Ed Sheeran may be BFFs with Taylor Swift, but it seems like he's also friends with everyone else. From his early friendships with Courteney Cox and Jennifer Aniston to his more recent relationship with The Weeknd, the "Shape of You" singer has no shortage of celebrity pals. Sadly, he's also lost a few friends on his road to stardom. In the March issue of Rolling Stone magazine, the British crooner blamed the Forbes list for "f*cking it up." "I was getting texts from people with pictures of cars going, 'I'd like this for my birthday, please. This one's only .06 percent of your annual income,'" he said, referring to when they reported that he made $57 million in 2015. Still, something tells us Ed is doing just fine. This first feature of Kirsten Tan premiered in Sundance ‘17 World Cinema Dramatic Competition. Its provenance is Singapore but it takes place in Thailand. It continued onward to the Hivos Tiger Competition at Iffr (R’dam).
The thrill of interviewing here in Sundance is that you see a film; you have an impression and while it is still fresh you meet the filmmakers without having much time for any research or reflection. And then you get to see them again as “old friends” when you meet again in Rotterdam.
As Kirsten, her producer Weijie Lai and I sat down at the Sundance Co-op on Main Street here in Park City, I really had little idea of where the interview would take us, somewhat analogously to her film in which an architect, disenchanted with life in general, being put aside as “old” in his own highly successful architectural firm and in a stale relationship with his wife,...

Now well into its second decade, the Slamdance Film Festival is gearing up for its 2017 edition. Mostly taking place at the Treasure Mountain Inn at top of Park City, Utah’s busting Main Street, Slamdance is dedicated to presenting a festival and a community designed “for filmmakers by filmmakers.”
In previous years, projects from directors like Christopher Nolan, Marc Forster, Jared Hess, Oren Peli, Benh Zeitlin, Seth Gordon, Lynn Shelton and Lena Dunham have bowed at the festival, and it’s become a fertile — if offbeat — proving ground for fresh talents. This year looks to be yet another banner one for the fest, and as such, we’ve gone on a little trip through the Slamdance slate to dig up some prime possibilities for must-see films (shorts and features!).

Stephen Elliott is an author, filmmaker, and founding editor of the respected literary web site, The Rumpus. He co-wrote and directed the James Franco-starring About Cherry, which premiered at The Berlin International Film Festival in 2012 before screening at other festivals. Life on "The Blacklist" is good, if you ask Megan Boone.
And how could it not be? NBC's Monday crime drama is one of the season's new hits, with strong ratings (including those from post-broadcast DVR viewings, where the show has set a couple of records) and positive reviews ... and a breakout star in Boone as novice FBI profiler Elizabeth Keen, who's drawing interest and information from enigmatic ex-fugitive Raymond "Red" Reddington (James Spader).
"I was so elated," Boone tells Zap2it of learning she'd be teamed with Spader, since she was cast for "The Blacklist" first. "He often believes in me more than I believe in myself. I'm expected to carry the show with him, and at first, that was really a daunting task.

Back when Slumdog Millionaire came out and charmed audiences and critics alike, I thought Dev Patel’s career looked promising. Even though he hasn’t quite prospered in the industry as I hoped he would (presumably thanks to his subpar performances in M. Night Shyamalan’s potentially career-ending film The Last Airbender and the critically panned About Cherry), the British actor managed to score a role in HBO’s popular show The Newsroom, where he plays Neal Sampat. But now it seems he has caught the eye of renowned directors once again, as he’s reportedly in talks to star in Elysium director Neill Blomkamp’s sci-fi comedy Chappie.
The movie’s based on the South African director’s short film Terta Vaal, which (sort of) advertises a team of robots that helps police deal with slums around the globe. Sharlto Copley (naturally) has already been announced to star as...

James Franco turned 35 on April 19 -- he even blogged about it for HuffPost Entertainment-- but he waited until he was in Miami this past weekend to celebrate with a cake that mirrors several of his latest films.
On Monday, Franco posted a photo of an S&M-themed birthday cake -- complete with a dildo, ball gag, whip and anal beads, and his name, all made out of icing -- to his WhoSay account.
Of course, we say the cake is fitting since it's reflective of Franco's recent projects. In the past year, the actor appeared in "About Cherry," a film about a girl entering the world of Bdsm porn; he produced a documentary called "Kink," which looks at the world's largest fetish website; and he directed/starred in "Interior Leather Bar," which re-imagines the lost 40 minutes from the 1980s film "Cruising," about a serial killer targeting gay men on the S&M scene.

