Much darker and way more gritty...!!!
PANDIAN12062111 July 2023
A movie isn't worthy with just few spectacular action sequences or a gutsy performance by its lead character's but literally it has to go plot test to get effective on whole... Agnieszka carries the whole movie on her shoulders that way ahead of its flaws and turns to be a sole survivor.... But yes the camera work are the most effective aspect that keeps it's momentum flow along with the movie while action blocks are the soul of the movie... While the villainous act are cringy and just acts as pop up character.... On whole it's not too emotional as the title suggest but just a pure adrenaline action blocks that keeps u hold until the last act... Overall skip it or see it on ur own risk...

started off ok
LetsReviewThat2625 May 2023
Dzien matki, or mothers day is a new polish netlfix movie. It started out well as we get introduced to nina, an ex officer who still knows her training. And after getting tangled up with some men outside a shop, her son gets kidnapped. She does really well with the fighting and I enjoyed the way it was shot. But things did take a bit of step back after and I found myself getting confused after that as things went this way and that and nina was just kinda going all around without anything happening. So a good beginning but the movie just go so off course/ I did however enjoy the action and the actor playing nina was good in her role, but dissopointing overall.

Disappointing
rastaiz24 May 2023
The usual "Hero saves/protects the innocent." which is typical of the genre and that's ok. What I didn't like are the unrealistic fighting scenes, hero and foes and the excess of unneeded special effects.

The heroin is allegedly a retired special forces operator who doesn't know how to handle firearms, has no situational awareness and loves to pick the most complicated and dangerous way to neutralize the enemy while displaying superpowers like ubiquity, super-strenght, an anti-pain/shock absorbing body. Her foes? Same thing just more stupid and without superpowers.

Could have been a great move.

Lame, Unfunny, Waste of Time
bogave26 May 2023
When will I ever learn? The ratings were a huge red flag, but I thought it might be cool anyways. Total waste of time. It was trying to be edgy, funny, and bad ass all at the same time and missed badly. The plot line was ridiculous. The characters stupid. I could go on and on. The main character is actually cool and believable, but she had no script or plot to work with. Overall, very dumb.

It's amazing how Netflix can manipulate their movies by pushing it on us. This was the #2 movie in their charts and I stupidly fell for it.

The supposed "witch" was nothing but a fat slob walking around and also missed badly as a character. Basically don't waste your time. So bad!!

Mother's Day
Tweekums20 July 2023
Nina Nowak is a former special operations agent who has crossed the wrong people. They can't get to her directly so they kidnap her son. He was adopted and has no idea that she is his mother but that won't stop her doing whatever it takes to get him back. This includes taking on assorted gangsters, agents of a corrupt foreign power and some people she thought she could trust.

This may not be a great film; the plot is hardly original and the action isn't exactly realistic but if you can put your brain in neutral for ninety minutes it is quite fun. There aren't too many let ups in the action and the fights and shoot outs do have a sense of danger. Unlike many action films our lead won't survive each encounter without getting hurt. The action is exciting and fairly bone-crunching even if there is an excess of slow-motion at times. The bad guys are all suitably unpleasant and equally expendable while our heroine is enjoyably tough yet vulnerable. The acting is solid enough; the villains ham it up ridiculously at times but that is part of the fun. Agnieszka Grochowska impresses as Nina. The locations used are mostly stereotypical dingy disused industrial buildings or night time in less salubrious areas of Warsaw. Overall I'd say this is hardly a must see but it is fun if you are a fan of the genre.

These comments are based on watching the film in Polish with English subtitles.

Another Single-mother to the Rescue!!!
LovesCinematography28 May 2023
This year must be the year for single mothers to be heroes it seems. Some of the movies I've seen are even at the expense of fathers. Some fathers are even the evil villains in the movie. I guess this is what to expect ahead of us.

Mother's day in and of itself is an action packed film with very intense single-shot fighting scenes. It really carried the film. And just like the J-Lo's version (which I assume is the U. S. version since the plots are almost exactly the same), the villains are under-developed and one had completely unnecessary nudity. The b-cheeks are very unwelcomed.

