In the ABC drama’s April 17 episode, titled “Lab Rats,” L.A. Fire Capt. Bobby Nash (Peter Krause) sacrifices his own life to save members of his crew. Bobby shares a final moment with his wife, LAPD Sgt. Athena Grant-Nash (Angela Bassett), before succumbing to a deadly virus he and his fellow firefighters had been trying to contain.

In a long statement about his departure from the show, Krause acknowledges that longtime viewers of the show may be “upset by this loss, and they have a right to be. It is a loss.” But he also defends the decision by co-creator and showrunner Tim Minear, who told The Hollywood Reporter that “It makes sense for his character to have a tragic sacrifice as a conclusion of his entire journey in the show.

Four Station 118 firefighters got trapped into a lab with a deadly virus on ABC’s 9-1-1. Three of them, Chimney, Hen and Ravi, had a brush with death but it was the fourth who didn’t come out alive: Captain Bobby Nash, played by series co-lead and executive producer Peter Krause.

Thursday night’s episode, “Lab Rats,” written by series executive producer Kristen Reidel, Molly Green and James Leffler and directed by Dawn Wilkinson, marked Krause’s final appearance as Bobby sacrificed himself to save his team.

“9-1-1” may have resolved its latest catastrophic emergency. But for the first time across eight seasons, the firefighters of the 118 returned home having lost one of their own.

Episode 15, titled “Lab Rats” followed the aftermath of most of the firefighters getting stuck in a lab containing a dangerous virus that had infected Chimney (Kenneth Choi). Athena (Angela Bassett) and Buck (Oliver Stark) led the charge from the outside to secure an antiviral dose that would help heal their friend, even if it meant going against both the FBI and the U.S. Military. Like most “9-1-1” adventures, the team succeeds in saving Chimney with the sole dose of the virus and freeing the team from the lab, until Capt. Bobby Nash (Peter Krause) locks himself back in and reveals he too was infected, but chose to sacrificed himself so Chimney would live.
