Simple and yet charming
bruno_vinicius19858 July 2018
Not an Oscar winner but a nice movie to watch while having a glass of wine at home. The acting was great and the story was believable and yet simple. Makes you see life in a different way. You never know what tomorrow brings

Not a predictable movie - worth a watch
phd_travel17 July 2017
This movie doesn't fit neatly into a category. Parts of it seem like a middle age rom com with the music and wooing. Then part of it seems more dramatic.

Demi Moore plays a wife of a finance guy who gets in trouble with the law. She has to do some community service and reads to a blind writer/teacher played by Alec Baldwin.

The main fault is Alec Baldwin although he tries to act charming is a too overweight and unattractive to be the romantic lead. Demi Moore is still striking if a little scary looking. But not in a horror story way. Dylan McDermott is good as the menacing hedge fund husband who gets in trouble.

Worth a watch

NOT GOOD, NOT BAD, OKAY FOR A NIGHT'S ENTERTAINMENT
srobertson-751036 February 2020
It was an okay movie, a little predictable. It was good to see Demi Moore again. Actually the acting was quite good, but the story just seemed a little flat. No big surprises. Fortunately, the ending didn't leave you hanging like so many other movies. I was surprised to see three big names involved with such a so-so story (i.e. Baldwin, Moore, McGregor)

I liked it
Gordon-1116 August 2017
This film tells the story of a New York housewife, whose billionaire husband is detained in jail for fraud. She is sentenced to community service, and has to read to a successful but obnoxious author who turned blind from a traffic accident.

I think the title "Blind" doesn't really do the film justice, because the story is not really about blindness. Instead, it is a good romance film, with one character who happens to be blind. Alec Baldwin's character may be obnoxious, but somehow he is charming and attracts sympathy. His interaction and the blossoming friendship with Suzanne is well built up and portrayed. The scenery of the seaside town in the final scene is breath taking as well! I liked watching it.

VIEWS ON FILM review of Blind
burlesonjesse526 August 2017
Warning: Spoilers
2017's Blind is my latest review. Its opening scenes are intriguing. Then, Blind descends into yet another film in which the screenwriters become vague. Yes I'm talking about the details on how criminal characters are arrested, processed, and put through the almighty penal system. So OK, let's get all the puns out of the way shall we. There's basically no harm in "seeing" Blind. Natch.

Now in Blind, Robert Redford sings a song during the closing credits. That's right, Robert Redford. He's not one of Blind's producers, he doesn't star in Blind, and he's not behind the camera in any capacity. I mean how random is that?

Anyway, the story of Blind is as follows: Suzanne Dutchman (Demi Moore) and Mark Dutchman (Dylan McDermott) are a rich, married couple living in New York City. Mark, who's a crooked businessman, gets detained by police and thrown in jail. As Mark awaits trial, Suzanne also gets charged with knowing about her husband's illegal dealings. She's sentenced to community service and has to take care of a blind novelist named Bill Oakland (played by Alec Baldwin). Bill and Suzanne eventually have an affair all to the dismay of an angered Mark.

Blind, which proclaims that Brooklyn is the new Paris, is set to a backdrop similar to what Peter Glantz did when he directed 2014's The Longest Week. In truth, some of Blind is tedious and some of it is professing. Ultimately, this askew dramatization gets mixed results from me.

The acting from the leads nevertheless, is pretty decent. Everything else around them, not so much. Baldwin and Moore have okay chemistry but McDermott is truly the standout. As a dude who cheats on his wife and cheats on the American public, no one does ruthless, cold, and cunning quite like Dylan McDermott. As for Baldwin, well he paints an admirable portrait channeling a persona who can't see five feet in front of him. However, he's no Al Pacino (see next paragraph). Alec Baldwin's way of playing a blind chap is to pick a spot on the wall and basically stare at it. Valiant try there Alec.

