Good Effort , great cast , best intentions
saksham-649093 April 2023
The show is making a good effort to try to explore the different dimensions of modern Indian families. Shows how a family tries to stay true to their roots along with embracing novel concepts and ideas such as body positivity, independence of women, letting the elders be human, LGBTQ. The family seems to be cultured but at the same time not orthodox in their views, presenting a new alternate reality. Atleast for now, this seems the case. It may not be very relatable for mass as of now. The starting is very limp and it seems like a bad copy of SvS or TMKOC , but picks up after the first two episodes, as it explores serious issues in the family, with the light silly comedy. It shows that families can be dysfunctional, quirky, irritating, loving and accepting all at the same time. Some ideas feel a bit far stretched but that is the point of entertainment industry, to shape society. A very refreshing respite from the saazish culture of daily soap and the mindless comedy of TMKOC. Looking forward to see more issues being explored, and hoping it doesn't take the turn towards hindu hatred or nation bashing.

Refreshing
Prasil1511 March 2023
The last good family comedy content I watched was Sandwich Forever on Sony Liv. After a long, a good family comedy content is back.

Ratna Pathak Shah as Hemlata is fabulous. It feels like I am again watching Sarabhai Vs. Sarabhai. Atul Kulkarni as Ramesh Dholakia is remarkable. Raunaq Kamdar is stunning. All other star cast was memorable, this is what a comedy content always misses, but this one doesn't.

I loved the show. The show was not still like the old previous shows of Hats of prduction, like Khichdi & Sarabhai, but it is worth watching. I wish they release more episodes very soon.

In nutshell, don't miss this one.

Dysfunctional but relatable
sanjeevanwar3 April 2023
Anwar Says: Reviewing it after all the episodes of first season are streaming . From the house of SARABHAI vs. SARABHAI and KHICHDI , the creator Atish Kapadia has been able to create the magic of humour and which does not sound stale. Story of four generation of a Gujju. Family, dysfunctional but staying together. Introduction of characters in the first episode is quick and smart and punch lines continued in almost every second dialogue.

Took off well but slowed down a bit with some repetition from sixth episode and the climax could have been better written. Dialogues are mundane and even non- Gujarati audience relate . Ratna Patna Shah, the Baa, who drinks champagne in a steel glass but doesn't eat onion, played the character different from Mrs. Maya Sarabhai. Other women characters like Ayesha Julka, Sanah Kapur and Minal Sahu are dominant. Raj Babbar is extra subdued and Atul Kulkarni initially struggles to gel but picks up after two episodes with the script.

Overall a fresh wind after so much of violence, sex and foul language on OTT, post Panchayat and Gullak . Watch two episodes every night while having dinner, even on weekdays, if not finished this weekend.

Full on comedy, loved the show
purvarawat9 April 2023
Loved it... Light weight ... Comedy show. Ratna Pathak steals the show. Dont know...why people wrote bad reviews. The show is not stereotyping any region, but people have the tendency to make big deal out of everything nowadays.

Not necessarily that everything should make perfect sense in entertainment. And people who are comparing it with Sarabhai vs Sarabhai, should realize even the characters in that series were not perfect. Infact the characters were quite unreal. Every actor in this show acted well. The show is also giving good and noteworthy messages... Looking forward for next season...

Happy family is a masterpiece 👌
duhanpradeep-7774929 March 2023
Happy family is a complete family entertainment.

The cast is so so good , specially Ratna Pathak .

She is outstanding and her punches on point every time . Atul Kulkarni is adorable , first time seeing him in very different character and all characters did fantastic job . Very well written and directed by AATISH KAPADIA 👌 . He is genius and again he proved. Khichdi ,Sarabhai vs Sarabhai and now Happy family . Hatsoff to Hatsoff production 👌.

Eagerly Waiting for more episodes and season .

A big Congratulations to JD and Aatish kapadia and their team. I would highly recommend it to all 😊😊 Please watch.

Slow start
jamila_thesung13 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The first episode is pretty awful. Second one slightly better

But slowly the dynamics and characters settle down and humour, drama starts to emerge.

Initially the grandmothers character just comes off as a bully with loud, tired insults to her granddaughter-in-law. Its quite off-putting tbh. But then there's a turning point with a clever, not so insulting whip. When she's convincing some gents only pandit to read her grand-dil's palm and she says - consider her a gents only, her hair is shorter than your nose hair. Slowly, she seems to back off a bit also, which is a releif

The father's character slowly shines and is very endearing. And slowly the family members drama builds up through the house and starts to seem effortless. The drama builds up in the end, and I hope there's a second season. Because it feels like the writers have just started to get their groove.

Would like to see more dynamic frames and moving shots. The meal scenes in episode 8 really came together camera wise and writing wise. It felt like a real complete family, where everyone has different things on their minds, and different agendas. Conversations seemed to seamlessly jump from one dynamic to another.