The documentary kink, premiering at this week’s Sundance Film Festival and produced by James Franco, takes a bird’s eye look at San Francisco-based major Bdsm internet porn company Kink.com, and doesn’t wince.
Directed by Franco’s longtime cinematographer Christina Voros, the movie completely revels in a world where ropes and bondage are joyful ways of expressing lust — and we’re talking way more “discipline” than Fifty Shades of Grey. Check out our exclusive premiere of the movie’s trailer below. But be warned, faint-of-heart readers: It’s stuffed with footage of buff guys getting trussed up...

Stephen Elliott.s directorial debut, About Cherry, tackled some oddball subject matter, delving into the world of the porn industry and one young girl.s entrance into that field. The film premiered at the 2012 Berlin International Film Festival to little acclaim, but if a skin flick with a likeable protagonist seems up your alley, About Cherry will be available on Blu-ray and DVD beginning on January 15, 2013. About Cherry stars Ashley Hinshaw as an 18-year-old who sells some naked photos to make it to San Francisco, where she ends up getting into the pornography industry and dating an attorney who just so happens to have a coke addiction. The ambling story also stars such random actors as James Franco, Dev Patel, and Heather Graham. Despite the talent involved, the flick was only released in three theaters for a grand total of one week, so the DVD and Blu-ray release will probably...

Ahh, the year in skin.
It's not the golden "Deep Throat" years of the '70s anymore, it's the age of the Internet and no one really goes to the movies to see nudity, but women proved they were hungry for some beefcake with the wild success of "Magic Mike." Meanwhile, A-list actresses bared it all for some compelling reasons that were absolutely integral to the script… hehe.
Here's our comprehensive list of major celebs who got in the buff so perverts could post screengrabs on Internet forums.

A couple of weeks ago we selected Stephen Elliott’s Happy Baby for our curated Kickstarter page, and since then he’s been adding a number of provocative awards to the campaign. The most interesting was added today: for $6,000, Elliott will transfer to you his relationship with the actor and director James Franco, who starred in his feature About Cherry and owns the rights to his novel The Adderall Diaries. Muses Elliott, “What does that mean?” “I’m not really sure,” he continues. “I can’t promise anything from James, but I’ll send you a notarized document transferring full ownership.” Memorializing and transferring …...

Author Stephen Elliott (The Adderall Diaries) founded the culture website The Rumpus and recently directed his first feature, About Cherry. He’s launched a Kickstarter campaign for his second, Happy Baby, an adaptation of his 2004 autobiographical novel. The below is excerpted from Elliott’s Daily Rumpus newsletter, which, as a newsletter writer myself, I highly recommend. — Sm
Someone asked yesterday why I was doing a Kickstarter for my movie. He said he would donate $5, he doesn’t have very much money (which is fine), but he wanted to know why I needed you (he said, “Why do you need us?”). Was it because I wanted the movie to be completely grassroots, or because I needed complete control? Or could I not get the bigshots to give me money and let me keep director’s cut, or whatever. He said he didn’t know much about making movies but wanted to know what was the deal.

You may recognize Jonny Weston as one of the zombies in "John Dies at the End" or as the ex-boyfriend of an up-and-coming porn star in "About Cherry," but the 24-year-old is making big waves this weekend with his first leading role.
In the biopic "Chasing Mavericks," Weston plays surf legend Jay Moriarty. At the young age of 16, Moriarty became infamous for riding the Mavericks in Santa Cruz, Calif., one of the world's most dangerous surfing destinations. Weston has more than just the blonde, blue-eyed good looks and acting chops to portray Moriarty — he also happens to be an avid surfer with all the right skills for the part.
We had the chance to chat with Weston about his breakout role in "Chasing Mavericks" as well as his board-riding skills and audition experiences while paving the way to Hollywood.

At an Austin Film Festival panel discussion on Friday afternoon, James Franco revealed how Paul Thomas Anderson courted him for the role of Freddie Quell, since brought to vivid life by Joaquin Phoenix, in The Master. The actor-director-hyphenate extraordinaire was in town to present Francophrenia, his experimental documentary about his time playing the smirking villain Franco on the ABC soap opera General Hospital.
Towards the end of the 75-minute conversation, an audience member asked Franco to discuss a specific movie role on his resume that had initially intimidated him. Franco couldn’t really think of one, which reminded him of a funny story.

Chicago – Stephen Elliott’s “About Cherry” takes what could have been an interesting journey into the porn industry and turns it into what is essentially a TV-Movie-of-the-Week without the rating restrictions of the Lifetime Channel.