In conclusion, Blind at ninety-eight minutes, is caught somewhere between a hard drama, a direct-to-video trash exploit, and a catatonic love story. Directed by Michael Mailer with a screenplay by John Buffalo Mailer (Michael's younger brother), Blind is for the most part, kind of watchable. Still, Mailer's film is sort of uneven as it shifts its cinematic tones literally on a dime. Imagine watching something that comes off like Scent of a Woman meets Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Then, add a TV movie feel to it. That's what you get with Blind. After watching it, I realized that Blind is a flick that doesn't really know what it wants to be. "Eyesight" isn't exactly 20/20. My rating: 2 and a half stars.

a pleasant surprise.

Warning: Spoilers
no one has reviewed this film as of 15July17. I'm very surprised at that considering the cast is comprised of 3 well known actors as the leads. first let me say that Demi Moore is looking very very ODD these days. you will notice the extreme plastic surgery when the camera 1st encounters her. if you can get past that initial shock she does give a good performance as the scorned woman. Mr Baldwin was a surprise as his character starts off as a dickhead and later becomes charming when he wants sum tail from Miss Moore. there is a fairy tale ending which only happens in films. overall i found the film entertaining and a good way to pass the time.

Overdeveloped Smell
westsideschl16 September 2017
Warning: Spoilers
For the first half I thought this was going to be an intelligent and creative story (something that hasn't been told a thousand times already), but then it just became pedestrian predictable from that point on. A quadrangle love affair with cheating, getting caught, changing your mind and the obvious changing tit again. Making it all worse was a predictable, maudlin, everyone ends up with their new lover happily ever after ending. As far as acting Baldwin did a respectable job with his, at times overacted, blind character while Moore was "just there".

Really positive reviews to some extent are fandom followers of Baldwin & Moore together with a slight inclination toward seeing Moore act.

Cliche everywhere but still captivated
cheer8818 August 2019
It's a relaxing and easy one. Nothing was significant or impressed but captivated enough for me to finish to the end.

The scripts and contents left quite some room to improve. I am not sure it was the cast or story to keep me watching. Somehow I was not bored by its predicable scenarios. It could have more layers and intellects to deepen its storyline. Demi and Alec were a little bit odd couple thrown together. I would prefer Nicole Kidman to play the role.

It's a lukewarm movie not intending to generate any publicity. It's certainly not a break out for its director. Maybe it is too safe to be memorable so to speak.

You may give a shot with your spear time.

Moore is a revelation
sbsieber23 November 2017
I have never been a fan of Demi Moore - I didn't get her appeal and was never impressed with her acting, but interestingly she was the thing I liked best about this movie. She is quite lovely, and her voice has lost that husky quality that I used to find so grating. Her acting was natural and subtle yet effective. Unfortunately, I don't have similar positive things to say about this movie. Baldwin is his typical blow-hard self, and his transformation from a frustrated, angry, and damaged tortured writer is not believable. He is also not believable as a romantic lead. Maybe he has done one too many Trump impressions, because his appeal at this point is just - "yuck".

The plot is schlocky and predictable, and the addition of the young man who initially volunteered to assist Baldwin's character only later to become his house boy/protégé was weak.

Over all a pretty bad B movie with A movie pretensions. The writing was weak and the plot was often silly and superficial.

BLIND would appeal to a prison inmate or an insomniac.
orange-9679828 October 2017
It was the type of movie that revives the Christian in us all. You will pray for a twist or turn to improve the plot or pray for an end. The movie and actors failed to bring the watcher into the plot. Trying to find some shard or crumb of a plot, with withered acting from actors trying to become "reborn" as movie stars, created a painful and embarrassing viewing situation - when with accompanying guests. The casting seemed to fail this movie more than the screenplay. I just don't like being the conduit of aging actors trying to revive their careers. There is a reason why Hollywood isn't calling them, and this movie will remind you of why.

The Little Town Called Eze
lavatch22 August 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Not far from Monte Carlo on the Côte d'Azur of Southern France lies the picturesque town of Eze. The name of Eze was one of the small details that were rolled into the combination romance and thriller called "Blind." The action of the film is triangulated around the strange relationship of a blind author and teacher of creative writing; a cruel, ruthless, and crooked entrepreneur; and the businessman's wife, who was at one point drawn into the shallow yet adrenaline-pumping lifestyle of her husband. But her world changes when she is introduced to the creative writer who has compensated for his blindness by being attentive to his other senses and to the intuitive side of his fellow human beings.