Over-written, over-acted, over preachy and under-entertaining!
xpics27 March 2023
Aatish Kapadia-JD Majethia is a smart writer-producer combo who have redefined the sit-com space with some pathbreaking shows like 'Sarabhai vs Sarabhai', 'Khichdi' to 'Wagle ki Duniya'. Unfortunately 'Happy Family' lacks the originality that the brand is so known for and is just a regurgitated cocktail of many of their past shows.

The loud-n-lively Gujarati family backdrop is repeated once again here. But while Sarabhai was distinctly different from Khichdi world, this one borrows from both and thereby muddles up. Then taking a cue from 'Wagle ki Duniya' it tries to tackle too many society issues from women equality, male chauvinism, saas-bahu saga, racism, class divide to even sexual preferences. Unlike earlier attempts the treatment is not nuanced and at times to blatant to be believable.

One major issue is that the show is over-written. Kapadia tries to squeeze in a punch in literally every line. The attempt is so overdone that it can put Anees Bazmee and Sajid-Farhad style of dialogue writing to shame. There are no breathers to enjoy a gag. Before one finishes, the next one is shoved in your face. And thereby the show tries too hard to be funny! Also the humor varies from classy ones to pure PJs - and thereby this show doesn't get a distinctive or uniform tonality.

The ever-dependable Ratna Pathak Shah, sadly, goes over-the-top this time and this is the second major issue with the show. While they might have designed her boisterous character to be the highlight of the show, she starts annoying after a point. She plays a pretty-much conflicted character - orthodox enough to hate her bahu's modern ways but, at the same time, modern enough to endorse her pay-parity and professional prospects. She keeps jabbering is every frame of the show and one can actually relate to her family members who are irritated of her unending chattering.

Beyond the use of a single 'expletive' and the customary gay-coming-out-of-closet track (forced in to suit the OTT sensibilities), the show pretty much qualifies to be a TV sitcom. Also, as per OTT mandate, the show ends midway to give way for a season 2.

Ratna Pathak Shah remains in the forefront throughout and while she often goes overboard, she is the factor that keeps all characters in the show connected. Raj Babbar, as her husband, is far more restrained and plays something different from his customary offerings. Atul Kulkarni as the guy cornered by everyone in family makes his gullible character quite watchable.

This show could have been far more effective and entertaining if the makers had just tried to be true to themselves!

Must watch !!
mahmed-2066410 March 2023
If you are a fan of JD and Aatish Kapadia's universe. This show will give you lots of deja vu moments from khichdi, baa bahu aur baby, Sarabhai vs Sarabhai and from lots of there other shows.

Light-hearted comedy scenes, quirky one-liners, nok jhok between characters (not forced felt organic), and a perfect amount of emotions are trademarks of hat's off-production and you will find them here as well.

Everyone is perfect in their characters, Atul Kulkarni is perfect, and lovely to see him in a different avatar but Ratna mam 1 hi dil he kitni baar jeetegi aap.

Waiting for the rest of the episodes.

This show is such a drag
prayagsuthar12 March 2023
With every character being an exaggerated stereotype, and every episode trying to heavy-handedly cram some multiple messages down our throats, this show is an utter drag.

We only got through the first 2 episodes. The first episode was alright, because it had a bit more of a clear-cut story. Episode 2 just didn't make any sense at all. And in both, the comedy was extraordinarily flat, with poor delivery and writing that makes it seem more like the hip young people are disrespecting and berating the out-of-touch old geezers.

And what kind of "happy family" is this, that fights and insults each other so much over such little things? The title suggests the show is supposed to be relatable, but their "antics" are so out-of-the-ordinary that this has to be the most dysfunctional, bizarre TV family I've ever seen.

This ain't a happy family, to put it shortly. Really, it's rather disappointing.

Breath of Fresh Air in Crowded OTT Space
nidhipatani25 March 2023
Don't go by the ratings. Happy Family Conditions Apply is just too good. In the world of crime, violence and tragedies, this is a breath of fresh air in the OTT space and I hope that other producers also take note and think out side the box.

Just finished 6 episodes and had a lot of fun watching the Dholakia's dealing with their crazy family and situations.

Atul Kulkarni as chemist is too good and Ratna Pathak also has given us another character to root for after Maya Sarabhai.

Perfect weekend watch. Thank you Hats Off Production and Prime Video for brining this fun show to us. Must watch!!!

Not a family show
saketshriwas22 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Many other reviews have covered how the show is similar to khichdi or Sarabhai yet without any humor. So i will not get into that.

I watched the first 2 episodes of the show. And it was hard to ignore how this show was trying to force feed or normalize some aspects into the audience minds in name of comedy.

