TelevisaUnivision Bets on Microdramas and Music in Upfront Push
Image
TelevisaUnivision plans to lean into new formats and areas of cultural conversation, as the Spanish-language media giant seeks to stand out in a crowded upfront marketplace.

That will include the addition of 24/7 reality formats, where viewers can watch the goings-on at any time in addition to regular episodes, a slew of music programming (and an entirely new live music festival), and a substantial investment in “microdramas,” which will seek to bring the telenovela format to mobile devices.

“Where all other businesses are trying to be everything to everyone, we are laser focused, and always have been,” days Donna Speciale, TelevisaUnivision’s head of ad sales, in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “I think we have a uniqueness to us, you know, we are a cultural force. We’re built on trust over 70 years. We have this authenticity and this deep connection with our audience, we are the heart of the Hispanic connection,...

‘Snow White’ Cast and Character Guide: Who’s Who in Disney’s Live-Action Remake?
Image
Disney’s live-action “Snow White” is here, taking the 1937 animated film into the real world, dwarves and all.

Although technically, in this version, they aren’t dwarves. As explained in the movie, they’re magical creatures that have lived in the woods for hundreds of years. That said, they still take on the names of the original seven dwarves.

And of course, there are some recognizable humans on screen as well as lending their voices to the merry bunch.

So, here are all the faces — and voices — you’ll need to know.

Rachel Zegler in “Snow White” (Credit: Disney) Snow White (Rachel Zegler)

Snow White is Disney’s very first princess, and she’s brought to life here by Rachel Zegler. She made her big screen debut in Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story” remake, and has since starred in movies like “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,...

How Ivan Cornejo Became Música Mexicana’s Heartbreak Kid
Image
Magical as it is, Disneyland at night can lead to sensory overload pretty quickly. A smiling Mickey grins out from a Ferris wheel that glows like a firework in the middle of the park, fluorescent lights blink at every corner, and tinny theme songs from every Disney classic you can think of blast constantly. You might make eye contact with any number of characters stationed here, there, everywhere — Pluto, Goofy, Jessie from Toy Story II, Anger from Inside Out. And tonight, in the middle of it all, amid the smiling...

Idiotka is an acquisition title out of the 2025 SXSW Film Festival, where it will premiere Wednesday.

“This project came through a mutual friend that I shared with our producing partner, Tess Cohen, a friend that I knew from high school. It’s very random, but awesome. It gripped me,” Mendes told Deadline of the film ahead of its premiere Wednesday. “I called my producing partner right away, Rachel Matthews, and I was like, we gotta do this. She’s like, ‘Babe, I’m with you. I just read the first two pages and I’m in.

Stephen King at an event for The Manchurian Candidate (2004)
The upcoming TV series It: Welcome to Derry, which will serve as a prequel to Warner Bros’ two-part adaptation of the classic Stephen King novel It (pick up a copy Here), was originally meant to be for the Max streaming service, but we recently learned that it will be airing on HBO as well. The show went into production in Port Hope, Ontario at the end of last year, aiming for a 2025 premiere, and wrapped in August after 237 shooting days. We’re still waiting to hear exactly when the nine episode first season is going to start airing – but casting director Rich Delia has already confirmed that the show’s kid characters are not safe… which makes sense, when you’re dealing with an antagonist that describes itself as “the eater of worlds, and of children.”

Mancuso will also write the script alongside Dan Lagana, from a story by Andy Muschietti. Mancuso and Lagana came to partner with Amazon here after collaborating on Música, the studio’s coming-of-age romantic comedy, starring Mancuso and Camila Mendes, which debuted on Prime Video in April. That film follows a young man (Mancuso), plagued by the music in his head, who has to come to terms with an uncertain future while balancing love, family and Brazilian culture in Newark, New Jersey. When música mexicana star Xavi started working on his debut album, he told Rolling Stone that he had two goals in mind: He said it was “going to be straight corridos, respecting our style,” and that it was his mission to make the album “the best.” If you ask Xavi now, he’ll tell you he achieved both goals.

