Forlini's, as the title of the episode references, was an Italian restaurant in Manhattan located on 93 Baxter Street, which served as an occasional filming location for SVU and various other shows. It closed its doors for good on April 1, 2022 after 79 years. Including this episode, Forlini's was used as a shooting location (according to scene cards) in several other episodes. These include: Padre Sandunguero (2015) (S16E12), Know It All (2017) (S18E15), and In Loco Parentis (2018) (S19E15).
This is the last episode in which Warren Leight serves as executive producer/showrunner. This marks Leight's second departure from the series, having previously left after season seventeen before returning in season twenty-one.
Tau proteins are a group of six different highly soluble protein types that play an important role in maintaining the stability of the walls of axons, an axon is a long nerve fiber that connects one neuron to another and carries nerve impulses. When the brain is damaged, either through diseases like Alzheimer's or Parkinson's or through traumatic brain injuries like repeated concussions, tau proteins become insoluble (they do not break down properly when the axon cells die) and become toxic to nerve cells, causing the nerve fibers of the axon to become tangled and filled up with damaged cells, similar to cancer cells. When toxic tau proteins build up they start to cause serious, irreparable brain damage. Alzheimer's disease is thought to be the result of tau protein build up due to genetic defects that result from the aging process which cause the brain to create damaged tau proteins. Tau protein build up from repeated traumatic brain injuries like concussions, most commonly seen in long-time players of contact sports like football and hockey, can lead to a condition called CTE (Chronic traumatic encephalopathy). CTE is the result of brain damage caused by repeated trauma to the head that causes tau proteins to accumulate, causing further brain damage; symptoms include severe headaches, changes in behavior, mood problems, trouble thinking, memory loss, loss of inhibitions and eventually dementia and death.
At the beginning, Velasco asks Carisi when he knew Rollins was "the one." Carisi replies by saying it was watching her deal with the complications of giving birth to her first daughter, Jesse Rollins, which happened in the episode Depravity Standard (2015).
