Interesting throughout

This is an exciting series that has an onward momentum with quite a lot of story to keep things from repeating. Many other kdramas of the past were too long and stalled. But there is so much going on here that the series is quite interesting till the satisfying end. There story comes together. Lots of high powered villains to take down and it's all painstakingly explained so there is no confusion.

The romance isn't the main thing here. No love triangle and all that. The ending is neat. Could have had a bit more romance to finish things. The musical score though repetitive is quite suitable.

As City Hunter Lee Min Ho keeps the character likeable though his hair covers his face too much. Park Min Young is sweet as the bodyguard Kim Na Na and her charm isn't annoying. The supporting characters are quite good too. The tenacious but conflicted prosecutor Kim is convincingly played by Lee Joon Hyuk.

Worth watching.

A pretty decent Korean action melodrama.

I've been making the rounds here on IMDb offering up reviews of Korean TV shows over the last year or so (because they're sorely lacking), and tonight it's review time for City Hunter. This show aired in the summer of 2011, and it's not half bad.

SPOILERS AHEAD!

I see four other people have reviewed this series already (to some wildly ranging opinions). I watch these shows all the time, and have a pretty good handle on them, so perhaps I can be of some help in providing a more balanced review. Basically, this show is standard fare for the genre; it's neither ground breaking nor spectacular, but it is mostly watchable and worth checking out if you like this sort of thing. It's pretty decent overall.

Here's your story: It's late 1980's or early 1990's, and North and South Korean tensions are mounting. A group of hardened South Korean marines are tasked with infiltrating the North to kill a number of prominent military leaders at the behest of 5 South cabinet members and high ranking officials. During the raid, the 5 South leaders who masterminded the plan reverse course for political reasons, but it's too late to stop the mission. As a result, they must now eliminate the team they sent north without a trace, and they must do so at all costs in order to preserve national security and peace between the 2 nations.

The South Korean leaders appear to be successful in eliminating their own marines. One member of the team survives the onslaught however, thanks to his long time friend in the squad who saved his life. Obliged to fulfill the wishes of his dying friend, and fearing that his friend's entire family may also be killed, he absconds with his friend's newborn son and goes on the run. This surviving team member is upset (to say the least), and he's not a man to be trifled with. He disappears into the Golden Triangle where he raises his friend's son while he rises to power & wealth in the drug supply trade. All the while, he plots eventual revenge on the 5 leaders back in Korea who killed his comrades in the past, and, he plans on one day using his "adopted" son to help him accomplish this goal. As such, the adopted son is essentially groomed from birth to carry out this plan in the future.

Flash forward to 2010 or so. The son he raised is now fully grown and inserted back into Korea. He's rich, well educated, good looking, and armed with all the training he needs to ruthlessly take revenge on the people who caused the death of his father. The 5 men he must dispatch have since risen to great power and are now well entrenched politically and financially, and one of them is now the South Korean President. Undaunted, father and adopted son set about their task to eliminate these evildoers one by one.

Some problems arise though; the son is not the ruthlessly driven killer his adopted father is, and he starts to question and waiver on the task at hand over time. He also takes a liking to a pretty young girl along the way, who turns out to be an up and coming secret service agent in charge of protecting the president (i.e. the main target). Ahhhh!...this is a staple of KTV melodrama...everybody is somehow involved with somebody else, and all story lines & plot points intertwine & intersect with one another somehow. And every character is a rival to someone else; old against new, weak against powerful, good against evil, father against son, son against love interest, etc. How will this particular show play out these themes in the end?...Watch and see for yourself!

There's a god bit to like about this show. It's often quite entertaining and fairly interesting, but it does get bogged down a little bit during its run time. It would have benefited from trimming its 20 show format down to about 12-16 episodes or so, but, I've been over this same ground too many times with other similar shows I've watched & reviewed; it's just the nature of airing KTV dramas, and, you're just going to have to get used to it if you endeavor to watch them.

Bottom Line: I liked it for the most part, and it's certainly watchable. It is not deserving of its current lofty 8.4 rating, nor its two glowing 10 star ratings from the previous reviewers. But it's certainly not a 3 star rated pile of crap either. It's worth checking out if you have 20 hours to kill and are looking for a Korean style love story/melodrama fix with a decent enough amount of action & intrigue.

7 out of 10 stars!

