Box Office – Tabu, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Kriti Sanon’s Crew is amongst Top-10 female centric films after Week One ( Photo Credit – YouTube )
Crew continues to be in the record books after spending one week in theatres. It had a really good opening when it started in double digits, and then that stayed on to be the case for rest of the weekend as well when more than 10 crores kept coming in. Though Monday hold was quite good, there were steady numbers that kept coming between Tuesday to Thursday. That said, the drops were there and while they were not drastic, they were negligible. As a result, the Crew has to now contend with being in the Top-10 instead of being in the top 5.
Here Are the Week One/first 7 day numbers of the Top-10 Female-Centric Films: The Kerala Story – 81.07 crores Gangubai Kathiawadi – 68.93 crores Manikarnika – The Queen of Jhansi – 61.15 crores Veere Di Wedding...

Box Office – Tabu, Kareena, Kriti’s Crew is amongst Top-5 biggest weekend openers for a female centric film, edges past Alia Bhatt’s Dear Zindagi ( Photo Credit – Instagram; iMDb )
Tabu, Kareena Kapoor and Kriti Sanon have done it. Their film has gone beyond just the opening day bonanza and has now done consistently well right through the weekend as well. It has been a bountiful score for the film, allowing it to find a place amongst the Top-5 weekend openers of all time. Interestingly, three out of these have come post-pandemic – Gangubai Kathiawadi, The Kerala Story, and Crew, each of which belongs to a different genre. That said, while the first two in the list are hard-hitting dramas, its Crew, which is light-hearted.
In fact, there is more. If one looks at the entire Top 10, then it’s only Crew and Veere Di Wedding which are light-hearted whereas the remaining eight all are drama.

New Delhi, Feb 4 (Ians) The Indian diaspora spread all over the world has mostly stayed connected to its roots. And one of the institutions that keeps this connection alive is Indian cinema. These films could be in Hindi or in any of the South Indian languages.
The Indian film market is spread far and wide, but Indian films also have to conform to the local culture and sensibilities, mainly of the religious kind. We do not make films that are against any other country or its culture, but when it comes to religious sentiments, considering the mixed population we have, Indian films feature characters from different religious backgrounds. Yet, Indian films cannot always please all people.
Almost all countries exhibiting films have their own censorship bodies. It is also not uncommon for them to occasionally ban films from theatrical release. The reason could be a vulgarity, nudity or religious sentiments being hurt.

Dunki Box Office Collection Day 11 Updates ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
After a wait of a couple of days, Dunki got into double digits all over again. It was expected that the 10 crores mark would be crossed on Saturday at least, if not Friday. However, the film missed that by just a few lakhs, as 9.92 crores had come in. However, finally, it did happen on Sunday, though, with 11.25 crores* being collected.
Again, the growth is limited, but then that’s on expected lines. Moreover, the fact remains that at the end of the day, Dunki is still collecting, and that’s what matters when the response is mixed. It’s about taking the film as far ahead of the 200 crores mark and that’s where at least a small win lies. There have been instances in the past when a film has just not managed to do well after a mixed start,...

Mumbai, Feb 19: Bollywood Czarina Ekta Kapoor, who has successfully tapped the domains of film, TV and Ott, says in most countries, sexuality of a woman is considered a sin.
It is a conscious decision on her part to push strong women-centric stories such as 'Lipstick Under My Burkha', 'The Dirty Picture' and 'Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitaare', she adds.
"It is a conscious decision. In most of the countries, the sexuality of a woman is considered as sin. That's a big problem and I was told many times that I was a big part of that journey - by showcasing women wearing sarees and sindoor (on her TV shows). I have somehow stunted the growth of women in this country. I don't agree to this because I felt that a woman in a saree is a choice, as a woman in a swimsuit," says Ekta.

