Jack's speech-to-text typewriter is a critique of technologies and advancements that are not meant to help humanity, but to act as a status symbol or to further a particular aesthetic. Everything in Jack's world is nothing more than a money-making scheme. This episode focuses on the developing relationship between Jack and Joey, as Jack tries to convince Joey that he can have everything he wants. However, this is difficult to believe after all the lies he has told. Jack fabricates a letter from Jenkins and sends it to Shirl, ordering them to delay launches until next quarter. Shirl is upset and wants to move on from Vistaville, but Jack manipulates her by reminding her of the joy they are giving people. Joey starts working for Brightside and Jack goes out with him on his first day, but Joey is unable to get inside a single door. Jack is encouraging Joey to succeed in Vistaville, even buying him tickets for a baseball game. However, Shirl is skeptical of their success due to the launch delay. She thinks it is time for Jack to let go of Joey and focus on sales. Herb and Ed try selling to a couple, but they accidentally make a pitch to a man and his mistress. Herb confesses to the wife, Myrtle, and leaves her with a pamphlet, assuring her she deserves a fresh start. Myrtle intentionally causes a grilling contraption to malfunction, setting her house ablaze. Jack gives Joey new tactics for selling to sad and desperate people, and Joey successfully gets inside one door on his own. From his car, Jack watches his son proudly. Ed sneaks out to break into Shirl's car and use the refund money to make a bet on the game, but he's too late. Joey confesses to Herb he didn't actually get in the door during his sales pitch, so he leaves the game early. Back at his retail job, Joey makes a pitch to his boss without his knowledge, and when his boss decides to buy a C-Plex, Joey returns to Jack with the news. Jack invites him inside to help them with all the new calls they're getting from Shirl's ads.