Off the bat, i think Ratna Shah's character is deeply problematic. A drunk matriarch who ogles at semi naked bodies of young men on tv is what the show tries to pass off as humor, in a family show?? Do people at that age/stage of their lives still have such desires? Maybe a few, but most people I guess will be wiser.

The scene where she threats to commit suicide and the family appears indifferent again did not work for me. It was already done before and much better way in khichdi.

Then she abuses her mother in law in front of the family, when she finds that the jewellery handed to her was not real...did not make any sense.

The abusive maid saying gaand casually is a big no in a family show... What were the makers thinking??

And again, i am no one to comment on what a lady should wear. But a family show where the mother wears deep neck dress is something i am not ready to accept. Not easy to watch when sitting with kids...

These are few examples of the kind of family show the makers want indian family to see.

Overall, a difficult show to watch for an average Indian family with kids. I would any day prefer watching a re.run of khichdi or Sarabhai over this trash.

A dysfunctionally functional family!
khushali-j24 March 2023
As we have come to expect from Hats Off Productions, Happy Family too has a family full of quirky but real characters. Hemlata's savage wit reminded me so much of my grandmom! Ramesh being baffled by his own children and the world at large, is utterly adorable. Mansukh's chill nature and how he handles all the crises thrown his way smoothly and with good humour makes him such an ideal granddad.

The family is hilarious and the actors' chemistry truly make them feel like a real family. It's great to see such easy and casual relationships between grandparents and grandchildren, and between parents and children, which is something I always felt is missing from most Indian shows.

Kanakvalli and Diana so far stood out to me among the supporting cast.

It is funny and sweet and heartwarming and thought provoking in turns.

A realistic approach to a happy family
hansa-mansukhani7725 March 2023
After watching the first 4 episodes of happy family, couldn't wait for more of the laugh riot. Loved every character as they are so relatable, even the generation gap is portrayed so beautifully, Ratna Pathak is a powerhouse of talent...and Atul Kulkarni stole my heart... can't wait for more... found the 7th n 8th episodes more practical and progressive rather than humourous....a well received and well crafted shot in the arm towards a realistic society...great work Aatish.

The joint family culture is revived so beautifully thru this series, with 4 generations living amicably under one roof and the emotional upheaval when the life of one impacts all...truly a delightful watch.

Rubbish
aruniyer26 March 2023
Expected it to become the modern family of India... unfortunately the show lacks a sense of humour. Absolute waste of time.

Might as well watch modern family in Hindi. Just goes to show what some of India's experienced actors such as Ratna patak will do for money ....

It's not funny, doesn't have a good storyline and it is too chaotic to be a tv show. I seriously doubt if Amazon prime is going to make any money from this show. I expect better quality from Prime. Anyway, my suggestion is to strictly avoid the show and watch something else. Even staring at an empty wall is better than watching this show.

Fantastic series with spot on punch lines
wzxnykr16 March 2023
I don't know about others but I don't care if this is a knock off of Sara bhai or any other show. If the show makes me laugh I am all for it. The content and dialogues are very different, the comic timing is spot on and the characters are fabulous. JD and team does and amazing job every time making each character unique in some way and this series is no different. The first 4 episodes I watched and had my jaw hurting just laughing so much. I can't wait for the other 6 episodes to come out. Ratna pathak does a fantastic job as always and takes the cherry on the cake. I would highly highly recommend it to all.

Waste of time with overacting
coldcoffeespace11 March 2023
This is really a boring series. I haven't laughed anywhere. I was finding the points where I can smile but i failed. I was just watching.

I don't know why these directors shows that Gujrati families are a group of mad people and they eat too much. No. Its not true.

In very first episode you will see a baseless arguments, vulgar words (which gujrati families never use), whole episode they spent in one discussion. No story point. In first episode, they failed to provide a storyline where I can prepare myself to watch 2nd episode. I'm not gonna watch it. I don't know why & how it got 9/10 rating.

Hats Off never lets you down!
ShowStreamer0724 March 2023
I recently came across Happy Family on Prime Video and even before starting the show, expectations were really high, considering the kind of shows they have made in the past.

And they did not let me down one bit. After a long time came across a show that left me laughing out loud from start to finish. The characters were relatable, the writing was witty, and the humor was both clever and silly, making it just perfect. The cast delivered strong performances, bringing their characters to life in a way that made me feel like I was part of their world.

I would highly recommend this show to anyone looking for a good laugh and an entertaining escape from reality. It's a MUST MUST watch!

Boring show
vailayaroshan20 March 2023
Jokes are flat. Over the top acting. With all due respect to all the actors, u guys hv done a great job. Its d writing and storyline dats completely off the track. Got super bored in 1st episode itself.

I was so excited to watch atul kulkarni, raj babba and ratna pathak together in a show but dis storyline and jokes doesnt do any justice to ur acting skills. Its extremely boring.