Tusshar Kapoor kicked off his acting journey in 2001 with the box office super hit Mujhe Kucch Kehna Hai and has had an illustrious career ever since. Having done films of various genres like horror, romance, drama and comedy, he was appreciated immensely for his performances in Khakee, The Dirty Picture, Shootout at lokhandwala and Shor in the City, among others.
However, it was his impeccable comic timing as a mute character in the blockbuster comic franchise Golmaal, that made him a household name and a favourite among kids and families. Tusshar has always pushed the envelope and reinvented himself with challenging roles and characters. More recently, after completing 20 years in the film industry, the actor donned the hat of a producer with the horror-comedy Laxmii, headlined by superstar Akshay Kumar and Kiara Advani. Over the 21st century, Bollywood cinema has entered into a completely different era of filmmaking and storytelling than was being made in the decades prior. Actors and directors who started their careers in the ‘80s and ‘90s have experienced such a drastic shift from their beginnings to what they are doing now that their older works seem almost archaic and unrecognizable. This has led, expectedly, to many of Bollywood’s artists making self-reflexive work that also reflects on the industry in general––Fan, Sanju, The Dirty Picture, Luck By Chance, and Shamitabh are just a few examples. EntertainmentSome of these films have retained the origins of the character though the language is Hindi while others have completely changed their identity. Tnm StaffThe newly released biopic Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl has opened to good reviews but has also snowballed into a controversy for supposedly distorting facts about the Indian Air Force. More importantly, the film does not show Iaf pilot Sreevidya Rajan from Kerala, who also served in the Kargil war with Gunjan. Sreevidya has, in fact, said that she was the first woman Iaf officer to fly in a combat zone and not Gunjan as the film suggests. Though the makers have said that the film is a fictionalised account, it has drawn sharp criticism for these departures. While Bollywood has made several biopics and films based on real life incidents, the southern industries are slowly catching up with the trend. Perhaps in future, south Indian...

