A back story is only interesting if it stays in the background, to give the main character his deepness, his texture, a halo of mystery. It allows the audience -us- to develop our own myth around his past, his motivations, his future too.
But, no, we are stupid, so we are force-fed an extraordinary amount of absurdities passing as acts of independence, rebellion or humanity -when actually it's just plain idiocy- just to mask the inability to actually invent other characters, other stories, other cases. Subsequently the main character becomes and behaves like a superhero in a marvel : erratic, heroic, alone, like a poor lonesome cowboy and everybody else's life just melt in a saturated soap-like sentimentalism.
Fine actors deserve better.

Ridley joins Carol on the investigation into a young man, who fell to his death off a building. The investigation is made complicated some vital evidence into the death of Ridley's wife and daughter emerges.
This really did leave me wanting more, it's been a fine series, and it concludes with yet another strong episode.
An engrossing, engaging story, and finally we get a few answers to questions that have been posted in the first three episodes. Finally we learn about Michael Flannery, Aidan McArdle is excellent once again.
Two particularly great scenes, the big scene with Jack being one, and that moment where Ridley and Carol clash, the show needed that, it's lacked that sense of conflict, it worked very well.
The acting was first rate, and has been impeccable throughout, Dunbar was terrific here. Nico Mirallegro may just have stolen the show as Cal though.
Beautifully filmed again, stunning location work, credit to the production team, once again, wardrobe must genuinely all be colour blind.
Four weeks have flown by, I've looked for news about a possible second series, and so far no information can be found, hopefully the show returns, for me, it's been a cut above,
8/10.

It usually takes a lot to get me to watch an ITV police series, not because their all terrible, but because they're all so similar once you've seen one, you've seen them all. They need some sort of hook, like "Unforgotten" to get me to watch normally, but Ridley had the fortune of having me sit down just at the point someone else in my family was starting it. I ended up watching all four, but if anything, it reinforced my views about these sorts of shows.
Ridley (Adrian Dunbar) is a former police detective, who took medical retirement following the murder of his wife and daughter in an arson attack on their home. A couple of years later he returns as a consultant at the behest of DI Carol Farman (Bronagh Waugh) who worked under Ridley and was promoted soon after his departure. Though Ridley still has a sharp analytical mind, his grief continues to weigh heavy and his unpredictable nature worries the departments management structure.
I feel like I can see the pitch meetings that went; "You know Adrian likes to sing, don't you?" "Really, what sort of music?" "Jazz mostly" "Interesting. . . Stay with me here, what if our tiny Northern pit town location, inexplicably, has a successful Jazz club, that Ridley is part owner of"
So, Adrian Dunbar gets to knock out a few bars in each episode, which is about the nearest thing "Ridley" has as a unique hook. To be clear, I'm not saying it's bad, not at all. Some of the acting is a bit dodgy and in two of the cases I guessed who the killer was, and why, well before the reveals. But it's the epitome of standard Sunday evening police procedurals that provide a perfectly acceptable and wholly undemanding, if perhaps forgettable, 90's minutes delay to going to bed and getting up the next morning to go to work.
I'm probably invested enough that if they make some more, I'll watch them too but it's more about my completionist brain, rather than any genuine love for it.

This series started off well, but just tailed of mid-way. As I mentioned in my review for the overall series, it appeared like the writers just took time off.
Things seemed incoherent and events were illogical. You had the typical know-it-all, better than the rest hero who does everything against the rule book to finally be proven right. I just despise any series that takes that route. You saw this at times in Frost and even Lynley (with the DS in one episode).
Otherwise this appeared to be a good series and hope it comes again next year with better stories. I like Adrian Dunbar, having seen him in Line of Duty and would love to see him play the role of a sensible cop.

¿Sabías que...?
- CuriosidadesIn the first scene at Ridley's nightclub, Annie's dialogue spoils the ending of the previous episode, Swansong, by revealing the killer's name.
- PifiasThe angle of the murder victim's legs changes between shots.