Makes and the producers of the show shud hav created a masterprice wid such actors but every family show cannot be like sarabhai vs sarabhai (part 1) coz part 2 of the show was also very very extremely boring. Hope to c all the actors in some other wonderful project.

Progressive and fun watch
Teresaferns24 March 2023
I'd say go for it. I'm a fair critique of all of Hatsoff works and I would say happy family is a joyride with interesting twists. Highly recommended. The character graphs are engaging and the inter personal interactions are hilarious. In fact some scenes are just laugh out loud. The story gets more and more interesting as the episodes keep coming. Highly watchable and entertaining. Ratna pathak shah raj Babbar Atul Kulkarni Ayesha jhulka and the young brigade make it a compulsive viewing show. In times where dark drama is ruling the roost, this show is a differentiator. More power to the makers

But two more episodes awaited so final verdict is obvious only next week.

A Family which will make your Family a Happy Family
kishanmajithia-6161631 March 2023
Watching this show helped me laugh for most of the times and when i was not laughing, I smiling watching the different shades of the Dholakias.

Wondering what you happen next was constantly on my mind and I really salute the leading lady of the show Ratna Pathak for nailing the role of Baa.

She plays the character so brilliantly that you can't ever undo the love you give out to her character.

A family entertainer you and your family should not avoid.

It is the perfect blend of humor and heart! This show had my family in stitches with its witty jokes and hilarious situations, but it also tugged at our heartstrings with its heartwarming family dynamics. The cast is top-notch, with each member bringing their unique comedic talent to the table. And the story? Refreshingly unique and full of surprises. We couldn't get enough and binge-watched the entire season in one sitting. Highly recommend!"

Not that happy
sameerlodaya11 March 2023
Sameer lodaya

The series is titled HAPPY FAMILY but for sure it will not make you happy

Firstly you cannot see this series with your family as there is much of foul language secondly there is no such major topic to bang on thirdly the expected humour was below expectations it's not that fresh like sarabhai which you see midnight and get really happy

Major mistake they made by only releasing 4 episodes whereas I think a comedy or a thriller should be released entirely season to season

Only the 4 th episode made me laugh rest first there were just too loud

Atul Kulkarni was marvellous and others were just ordinary.

Masterpiece 🙏
skiranjha25 March 2023
Without a doubt this is the only show on OTT where you can laugh with your Family, Once again another MASTERPIECE delivered by the makers of SARABHAI VS SARABHAI and KHICHDI, What a brilliant performance given by all the actors especially Ratna Pathak Shah, Atul Kulkarni and Raj Babbar ji , I have never seen Atul Kulkarni like this before, This must be challenging role for Atul Kulkarni,

Happy Family Conditions apply is the story of almost every household, You can relate characters from your personal life , Hemlata (Baa) is the character I relate mostly, Pallavi (Ayesha Jhulka) is the character my sister relates

Superb Series 🙏🙏

Light hearted and silly comedy . I loved it
chandrarachit26 March 2023
Do not expect lot of mind to be used . But the punches used are hilarious . I loved the acting and the humour . We need more of such light minded and super funny content . Ratna Pathak is fabulous. At times it gets slow - but the laughter it gives you after few intervals makes it worth it . Totally a recommend. Tried touching upon several subjects and storylines but overall the show is what you need after a tiring day and I really did binge watch coz the actors are superb and every single one did a phenomenal job . Kudos to the makers . Recommendation for next episodes please just refrain from dragging Suresh's medical jokes . Everything else fantabulous.

This was horrible!!
amolbshenoy12 March 2023
Please don't waste your precious time on this show. We could barely watch 2 episodes, it's that bad.

The jokes don't land and the acting is over the top. Only saving grace comes in the form of Ratna Pathak but even she can't salvage this mess.

It's disappointing when the team that gave us hits like Sarabhai vs Sarabhai and Khichadi comes up with this dud! Sarabhai vs Sarabhai is still relevant in this day and age whereas this show turned stale upon arrival. The show fails miserably in utilizing talented actors like Atul Kulkarni, Raj Babbar, Ratna Pathak, and others.

If you are looking for family entertainment or for that matter any sort of entertainment then this is not that place.

Very much under-rated Dysfunctional (Real) Family
jeet-1175 May 2023
Very well executed the concept of dysfunctional family with very good comic timing.

However I felt the show could have been @ Sarabhai vs Sarabhai level if the following points would have been addressed: 1. Intro of the family was very quick so it takes some time to get familiar with the characters. A narrator could have filled the gap though, Atul Kulkarni would have been a very good narrator.

2. Satish Shah would have been a better choice than Raj Babbar as he would bring better humor to the character 3. Ratna pathak character is my personal favorite but only once we get familiar with her humor. And once we do she is a real star.

4. At some places the script becomes unrealistic especially the "terrorist attack". The attack looked totally FAKE. I believe creators tried something funny in the attack too.
