The final season may have concluded in 2022 but the BBC isn’t letting go of legal drama The Split just yet, with a Barcelona-set special greenlit three months after a Manchester spin off.
Abi Morgan’s show ended in 2022 after three seasons but the BBC has since ordered The Split Up in February and is now heading to Spain for a two-parter with Nicola Walker’s Hannah and family, while Toby Stephens is set to join the cast.
In the special, the Defoes are back and have gathered for a beautiful wedding at a vineyard, nestled in Catalonia’s wine region. Set across one sun soaked weekend, The Split special will encompass break-ups, reunions and plenty romance.
Stephens will play new character Archie Moore, while most of the original cast are set to return.

The current category champ, “The Bear,” is looking to become the 10th series to win this award for both of its first two seasons. It would join “The Phil Silvers Show,” “All in the Family,” “Taxi,” “Cheers,” “The Golden Girls,” “Frasier,” “30 Rock,” “Modern Family,” and “Ted Lasso” on this honor roll.
Of the seven other 2023 Best Comedy Series nominees, only “Abbott Elementary” and “Only Murders in the Building” are eligible to contend again. “Barry” and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” officially concluded in spring 2023, while the futures of both “Jury Duty” and “Ted Lasso” remain uncertain. That leaves “Wednesday,” the confirmed second season of which will not air in time to qualify for consideration.

Having established herself at the BBC with the police procedural “Happy Valley” and the crossdressing costume drama “Gentleman Jack,” screenwriter-turned-showrunner Sally Wainwright has followed countless creatives and taken the Disney shilling to initiate her latest project. You can hardly blame her, given the reduced offer the cash-strapped British broadcaster is now extending even to its more illustrious dramaturges: rarely more than three episodes per series and four characters per scene. Imposed by post-Brexit belt-tightening, this sorry set of limitations has exasperated those obliged to work within them while dispiriting viewers, left watching the life — and the talent — drain from primetime broadcasts.
Mashing up historical and fantastical elements, the pricey-looking, eight-part “Renegade Nell” rides into a surprisingly crowded field for light period entertainments straddling the Stuart and Georgian eras, emerging after the sadly short-lived BBC comedy “The Witchfinder” and Apple TV+’s recent “The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin.” While...

Noel Fielding Talks His New Apple TV+ Comedy Dick Turpin — and If Baking Show Fans Will Get the Joke
Millions of The Great British Baking Show’s fans might not know it, but Noel Fielding is very funny outside the tent, too.
Before taking over as co-host of Netflix’s supremely cozy UK baking competition in 2017, Fielding was best known for starring in The Mighty Boosh, a wildly surreal sitcom that became a cult hit during its 2004-07 run on BBC Three. Now two decades later, Fielding is returning to TV comedy with a new Apple TV+ series, The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin (premiering this Friday on the streamer), with Fielding playing an easygoing misfit who accidentally...

Does the Television Critics Association’s semi-annual press tour still hold value?
That topic was a frequent debate at the Langham Hotel in Pasadena, California, where the TCA winter press tour wrapped Thursday after two weeks and a dizzying number of panels featuring stars, producers and the occasional executive.
TCA can still bring out the big stars (Apple had Michael Douglas, Hulu delivered Jon Bon Jovi, and Annette Bening and Snoop Dogg were highlights at NBCU) but the real value — aside from showcasing programming to a shrinking press corps that has been overwhelmed by Peak TV — comes from executive sessions that can help lay out a platform strategy that many will cover for months on end.
Before we get into the biggest takeaways from TCA, allow us to make an appeal to Netflix, Amazon, Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount Global to return to press tour. Yes, we know it’s...

"There's only one man brainless enough to steal from the syndicate." Apple TV has revealed the official trailer for a kooky British comedy series titled The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin, which is actually based on a true story. Sort of. Noel Fielding is Dick Turpin, the most dangerous highway robber of the 18th century. The comedy series arrives for streaming starting on March 1st. It is a fictional take on the life of highway robber Dick Turpin – originally Richard Turpin, an English highwayman whose exploits were romanticised following his execution in York for horse theft. By the early 1730s, he had joined a gang of deer thieves and, later, became a poacher, burglar, horse thief and killer. This is his story. Though it's all made up, at least most of it is. Co-starring alongside Fielding in the ensemble cast are Ellie White, Marc Wootton, Duayne Boachie, Hugh Bonneville,...