Camila Mendes on Why We Need More Latine Representation in Rom-Coms
Image
A simple Google search of "the best rom-coms of all time" will take you down a nostalgic hole of '90s and early-'00s movies like "10 Things I Hate About You," "While You Were Sleeping," and "P.S. I Love You." These classics, among many others, have shaped how we view love on screen. But through these films, we've learned what love looks like through white protagonists; many Bipoc communities have failed to see themselves reflected. While we saw Latine actresses like Salma Hayek, Jennifer Lopez, and Christina Milian make their mark early on in romantic comedy movies, for years the entertainment industry has undervalued and underrepresented Latine communities on screen and behind the camera.

Camila Mendes is shifting that narrative. You likely recognize her from rom-coms like "Palm Springs," "The Perfect Date," and "The New Romantic" - and she's starring in and serving as an an executive producer for the new rom-com film "Música,...

Musica 2024 Ending Explained
Image
Spoiler alert: This article contains spoilers from Música.

Rudy chooses Isabella over Haley in Música's ending. Rudy focuses on his puppet show instead of desperately trying to get back together with Isabella after she rejects him, and he turns his dream into reality. Música is more than a romantic comedy, as it focuses on Rudy's individual growth and uncertainty about the future.

Música is yet another exciting addition to the romantic comedy genre in the 2020s, but the movie is much more than its central love story, as proven by its ending. The 2024 film, directed by Rudy Mancuso (in his feature film directorial debut) and co-written by Mancuso and Dan Lagana, revolves around a Brazilian American man who is about to graduate college when his girlfriend (Francesca Reale as Haley) of four years dumps him. However, things get complicated when Rudy creates a new connection with Isabella, played by Camila Mendes,...

Camila Mendes’ New Rom-Com With 95% On Rotten Tomatoes Continues An Incredible 4-Year Streak
Image
Música's 95% Rotten Tomatoes score proves Camila Mendes' rom-com prowess since Palm Springs. Mendes' film career sparkles with hit movies, making her a standout rom-com lead actress. Música's unique story, charismatic cast, and musical features create a must-see romantic comedy.

Prime Video's latest romantic comedy, Música, continues a Rotten Tomatoes hot streak for its leading actress, Camila Mendes. Mendes first broke out onto the scene as Veronica Lodge in Riverdale, the 2017 teen mystery drama series based on the characters of the Archie comics. The TV show was an illustrious professional start for Mendes, establishing an abundant following and enough positive critical reception to sustain itself and Mendes' lead role for seven seasons from 2017 to 2023; though, despite an incredible run on television, the actress has since set her sights on tailoring her career toward film.

Mendes' venture into film recently brought her to the cast of Música, in which she...

‘Música’ Review: Rudy Mancuso’s Music-Driven Rom-Com Shines for Its Whimsical Idiosyncrasies and Cultural Specificity
Image
Key to the ongoing conversations about Latino representation in the U.S. entertainment industry is the need for the diversification of stories, which in turn would breed valuable specificity. Rather than expecting one production to speak strongly to every single subset of the vast Latino community, projects should reflect the unique microcosms and experiences that speak to groups such as Cuban Americans in Florida, Mexican Americans in Los Angeles, or Dominican Americans in New York City.

Enter the multi-hyphenate Rudy Mancuso, whose charmingly inventive and loosely autobiographical feature directorial debut “Música” highlights the Brazilian American community of New Jersey’s Ironbound neighborhood. In addition to starring in the film as a fictionalized version of his younger self, the talented Mancuso — who started out making videos on the now-defunct app Vine before moving on to YouTube and live shows — co-wrote the screenplay with Dan Lagana and, fittingly, also created the integral music.

