"The Movie Has a Stolen Aesthetic": 'Inheritance' Director Explains How They Pulled Off a Global Spy Thriller on an iPhone
Image
No single genre defines filmmaker Neil Burger. From helming high-concept sci-fi mind-twisters like Limitless with Bradley Cooper and Robert DeNiro, to down-to-earth tearjerkers like The Upside with Bryan Cranston and Kevin Hart. His previous outing was The Marsh King’s Daughter, a vengeance thriller starring Daisy Ridley. Now he’s back with something on an entirely different plane– Inheritance, an international espionage action flick shot entirely from the hip.

Inheritance Director Neil Burger Talks the iPhone Spy Thriller (Interview)
Image
Filmmaker Neil Burger has had an illustrious career in Hollywood, working on everything from major franchises (Divergent) to more intimate dramedies (The Upside). However, his latest project, Inheritance, might be his most ambitious yet — a globe-trotting espionage thriller shot using iPhone technology.

We at FandomWire got the opportunity to speak with Neil Burger about his latest film, the film’s unique guerilla shooting style, and how it offers a fresh take on the espionage genre. Check out the full interview below!

Inheritance Neil Burger Interview

FandomWire: I think part of what makes Inheritance so fun is that it feels like a throwback to old-school espionage thrillers, but with a modern, almost Soderberghian style. How did you strike this balance between the familiar and the new?

Neil Burger: Well, I just wanted to set out to make the movie that I wanted to make. And I like those old films. There...

The Upside: The Movie vs. The True Story
Image
The Upside tells the charming true story of an unlikely friendship between a paralyzed billionaire and a recently paroled convict, but there were some changes the movie made. A 2017 American remake of the 2011 French film The Intouchables, The Upside is directed by Neil Burger stars Kevin Hart and Bryan Cranston. It may not have resonated with audiences in the same way as its predecessor, but the film remains an uplifting tale made all the more impactful because it is inspired by a true story.

This is the true story of quadriplegic millionaire Philippe Pozzo di Borgo and his former aide, Abdel Sellou. Neil Burger's 2017 remake makes some notable changes to the original French movie it is based on, including key aspects of Phillippe and Abdel's story. Looking at how the true story compares, some more unbelievable elements are based on fact. However, a few of the changes to The Upside...

“It was going to be different because…”: Not the $225,000 Per Episode Paycheck, Bryan Cranston Had a More Honorable Reason for Choosing Breaking Bad
Image
Bryan Cranston might as well be considered one of the most renowned big-named in the entertainment industry today especially when it comes to TV, and a major credit for that goes to Breaking Bad. While the saga itself had an exceptional plot that had viewers constantly at the edge of their seats, the actor’s perfect portrayal of Walter White further added to its star-studdedness.

But it wasn’t like he desperately needed this job, as pieces like Malcolm in the Middle and his appearance in The X-Files had already introduced his prime skills to audiences worldwide. Nor was the paycheck the reason he decided to join it. Rather, Cranston’s real intentions behind becoming a part of this series were much more honorable: He simply wanted a change of pace.

What Happened To The Cast Of Breaking Bad?
Image
It's strange to think that quite a few networks turned down "Breaking Bad" before it became the gargantuan hit series it did. The show largely defined what is meant by the term "the golden age of TV," providing pre-streaming audiences with a slickly-made premium drama that represents exactly the kind of high-quality entertainment that's often lacking in today's oversaturated media landscape.

What's more, "Breaking Bad" launched or catapulted the careers of several of its actors, most notably Bryan Cranston, who played Walter White/Heisenberg — a chemistry teacher who goes on a meth-dealing odyssey to become a drug kingpin. Cranston has become nothing short of a megastar in the wake of his seminal series, but it wasn't just the former "Malcolm in the Middle" star that received a post-"Breaking Bad" boost. Many of the actors involved with the series have seen their careers take off since the show went off...

The Best American Remakes of Foreign Films, from ‘The Magnificent Seven’ to ‘Some Like It Hot’
Image
Remakes get a bad rap, and frankly it’s sometimes deserved. At their worst, remakes can be pointless exercises in flattening an interesting film into something broader and less singular. Whether it’s a shot-for-shot remake like Gus Van Sant’s notorious “Psycho” redux or a misguided switch up like the execrable 2012 “Total Recall,” many remakes offer nothing of value.

These issues are often only magnified when an American director decides to put their own spin on a film that originated from outside the states. From overly sentimental mush like “Coda” or “The Upside” to dismal J-horror remakes like “Apartment 1303 3D” (remember that? No we didn’t either) to Will Ferrell starring in a broad comedic take on “Force Majeure” called “Downhill,” these international remakes often have nothing to offer compared to their originator except for putting the story in English. It brings to mind Bong Joon-ho’s famous...

