Exclusive: FX’s drama pilot Seven Sisters has cast the remainder of the siblings joining Elizabeth Olsen and Cristin Milioti as part of the core family: Meredith Hagner, Odessa Young, Zoë Winters, Bridget Brown, and Carolyn Kettig play the remaining five sisters, and Philip Ettinger will play their brother.

They join Anthony Edwards and J. Smith-Cameron, who play the patriarch and matriarch, Paul and Franchesa Bosco, respectively.

The project, from FX Productions, follows a large, tight-knit family that begins to unravel when a sister (Olsen) starts communicating with a voice no one else can hear, forcing them to confront long-buried secrets.

Seven Sisters is executive produced by Will Arbery, who wrote the pilot; Sean Durkin, who will direct it; and Garrett Basch. If the pilot goes forward, it would mark Basch’s fifth series for FX, where his company Dive has a long-standing first-look deal, following Devs, Reservation Dogs, What We Do in the Shadows,...

Magnolia Selects brings award-winning indie films straight to you
Image
A niche streaming service made for indie film lovers who crave something different.

Back when I was at USC Film School, I got a crash course in indie cinema. While everyone else was obsessing over the latest blockbusters, I was sitting in screenings of microbudget dramas, foreign gems, and documentaries that stuck with me way longer than any superhero movie ever could. That appreciation for indie films never left (“Run Lola Run” anyone?), which is why Magnolia Selects is such a great find. This niche streaming service is all about independent filmmaking, curating a lineup of award-winning dramas, interesting (and entertaining) documentaries, and under-the-radar gems you won’t find on the big streamers. Dreama Walker in Compliance (2012)
Compliance (2012) Movie Ending Explained: What Happens to Becky, Sandra, and Daniels?
Dreama Walker in Compliance (2012)
Compliance (2012) directed by Craig Zobel, features an ensemble cast led by Dreama Walker as Becky, Ann Dowd as Sandra, Pat Healy as Daniels, Philip Ettinger as Kevin, Ashlie Atkinson as Marti, and Stephen Payne as Harold. Compliance starts like any other thriller, slow and measured but when it picks up, it transforms into something entirely unexpected. The concept of prank calling in cinema isn’t new, but this film handles it in a way that becomes the true highlight of the story. Everything whether it’s the cast, the theme, or the storyline is restrained and purposeful, delivering a film that spans just 90 minutes. The film follows the story of Becky, an innocent and naive employee who becomes victim of a prank call.

The movie opens with the employees, led by Sandra, gathering for a morning meeting before the store opens. It’s going to be a busy day because it’s the weekend,...

‘The Penguin’ Director Lands New HBO First-Look Deal
Image
The Penguin‘s visionary lead director, Craig Zobel, has signed a new multi-year, first-look deal at HBO.

The Emmy nominee helmed the first three episodes of the Gothic crime drama, helping establish the visual language of the series, as well as serving as an executive producer.

The Penguin started strong out of the gate with an acclaimed pilot and gradually became one of the network’s biggest hits in years, with its series premiere having racked up a cumulative 18 million U.S. viewers.

Zobel previously told The Hollywood Reporter that he kicked off his relationship with the show by writing Reeves a fan letter about The Batman. “I happened to have his email,” he said. “So I reached out to say, ‘Hey, not for nothing, [The Batman] was the superhero movie I wanted to see right now. You killed it.’ That was my first time saying anything to Matt at all.

‘Terminator Zero’ Cast and Character Guide: Meet the Actors in Netflix’s Spinoff | Photos
Image
Just in time for Judgment Day, Netflix has a new installment in the “Terminator” franchise for fans of the iconic, long-running sci-fi action franchise. This time, however, you won’t see any familiar faces — the series is animated. However, you might recognize some of the voices, so we’ve put together a handy guide to the “Terminator Zero” cast.

You won’t see Sarah Connor, Kyle Reese or Arnold’s T-800 in this story — it introduces a new timeline and all new characters to go with it. Set in 1997, Japan, “Terminator Zero” focuses on a developer named Malcolm Lee, who is hard at work on another AI system to compete with Skynet and save the human race. Naturally, a Terminator unit is sent back in time to target him and his three children, while a soldier from the future is sent back with a mission of her own.

Ann Dowd Led a Psychological Thriller Based on a Chilling True Story
Image
Craig Zobel's 2012 thriller Compliance does not receive enough recognition for being difficult to watch. It's currently available to stream on Max, but you might find yourself pausing it every few minutes for a break from its relentlessly unpleasant story. The film narrates the events of a day in a fast-food franchise. Early in the morning, Sandra, the restaurant's manager, receives a phone call from a man impersonating a police officer, who falsely accuses Becky, one of her employees, of committing a crime. Over a few hours, a character who's initially referred to as Officer Daniels (Pat Healy) convinces Sandra (Ann Dowd) to inflict a series of punishments on Becky, which eventually crosses the line into sexual assault. Disturbingly, though the characters in Compliance are fictional, the film is based on nearly identical crimes that occurred at a McDonald's in Kentucky in 2004.