I give this film a 5. Action was kinda cool, but this didn't leave much of an impression on me.

The Polish version of J-Lo's The Mother
Top_Dawg_Critic26 May 2023
The big difference between the two is that this one wasn't a big Hollywood production with 3 well known prolific writers, yet this film was still more enjoyable. Sure it had some plot and technical issues, but considering it's a low budget international B film with fairly new filmmakers and an unknown cast, this one shined compared to The Mother. It had a Pulp Fiction theme, feel and overboard colorful characters, and although the lead actress Agnieszka Grochowska as Nina didn't really fit her character, this Polish actress still managed to pull it off and be more convincing than J-Lo in the action scenes. And I will also say, the action scenes were pretty impressive and well-styled and choreographed for a non-Hollywood production. Had some of the nonsense that attempted to be funny (that wasn't, more like cringe) been omitted, and the colorful overboard characters toned down a bit, I would've easily given this an extra star. Nevertheless as an international B action thriller, flaws and all, it was still more fun and entertaining than the J-Lo version. So it's a decent one-time watch, and a good way to redeem your entertainment experience after being disappointed as much as I was after watching The Mother. This mom film was awesome in comparison.

Make my MOTHER'S DAY
searchanddestroy-130 May 2023
Or a Polish badass girl, who, as the recent Netflix THE MOTHER, proceeds in the NIKITA rip-offs list. Or if you prefer JOHN WICK in skirts who would meet DIRTY HARRY. OK, watching this once in a while, I agree, but too much is too much. I was determined to watch this one, because it is Polish, and I was curious to see how Polish film industry could make such a film, and second, to review a movie without seeing it is totally idiotic, non sense isn't it? So, I saw it and that confirms what I was a bit scared about in the first place.... The villains are here totally f...up and only this could justify to watch this action flick only for what it is. An agreeable time waster but rapidly forgettable.

Don't mess with The Mother!
chand-suhas12 June 2023
This Polish film about an ex-NATO special operations agent, also a mother who had given up her son for adoption yet keeps tab on him time to time. She is dead as per the records and minding her own business until she is informed that her son is kidnapped. A classic rookie mistake to devise a stupid plan that involves the kidnapping of her son followed by the threat of having him killed. Rest, she unleashes herself onto the baddies and the body counts begin.

Just recently, I had watch JLo's The Mother, a forgettable film and this Polish film too with certain similarities, falls into the same tropes aka the negative ones. What works here is a committed performance by the lead Agnieszka Grochowska as Nina and some violent action scenes. Apart from that, it simply drags on with forgettable villains and the middling mother-son bonding which isn't that effective. It's a regular action film with barely anything new to offer.

Stop, or my mom will kick your ...
kosmasp3 June 2023
No pun intended - and yes she is more likely to kick you instead of shooting you (that other movie/title I stole the pun for). Which also makes it quite ... well she should not be able to kick so many people no matter her training and her abilities ... but if you buy that Steven Seagal or anyone else for that matter can do it .. why not her? Exactly - just suspend your disbelief and go with the flow.

After J-Lo earlier this year, we get another mother who people should not have messed with ... well of course it is imperative that they do ... so we get a movie of course. That all being said, the fight choreography is quite well done. There is not much of a story, but you are not here for that ... hopefully. You are here to watch the mayhem ensue ... and that it does ... with blood and violence and all what is needed to make this ... well the movie it wants to be when it grows up ...

Straight kick your butt or kill you movie.
alltakes16 June 2023
Lame. Straight up hand to hand/shoot you/slice or stab you/blow you up action movie. No interesting storyline. Action from start to finish. Best part was how she had this unique ability to disrupt adversaries by throwing solid objects at their head/face before finishing them off. It was actually amusing. But, again, storyline was pretty predictable and lacking. This is the kind of movie you watch if you want to down a few beers with friends and watch Jason Moore like action and critique or analyze aspects of the action sequences.. Interestingly, I thought she resembled Demi Moore and during a couple moments Linda Hamilton (i.e., The Terminator) .