At one point in the film, the blind author Bill Oakland (Alec Baldwin) recognizes the scent of the perfume of Suzanne Dutchman (Demi Moore) as Muguet Des Bois, and her reaction is significant. This is an unusual moment when someone has complimented her on one of her personal choices. The moment is especially poignant to Suzanne when she discovers that her husband Mark (Dylan McDermott) has been unfaithful to her and has given the lover the gift of Chanel No. 5. Mark probably never even knew what was Suzanne's favorite perfume.

Baldwin, Moore, and McDermott are all excellent in their respective roles. The film is especially strong in the details, such as the title of Bill's next book ("Nothing Left to Win or Lose") that sums up the position he has adopted after he lost his eyesight in the auto accident that took the life of his wife.

One weakness of the film was in its less-than-scintillating dialogue that was clearly a stretch for the actors to perform with credibility or even a straight face. When the jealous Mark complains to Suzanne about her relationship with Bill, he waxes poetic in suggesting that "Bill is a short story; I'm your novel." Woof! Lines like that one did not sound like they were coming from the boy from Far Rockaway who pulled himself by his bootstraps to become "Mr. Dutchman."

The film was on much firmer footing with the broader strokes of character transformation, especially in the change that occurs in Suzanne. In her budding relationship with the blind author, it appears for the first time in her life that she has made contact with a person who recognizes her inner, fragile qualities and ultimately treats her as an equal, as opposed to an object. In the process, she comes to radiate the special wisps of sunlight that fall on the seascape of Eze.

Enjoyable
ritatrip4 July 2020
I think the cast did a good job. I found the characters believable and I could feel their connection, so the movie was entertaining. I enjoyed the build up, and I enjoyed the ending. Would recommend this movie when you just want to be entertained and like the characters. I generally enjoy Moore and Baldwin movies, and this also gets my vote.

The bloom is off the rose for Baldwin as a serious dramatic actor
moonspinner5523 July 2017
After 19 years of marriage, the high-living wife of a wealthy businessman is shocked to find out her husband has been arrested for insider trading (she's also surprised much later to learn he's been cheating on her). Sentenced for her complicity (which she appears to be innocent of), she must complete 100 hours of community service, filling that time by reading to the blind. Her audience is an antagonistic writer-turned-teacher who lost his sight and his wife in a car crash; he infuriates her immediately by calling her on her own self-deception, but eventually they form a romantic bond. Tepid drama from director Michael Mailer, who is unable to get a sincere performance from Alec Baldwin as the professor; at this point, Baldwin is so ubiquitous on television as a self-absorbed smart-ass and raconteur that disappearing into a character who has experienced tragedy is alien to him. It doesn't help that the script, by John Buffalo Mailer from Diane Fisher's story, fails to separate Baldwin's character from the actor's real-life persona, and when he gives Demi Moore a dressing down on their first meeting, he acts like he's doing a parody of Hannibal Lecter. As for Moore, she has lost her instincts as an actress (and her sense of humor); when she gets angry, it isn't angry enough--her face is a mask, and barely recognizable from the red-hot talent she once was. The film is full of tired give-and-take, also a facetious class conversation about gay sex in literature (followed by Baldwin bellowing, "Cut the sh*t!"), and Dylan McDermott taking down underlings and prisoners alike. It feels about as real as cartoon. *1/2 from ****

Stab your eyes out.
d.rust15 March 2018
First, Alec Baldwin can no longer be taken seriously because of his politics. His choice has been to malign (not satirize) his president. Second, Dermott Mulroney or Mullet McDermott or whoever he is phones in his performance as a one dimensional douche. The guy who plays Gavin is forgettable, as is Do-me More, a willing acolyte for Hollyweird society.

