Life goes on after Bobby’s tragic death, and on ABC’s 9-1-1 season eight episode 17, things are back to their everyday normal/crazy level. Bobby’s death means the hunt for a new captain is on, and the teaser for episode 17 shows who Athena’s throwing her support behind. Episode 17, “Don’t Drink the Water,” will air on Thursday, May 8, 2025 at 8pm Et/Pt.
Speaking with TVInsider, showrunner Tim Minear confirmed the answer to who’s taking over will not be revealed during the remaining episodes of season eight. “I’m not solving that problem right away for the rest of this season. There is an interim captain there who is not going to be the captain going forward, but the last three episodes are not about who’s in Bobby’s chair,” stated Minear. “The last three episodes are about that chair is empty.”

We’re just here to check in on our 9-1-1 family out there, who are undoubtedly and understandably still reeling from the shocking loss of Peter Krause’s Bobby Nash. It’s been a few weeks, but it will take much longer than that before our wounds show any sign of healing. With just a few episodes left in the eighth season, audiences are on edge as we wait for the other shoe to drop thanks to the neverending paranoia that we now live in courtesy of the creative team. But, there’s one character who is safe from whatever may befall the 118 over the next weeks, as showrunner Tim Minear made it crystal clear that Angela Bassett’s Athena Grant is here to stay.

9-1-1 is still feeling the fallout of Bobby Nash's death, and not just in-universe. Fans have made their displeasure known about the tragic loss of Peter Krause's long-serving captain, whether by billboards or petitions to bring him back to the ABC procedural. The most noticeable effect it's had on the show, outside of how the 118 has grappled with the paradigm-shifting moment from Season 8, Episode 15, is in the reviews. A quick glance at IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes shows a steep decline from the typically high user ratings the fan-favorite series has enjoyed over the years, stemming from "Lab Rats" and now bleeding into the follow-up episode, "The Last Alarm." It shouldn't come as a shock, either, given that the controversial moment was just about the last thing anyone wanted from the drama.

9-1-1 viewers might be recovering from the show's biggest development since the series premiere after Bobby (Peter Krause) died during a rescue gone wrong. And while that was a tough pill to swallow, there is something good to come out of it. The death and the viral conversation it started on social media helped boost the episode's viewership, thus boosting the show's ratings, at least for the episode "Lab Rats." The episode was watched by 8.45 million total viewers across and a 1.74 key broadcast demo rating in seven days, according to TV tracker Nielsen. These numbers were tallied across Disney-owned platforms such as Hulu, ABC, Disney+, and more. The key demo rating from the episode marks a five-month high for the show, with the last episode in close contest having aired on November 7, 2024.

9-1-1's most recent episode "Lab Rats," left audiences shocked when it was revealed in the final moments of the 2-part contagion story that Bobby Nash knew he had also been inhaling the virus while the team raced to save Chimney. The loss is tragic for the 118, but even more so for Athena, who stood with him in his final moments. The scene was shot and scored with so much emotion behind it, and now we're wondering if the haunting message in the song could be a clue for how we'll see Athena mourn the loss in the series.

If you're friendly with a fan of the network television procedural "9-1-1," give them a little extra space this week. The series — created by Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Tim Minear — just slammed a couple of torpedoes into the hearts of its viewers by unexpectedly killing off Peter Krause's Lafd Captain Bobby Nash at the end of the season 8 episode "Lab Rats." Nash, along with his wife Athena Grant-Nash (Angela Bassett), has been the series' emotional ballast. He's the steadying influence who keeps the young bucks from faltering in their duty (as much as possible). Also, because it's Krause, a television favorite due to his memorable roles on "Six Feet Under," "Sports Night," and "Parenthood," the shock is particularly profound. How does the show, this hidebound to narrative convention (in a necessary way), go on without its dramatic security blanket?
This question will be addressed over the next two...

It’s going to take a lot of getting used to for audiences to clock into ABC on Thursday nights and not see Peter Krause’s Bobby Nash on 9-1-1. Last week, in the second part of a two-episode thriller, the beloved captain bid adieu to his co-workers, choosing to lay down his life in order to save the lives of countless others. The actor has been with the procedural since its very first season, making him not only a staple to fans, but an integral part of the story.
As we now prepare to move forward without the character, some are finding it difficult to imagine the 9-1-1 universe without its steady heartbeat. Luckily, showrunner Tim Minear is here to tell viewers that they won’t need to say goodbye — at least not quite yet. To make things incredibly clear, Bobby is for sure, without a doubt,...

