Father, mother and their murdering offspring

This is a 90-minute television movie from over 3 years ago. Lead actors Ferch and Bodenbender play parents of a boy who killed several people and they got some awards recognition for their performances. There are several questions the viewer asks himself as this movie goes on. Was the son a hostage too. Will he be rehabilitated in the end? The answer to both questions is no as we find out when the gun powder residues are analyzed. Thumbs up for the filmmakers here for being bold enough to put all the blame on the boy and not giving this a feel-good ending, even if the way he takes the blame from his parents in the end is not that bad actually.

The film is written and directed by Niki Stein, a prolific German crime movie director. He worked on several "Tatort" episodes for example. Guilt is a core issue in this film and there is even a little gun control references. I have to say I am not the biggest fan of Heino Ferch and there is no doubt he frequently plays the same characters in his films, but here he delivers a quietly convincing portrayal. The third biggest character is played by Katharina Wackernagel, but she really plays a bit of a nothing character here, adds nothing for me. Her presence in the second half also lets me believe that the first half of the film is actually better. The film's title is a play on word on the common mention of "Father, Mother and Child", only that "child" here is replaces by "murderer". A bit too baity perhaps, but not a bad title altogether. It's a pretty decent movie and I recommend it.