Amazon's Musica Cast & Character Guide
Image
"Música" delves into Rudy Mancuso's struggles with rhythmic synesthesia and immigrant identity through a talented cast. Mancuso's passion for music shines in his autobiographical movie, revealing a torturous yet inspiring journey. With a 95% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, "Música" effectively tells a true-ish story with heart and authenticity.

The somewhat autobiographical movie Música dives into the life experience of Rudy Mancuso, and its unique cast helps to make this difficult endeavor possible. As a musician, there's no question that Mancuso has a passion for music, but his 2024 movie reveals that this is something of a torturous experience. Between his struggle with rhythmic synesthesia and the pressures of being the child of an immigrant in the United States, the internet star and filmmaker has quite the story to tell—and his musical-ish movie Música was the perfect outlet to do so.

The Prime Video movie Música, released on April 4, 2024, features...

Música Review – The Biggest Surprise of the Year So Far
Image
Música releases on Prime Video on April 4th, 2024.

I don’t know if what I’m about to state next will provoke reactions of shock or total indifference, but Rudy Mancuso was completely unknown to me until I watched Música. I was entirely unfamiliar with his apparently famous work on Vine and YouTube. Personally, Camila Mendes (Do Revenge) was the main ‘attraction’ of this film and who made me sit in front of the television, such is her talent and natural charm, but curiosity peaked when I realized that Mancuso was not only going to act but also direct, write, produce, and compose the score for what’s ultimately a movie based on his life.

Música tells the story of Rudy (Mancuso), a young man who has synesthesia – a perceptual phenomenon where stimulation of one sense leads to involuntary experiences in other senses, such as hearing a sound that evokes...

Música Review: A Refreshing Brazilian-American Romantic Comedy
Image
Música brings a refreshing take on romantic comedies, anchored in Brazilian American culture and synesthesia. The film defies expectations with a creative portrayal of synesthesia, great chemistry, and cultural authenticity. Despite rushed pacing in the third act, Música is a classic rom-com with heart, soul, and unique representation.

Romantic comedies might be an iconic part of the 1990s and early 2000s, with many thinking back to the golden years of rom-coms, especially as they have recently fallen out of favor with moviegoers. Some movies in 2024 and late 2023 are looking to change that. Amazon Studio's Música is one of them. Anchored in the Brazilian American culture of New Jersey, where the film is set, and a rich visual experience reflecting what it's like to live with synesthesia, this is a refreshing take on the age-old classic world of romantic comedies.

The director, writer, and creator of Música is Rudy Mancuso, who...

‘Música’ Review: A Delightful, Subversive Musical Comedy That Makes Synesthesia Cinematic
Image
On the surface, “Música” feels like a very standard story about a talented guy who finds himself caught between two girls he likes, and — rather than be honest with them — starts dating both at the same time. Hilarity ensues. Thankfully, much like the fictional Rudy he plays here, the real Rudy Mancuso is more than meets the eye. His feature directorial debut is a smart and charming coming-of-age love story that is also a musical and such a good cinematic portrayal of synesthesia that it’ll make you forget all about the other, misbegotten attempts to thread the same needle (does anyone remember “August Rush”?).

We are in the era of social media movie directors, but the days of “Fred: The Movie” are thankfully gone. Between Bo Burnham’s “Eighth Grade,” and Danny and Michael Philippou’s “Talk to Me,” YouTube is starting to seem like a viable incubator for worthwhile film directors.

Upgraded Review | A Throwback to Romantic Comedy Comfort Movies
Image
Camila Mendes delivers a great performance in Upgraded, elevating the material. Upgraded is a cozy comfort watch for fans of traditional romantic comedies, with a strong supporting cast. While it hints at socially relevant topics, it never delivers on them, and the film can feel derivative at times and doesn't follow through on its potential.