Action-packed excitement!

Although this show might have started off slow and boring for me by the end I was gripping on to my seat in nerve-wracking anticipation. The action was authentic and the characters completely lovable. I would like to have seen more romance between the lead couple but their chemistry either way was evident. The plot had a few loose ends and I hated the ending which left me feeling unfulfilled, but I'll forgive the makers on the grounds that I loved the series as a whole. I would definitely recommend watching this to anyone who loves the good looking hero with a hidden identity trying to save the world and protect his lady love, etc etc.

An engaging, heart-pounding drama that takes you on a roller-coaster ride

I first heard about City Hunter well before it was to be aired. I had set it aside to watch, mainly because I'd recently become a fan of Lee Min Ho (main male lead) via his previous dramas. Unfortunately, it took me a whole year before I finally sat down and watched this truly amazing drama.

I was captured from the very first episode, where you witness the deaths of 20 Korean soldiers, betrayed by their own country. The musical score used to draw you into that whole scene is just...beautiful, and heart- breaking. It plays throughout the series, perfectly placed, perfectly timed.

I began to love each of the characters and watch them progress, some of them more than others. The relationship between Lee Yoon Sung and his father is one of the core aspects of the drama. I tell you now, if you have not seen this drama, go and watch it. You will not be disappointed. I felt that it got a solid ending that wrapped up all the loose ends in the plot, and even with the romance. It left me wanting more..in a good way XD I would totally go for a second season, if the original cast remained :p

From the astounding musical cores, the lovable characters, and engaging plot, I highly recommend this drama.

Absolutely brilliant!

My favorite K-Drama. It has everything: A revenge plot, slow burn romance, humor, an amazing OST, great action scenes and mind-blowing plot twists. Really great acting, as well and Lee Joon Hyuk is to die for. I've seen it twice now and both times I was laughing out loud, squealing, screaming (I'm not kidding, ask my neighbours) and crying. It's a wild ride, an absolute emotional rollercoaster and you get so attached to the characters. Also, Lee Minho and Lee Joon Hyuk's chemistry is amazing. Their relationship is the best among all the characters.

No Spoilers Here

Been selecting the past Korean Drama to watch from the old kungfu series to new modern era.Trying a few numbers actually from the old era till the new era to be specific More like something decent to watch.

Well I landed this one instead. Yokoosso well two thumbs up. The character for Kim Na Na is just fabulous and just fits the bill. Great mixture of romance and action in the drama it is definitely not typical Korean love story per say.

Most importantly it is a family safe to watch drama if of course one notion that you disregard the amount of fighting violence in a show .. than this show is a definite recommendation.

The best of Lee Min Ho

In term of the look and age of Lee, this drama shows the best of him. Young, smart and handsome. With tbe female lead, they also create chemistry. The storyline of the first half is intricated yet logical. Towards the end, unfortunately, the story become a bit loose. Or it will be a really classic action and romance drama.

Hm....

I'm more of a film person, and even if I saw a couple of great serials from South - Korea, this isn't one of them. There are just too many small technical and practical mistakes in it that it ruins the immersion for me.

Even though Korea is high-tech and all they don't seem to know how smartphones work in this serial. Sure, there are some other dramas that have the same issue, however, it's all the small issues like how fire arms work for example.

They are supposed to protect high-level people yet they put themselves and others in serious danger by not knowing how guns work.

I'm not from the USA yet even I know about the safety of guns by getting a random YouTube recommendation years ago.

The ending is also very very very rushed and there is bad closure, it really ruins it and it seems that when they were making this they kinda didn't know what to do cos of all the pressure the film crew were probably under, or maybe, dramas are just not for me.

Trash

Korea has given us some amazing films over the past 15-20 years, and being a big fan of their action-thrillers, I decided to check out their TV programmes... Wow, are they bad.

The first thing noticed with Korea TV shows is that they all look cheap and quickly made. Yes, there is crane and dolly work, and they seem to frown on the detestable shaky-cam that plagues Western TV nowadays, but it's as if somebody said, "Hey, I have a 4K camera, let's make a TV programme," and to hell with aesthetics.

The second thing - which is also quickly noticed - is how bad the dialogue is. Films are seemingly honed to near perfection, whereas dialogue in Korean TV programmes (or, at least, in the handful I've tried to watch), meanders, repeats itself and is plain corny.