Bryan Cranston Has the Guts to Admit One Harsh Truth About His Career After ‘Breaking Bad’ That Deeply Terrified ‘Mad Men’ Star Jon Hamm
Image
The multi-faceted Bryan Cranston has showcased his brilliance across multiple genres, from playing a comedic dad in a sitcom to a meth-maker in his all-time best, the Breaking Bad television series. Of course, embodying such versatile characters must not have been easy, especially when it comes to his iconic role as Walter White in the latter-mentioned series.

Bryan Cranston in Your Honor. | Credits: Showtime.

However, irrespective of how hard it may have been to bring to life such a troubled character, Cranston isn’t scared to admit the harsh truth that his role in the AMC series is the greatest role of his life. On the other hand, his fellow peer and Mad Men star Jon Hamm seems to think differently as he expressed fear at working on that level again after playing the notable Don Draper.

Bryan Cranston Unhesitantly Admits Walter White is “the Greatest Role of My Life...

“Kevin is..155 after the Rock finishes”: Kevin Hart’s Reaction to the Savage Joke Over the Dwayne Johnson Banter Says How Bad Nikki Glaser’s Roast Was
Image
Kevin Hart is one of the most badass comedians of all time, never ceasing to leave fans in hysterics with his stand-up comedies and roasts. But there have been very few people who have successfully roasted him back in the most iconic way. That was until recently when the 40-year-old comedian cum actress Nikki Glaser made her entry onto that list.

At The Greatest Roast Of All Time: Tom Brady, Glaser went all in after turning up to brutally grill Hart. While Kevin Hart‘s roasts have been incredibly enjoyable, Nikki Glaser recently surpassed all of those bars.

Mean Girls & Wonka Help The Box Office Break A 5-Year Record
Image
The domestic box office has broken a 2020s record with 17 movies grossing over $1 million during the second weekend in January. Mean Girls tops the box office with $28 million, followed by The Beekeeper with $16.7 million and Wonka with $8.4 million. The is the first time since 2019 that the second weekend in January has seen this many movies reach $1 million.

Mean Girls and Wonka, among other new movies, have helped the domestic box office beat a major record. Both movies are wide-release musicals, with Mean Girls adapting the 2018 Broadway musical of the same name, which in turn was adapted from the 2004 teen comedy hit. Wonka is an original musical that stars Timothée Chalamet as a young Willy Wonka in a story that is a prequel to the 1971 Roald Dahl adaptation Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

Per Deadline, while the Mean Girls release has taken No. 1 at the domestic box office, 16 other movies...

Here’s What Box Office Success Looks Like in 2024: More Movies Like ‘Mean Girls’
Image
Flashback: The #1 grossing film for January 2023 was “Avatar: The Way of Water.” In January 2022, it was “Spider-Man: No Way Home.” Both films were #1 on the last weekend of the month as well as the first.

Contrast that with “Wonka” (Warner Bros.), which is a clear success headed for a worldwide gross of over $500 million — but isn’t remotely in the same league. That explains why January is more than 20 percent below last year, but this month has a chance to succeed if it does something entirely different.

Yes, 2024 needs franchise titles and sequels to carry their weight; “Dune Part 2,” “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire,” and “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” all arrive in March. However, to rise above the year’s grim $8 billion projection for domestic gross (down 12 percent from 2023), a whole slew of standalone titles must thrive.

Enter the weekend of January 12. The four-day Martin Luther King, Jr. Day holiday traditionally boosts grosses,...

Lionsgate Film Chair Joe Drake Hands the Reins to Adam Fogelson
Image
Lionsgate’s Motion Picture Group Chair Joe Drake is exiting the studio. He’ll hand the reins to Adam Fogelson, who formerly lead both Universal Pictures and STX Motion Picture Group; Fogelson joined Lionsgate’s film group in 2022 as vice chair. This is now the third studio Fogelson will lead dating back to 2009.

Drake returned to Lionsgate in 2017 after starting Good Universe Pictures, which Lionsgate acquired from Drake. He most recently oversaw Lionsgate’s first $1 billion year at the global box office since 2019, thanks in large part to new “John Wick,” “Hunger Games,” and “Saw” films. Drake also oversaw the successes of “Knives Out,” “Jesus Revolution,” “Shotgun Wedding,” and more.

Fogelson and Drake will continue to work together over the next couple of months.

Drake’s exit comes as Lionsgate spins its studio business from Starz, which could lead to a potential sale of the studio. The company recently beefed...

