Florence Pugh is back in Marvel movie mode and shared to Instagram a first look set video from the Atlanta studio where “Thunderbolts” is now in production. The tentpole will mark Pugh’s latest appearance as the assassin Yelena Belova, a role she debuted as in “Black Widow” and reprised on the Disney+ series “Hawkeye.” The set video includes a first look at one of Yelena’s combat-ready suits in the film. Pugh is also sporting some blue eyeliner.
“Hey guys, how are you doing? I know I’ve dropped off for a little bit, but that’s partially because I was whisked off to Atlanta to shoot a movie that I’m not really supposed to talk about,” Pugh told her followers in the video. “But I can show you things, sneakily, as long as you don’t tell anyone…I can show you a sneak peek of the set.

Austin, TX – One thing that SXSW attracts are movie stars. With the big premieres headquartered at the famous art deco Paramount Theatre in Austin, audiences were treated to appearances by the legendary Susan Sarandon (“Gutter”), a reunited Cheech & Chong, and for the creme de la creme we were in the “Cage.” The great Nicolas Cage appeared on behalf of “Arcadian.”

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has seemingly found its new Sentry. Though it hasn't been officially confirmed by the folks at Marvel Studios, it has been reported widely that the character will appear in the upcoming "Thunderbolts" movie that is set to conclude Phase 5 of the MCU. Recently, Steven Yeun announced his departure from the film, which left the production with a pretty big problem to solve.
According to Deadline, Lewis Pullman is the man who has been tasked with solving that problem. The 30-year-old actor, best known for his work in movies like "Top Gun: Maverick" and "The Strangers: Prey at Night," is now poised to join his biggest franchise yet. Jake Schreier is directing "Thunderbolts," which is expected to begin filming in the coming months. While plot details have yet to be revealed, the Thunderbolts are not unlike DC's Suicide Squad, in that it's historically a team of villains...

It was first reported in February of 2023 that "Nope," "The Walking Dead" star Steven Yeun was finally joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe in what was described as a "significant mystery role" in "Thunderbolts." Months later it was confirmed that Yeun was going to play Robert Reynolds/The Sentry, a complicated super-figure who gains his powers from the sun and waffles between hero and villain status. The Sentry was the latest antihero figure to join the MCU, and with Yeun's star getting hotter after the explosive success of the Netflix series "Beef," his turn in Marvel's sandbox was one of the most anticipated roles of Phase Six. Unfortunately, at the start of 2024, mumblings started circulating that Yeun was exiting the project. And as was confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter on January 2, the rumors are true.
Important to note that while Yeun's involvement was never outright confirmed by Marvel, it was never denied,...

The miracle of friendship rather than the image of electric sheep is what occupies the subconscious of the charming android gleefully strolling through “Robot Dreams,” Spanish director Pablo Berger’s first animated venture. Fashioned into moving form from the graphic novel by Sara Varon, this hand-drawn buddy dramedy preserves both the cartoon strip aesthetic and lack of dialogue of the source material for a delightfully bittersweet animated wonder that embodies the medium’s most purely cinematic qualities. Now the fierce battle for the title of the best animated film of the year has a new strong contender.

Exclusive: Fiona Shaw (Andor), Katherine Waterston (Inherent Vice) and Chaske Spencer (The English) have entered production in NYC on Park Avenue, a new indie drama from Sundance alum Gaby Dellal (On a Clear Day), who directs from her script written with Tina Alexis Allen.
A production of Rimsky Productions and Washington Square Films, Park Avenue follows a mother and daughter who, over a fraught six weeks, reveal secrets, unravel lies and ultimately lay bare the ties that bind. Paralyzed by her life wrangling cattle in Alberta, Canada, Charlotte (Waterston) jumps into her Ford Bronco, flees her over-controlling husband, and lands back in her childhood Park Avenue apartment where she takes refuge with her mother Kit (Shaw). Rediscovering the boy she loved, now her grown doorman Anders (Spencer), and the life she left at 18, the mother and daughter explore shared history, unshared truths and find a way to face both love and loss.

During Marvel Studios' presentation at this year's D23 Expo, Kevin Feige and co. showed plenty of exciting footage and made some major announcements. One of the biggest revelations from the panel was the official line up for the team featured in "Thunderbolts."
The Phase Five finale, written by "Black Widow" scribe Eric Pearson and directed by "Robot & Frank" filmmaker Jake Schreier, is being called Marvel's answer to "The Suicide Squad." Like DC's reluctant team of villains, the Thunderbolts are also a collection of rogues dabbling in super heroics. However, they started as a front for the Masters of Evil to pose as heroes during a time when the Avengers were presumed dead. Eventually, rather than real villains, the team was made up of reformed evil-doers and other figures looking for redemption. And that seems to be the version we're going to see in the MCU.

