"Pulling Strings" takes a bit of a hit by being the third Latin single-dad comedy to roll into American theaters in a month. And though it is funnier and out-charms "Tio Papi," it lacks the whimsy, magical realism and kid-friendly sentiment of the sleeper hit "Instructions Not Included."
But this tale of a mariachi singer denied a visa, who then tries to trick and charm the American embassy staffer who turned him down, is a winning vehicle for singer / actor Jaime Camil.
Alejandro (Camil) is raising his 9-year-old daughter alone, and fears what the Catholic school nuns are telling him is true -- that he's botching the job. She needs to go spend time with her grandparents. In Arizona.
Having no property, permanent address or passport, he gets little more than the no-eye-contact dismissal from U.S. Embassy functionary Rachel (Laura Ramsey of "No One Lives" and "Kill the Irishman...

CineMovie is giving away movie tickets to see the family comedy Tio Papi, a new independent film screening in Pico Rivera, CA on Thursday, September 5th.
It was a bachelor's life for hard-working and fun-loving Ray Ray Dominguez (Joey Dedio) who dreams of leaving the barrio for a more carefree existence in Miami. That's until one day when everything changed and he became a reluctant Tio Papi to his sister¹s six children ages six to 16.
Now, in charge of raising this energetic (and expensive) clan, Ray Ray must make important decisions on what life really is all about. Combining heart-warming drama with light-hearted comedy, Tio Papi, directed by Fro Rojas from the original screenplay by Joey Dedio and Brian Herskowitz, is an upbeat story of life's unexpected surprises and ultimately what matters the most the love of family.

Maudlin and wholesome to a fault, "Tio Papi" is a family dramedy about a single guy who gives up his dream life when his sister dies and leaves him with six kids that he doesn't know how to raise.
It stumbles out of the gate by not showing anything of a "dream" life that New Yorker Ray Ray Dominguez (Joey Dedio) is giving up. He lives alone and saves his cash, yet he's behind on his rent. Way behind.
The film finds zero laughs in the worn-out situation of a bachelor -- Puerto Rican, in this case -- who suddenly has to cope with kids. A strained romance with a teacher (Elizabeth Rodriguez) he split from because he didn't want to be "tied down" with kids doesn't work.
The financial struggle of being responsible for six fresh mouths to feed is skimmed over. And the third act is a litany...

Remember Kelly McGillis from Top Gun and Witness? The 80s star can be seen in an independent film Tio Papi as a social worker placing a family of six with their uncle after their parent's death. Take a look at the film and movie poster.
Don't be surprised if you don't recognize Kelly McGillis, but she's the white-haired character. In a case of "Where are they now," McGillis disappeared from Hollywood but returned to star in smaller fare after her success in the 80s co-starring with Tom Cruise, Harrison Ford and Jodie Foster. She's starring alongside newcomers in this independently produced film.