Better than expected
mchportelli28 May 2023
A lot better than I thought this film would be. If you like action and thrills and a bit of suspense then this should hit the spot. The story is simple it seems at first, a kid is kidnapped out of revenge on the main character the mother. She is very highly trained and a master at defending herself against a pack of thugs, and it looks like she can't be beat. A little exaggerated, a little unreal but it is one of those films; a lot of fighting and a lot of gruesomeness so take it or leave it.

What I liked about this film was when I thought the story had reached its conclusion, there was more and a bit more than I'd bargained for so that's why I gave it such a high rating. The acting was fine apart from her son and it wasn't drawn out it was fast paced and engrossing. Give it a try if this is what you're after.

A smart, graphically inventive B-movie to be savoured straight from the bottle.
norbert-plan-618-71581317 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Another John Wick variation, again, but with a Polish twist. Here, a former spy who's practically a beggar finds herself rescuing her son, who's been adopted and doesn't know her. We can't remember why they want to kill him, but we don't care. His mother goes back to work and kills them one by one.

As this dramatic framework has already been seen many times, this product can only be apprehended on its variants, even its originalities. These are to be found in the visual impact of the film's photography, sets, costumes and make-up, all influenced by the aesthetics of video games.

The film is set in Warsaw, with some pretty wild wildlife and some very graphic and horrific villains. The whole thing takes place at night in abandoned factories and basements, with highly polished photography and choreography featuring playful visual effects. It's both gruesome and fun. With lots of violence and fighting. What's missing is a barely hinted sexual dimension, and some subversion.

Here again, everything is technically perfect. Lead actress Agnieszka Grochowska is impressive. The choreography and sets are spectacular: dank, dirty basements, an abandoned factory. All in all, the film contains some fine visual ideas.

And the humorous, open-ended ending augurs well for a sequel. So much the better. A potato chip movie, crunchy, crunchy film, to be savored in the moment without regret.

Cringe
greekdx27 July 2023
Another movie that resembles its rather fair predecessor of JLO The mother . I had heard rather poor critics fore the JLos story of this year though I liked it . Dzien matki is the polish version of HLOs movie as ir was recently released I will not refer anything to the story of DZin Matki and though I agree with someone's onions on imdb I prefer to write my own points .

First the story starts relatively good but as the time passes the story gets in slippery slope towards more and more ridiculous. The story starts with 4 people playing at bad with some girls when Mrs Nina an ex warrior of Nato soldiers fights against them using beer boxes and wining at them. The problem is that after 20 minutes you see insane scenes as for example the guy dressed with just a very minimalistic G string kind of , across his body and talking to his father's cut head. Some other crazy scenes are with a lethal guy using electrified things to kill someone in his head and next to that laugh for his good try.. Some of them are using some very bad humor Nina was quite good to stop all these bad guys.. or at least most of them These could be some similarities between Tarantino stories with less finesse .

Technically this movie is: no plot except some poor start middle and finish . Nothing related to the characters including Nina. The only you can see is some good action orchestration and quite loosely linked parts. Limited moral as she tries to save her son.

Rating : 2/10 quite cringe.

Horrible Choreography
mattytung30 May 2023
I dunno who Directed such a mess but this is one of the worst films created in history. Utter trash for story.

Fight choreography is plain stupid and using switch camera shots and CGI that is unecessary.

Poor acting and the main character is dull and dead on the inside. Not sure why they casted her in such a film.

Villain was looney but too weird for my liking but a bad guy is still a bad guy I guess.

Honestly, the main character should have and would have died about 20 times over. Doesn't even know how to fight.

Would not recommend to anyone and it is a waste of your time.

Honestly, the worst russian acting I have ever seen in my life.

Not sure how they managed to make this an hour and a half.

I'm so bored of this style
olcayozfirat27 July 2023
Polish-based Netflix production of the year 2023 is a lousy action movie. The movie industry is divided into two as before and after John Wick. All post-John Wick action movies began to be imitated. A universe of undead, well-fighting and weapon-wielding fantasy agents has been created. All types of people were used in this universe. Male, female, disabled, old. This is the version that is the mother of those examples. I usually wait until the end of the movies. But when I saw the irrational scenes in this movie, I couldn't stand it and watched it fast forward. Let's see when the industry will get tired of these kind of movies.