Marvel has seemingly been slowly sowing the seeds of an anti-heroes film—much of that planted in “The Falcon And The Winter Solider”— and they’ve wasted no time bringing that to fruition. On the horizon is a “Thunderbolts” movie that will be helmed by Jake Schreier (“Robot & Frank”) with a prime summer release date on July 26, 2024. Based on a anti-heroes/bad guys team from the comics, the expectation is we’ll see a mix of heroes and villains thrown together into a new group that has some sort of U.S.

Veteran actor Frank Langella has been fired from Mike Flanagan’s “The Fall of the House of Usher” following a Netflix investigation that found Langella acted inappropriately on set, a source close to the production confirmed to TheWrap on Wednesday evening.
Netflix had no comment on the situation and a rep for Flanagan did not immediately respond to TheWrap’s request for comment.
TMZ reported on Tuesday that Netflix was looking into allegations that the 84-year-old had been accused of sexual harassment, including making inappropriate comments to a female co-star on the set of the limited series.
Langella was halfway through his portrayal of mad patriarch Roderick Usher. According to Deadline, the part will be recast. The role of the decadent aristocrat was most famously played by Vincent Price in Roger Corman’s 1960 horror film.

Though Marvel has decided to consolidate all of its cinematic universe offerings onto Disney+, some outliers still live on for other streaming services. In May 2021, Hulu is set to premiere the latest non-canon Marvel series.
The animated comedy Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K. is set to premiere on May 21 and stars Patton Oswalt as the titular Marvel villain. Oswalt’s Modok is every bit the devious floating head that he’s depicted as in the comics. He’s also your every day family man and the show will take on the format of a workplace sitcom. Sounds kinda fun! It’s no wonder that M.O.D.O.K. is the last Hulu Marvel show standing.
In non-Marvel offerings this month, Shrill will debut its third and final season on May 7. This comedy based on Lindy West’s memoir and starring SNL‘s Aidy Bryant has been a consistently bright presence on the streaming scene since...

After that comes Solos. This intriguing anthology has one hell of a cast including Anthony Mackie, Dan Stevens, Anne Hathaway, Morgan Freeman, Helen Mirren, Constance Wu, and more. There’s nary a drop of blood, but a squirm factor of 10 to much of “The Clovehitch Killer.” This first theatrical feature for director Duncan Skiles, working from a strong screenplay by his past collaborator Christopher Ford, treads familiar ground in eking suspense from the viewpoint of a child who realizes a parent may have a sinister secret life. But this atypical serial-killer thriller distinguishes itself in resisting thrills — let alone any actual violence — till well past its halfway point, instead maximizing the quiet discomfort in a son’s rising suspicion that his outwardly Dagwood-type dad could be a notorious murderer. IFC Midnight plans simultaneous limited-theatrical and digital-formats release of the La Film Festival-premiered film on Nov. 18.

Frank Langella, Susan Sarandon, Liv Tyler and James Marsden take a turn for the futuristic in director Jake Schreier's "Robot & Frank." The film, which recently claimed the Alfred P. This rejection of modernization holds particularly true when Frank's children deliver a robot programmed to look after him -- that is, until Frank teams up with the robot to pick up his thieving ways once...

Frank Langella is one of those actors who's been on the scene for decades, about four of them, but who only really came into household-name, internationally-recognized-level prominence recently. With 2008's Frost/Nixon, where he played the disgraced former American President, he earned his first Oscar nom and has continued to wow with his unforgettable performances. Today a trailer for off-beat futuristic buddy flick Robot and Frank dropped where Langella plays an aging jewel thief declared unfit for solo living by his kids (Liv Tyler, James Marsden) so they give him a robot butler to help with house work and loneliness, which is apparently a thing available to seniors in the near-future. Soon Frank figures out order-following Robot (voiced by Peter Sarsgaard) would make a great accomplice and enlists him to steal from the rich, bougie kids that he meets while courting local librarian Jennifer (Susan Sarandon).

Here's an intriguing little science-fiction dramedy that made a splash at Sundance earlier this year and is now headed for a theatrical release later this summer. First-time director Jake Schreier takes us into the not-to-distant future where robot companions can be used to look after the elderly. In this case, an ex-jewel thief named Frank (Frank Langella) is reluctantly given one of these robots by his children (James Marsden and Liv Tyler), and although at first he resists, eventually he grows to appreciate his new mechanical friend. The movie feels a bit like a cross between A.I. and Grumpy Old Men (if such a thing is possible) but from the trailer we learn that there is also a heist element to it as well. The robot itself is voiced by Peter Sarsgaard, which seems like an inspired choice, and design-wise he feels reminiscent of Marvin from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy...