Lionsgate Shake-Up: Adam Fogelson to Lead Film Group as Joe Drake Steps Away
Image
Lionsgate has tapped Adam Fogelson to succeed Joe Drake as chair of its movie division.

It’s understood Drake initiated the transition as he works with Fogelson — currently vice chair of the Motion Picture Group and overseeing the worldwide marketing and theatrical distribution — over the coming months to ensure a smooth succession.

Former STX Film chief Fogelson joined Lionsgate in September 2022 and reported to Drake, chair of the studio’s Motion Picture Group. His move to Lionsgate followed the Hollywood studio exploring a possible takeover of STX, a deal that didn’t come to pass.

Drake rejoined Lionsgate in 2017 after running Good Universe Pictures, the second company acquired by Lionsgate from Drake. He reentered a studio different from the one he left in 2012, as Lionsgate had moved beyond its hit Hunger Games and Twilight franchises to leverage a diversified portfolio of film and TV properties across multiple platforms, especially after acquiring Starz.

Drake rejoined Lionsgate in 2017 after having success with Good Universe Pictures, the second company acquired by Lionsgate from Drake. Other highlights during his current run of the Motion Picture Group include multi-award-winning Knives Out ($312M global B.O.), the last two John Wick movies ($766M+ global B.O.), and the latest installment in the Saw franchise ($111M global box). Frasier Getting His Own Sitcom Wasn't The Original Plan For Post-Cheers Kelsey Grammer
Image
When you think about it, "Frasier" is one of the most unlikely success stories in TV history. Running from 1993 to 2004, the show is one of the most beloved sitcoms of all time and has recently returned some 20 years after it went off-air for a revival series currently streaming on Paramount+.

But a lot had to happen in order for this impressive multi-decade run to pan out. After the show on which Frasier Crane first debuted, "Cheers," almost crashed and burned during its first season, it went on to become the most celebrated sitcom of the '80s and still enjoys a legacy as one of the finest TV shows ever. In season 3 of the series, we were introduced to Dr. Crane for the first time. Originally intended to be a character that appeared in a few episodes as a way to further the will-they-won't-they romance storyline between Ted Danson's...

‘Stranger Things’ Creators Shoot Down Season 5 Plot Twist Theory About Show’s Ending
Image
Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer, who are known as the Duffer Brothers, are shooting down a theory about the series finale.

After five seasons of fighting demons from The Upside-Down, the Netflix sci-fi series is coming to an end. The show’s fifth and final season was delayed due to the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes and fans have been speculating about how the series will conclude.

One theory that has been circling among the most die-hard fans of the show is that none of the events have ever existed. The theory relies on the main characters playing a big, long and convoluted game of Dungeons and Dragons.

“That is correct. That is the ending…. No,” Matt jokingly told Metro at the West End premiere of Stranger Things: The First Shadow about the fan theory.

Ross added, “That would be the equivalent of, ‘That’s all a dream.

Did Eleven Create The Upside Down? Stranger Things Star Gives Answer
Image
Millie Bobby Brown confirms that Eleven did not create the Upside Down, but rather opened a gateway to it, putting an end to the debate. The reveal aligns with the majority opinion, as evidenced by the Russians' prior knowledge of the Upside Down and their own attempts to reach it. While the question of Eleven's involvement in the Upside Down is settled, mysteries still remain for Stranger Things season 5, including the reason why the rift remains stuck in 1983 and the true identity of the main villain.

Stranger Things season 4 raised the debate of whether Eleven created the Upside Down and star Millie Bobby Brown has offered a definitive answer to the question. The fourth season of the hit Netflix series picked up six months after the events of season 3 as Eleven and the Byers were adjusting to life in California without their friends and family. Meanwhile, those still living in Hawkins,...

‘The Marsh King’s Daughter’ Delays Due To Taylor Swift Hurricane
Image
Exclusive: STX’s first movie under its Lionsgate pact, Neil Burger’s The Marsh King’s Daughter via Roadside Attractions will now go on Nov. 3 instead of Oct. 6.

Even though AMC’s Taylor Swift: Eras Concert opens on Oct. 13 and plays for four weekends, it’s clear Roadside doesn’t want to play this movie starring Star Wars actress Daisy Ridley into that storm.

Several films have cleared out of the way of the Taylor Swift Concert pic which has a shot at opening to $100M. Universal took Blumhouse/Morgan Creek’s The Exorcist: Believer earlier on Oct. 6 while other movies like the Meg Ryan return to rom com, What Happens Later, is going on Nov. 3, as well — the best by distributors is that the Swift storm will have calmed down by then.