There is a bit of sexuality and nudity in the movie.

Gritty action thriller with energy and plenty of pain
mfoxartist30 December 2023
This is a solid action flick that offers an unbeatable woman who takes on a battalion of bad guys to rescue her teenage son, who has lived with his step-parents all his life. Our superhero is Nina Nowak, a former special ops agent played by Agnieszka Grochowska, who gave up her son to protect him from her inherently dangerous lifestyle. Despite her sacrifice, her son Max (played by Adrian Delikta) is kidnapped by the bad guys and used as bait to lure Nina out in the open. Their maneuver works, much to their regret.

The confrontations are swift and violent and Nina's fighting skills are top notch, but she doesn't win every battle...but we know she's going to win the war. I like that Nina actually suffers a variety of bloody injuries during her conflicts, which aren't always realistically portrayed but at least the film gives a nod to combat consequences.

Inevitably and forevermore, "Mother's Day" will be compared to "The Mother," a film starring Jennifer Lopez that was released just months earlier and has a very similar plot. "The Mother" is weak sauce compared to this Polish production and Lopez (who I actually like) doesn't hold a candle to Grochowska when it comes to gritty action heroes. Lopez always looks like a runway model -- an aging one, but still in bloom -- even when she's in the midst of a brawl. Grochowska sustains all the aches and agonies you'd expect from so many battles and skirmishes.

I gave "The Mother" a 4-star review but "Mother's Day," skillfully written and directed by Mateusz Rakowicz, is worthy of its 7 stars. It's one of those movies where you need to completely suspend your disbelief to enjoy, but if you relax and don't pick too many nits, you're bound to have a good time.

She is Polish Jackie Chan.
fariborzzaksea1 July 2023
She is Polish Jackie Chan. An angry mother (with Jackie Chan style fighting tactics) messing with drug cartel's thugs . Her son who has American Dad (American Marine) does not know her mother is still alive. Movie atmosphere is a little Cold War biased , which shows Eastern Europeans are very bad/criminal people . These kind of people want to mess with the son who has American Dad ?!?!?! Noway Hollywood would let this to happen .Stunt work is very good , when you watch movie you can feel the the atmosphere of Eastern Europe ,Nina (The mother ) action movement (Jackie Chan style fighting) are very good almost the same as Angelia Jolly in her Tomb Raider movies. Even the American son defeats Bobby Fischer in chess ?!?!?! And hi is going to follow Bobby's way to defeat Eastern people. I told you a little Cold War biased movie.

Shock Therapy
lavatch20 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
There was quite an intense performance by the actress playing Nina Nowak, who is protective of the son she has never known.

We never learn the complete story about the the death of the son's father and why Nina was forced to give up her son for adoption. Her enemies located her and the son anyway, and Nina must spend the entire film in an epic battle against the forces of evil.

Both the inept police and the criminals are nefarious creatures who come into conflict with Nina in the course of the film. One of the evil predators carries devices the inflict a shock on the victim. Another problematic area was Nina's ally in the police who suddenly turned against her. It was never made clear why he needed money for his daughter Zosha.

The entire film was a kind of shock therapy experience. Through it all, Nina is a survivor. When she finally returns her son to his adopted parents, they don't even invite her in for a cup of coffee ... another shock to the system.