TollywoodWhen Keerthy was signed for the film, she was trolled on social media but the actor has more than proved herself.Sowmya RajendranMahanati, released on May 9, has gone on to charm audiences and win critical acclaim. And rightly so. Films centered around women characters in south Indian film industries are a rarity, especially big budget flicks. Produced by Vyjayanthi Movies, Mahanati springs a surprise in how expansive the team has been in covering the life of one of India's most-loved women actors. The attention to detail and the pains taken to reconstruct a bygone era are apparent in every frame of Mahanati. Certainly, the film does gloss over some aspects of Savitri's life. The abusive relationship and turbulent marriage that she shared with Gemini Ganesan, another popular star at the time, is not depicted in its entirety. Although the film does not shy away from positioning him as the cause for her spiraling into depression and self-destruction, Gemini Ganesan still gets a somewhat sympathetic treatment. For instance, there are no scenes which depict the physical violence to which he is said to have subjected her. And in the end, we're led to believe he still cared. But, in the interest of authenticity, capturing all of those humiliating moments may have crossed over to voyeurism, stripping away the dignity of a star who still continues to move audiences. Much of the credit for Mahanati's success and its emotional appeal must go to Keerthy Suresh, an unlikely choice for such a heavyweight role. The actor has confessed that she was hesitant to take up the film. Looking at her career so far, Keerthy has not really shown any signs that she's capable of essaying such a demanding character. Playing a real life person is always challenging. The actor has to look the part, down to the last detail. For instance, although Vidya Balan won the National Award for The Dirty Picture, many from the south said that she did not look at all like Silk Smitha. Manju Warrier, another acting powerhouse, was criticised for her portrayal of writer Madhavi Kutty in Aami. Priyanka Chopra, too, came under flak for playing Mary Kom, a North-Eastern sportswoman. Keerthy Suresh's filmography is nowhere close to the success that these women actors have had. Nithya Menen was the original choice for the film and when she was replaced by Keerthy Suresh, the latter was subjected to quite a bit of social media trolling. How could an actor, who has largely been relegated to playing "cute" and "bubbly" roles, pull off a stalwart like Savitri? That too, in a biopic which would require the actor to depict the same character at different ages? The choice was all the more incongruous because Savitri belonged to an era where women actors had more to do on screen than look pretty, while Keerthy Suresh symbolises contemporary times when the heroine in the Tamil and Telugu industries is little more than a distraction. Savitri, moreover, was not an ordinary actor - people still rave about her performance in films like Mayabazar, Pasamalar and more. With her expressive face, dancing skills, and ability to steal the scene from under the nose of accomplished male actors, Savitri was a giant and Keerthy Suresh seemed too puny in stature to fill in her shoes. Indeed, the wide-eyed and naive adolescent Savitri that Keerthy Suresh portrays in Mahanati is how she has been playing adult women characters for the most part - Thodari and Remo, for instance. In star vehicles like Bairavaa and the more recent Thaana Serntha Koottam, she has been happy to play second fiddle to the hero. While she looked fresh in Rajini Murugan, the role of an uninterested woman pursued relentlessly by the hero was hardly new. In Mahanati, however, Keerthy has proved her mettle. As the teen Savitri, her interpretation could perhaps have been better. It's more of the "bubbly girl" than what an actual 14-15 year old is like. However, as the film progresses and as Savitri grows older, wiser, and heartbroken, Keerthy is exceptional. The first time we see her on screen is at a film set. The glycerin bottle has been broken by accident and the irate director decides to cancel the shoot because he wants his actor (Savitri) to not just cry...but cry from only one eye. Savitri, however, is unfazed. She not only asserts that she can do it, she also asks him how many tears she should shed. And she does what is required in a single take. The confidence the actor had in herself, despite her numerous insecurities, is portrayed beautifully by Keerthy. In some scenes, she is assertive and queen-like - as in the scene when she participates in an audacious car race and wins. In others, you can feel her trembling heart, the deep pain, and melancholy she carries within her - for instance, when she travels to see the photograph of her father of whom she has no memories, only to be disappointed. There's also the scene when she lets out a guttural, animal cry, as she discovers Gemini Ganesan's infidelity, even as those around her are celebrating her success. Keerthy Suresh appears to have lived as Savitri, the woman, if not the actor, during the shoot of the film. The betrayals, frustrations, and the generosity bordering on foolishness that Savitri was known for, come to us without turning melodramatic. Savitri's story is not really unique - film industries are full of tragic women characters who've been exploited by the men around them, for their bodies, wealth and legacy. What's different about Mahanati, is that despite her failures and flaws, the film projects her as an inspiring figure. Let that sink in for a moment - here is a woman, who married a twice-married man, turned into an alcoholic, and even neglected her children, being portrayed as a role model for other women. That's pretty unthinkable in any other mainstream film where such a woman character would have been relentlessly derided. In Mahanati, however, director Nag Ashwin has chosen to add the story of a woman journalist (Vani, played by Samantha), who takes charge of her life after working on a story about Savitri. The portion when a tearful Vani visits Savitri in the hospital is among the most moving scenes in the film. Samantha, like Keerthy Suresh, has largely been stuck doing decorative roles. But in this particular scene, she too seems to have been consumed by Savitri's real life story, much like Keerthy. Vani, who stutters, cannot kickstart her father's Luna in the first attempt, and is a bit of a joke to her editor at her workplace, seems to be the antithesis of 'first take' Savitri. But the young journalist transforms in the course of narrating Savitri's story, succeeding in starting the two-wheeler in the first attempt as she flies towards her freedom. One wonders if it would have been a stronger statement if Vani had decided to move on from her former boyfriend Antony (Vijay Devarakonda), instead of attempting to break up what she thinks is his engagement ceremony as she sets off on the Luna. After all, considering the man trouble Savitri had, this might have made more sense. But then, this is set in the early '80s, and a woman choosing a man from another faith for passion is emancipation enough, one supposes. At least, Antony is mindful of Vani and her choices. Mahanati will be a much talked about film in the history of Telugu cinema. It will be discussed for the exceptional performances of actors like Dulquer Salmaan (who has played Gemini Ganesan), for the costumes and wonderful detailing in the sets, for the impressive cinematography, for the delight of watching old Tamil and Telugu films recreated with respect. And of course, the able direction. But most of all, it will be talked about because of Keerthy Suresh and her commitment towards bringing to life a tragic figure with sensitivity and passion. By the end of the film, we see Savitri and not Keerthy, and that's no mean accomplishment for any nati. Here's hoping Keerthy makes better film choices in future. After Mahanati, it would be a terrible tragedy if she were to go back to lisping lines and making cute faces.