City Hunter, unfortunately, isn't an exception to the above. I got one and a half episodes in before I had to question why I was subjecting myself to such nonsense!

The plot plays out like a teenage melodrama disguised as an action-thriller, but ridiculous coincidences, bad characters, slow pacing and action sequences massively below the level I was expecting (not to mention how infrequently their occur), soon nailed its coffin shut. There's also the tiny factor of complete implausibility, as some kid who was effectively raised in the jungle somewhere near Cambodia, is speaking with modern Korean dialect and accent, and posing as an American computer genius... despite not being able to speak a word of English or having ever seen a computer!

Oh, and working for and interacting directly with the Korean president is a given, when you have a fake degree from MIT.

So, if you're a fan of Korean TV already (not that I can fathom why), you may be able to overlook all the stupidity and badness and enjoy the tall lead with his spiffy hair, or the admittedly gorgeous character of Kim Na Na, regardless of how preachy and imposing she acts, but for those who love Korean cinema and are looking to give their TV a go, look elsewhere (and I hope that you find higher quality programmes than all the "recommended" ones that I did).

Great show, kept me on my toes

I've seen many Korean dramas, and this one is on the top of my list. I'll make this short, and I know I sound cheesy saying this was a 10 out of 10, but I truly think that this deserves this rating. I love action with a bit of romance, so this drama was perfect for me. Hope you can watch it soon!

Minmin couple the most perfect and matching

Only discovered City Hunter drama in last year 2016 after I started watching Heirs and Personal Taste which lead me to search for another drama under Lee Min Ho. After watching almost all drama acted by Lee Min Ho ,City Hunter is the best drama and i like it the most. Not only the story line is interesting but both the lead actors (Lee Min HO and Park Min Young) is the most matching and perfect couple which make the drama so interesting. But the ending part of the story is not satisfying because is a puzzle to the audience whether is Kim Na Na and Lee Yoon Sang will together happily ever after. Their chemistry is really good. I started to fall in love with this minmin couples. But i know is too late because now they have separated. I felt so sad to read about they broke up. I sincerely hope that in one fine day, Lee Min Ho and Park Min Young will get back together again. They are really so matching together among all Lee Min Ho co-star that he has worked together. Love to see both so playful and laugh together so happily.

Starts out OK but really slows down after first 3 episodes.

Unfortunately, this series starts out fairly well, but then about 1/3 of the way through it really starts going downhill.

If the series had stuck to the main plot and characters it would have been OK, but the introduction of never-resolved subplots, and totally extraneous characters ended up spoiling it for me. For example, far too much time was spent on the totally air-headed presidents daughter, who added nothing at all to the story, and is left at a dead end. Flashbacks were way overdone - it seemed like the object was to fill up space rather than advance the plot.

In general, the main plot and most subplots are so full of holes and unresolved issues that have to wonder if 3 hours or so was assembled from outtakes to fill the alloted number of episodes.

If you are a Korean Drama fan, "Lie to Me" and "My Girlfriend is a Gumiho" are much better choices.

The series started out like "The Dirty Dozen" and ended like the purple dinosaur "Barney Goes to School" video.

One of the best Korean drama I ever watched

I am sorry if there are some grammatical mistakes, also this is my first review.

I started watching the series because of Lee Min-Ho. Right at the beginning, I liked how the actors played their roles, it can be seen that they invested a lot to make everything turn out as it should. I've watched a lot of movies and series and each of them has their own drama and great actors, but this series impressed me so much. The plot of the series itself contains so much pain, revenge, dark secrets, love, shows us how strong and special family ties can be, and I was especially impressed by the end of the series how much emotion Lee Min-Ho (Lee Yun-seong) and Sang-Jung Kim (Lee Jin-pyo) invested to film it. As for me, I wish that in the end they showed us the wedding of Lee Yun-seong and Kim Na-na, but this ending wasn't so bad either. I would honestly like if they can film second season (it's never too late for that), and preferably with the same actors, so that we can finally see Lee Yun-seong and Kim Na-na get together. I'm not a person who cries with series like this, but this series made me cry. Congrats to the actors and everyone who participated in the creation of this series, you all did an excellent job!!!

I am gonna continue to watch Lee Min-Ho for sure, he really is an excellent actor.