What’s Coming to Max in July 2023: ‘Full Circle,’ 'Brandi Carlile: In the Canyon Haze,' 'Harley Quinn' Season 4
Image
The original Max series “Full Circle” debuts on July 13. Directed by Steven Soderbergh, the new drama investigates a kidnapping gone wrong in New York, revealing the secrets and lies of multiple characters. Or as the trailer warns: “Everything is connected.” The six-episode limited series stars Zazie Beetz, Claire Danes, Jim Gaffigan, Jharrel Jerome, Timothy Olyphant, and Dennis Quaid.

Watch the “Full Circle” trailer:

The four-part documentary “Last Call: When A Serial Killer Stalked Queer New York” is set in the early 1990s as the AIDS crisis worsens. The media’s distorted coverage of the gay victims, coupled with the homophobic biases of the criminal justice system, undermine the investigation. The docuseries — which premieres on Max on July 9 — illustrates how the LGBTQ+ community fought to solve the murders and demand attention for those murdered.

Sarah Burgess (‘Impeachment’ showrunner) on meeting Monica Lewinsky: ‘I’ve never been that nervous’ [Exclusive Video Interview]
Image
“I was so mindful that I was coming into a pre-existing, incredibly successful franchise that Ryan [Murphy] built,” explains Sarah Burgess, the co-writer and showrunner for “Impeachment: American Crime Story” on FX. “Because Ryan directed episode one, I first met him through his ideas for my script that I had written. We were supposed to start shooting this show in March of 2020, so there was a very sudden stop. Finally everything came together in the Fall of 2020 and I met him at a production meeting. He mentioned one of my favorite movies without he and I ever speaking about it, ‘The Lies of Others,’ as a visual reference and tone reference for the show. As a neurotic, self-involved writer it meant so much to me that I felt that this person read and understood the anxious tension in the script.”

We talked to Burgess as part of our “Meet the Experts” TV showrunners panel.

It Takes a Village to Raise an Artist: Jim Beam reconnects Muse to the Community That Raised Them
Image
The last time Muse set foot onstage together was two and a half years ago in Lima, Peru, the final date of their Simulation Theory world tour. The show was an explosive, sci-fi circus rife with majestic dystopian themes, and laser-tag neon lighting. These bandstand theatrics have been a trademark of the trio’s live shows for almost two decades, but for their first gig since 2019, they’re taking a different approach. Thanks to Jim Beam, the band is returning to their hometown, for an intimate performance in front of the community that raised them.

Here’s What’s New on Amazon Prime Video in April 2022
Outer Range (2022)
If you’re looking for new movies and TV shows to watch on Amazon Prime Video in April, you’ve come to the right place. This month doesn’t bring a ton in terms of new Prime Video originals, but there are a few noteworthy titles. “Outer Range,” premiering April 15, is a new series that’s essentially “Yellowstone” but sci-fi. Josh Brolin plays a rancher fighting for his land in Wyoming who encounters a supernatural twist.

There’s also “A Very British Scandal,” which stars Claire Foy and Paul Bettany and focuses on the divorce of the Duke and Dutchess of Argyll, and the second season of the animated series “Undone” on April 29.

In terms of Prime Video movies, Chris Pine and Thandiwe Newton star in the thriller ”All the Old Knives” which is streaming on April 8, and noteworthy library titles being added in April include “Fast Times at Ridgemont High,...

Amazon Prime Video New Releases: April 2022
Josh Brolin
Good news for all you Brolin-heads! Amazon Prime Video’s list of new releases for April 2022 is highlighted by one very intriguing TV project starring Thanos himself.

The Josh Brolin-starring Outer Range premieres April 15 and looks like it could be a wild ride. The synopsis is terse and reads “A rancher fighting for his land and family stumbles upon an unfathomable mystery at the edge of Wyoming’s wilderness, forcing a confrontation with the Unknown in ways both intimate and cosmic in the untamable American West.” That, combined with an enigmatic first trailer, has our interest piqued.

Also on the TV side of things this month is season 2 of the beautifully rotoscoped series Undone on April 29. Rosa Salazar returns as Alma, a woman who may have become unstuck in time to help save her scientist father’s life. Before that, the British TV series The Outlaws makes its debut...

Desperate for income, she takes a shady gig as a “dummy shopper,” buying goods with stolen credit cards supplied by a handsome and charismatic middleman named Youcef (Theo Rossi). Faced with a series of dead-end job interviews, Emily soon finds herself seduced by the quick cash and illicit thrills of black-market capitalism, and increasingly interested in her mentor Youcef. Dear Oscar voters: Please don’t overlook Ann Dowd for her career-defining turn in ‘Mass’
Image
Ann Dowd famously financed her own Best Supporting Actress Oscar campaign after she earned glowing reviews for her performance in “Compliance” (2012) but the indie film’s distributor, Magnolia Pictures, which picked up the title at the Sundance Film Festival, didn’t have the budget to send out screeners to academy voters. Despite winning Best Supporting Actress from the National Board of Review and receiving nominations from the Critics Choice Awards, Independent Spirit Awards and various other regional critics’ groups, the actor did not end up with an Oscar nomination. Now, almost a decade later, Dowd finds herself in the Oscar race yet again, thanks to another indie film that had its world premiere at Sundance: “Mass.” With Oscar voting commencing on Thursday, January 27, as of this writing, I ask of you, dear voters, to consider Dowd for her career-defining turn in the Bleecker Street release.