Kenneth Choi was not going to let showrunner Tim Minear kill off Captain Bobby Nash without a fight.
In a sitdown with Entertainment Weekly, Choi, who plays firefighter Howie “Chimney” Han in the ABC drama series, said he “fought” Minear over the in-show death of Bobby Nash (Peter Krause), the captain of Chimney’s Lafd station 118.
“It was uncontrollable sobbing,” Choi said. “I was laughing at myself saying, ‘I don’t know what is happening! I know this isn’t real! Why am I acting like this?’ But it was devastating to me.”
He continued, “Then I just kind of went into those stages of grief. Denial, mostly: This doesn’t make any sense. Why would you do that? You’re kind of killing off our father figure … And he explained creatively why he thought it was the right choice, and I fought him on it.

9-1-1 star Angela Bassett opens up about Peter Krause's tragic exit from the fan-favorite series.
Speaking to Deadline, Bassett, who portrays LAPD Sergeant Athena Grant-Nash on 9-1-1, the wife of Krause's Lafd Captain Bobby Nash, was asked if she had any idea that the recently released 15th episode of Season 8 would end in the latter's death. "Absolutely not. Not an inkling, not a word, not birdies, nothing," Bassett responded. "This is near the end of the season. Sometimes near the end of the season, we’re in this race against time to get our scripts, you’re really getting it in real time. It’s like get it today, and we’re going to start filming it tomorrow."

9-1-1star Peter Krause opens up about leaving the hit series behind in tragic fashion.
Per Deadline, longtime 9-1-1 star Peter Krause has officially released a statement regarding his exit from the series following the most recent episode. "I would like to thank Dana Walden, Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Tim Minear for entrusting me with such a complex character over these nine years. It has been my honor to portray Captain Bobby Nash," Krause wrote. "I’ve heard that many fans are upset by this loss and they have a right to be. It is a loss."

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for 9-1-1 Season 8 Episode 15 “Lab Rats.”] Losing a beloved character on a TV show is tough. Losing Captain Bobby Nash on 9-1-1? Well, we’re still processing. The good news? We will see Peter Krause again in Season 8! While the ABC drama did kill off Bobby in the Thursday, April 17, episode, when his character was infected with a super strain of Cchf (Crimean–Congo hemorrhagic fever), showrunner Tim Minear told TV Insider that that episode was not his last appearance of Season 8. When we pointed out that dead characters can be brought back via flashbacks, dreams, and hallucinations, he agreed. “You’re going to see him before the end of the season. You’re going to see him in some of those ways that you have enumerated.” He stressed, however, “I don’t want to mislead anyone. He’s dead.” Killing off Bobby came down to a “very hard creative choice,” said ...

Spoiler Alert: The story includes details about Episode 815 of ABC’s 9-1-1, “Lab Rats.“
On a typical 9-1-1 episode, this would’ve been a centerpiece — a chase involving three helicopters around Downtown Los Angeles skyscrapers that ends with a landing on the field of the L.A. Coliseum.
But the April 17 episode of ABC’s firefighter drama, “Lab Rats,” was anything but typical, marking the exit of star and executive producer Peter Krause. So the impressive stunt was overshadowed by Station 118 Captain Bobby Nash (Krause) dying just minutes later at an underground lab where a fire had triggered the release of a deadly virus.
The aerial pursuit involved 118’s Buck (Oliver Stark) and his ex Tommy (Lou Ferrigno Jr.) leading two military choppers on a decoy mission while Athena (Angela Bassett) rushed to deliver a vial of anti-viral to Bobby’s team, one of whom, Chimney (Kenneth Choi), had gotten infected.