Plot: Douche Bag gets caught breaking the law. Douche Bag's wife has to perform commie service to atone for being married to said Douche: shoe-horned into reading for Scum Bag blind guy, after forgettable Petty Thief gets tossed by Scum Bag. Everyone is all part of the same problem, that is, they are all unlikeable as "people".

Eventual betrayal, murder and escape. But, we don't get what we really want: to see them destroy themselves and the film stock go up in flames.

Set your DVR to ERASE.

It has something for the right viewer
tish24712 October 2020
Go in with no preconceptions, and it's a pleasant way to spend a couple of hours. Is it a great movie? Well, no. But there were definitely some moments where I thought just a nip here, and a tuck there, and it could've been a contender, you know? The script (judging by what I saw on the screen, anyway) could've used a firmer hand. It got so close, but just didn't quite clear the bar. The acting was good. It was nice to see Demi do her thing. I don't think I've seen her in anything in ten years. On an unrelated side note...wow...either she has the most skilled and restrained surgeon/aesthetician on the planet, or this woman just doesn't age! Amazing. And it was nice to see Alec Baldwin doing something other than Trump. I usually feel like he's always just playing himself in every role (which isn't necessarily bad), but I felt a little differently about this one. They both did the best they could with the material, and they had some genuine moments. It was sweet. That was my overall feeling, in fact...the movie was sweet. The music really helped with that, too. Beautiful music! I got something out of it, and I didn't feel like it was a waste of time, so I'm happy.

The virtues of a blind person
esteban174712 January 2018
A film with an interesting plot, an educational one about the values of disabled people, those who struggle to live and forget their disability. A blind man is a human being who can see through his soul and his feelings. A blind man can write books, he/she can taste good food, good wine and even enjoy healthy air from uncontaminated environments. Those experiences are clear in the film. Above all, there is the fact that the blind can love and desire, live happy moments with their partner. The film exposes all these virtues of the blind person and the baseness of a rich person, unable to maintain a reciprocally affable relationship, and even capable of hitting someone who does not see. Intelligence on the side of the supposedly weak and the ruin on the side of the opulent.

Way To Insult The Viewer
ewissler27 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I liked how someone called this a "Paycheck Movie". Hooking an audience who has enjoyed these actors in well-made movies demonstrates that they are really not all that remarkable. Trite tripe, I say. It was so bad, I wasn't even surprised that a singing Robert Redford was slapped in there at the end. A poor soul actually called it a thriller, too! Wow. I suppose I need to say this comment contains a spoiler, in case someone jumps out of their skin when they hear the singer at the end. Maybe that's why it is called a "thriller".

Love and other ... things
kosmasp23 February 2021
This almost drifts into telenovela quality ... the thing that saves it (if you allow me to put it that way), are the actors. Especially Alec Baldwin is quite the powerhouse this movie one may thing does not deserve. Generally speaking all the actors are really good.

Still the story is predictable to a degree that almost leaves nothing hidden ... what also drags this down are some editing choices. Like towards the end when there is an accident and we see the reactions of peasants (clearly not actors), that is completely missplaced and feels weird if I were to put it mildly ... But again, if you buy into the love story of the whole thing, you may not even care - which again is a testament to the lead actors if anything

How very romantic. Enjoyable but forgettable.
subxerogravity17 July 2017
Alec Baldwin and Demi Moore are a good pairing because they are two very attractive people, Though Dylan McDermott is no slouch in the looks department either.

Baldwin plays a blind writer, (The stereotypical writer that's brilliant cause he wrote two great books but only published one, and he's half a bottle away from being a mean drunk). He had an encounter with Demi Moore who plays the wife of a business man who used her name to commit white collar crimes and now she's force to do community service to pay for those crimes (She too is a stereotype of being rich and white and use to getting whatever she wants but now she gets a little taste of life without the silver spoon).

McDermott's character is not as stereotyped, playing one of these wall street guys who was from the streets, but his story arch as the husband (Of Demi Moore's character) is very cliché (He treats her like she's property, and is very possessive). Though, I'm not sure if the amount of screen time McDermott got in the film was truly needed for the story, he was the most interesting character in the movie and it made the movie more interesting.