Ann Dowd (‘Mass’) on the ‘remarkable’ and ‘spiritual’ experience of mining her character’s grief [Exclusive Video Interview]
Image
“It’s a remarkable experience… a spiritual one,” explains Ann Dowd of diving into her character Linda in “Mass.” The film from Fran Kranz casts the veteran actress as a woman grappling with the unthinkable: her son committed a school shooting, killing other students before turning the gun on himself. The emotional drama keeps its four central characters in one room for the majority of the film. For Dowd, mining the intense emotions of Linda’s experience proved to be a moving exploration of the possibilities of acting. Watch the exclusive video interview above.

“I was very curious about Linda,” says Dowd. “I couldn’t imagine how she was able to come to the place that she is at the start of the film.” The character enters the space desperate for connection. Linda sits beside her estranged husband Richard (Reed Birney) across from a set of parents whose son was...

Critics Choice Awards Film Voters Guide: Memorable Moments and a Pivotal Year
Image
In 2003 at the eighth annual Critics Choice Awards, there were three in the actor race: Jack Nicholson for “About Schmidt,” Daniel Day-Lewis for “Gangs of New York” and Robin Williams for “One Hour Photo.” There was a tie — between Nicholson and Day-Lewis — but Williams ended up stealing the show when Nicholson invited him on stage. “Robin would you come up and would you give the funniest acceptance speech I ever gave?” Nicholson inquired. Williams then launched into a lengthy “speech” that had stars from Renée Zellweger to Nicole Kidman howling and was praised by the media.

It remains a standout moment in the organization’s long history and a personal favorite of Joey Berlin, CEO of the Critics Choice Assn. (Cca), who has served as executive producer on every Critics Choice Awards broadcast since its inception with the film awards in 1995; TV awards began in 2011. Now, the Critics Choice Awards find themselves at a crossroads.

Ann Dowd Explains How She Learned to Embrace Difficult Material, from ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ to ‘Mass’
Image
In 2017, Ann Dowd was nominated for both “The Leftovers” and “Handmaid’s Tale,” which she won. It changed her life. After decades of working under the radar, she didn’t have to audition anymore. In an interview, she described the experience of entering into “that kind of arena where there’s visibility.”

It took 30 years for the veteran New York stage actress to break out in movies with her role as a rule-following manager in Craig Zobel’s Sundance hit “Compliance.” She’s all for the slow burn of her career. “Age is underrated,” Dowd said. “What you get as you grow older, if you’re willing to listen: ‘Let’s keep the focus on the work.'”

Now Dowd is back in the film spotlight again for her exemplary work in first-time writer-director Fran Kranz’s Parkland-inspired Sundance four-hander “Mass.” Working with three theater actors in an intense...

Ann Dowd is early Oscars front-runner for ‘Mass’: Will she finally get her due a decade after financing her own campaign?
Image
Ann Dowd leads our Oscar odds for her powerhouse performance in “Mass” as the mother of a school shooter. Bleecker Street releases this intense drama on October 8. The Emmy winner (“The Handmaid’s Tale”) is the early favorite to win Best Supporting Actress, according to the combined predictions of thousands of Gold Derby readers. If she does win, it would be a fitting end to a story almost 10 years in the making. Back in 2012 she had to finance her own Best Supporting Actress campaign for her role in the indie film “Compliance.” Better late than never.

“Compliance” premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2012, which was followed by a release to general audiences that August. The film starred Dreama Walker as a fast-food employee and Dowd as her manager, who is tricked by a prankster over the phone into cruelly tormenting the employee. Dowd’s performance was acclaimed, but its distributor,...

‘Handmaid’s Tale’ Star Ann Dowd on Her Solo Turn in Adaptation of Henrik Ibsen’s ‘Enemy of the People’
Image
In person, Ann Dowd, sweet, solicitous and ready to laugh at herself, is far removed from Gilead, the totalitarian state where Aunt Lydia, her alter ego on “The Handmaid’s Tale,” rules with an iron fist, doling out punishment for the slightest infraction. As she sips a cappuccino and raises her voice ever so slightly to compete with the whooshing sounds of a nearby subway or a fire truck’s siren, she confesses that she wonders why she agreed to tackle her next acting challenge. Dowd, you see, is about to launch a sold-out solo version of “Enemy of the People,” a production that will see the actor assume all the roles in Henrik Ibsen’s morality tale. Moreover, she’ll bring the story — about a town doctor who risks everything to expose a scandal involving contaminated water — to life in the Park Avenue Armory, a cavernous space that dwarfs even the largest Broadway venue.
