announcing there's a 'dead person' with horrific injuries standing in front of her, or telling the clients that a ghost is going to kill their child or give them cancer with a psychotic grin plastered across her face is the most disturbing thing about the show. Some of the things she comes out with like spooky invisible tree roots coming into the house poisoning people, or telling people that they're being molested by aliens in their sleep is so far fetched it's laughable. Everything is 'baaaaaaaad'. She does tone it down in later seasons but still... i don't dislike her as a person - its fine for people to be a bit odd, but i do find her delivery very offputting.

Unlike every other 'paranormal' show there is not one single bit of scientific gadgetry or 'evidence' backing up Amy's claims: no tape recordings, no video, no sls, no emf no nothing, and nobody addresses the 'dead people' directly or even seems interested in asking them what they want or need.

This to me is where the show massively falls down in comparison to other shows like Kindred Spirits where the investigators treat the spirits with respect. They're not just 'some dead guy' that needs to be forcefully evicted by exorcists and demonologists or chaos magicians (whatever tf those are). They were a person and sometimes they just need to be helped, or heard, negotiated with, noticed, or even told they're dead. I find it a little hard to believe that so many homes are filled with EVIL - even with Kindred Spirits scary things happening are frequently non-malicious and misinterpreted by the homeowners, which seems far more likely and balanced.

The best bit is the end where the 'sketch artist' rendition is revealed. I wheeze laughed almost every time in the early seasons- 90% of the drawings looked like they had been done by a 7 year old. I don't know how anyone at the table - particularly Steve - was able to keep a straight face while they look at a borderline stickman with eyebrows and say 'oh my god this looks absolutely like the person I saw'.... Mercifully/disappointingly (i'm not sure which) they upgrade their sketch artists after about season 4. I almost prefer the earlier seasons for the comedy value.

So awful I found myself wincing all throughout
kendra_meyer300422 June 2012
I'm watching this right now on Television, It wasn't really planned, I was just hanging out in my room. I've been seeing the commercials nonstop for the past week so I decided to give it a try.

First off: the ex-cop or whatever he is. His conversations are dull and boring. His expressions are bland and don't seem to show any real emotion even though he attempts slight facial expressions for dramatic effect. The people he talks to cannot possibly be real people. If the people he interviews aren't actors I will be shocked. Their words are perfectly put together, their actions are robotic and unreal feeling. Altogether mediocre interviews.

Second: Amy is the MOST ANNOYING person I've ever watched on Television The physical medium is quite annoying. She's constantly walking around the house smiling while saying "they want to kill people". Why? I don't understand why. Her facial expressions are over exaggerated, sometimes inappropriate for what she's saying. She half mumbles her words through some kind of clenched teeth over dramatic expression. She overall makes me wince in pain every time she walks around the house and pretends to see things. Constantly repeating "it scared me" "I can't breath"....and on and on repetitive I don't like this blah blah blah, this makes me uncomfortable...

Third: the facts that both sides come up with are too close. They'll show the medium say something about a very small detail of something, and then cut to another scene with the other investigator directly proving what the other person had seen. It's unrealistic. The entire time we're cutting between over edited scenes where facts obviously line up with each other perfectly, they're in perfect order too, matched up as if the medium hit each point or fact in the show just as the other guy did. They didn't even try to split things like this up. Their attempts to not make it match exactly are not discreet at all, and it's obvious that they have come up with something the medium could say to not exactly hit the same subject the investigator came up with but have an obvious connection between the two "facts"

Altogether it's the most fake, worst, most gut-wrenching show I've ever seen. It shocked me so much that I had to get online as soon as possible to see what other people had to say about this show. ECK!!!