So they definitely needed him. The movie is not bad. It works best the more you like watching Alec Baldwin and Demi Moore (Who I rarely see in films today so it was a pleasure), but it's not a film that I would brag about. You watch it once, you'll like it and from there it's pretty forgettable.

It'll entertaining you for a few hours but leave no long lasting impression.

Actually quite nice
Alexho2812 November 2022
I had lower expectations for the film based on the IMDB rating but overall it was a good film. Acting was good, character development was there, I didn't find it predictable as others thought, I just enjoyed the ride. Easy to watch, Demi Moore is great for romance films, it's her speciality. Great to see her again. Baldwin played great. There was a certain east movement and development to the film. It tended to just evolve like rolling wine in a glass. I think if you wanted to just watch an easy film that will not spike your blood too much and just gently roll you into the night it is worth watching.

GeeZUS, 100% predictable
katherinecorley18 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The plot, script, acting, you can tell exactly what is going to happen. Let me guess, the leading lady will have to interact with a man who she can't stand and he has been lonely for years. Then he has some sort of revelation and starts turning on the charm and they have sex once and boom, they are in love. Finds out her best friend has been having an affair with her husband this whole time and tells her husband it is over. Goes to said irritating man, who she amazingly finds in BFE, and they live happily ever after. Gag me.

Haters gonna hate but don't let them scare you off.
fred4sure22 June 2018
Blind is a great little film that harkens back to the type of romance movies Hollywood pumped out back in the 1940s. The biggest difference being that Blind is only a romance film on the surface. At its core, Blind is a character study about two people who have had their lives turned upside down and only by opening up to one another are they able to start healing.

Blind is far from perfect but I don't think the writer and director were aiming for perfection. I certainly wasn't expecting a broad, sweeping epic. I adjusted my expectations at the start and sat back to learn about these characters and the growth they experience.

Blind was made on a limited budget but all the money is up on the screen. I think it's a sad state of affairs that there are hungry writers and directors who could have made a dozen films like Blind on what the studio spends to make a single Iron Man or Avengers movie.

If you're willing to meet it halfway, you may wind up liking Blind as much as I did.

See you at the movies.

Not Quite What You Might Expect!
spookyrat19 October 2022
Michael Mailer's Blind is kind of promoted as some sort of suspense thriller with romantic overtones. It's not spoiling to say that (thankfully) this isn't really the case. It's more of a straight drama, with a degree of suspense in some areas, but more of an autumnal romance between leads Alec Baldwin and Demi Moore who are both surprisingly good in their roles, developing a believably strong chemistry together. I ended up liking it better than I expected and really appreciated that it sensibly dialled down the histronics and didn't finish with guns ablazing, which could have easily been the case in the hands of a less discerning director.

It's by no means an outstanding film. For instance the Finding Forrester type sub - plot involving Steven Prescod's character Gavin O'Connor just doesn't really seem to go any where, ending with an ambiguous scene in Baldwin's blind author Bill Oakland's kitchen.

But I liked the interplay and narrative between Baldwin and Moore and Dylan McDermott makes a good villain in Mark Dutchman, the shady businessman/husband of Moore's Suzanne. Blind is one of those movies that could easily have slipped into a derivative, melodramatic flow, but director Mailer deftly avoids this. It was clever of him too, to frame the main storyline almost completely through Suzanne's eyes. So viewers, just like Suzanne, are never quite sure of the extent and overall influence of her husband's actions, which land him in jail and her on a 100 hour community work order, through which she meets Oakland and slowly, inevitably, they are both drawn to one another.

In the end it's a case of old fashioned star power combined with a reasonably engaging storyline that invigorates this ostensible romantic drama. It's worth a look and may well prove surprising to punters. 6.5/10.

Paycheck movie
Buckaroonoodle15 February 2020
Either the actors owed a friend a favor or they needed to pay some unexpected bill.

What a wasted cast on a first draft script, at best.

Either way, this could have been good if someone spoke up and tried making it a story worth caring about. Instead you get some heavy hitters with nothing to play with.