Shortly after completing the shoot of Tumhari Sulu, Neha Dhupia, who plays Maria, Sulu’s radio boss, invited her co-star and new friend, Vidya Balan on her much – discussed celebrity show, “No Filter Neha”.
The conversation between the two was as fun, no-holds barred and uncensored as it could get.
When asked if a “shaadi” had any “side effects”, Vidya said, “I don’t think I’ve experienced any. My name did not change. I didn’t let it. My address changed, for the better. I’d never lived with anyone before so I wondered how it would be to share the same space, but we’re quite alike, so it’s fun.”
Years back, when Vidya had No One Killed Jessica, The Dirty Picture and Kahaani, she was called a Khan. She laughed, “At a press conference after The Dirty Picture Ekta (Kapoor) called me Vidya Balan Khan and that became a thing.
The conversation between the two was as fun, no-holds barred and uncensored as it could get.

Baadshaho
Starring Ajay Devgan, Emraan Hashmi, Sanjay Mishra, Ileana d’Cruz, Esha Gupta, Vidyut Jamwal
Directed by Milan Luthria
If you are looking for a film that is unintentionally funny because it takes itself so seriously you would think the end-result would be a heist film on a par with Vijay Anand’s Jewel Thief or at least Milan Luthria’s Kachche Dhaage, then look again.
This is no Oceans 11. Baadshaho is a class apart. Seldom have I come cross a screenplay so absurd and bombastic it qualifies among the most deplorably written feasts of fatuousness in recent times. Making it worse are the performance. So pretentious and hammy are the actors it would be an insult to good taste to call them actors.
Topping the list of performing travesties is Ileana D’Cruz. Playing what looks like a Gayatri Devi lookalike she gives what could possibly rank among the...

Vidya Balan is anything but conventional, shattering glass ceilings and breaking stereotypes – She was the first female star from Bollywood to proudly shoulder a woman-centric film and rewrote history with the blockbuster The Dirty Picture.
Having headlined several game changing films for women stars in movies including Ishqya and the Kahaani franchise , the actress who has dared to be different and stuck to her roots, has always been a favorite while studying how the Contemporary Female Star in Bollywood has shaped aspirations for the New Indian Woman.
Tupur Chatterjee of the University of Texas at Austin Department of Radio-Television-Film, United States recently wrote a piece addressing the subject as part of Synoptique, a special selection of texts that addressed questions of “national” Indian cinema within the context of art film circuits and transnational/national/regional film industries, celebrated film cultures and the (re) discovery of forgotten ones.

Trust Milan Luthria to surprise Emraan Hashmi’s fans with a distinct look in each of their films together, be it Once Upon A Time or The Dirty Picture. And his look in the upcoming Baadshaho too is something that will take the audience by surprise.
Emraan’s character is a vagabond, street smart Rajasthani who has a penchant for taking clothes and accessories from foreign tourists. And hence his look in the film is a combination of boots, chaps styled trousers, a heart shaped buckle & sleeveless T-shirts with quirky one liners and sleeveless denim jackets. Not just that, he had to vigorously work out for three months to get into shape for his ripped look in the film!
Since he plays a funky twisted character, the designing team nicknamed him “the guns and roses badass” As far his hairstyle is concerned, Milan went one step further than Ouatim and...