Set in the near future, Frank, a retired cat burglar, has two grown kids who are concerned he can no longer live alone. They are tempted to place him in a nursing home until Frank's son chooses a different option: against the old man's wishes, he buys Frank a walking, talking humanoid robot programmed to improve his physical and mental health. Technology is meant to make our lives easier – from the brain-crushing minutiae of everyday work to world-changing scientific advancements, the possibilities of technology are endless. And, in Jake Schreier‘s Robot and Frank, those possibilities even include criminal activities. In the director’s first feature, Schreier imagines (thanks to Christopher D. Ford‘s original screenplay) a world where technology has advanced to the point that most homes now have their very own helper robot. The new robot tech is gradually taking over supposedly mindless jobs – inside and outside the home – including serving as nifty companions to the elderly. Salty old Frank (Frank Langella) isn’t too sold on the idea of robots (to put it mildly), so he’s quite put out when his kids (James Marsden and Liv Tyler) provide him with his own robo-helper. While Frank initially balks at the new addition to his home, the pair eventually form a bit of a friendship – which...

A few days ago the first poster for director Jake Schreier’s independent sci-fi buddy comedy “Robot and Frank” appeared. Today they’re back with the first trailer for the film. Frank (Frank Langella) is a retired cat burglar. In his twilight years his aim has shifted from boosting jewels to winning the heart of local librarian Jennifer (Susan Sarandon). At times sounds like an age versus youth kind of story, with Frank and Jennifer versus the younger crowd trying to replace them. But “Robot and Frank” is also the story of an unlikely friendship between two “people” on opposite ends of the spectrum, between Frank and a robot voiced by Peter Sarsgaard. Set in the near future, Frank (Frank Langella) a retired jewel thief gets a new lease on life when he is introduced to a surprising new companion. With the help of his new friend, he attempts to...

What happens in the near future when an elderly man is given a robot to help him around the house? He plans a heist of course. That's the high concept premise of "Robot & Frank" a sci-fi/romance/heist flick that warmed the hearts of many when it premiered at Sundance earlier this year.
Starring Frank Langella, James Marsden, Liv Tyler and Susan Sarandon, the film follows Frank (Langella), a retired cat burglar, who has two grown kids who are concerned he can no longer live alone. They are tempted to place him in a nursing home until Frank's son chooses a different option: against the old man's wishes, he buys Frank a walking, talking humanoid robot programmed to improve his physical and mental health. Frank decides to use his new robot pal to help plot a heist all while striking up a romance with a librarian (Sarandon).

A trailer has been released for the wonderfully cute and touching sci-fi indie film called Robot and Frank. The movie was directed by Jake Schreier, and has an amazing cast of actors that includes Frank Langella, Susan Sarandon, James Marsden, Liv Tyler, Peter Sarsgaard, Jeremy Sisto and Jeremy Strong.
The story takes place in the near future, and follows a character named Frank who is old, lives alone, and can't remember a lot of things. His son gets tired of coming up all of the time to check on his dad and taking care of him. So instead of putting him in an old folks home, he buys him a robot to take care of him. Frank doesn't like the idea of being taken care of by a robot at first, but it eventually grows on him, and the two form a bond. Frank teams up with the robot to...

In Robot and Frank, James Marsden considers putting father Frank Langella into a retirement home but comes up with a much niftier, more futuristic solution: He'll give his father a robot attendant that will keep him out of trouble. Most of us would know not to look a gift robot in the mouth (an orifice this bot doesn't even possess), but Langella is at first wary of the mechanical man, who's built like a Lego figurine and voiced by a gentle, fey Peter Sarsgaard. But then Langella decides that the best way to spice up his advanced age is to engineer a jewel heist, and soon enough, he's conscripted Robot to lend a shiny, white hand. Smart thinking, since necklace-stealing laws don't really apply to robots! (Didn't Linda Hamilton warn us about this?)...

New technology and advancing age go together like oil and water. At some point it all just becomes to much to take in, and no matter how user friendly the new tech may be it still may find itself beyond the reach of the elderly. For Frank Langella's character in the upcoming Robot and Frank, however, it isn't that much of a problem. In fact, he's even able to get his mechanical friend to help him pull off a multi-million dollar heist. A hit at this year's Sundance Film Festival and scheduled to arrive in limited theaters later this summer, Robot and Frank is a new sci-fi comedy from first time feature director Jake Schreier and now the first trailer for the movie has arrived online courtesy of Yahoo! Check it out below! The story, based on an original screenplay by Christopher D. Ford, is about a man named...

In terms of scheduling, marketing, financial profit, and general saturation, it always seemed odd that Warner Bros. would release two fantasy films two weeks apart from one another — even if they’re going for different crowds — and, finally, the studio has realized something was up. So, BoxOfficeMojo reports that Richard Lagravenese‘s Beautiful Creatures has been moved back two weeks, and will now open on February 25th, 2013, a slot once reserved for Sergey Bodrov‘s The Seventh Son. That film is undergoing a much bigger shift, having been scheduled to hit on October 18th, 2013.

