Zooey Deschanel and her camera presence
yatinsrivastava30 November 2018
Zooey Deschanel is the best part of the show. Her screen presence is superb. Am totally digging it, the pilot episode gets a little sluggish in the middle but picks up right at end,and you can't help but fall in love with these characters and the camaraderie they share.

Setting the tone
JSirro19 April 2021
Knowing how funny the show is after watching it through, this episode sets the scene for exactly what to expect from the show. The two mayor differences is the role Coach plays in this episode, considering they replace him in a sense with Winston. Also Schmidt comes off a lot different then he does in the remainder of the show.

Everything from Jess walking in on her boyfriend, to Dirty Dancing and the friendship this show packs the punch of the feel god comedy in the Pilot episode.

Overall: 7.8.

The epitome of quirky
metromm21 September 2011
Since I've only viewed one episode, I can't comment on the likelihood of the future success of this new series. But if the next episode is as quirky and laugh-out-loud funny as the first, then I'm hooked. I found the premise of the show to be refreshingly different (and at age 63 and being a big TV sitcom fan, I've seen lots.) And then there's Zooey Deschanel. She not only does not disappoint, she reaches new comedic highs in this role that is tailor-made for her special brand of quirkiness. The chemistry between these young actors cooked up well in only 30 minutes. Hats off to all of the fine cast members. This episode had an ending I won't soon forget and each time I remember it, I will be laughing out loud. Bring it on! Bravo!! Encore!!!

a good pilot
monaimdb30 June 2021
My review may be a little biased since i have watched about 5 of the episodes in season 2 before, which made me like this show and want to watch it from the start.

As a pilot, i think it fulfils its job - introduces the characters, shows us the "world", has a good plot and jokes. I've never seen any of Zooey Deschanel's works before but from what i see in this show, she's fantastic at the role. I love her character and what it brings to the show. The other characters each also has their unique personalities, and is used well for comedic effects and plots. It makes me want to watch the next episode to find out more and that's enough for me to make it a good pilot.

will wait and see

I really wanted to like this show more. It seemed like the perfect lead-in for Raising Hope, which is one of my favorite comedies. Maybe it was the fact that the funniest parts had been shown repeatedly in promotions, or maybe it was the anticipation of Zooey Deschanel being on television, but in the end I felt like the show did not live up to my expectations. The pilot episode came off as mediocre at best.

The character Zooey Deschanel portrayed is not unlike ones she has played in movies, which is certainly its redeeming quality. The three male characters are pretty interesting, my only concern is that one or more of them may be too stereotypical. The end of the episode seemed a little predictable and the genuineness of the characters was rather unconvincing - more to do with the writing than the acting, but it's understandable that it's difficult to complete a story in such a short period of time.

I think this episode shows that the series has some promise and I will watch it again next week.

Reviews Of Unusual Size!

Re: A newly single girl in the city moves in with three young men. There, she sings her own theme song, watches Dirty Dancing and other quirky things people do on TV shows.

Outstanding: Zooey is so darn cute!

Unacceptable: The rules for the house's Douchebag Jar are completely arbitrary - that jar should be overflowing by now.

Summary: I watched this show, and I'll probably watch the next episode, but not because I laughed once or found any of the supporting characters appealing, it's just that, even when she's doing stupid, silly, unrealistic things, I can't resist Zooey's charm.

The autopsy scenes from Bones have more laughs.

The show as is should never have made it to air. Over the top performances all around just make you wince and wonder why you are still watching this... but it's Zooey Deschanel from 500 days of Summer so it must get better... it doesn't.

The show is flawed from the concept to casting.

Forget the bad writing, faulty premise, forced performances, caricature characters, juvenile humour, etc... This was a squandered opportunity given the talent of the star. The show would have worked better if they stuck to what's worked well for her in her past films. Quirky is good... but this is... forget it... it just doesn't work.

The sad thing is the supporting actors are all refugees from other failed shows and the writer's claim to fame is not exactly impressive either (No strings attached).

I guess the show could be retooled at this late stage but it would probably be better to just forget it ever happened. I know I am trying to.

A decent pilot. Nothing more
studioAT10 March 2017
This show sets out its stall early, as all good pilots should. We know by the end of the 22 minutes exactly what we'll be getting if we return.

We see that everything will be 'quirky', there'll be lots of sexual references (it's a comedy made in the 2010's - of course there will be) but most of the time its heart will be in the right place. Most of the time.

Everyone is well cast and it moves along at a fair old pace. For me though this show always seemed to be almost good, with any of the male characters being interchangeable.

It's not a show I'd return to often.