Burger had success with STX with the dramedy, The Upside, which starred Bryan Cranston and Kevin Hart and...

The first film to be released under the new deal is “The Marsh King’s Daughter,” a thriller starring Daisy Ridley and directed by Neil Burger. Lionsgate will now jointly release the film with Roadside Attractions on October 6.

Latin Americans Bid for Further International Market Impact at LA Screenings
Image
Latin American companies have descended on the 60th LA Screenings, mindful of the ever-shifting panorama in content distribution and production.

The ongoing writers’ strike is viewed by some as a boon for international content. Take what Netflix co-ceo Ted Sarandos said at the company’s first quarter financials report presentation when the writers’ strike was looming: “If there’s a strike — and we want to work really hard to make sure we can find a fair and equitable deal so we can avoid one — but if there is one, we have a large base of upcoming shows and films from around the world.”

“The global market is finally realizing that Latin America, with almost 700 million inhabitants that speak the same language, is a territory that has a huge penetration in terms of Ott and – still – pay tv subscribers,” says Mexico City-based Manuel Marti, Fremantle’s head of scripted development, Latin America.

‘Late Bloomers’ Review: Karen Gillan Stumbles in Coming-of-Age Dramedy
Image
There are late bloomers and then there those who never bloom at all. Unfortunately for Lisa Steen’s feature debut “Late Bloomers,” The dramedy follows Louise (Karen Gillan), an aimless 28-year-old musician who breaks her hip while drunkenly stalking her ex. Through her injury, Louise befriends a group of elderly women at physical therapy and unwittingly becomes the caretaker to cranky Polish-speaking Antonina (Margaret Sophie Stein).

The parallels between Louise and Antonina are explained only in their shared shrugging off of polite social norms and blatant disregard for conventionality: namely, Louise is avoiding facing her ailing mother (Talia Balsam) who has Alzheimer’s and dodging calls from her scatter-brained father (Tim Nealon), while Antonina digs her heels in about moving into a retirement home. Nods to Antonina’s youth and her relationship with her own late daughter only sprout in the background of “Late Bloomers,” teasing what the film could have been.

‘Cocaine Bear’s Brooklynn Prince Signs With Sugar23
Image
Exclusive: Sugar23 has signed rising star Brooklynn Prince, on the heels of her new film Cocaine Bear‘s opening weekend triumph, with a current worldwide gross of $28M+ at the worldwide box office, against a production budget of roughly $30M.

The R-rated horror-comedy directed for Universal by Elizabeth Banks has broken out as one of the early success stories of 2023, affirming that original features, and those in the comedy arena, can certainly still perform in today’s marketplace. Based loosely on real events that took place in 1985, the film watches as a duffel bag’s worth of cocaine drops from a drug smuggler’s plane and winds up in a Georgia forest, becoming a favorite snack for a hulking black bear. An electric set of unfortunate souls, including Prince, Keri Russell and Christian Convery, are then subject to the animal’s murderous rampage.

‘Die Hart: The Movie’ (2023). Movie Review: Funny Movie with Kevin Hart Making Fun of Himself
Image
Die Hart: The Movie is a comedy movie directed by Eric Appel

Kevin Hart pokes fun at his supporting role in action movies and signs up for an action actor’s school with John Travolta as his instructor.

Funny… but only just

And if we were worse people we’d say it’s almost close to a B-movie that doesn’t deserve its stars.

With John Travolta, Nathalie Emmanuel, Josh Hartnett and Jean Reno.

Movie Review

A film that looks promising but disappoints you very quickly.

It barely holds up for the first ten or fifteen minutes, when Hart is interviewed. Then, it becomes not much or even just nothing at all, an anecdotal film, video-club fodder in bygone times, one of those movies that no one had heard of and that were rented without thinking too much about it and from which little was expected anyway.

Other than someone learning what Chrome Keying is…...

The Upside is getting a sequel despite receiving casting backlash. The film – which is a remake of the 2011 French film The Intouchables based on the real-life figures Abdel Sallou and Philippe Pozzo di Borgo – was released in theaters in January 2019 after a 2017 premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. The film starred Bryan Cranston as Philip Lacasse, a rich man with quadriplegia who strikes up an unlikely friendship with Kevin Hart's character Dell Scott, a young father who needs a job to maintain his parole and is hired to be his caretaker.

Per Variety, Cranston sat down for an interview with Real Time host Bill Maher for his podcast Club Random on the episode dated January 30. The excerpts they were able to share from the interview reveal that Cranston is aware he got criticized for his role in the film, though he listed other able-bodied actors who were lauded for playing disabled characters,...