Upgraded, not to be confused with Leigh Whannel's 2018 R-rated action movie Upgrade, is the latest entry from Prime Video as their major Valentine's Day weekend tie-in. Starting in 2021 with the release of The Map of Tiny Perfect Things, the streamer has released yearly romance movies as a viewing option for couples over the romantic holiday that in the past likely would have been mid-budget theatrical releases. These have yielded mixed results, from 2022's delightfully funny I Want You Back to the well-intentioned but tonally confused Somebody I Used to Know in 2023. Upgraded feels like...

Amazon's New Rom-Com Continues 1 Actor's Winning Rotten Tomatoes Streak
Image
Upgraded, a rom-com on Amazon Prime Video, is a twist on The Devil Wears Prada that's set in the art world. Camila Mendes delivers a charming and funny performance in Upgraded, adding to her streak of successful comedic roles. Mendes' previous comedy films, including Palm Springs and Do Revenge, have all received positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.

Upgraded, Amazon Prime Video's latest rom-com, continues one of its lead actors' winning Rotten Tomatoes streaks — and just in time for Valentine's Day. Helmed by actor-turned-director Carlson Young, Upgraded has been hailed as a twist on The Devil Wears Prada, a romantic drama classic about the diabolical world of fashion. While Upgraded trades fashion for the fine art world and a first-rate magazine for a world-renowned auction house, it still centers on a young woman who's pushed to the brink while trying to impress her brutal boss.

Instead of Meryl Streep's iconic Runway Magazine editor Miranda Priestly,...

With ‘Upgraded,’ Camila Mendes Is Here to Prove She’s Grown Up Since ‘Riverdale’: I ‘Just Want to Be Taken Seriously’
Image
For most of her career, Camila Mendes has been known as Veronica Lodge. She portrayed the rich, confident high schooler on The CW’s “Riverdale” for six years, appearing in 136 of the 137 episodes before the series wrapped up last year. And now, she’s ready to put that behind her in order to show the world what else she can do.

“I’m sure I will be typecast — I think people are gonna offer me roles based off things that they’ve already seen me do. So it only’s natural that’s what would happen,” she tells Variety.

Which is part of the reason Mendes is attracted to projects she can also produce, and she’s both the star and an executive producer of “Upgraded,” a new romantic comedy that dropped on Amazon Prime Video’s on Feb. 9. In it, Mendes plays Ana, a young art intern who meets...

More Latin Songs Reached Number One On Spotify Than Ever This Year
Image
The Latin music industry has seen massive growth over the last year. In 2022, revenue for these genres exceeded $1 billion for the first time, and it’s continued outpacing other parts of the industry. And Latin music has remained a force on streaming — so much that 2023 seems to be the biggest year for number one Latin hits on Spotify.

Eight songs made the number one spot on the platform’s global charts, the most in Spotify history. Of the 10 most-streamed artists globally, four were Latino. Bad Bunny occupied the highest spot at number two,...

The Grammys Still Don’t Know What to Do With Latin Music
Image
Last year at the Grammys, Bad Bunny’s LP Un Verano Sin Ti made history as the first Spanish-language project nominated for Album of the Year, and his song “Moscow Mule” got a nod under Best Pop Solo Performance. These all seemed to be signs that the Recording Academy was broadening its view of Latin music and art and considering it for major categories, rather than siloing it to genre-specific categories.

But sadly, it’s back to bad habits this year. No Latin artists appear in the Big Four, despite...

Eslabón Armado Helped Make Musica Mexicana History. What’s Next?

Few people have had a better year than Pedro Tovar. The 21-year-old singer is the voice behind Eslabón Armado, one of the biggest bands in the booming música Mexicana scene. This year, Eslabón Armado released Desvelado, a follow up to their 2022 emo sierreño opus, Nostalgia, which made history on the charts.

Desvelado features “Ella Baila Sola,” the track with Guadalajara-raised artist Peso Pluma that also made huge waves: “Ella Baila Sola” was crowned the song of the summer, its first few guitar chords followed by blaring horns reverberating across park barbecues in New York City,...