I can't remember a time I went to the Seattle International Film Festival (Siff) press launch and looked over the list of films and saw so many I was interested in seeing. The claim to fame for over the years is to call it the largest and most-highly attended festival in the United States. This is a fact I've often taken issue with as I don't equate quantity with quality. Granted, there has been a large number of quality features to play the fest over the years, including Golden Space Needle (Best Film) winners such as Kiss of the Spider Woman (1985), My Life as a Dog (1987), Trainspotting (1996), Run Lola Run (1999), Whale Rider (2003) and even recent Best Director winner, Michel Hazanavicius's Oss 117: Nest of Spies in 2006. That said, looking over this year's crop of films I see a lot of films I will be doing my absolute best to see.

Susan Sarandon has been removed from a guest list for a White House event next week. Why? "I was denied security clearance and I don’t know why," Sarandon, 65, told the crowd attending a Q&A with herself and Michael Moore at the Tribeca Film Festival this past weekend. It gets better. As reported in The Independent, Sarandon added: "We know we are under surveillance. I’ve gotten my file twice under the Freedom of Information Act. I know my phone was tapped. If they’re not surveilling you then everyone else has cameras on their phones." If what Susan Sarandon says is accurate, that means Americans can rest assured their tax dollars are being wisely invested in the protection of their freedoms and their persons from clear and present danger. Sarandon has always espoused dangerous liberal causes, including gay rights and the Occupy Wall Street movement, and is a Unicef representative.

One week after the festival opening "Sassy Pants," the latest from Coley Sohn will close out the festivities. Screenplay by Christopher D. Ford
2012, USA
Director Jake Schreier’s Robot and Frank is a tale set sometime in the near future when robots will be at our beck and call for menial tasks or even to watch over the elderly as they become no longer fit to be on their own. Frank Langella (seasoned thespian and recently seen in The Box and Starting Out in the Evening) plays a man unable to let go of his glory years as a suave cat burglar. In and out of prison for most of his life, he was an absent father focused on short term gains from jewelry heists. Now his children (James Marsden, Liv Tyler) are grown and have become independent people with legitimate careers that carry them away from their estranged father. Deteriorating from old age, Frank’s isolating situation threatens to depress him into an early grave.

Last year, Volkswagen scored a huge hit with their very cute Darth Vader themed Super Bowl ad. And this year, they're going back to the "Star Wars" universe. With dogs. The car company has re-upped director Lance Acord (cinematographer on "Lost In Translation," "Where The Wild Things Are," "Adaptation," "Robot And Frank" among others) to helm the spot that you'll watch while eating your nachos this weekend. And this time around, the "Star Wars" link feels like a hamfisted afterthough. The bulk of the spot is actually more memorable, centering on a dog who decides to get into shape so he can chase cars. The sudden switch to the Cantina is a bit jarring, and ultimately not that funny. But whatever. It's a popular setting for expensive sports ads -- Adidas also visited the hangout for their World Cup spot in 2010 (to better effect). But either way, it's worth a watch.

Review of Robot and Frank at Sundance 2012. Frank Langella gives an amazing performance as a senior who bonds with his robot in Robot and Frank. A subtle sci-fi drama set in a world where robots are a natural part of our surroundings turns out to be one of the Sundance Film Festival’s most enjoyable surprises thanks in large part to a wonderful performance from veteran actor Frank Langella and impressive work by first-time feature director Jake Schreier and screenwriter Christopher D. Ford. Making its world debut in the Premieres section of Sundance Film Festival and acquired by Sony Pictures Worldwide and Samuel Goldwyn Films for distribution, Robot and Frank claims a sci-fi premise with its buddy tale of a man and his robot but its storytelling is humanistic and deeply personal. Its futuristic, fantasy elements are subtle, which helps the movie become one of the warmest sci-fi dramas in recent memory.

The Sundance Film Festival can be a significant launching pad for Oscar nominees. In the past few years, the best picture-nominated likes of “Precious,” “An Education,” “The Kids Are All Right” and “Winter’s Bone” all debuted at festival. But last year’s crop significantly fell short of the norm, despite what seemed like a lot of potential in films like “Take Shelter,” “Martha Marcy May Marlene” and “Like Crazy.”
Films from the 2011 fest received only one nomination in the major categories: “Margin Call” for best original screenplay. The norm is more like 10 or 12 nominations. So will 2012 continue this trend, or bring us back to the heydays of 2009 and 2010?
Unfortunately, it’s probably the former. Despite a lot of sales, this year’s Sundance slate looks like it might be even less Oscar-friendly than last year. Nothing screamed “Oscar” like “Precious,” “An Education” and “The Kids Are All Right” have in...