In a series known for pulling no emotional punches, 9-1-1 just delivered its most devastating twist yet. After eight seasons as the stalwart Captain Robert “Bobby” Nash, 9-1-1 co-lead and executive producer Peter Krause has officially exited the hit drama following his character’s heroic death in the April 17 episode, “Lab Rats.”
The episode marked the end of a two-part arc centered on a deadly virus outbreak in an underground lab. In classic Bobby fashion, the firefighter saved his team one by one — performing emergency surgery on Hen (Aisha Hinds), delivering oxygen to Ravi (Anirudh Pisharody), and stabilizing an infected Chimney (Kenneth Choi) long enough for Athena (Angela Bassett) to retrieve a single dose of antidote. Only after everyone was safe did Bobby reveal that he, too, had been infected — and had kept it quiet so Chimney,...

Peter Krause’s fire Captain Bobby Nash has been through a lot in eight seasons on “9-1-1,” including a near-fatal heart attack, being shot and almost drowning on a capsized cruise ship and somehow survived. Until this week, when he sacrificed himself to save a member of his team and died by the end of Episode 15.
The actor’s exit had not been announced ahead of time, making his character’s death that much harder on fans. Although a trailer scene in which Buck (Oliver Stark) lets out an anguished scream sparked speculation that only losing his father figure Bobby would affect him that deeply.
This also marks the first major death on “9-1-1” in eight seasons, changing the stakes for the hit TV franchise moving forward.

[This story contains Major spoilers for the April 17 episode of 911, ‘Lab Rats.’]
For the first time in eight seasons, 911 has killed off a member of its core cast.
In the ABC drama’s April 17 episode, titled “Lab Rats,” L.A. Fire Capt. Bobby Nash (Peter Krause) sacrifices his own life to save members of his crew. Bobby shares a final moment with his wife, LAPD Sgt. Athena Grant-Nash (Angela Bassett), before succumbing to a deadly virus he and his fellow firefighters had been trying to contain.
In a long statement about his departure from the show, Krause acknowledges that longtime viewers of the show may be “upset by this loss, and they have a right to be. It is a loss.” But he also defends the decision by co-creator and showrunner Tim Minear, who told The Hollywood Reporter that “It makes sense for his character to have a tragic sacrifice as a conclusion of his entire journey in the show.

“9-1-1” may have resolved its latest catastrophic emergency. But for the first time across eight seasons, the firefighters of the 118 returned home having lost one of their own.
Episode 15, titled “Lab Rats” followed the aftermath of most of the firefighters getting stuck in a lab containing a dangerous virus that had infected Chimney (Kenneth Choi). Athena (Angela Bassett) and Buck (Oliver Stark) led the charge from the outside to secure an antiviral dose that would help heal their friend, even if it meant going against both the FBI and the U.S. Military. Like most “9-1-1” adventures, the team succeeds in saving Chimney with the sole dose of the virus and freeing the team from the lab, until Capt. Bobby Nash (Peter Krause) locks himself back in and reveals he too was infected, but chose to sacrificed himself so Chimney would live.

The second part of 9-1-1's two-part contagion arc concludes tonight with Episode 15, "Lab Rats." Several members of the 118 are still stuck in the lab from hell, and time is running out quickly. "Athena (Angela Bassett) and Buck (Oliver Stark) are in a race against time to rescue the rest of the 118 following the fire in the biolab," reads the episode's official logline. The situation births an unlikely team-up as Athena and Buck work together to save the people they love. Under normal circumstances, a team-up between Athena and Buck would be a recipe for disaster (at least for Athena), but they are of a singular mind here. A sneak peek of the episode (via Entertainment Weekly) previews this duo as they try to circumnavigate some restrictions that the army has put up, restrictions that could see Chimney's (Kenneth Choi) life sacrificed.

Over its eight-season run, audiences have seen some pretty gnarly and nail-biting episodes of 9-1-1. The ABC series is constantly keeping viewers on the edge of their seats, but what else would one expect from a production that kicked off its pilot episode with a story about a young mother needing assistance in getting her newborn baby out of a toilet’s plumbing? And those are just the one-off episodes. This season, the series has crossed over into lengthier territory, with a two-parter following Maddie (Jennifer Love Hewitt) after she was kidnapped by a serial killer. But tonight, the series put it all on the line with the episode titled “Sick Day”. We knew it was going to be a brutal one after the teasers rolled out, pointing to the contagion aspect, but next week’s “Lab Rats” promises to be the most gripping 9-1-1 episode to date.
