- Patrick Jane: Prosecutor says that Timothy Carter wasn't Red John. Well... Carter told me himself that he was Red John, but I... I can't prove that. The forensic evidence is inconclusive, his wife refuses to talk to anyone, refuses to speak at all, so she's no use to us. What about Carter's records? Surely there must be some clues there. No. On paper, this man seems to appear out of nowhere five years ago. Before that, nothing. Why? Because Timothy Carter is an invented identity, a mask. I'm not guilty of killing Timothy Carter because Timothy Carter never existed. There is no Timothy Carter. There is only Red John. Red John started killing people twelve years ago. It's hard to put an exact number on how many people he's killed, but it's somewhere around 28. Nearly all women, late at night, in their homes. He wakes them first because he likes to see the fear in their eyes. He likes to hear them beg for mercy as he cuts them open. He did that to my wife and daughter, and I've been looking for him ever since. Looking for personal vengeance. I believe that's... my right. I have the right to kill the man that killed my family. I don't say I shouldn't be punished for doing what I did, I feel I had no choice. What would you do?
- Teresa Lisbon: Maybe if we're lucky, he'll get second degree murder. Jane will be out of prison in 3 or 4 years.
- Bailiff: Court is back in session.
- Teresa Lisbon: The jury's back already? That can't be good.
- [last lines]
- Teresa Lisbon: You got your vengeance. You feel different? You feel better?
- Patrick Jane: No. I feel guilty.
- Teresa Lisbon: Guilty? Why?
- Patrick Jane: For deceiving the jury. I mean I had no choice going to jail would've been a victory for Red John.
- Teresa Lisbon: What do you mean? Red John's dead.
- Patrick Jane: Timothy Carter is dead. He was an evil man. But he was not Red John. Red John... is still alive.
- [Lisbon stares at Jane, and car horns honk]
- Patrick Jane: Watch the road.
- Det. Wade: Yeah, but the problem is, Jane, the man you killed, his name is Timothy Carter. Well respected local business man, a devoted husband, and father with no criminal record.
- Patrick Jane: No, that's incorrect...
- Det. Wade: Wait a minute. Let me finish. Now we already looked at his cell. I got the details right here. He logged zero calls from this O'Laughlin. None... And guess what else?... He didn't have a gun on him.
- Patrick Jane: No gun?
- Det. Wade: No gun.
- Det. Miller: So you see how this doesn't look good.
- Det. Wade: Looks like either you're telling us both a pack of lies, or you went crazy and killed an innocent man.
- D.A. Osvaldo Ardiles: Just to save time here, I'm sorry but I can't cut your man, Jane, any slack on bail.
- Gale Bertram: No. No. No. I don't want you to. No, on the contrary. I want you to make sure he stays locked up as long as possible.
- D.A. Osvaldo Ardiles: Okay, he's your man.
- Gale Bertram: Don't get me wrong. It's heartbreaking when a good man, a productive employee like Jane goes down in flames. But this is about damage control now. We need to make sure that he is safely out of the way until this media crapstorm passes.
- Patrick Jane: I didn't go nuts.
- Teresa Lisbon: I believe you. I'm not sure a jury will.
- Patrick Jane: Yeah, well that is a problem. I did what I had to do, and I will live with the consequences.
- Wayne Rigsby: How you doing? You good?
- Grace Van Pelt: Yeah, I'm fine.
- Kimball Cho: Two days ago, you shot and killed your fiancée. You can't be fine.
- Security Guard: Uh, I need to see the warrant first though. It's uh, it's protocol.
- Kimball Cho: There is no warrant. Ask me why.
- Security Guard: Why?
- Kimball Cho: Because every member of our unit is suspended because of this killing here and two other people we killed this week.
- Security Guard: Wow. That's a rough week. I guess I can... run you off a copy.
- Patrick Jane: Question: do you trust me?
- Teresa Lisbon: Not one hundred percent, no.
- Patrick Jane: Different question, then: could you stop right here?
- Teresa Lisbon: Somehow I don't think she's not gonna wanna talk with you.
- Patrick Jane: Really?
- Teresa Lisbon: You killed her husband.
- Patrick Jane: Well, there you go. The ice is broken. We have something to talk about.
- Gale Bertram: Listen this girl in the basement changes the game. We can't appear vindictive. Jane has an enormous amount of public sympathy right now.
- D.A. Osvaldo Ardiles: D.A. has told me to go full speed at him. Vigilante justice can't go unpunished no matter what the sympathetic circumstances might be.
- Gale Bertram: Oh no. No. Absolutely. A firm line drawn under the episode is best for the bureau. It's best for all concerned. I'm just saying that... no death penalty, right?
- D.A. Osvaldo Ardiles: No. that's out now. We are confident that first degree murder will stand up. The facts don't allow for any other verdict.