Makes Lopez's "Mother" Look Like A Panty Raid
zardoz-1319 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Polish writer & director Mateusz Rakowicz's feminist action thriller "Mother's Day" sets a whole new set of standards for the conventional tale about a mom protecting her cub. In this instance, for example, an ex-Special Ops agent, Nina (Agnieszka Grochowska), is summoned to save her clueless, 17-year-old son Max son (Adrian Delikta) from a psychotic army of degenerate dastards. Now, let's clear the air, either Netflix or at least one critic are comparing "Mother's Day" as quote "the dirty Polish equivalent of the recent Netflix-sensation "The Mother" that stars Latino vocalist Jennifer Lopez. The Lopez outing amounts to little more than a second-rate sizzler that rarely generates more than an occasional spark. Niki Caro's "The Mother" exemplifies a typical celebrity-driven, Hollywood actioneer teeming with anachronisms galore. Lopez is nowhere near as convincing in the physical combat brawls as Agnieszka Grochowska. The primary difference between the two films is largely cosmetic. Lopez still looks like she stepped out of a beauty spa, while ravaged Grochowska displays the slings and arrows of her own "outrageous fortune." Battered and bruised from constant bouts with an enemy that keeps on coming and never seems to back, multiplying itself like the mythical Hydra with whom Hercules clashed, Nina never backs down, never gets ground, and displays the kind of tenacious resilience that Jennifer Garner rarely mustered in director Pierre Morel's revenge-themed crime thriller "Peppermint." Suffice to say, Rakowicz takes everything to the limit and then some beyond with his exhilarating kinetic action scenes and Nina emerges as a variation on Keanu Reeves' indestructible John Wick. The action choreography is a blast to watch. Rakowicz and co-scribe Lukasz M. Maciejewski add some compelling complications. Basically, Nina is such a terror herself that she has to live in the shadows since she is still being stalked by her enemies, and Max lives with a surrogate set of parents. The bittersweet ending is terrific!

It's her resilience that makes this worth seeing.
lojitsu6 August 2023
Here's The 4K Lowedown on "Mother's Day" (TV_MA - 2023 - Netflix)

Genre: Action/Thriller

My Score: 7.0 Cast=4 Acting=6 Plot=7 Ending=8 Story=7 Violent=9 Pace=8 F/X=7 Intense=8 Twist=6

A secretive ex-NATO Special Operations agent must use all her lethal skills to save her son who has been kidnapped by ruthless gangsters.

"You won't find him...blood for blood...life for life." This Polish film is another foreign film that I enjoyed which Netflix has put out. Having similarities to Taken with the story, I liked the action here more than J-Lo's "The Mother". The script hurts the acting here, as the dialogue is weak (so watch it dubbed or not it won't matter). The lead more than makes up for it with her fighting skill...but it's her resilience as a mother that weighs this out as worth a watch for me.

naushika24 May 2023
Loved and enjoyed this movie a lot!!!

The theme of this movie is nothing new: a mother with a (at first) unknown past is trying to save her son (who does not know that she is his mother).

Having said that, this movie has a lot to offer:

The movie has witty dialogues and terrific action scenes.

The lead actress is stunning! Her acting is believable, exceptional and nearly impeccable.

The other actors are also doing a decent to unexpectedly refreshing job.

The cinematography of the movie is unprecedented.

Go watch this terrific movie! It is really a pleasant surprise in the Polish movie scene!!

A well-balanced film, some love, humor, action, grotesque, comic, femininity, motherhood, fatherhood etc etc.
uniomo25 May 2023
There are many such details and they are well arranged in the film, but you need a minimum of knowledge to catch them and understand what is going on.

For example: There are Russians, they have old equipment and a chess player who invents everything but when someone wins with him, he can show respect.

There is a policeman whose family problems strongly affect his mental and physical condition.

There is a criminal who is a criminal for pleasure, that is, for sadomasochistic ecstasy and there is a mother who loves secretly and is completely imbued with it, showing no love to the outside. And an adult son whom this unexpressed love has to capture and understand.

A whipcrack, high-octane, ultra-violent, crime thriller
PaulDBrazill28 May 2023
Mateusz Rakowicz Mother's Day is a whipcrack, high-octane, ultra-violent, crime thriller that is laced with dark and decidedly offbeat humour. The film is grounded by a truly great central performance from Agnieszka Grochowska as Nina, who manages to be both down to earth and adrenaline pumping, And the supporting character actors also perform with great aplomb. . The actions scenes are as tight as hell and very well choreographed . The villains are vivid and gaudy, and just on the right side of over-the-top. There are moments of laugh out loud humour as well as tenderness, and the pulsating score keeps the energy level high.
