At the Overlook Film Festival, attendees were treated to a rare screening of Oculus in celebration of its 10th anniversary and Mike Flanagan being awarded with the festival's Master of Horror award! Ahead of the screening, I had a chance to catch up with Mike Flanagan for an in-depth discussion on one of my favorite modern horror films. From discussing him playing Bloody Mary and his fascination with mirrors, to casting, the on-set experience, and sequel chances, we discuss it all below:
I can't believe it's been 10 years since Oculus was released! It's interesting because I hadn't revisited the film in a little bit, but I've seen everything that you've directed, and so it's been a joy to watch the progression of your career, the stories you tell, and the way you tell them.
Looking back at Oculus, it's very much a blueprint for telling really powerful supernatural stories rooted in family dynamics and trauma.

The trailer for Joker 2: Folie à Deux dropped today, and it’s sending chills up the spines of DC Comics fans. Starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, the musical psychological thriller sees the Joker (Phoenix) finding some unhinged form of love in Gaga’s Harley Quinn. Joker 2: Folie à Deux brings another fandom into the fold with the “Bloody Mary” singer‘s Little Monsters. In honor of Lady Gaga’s role, let’s look at her wildest and more out-there looks of all time:

Before she was involved with the Joker, Stefani Germanotta, aka Lady Gaga, was already experimenting with face paint. However, instead of an unhinged red smile smeared across her mouth, the 13-time Grammy Award-winner channeled her inner Picasso with pink, yellow, and black face paint to match her oversized abstract jacket and lilac skirt.

Even The Beatles didn’t always knock it out of the park. Case in point: John Lennon once said that George Harrison wasn’t hip anymore. Here’s a look at whether he was right.
John Lennon said George Harrison was ‘out’ the way The Beatles once were
The book Lennon on Lennon: Conversations With John Lennon features an interview from 1975. In it, John said he wasn’t impressed with one of George’s live shows. “Now it’s always The Beatles were great or The Beatles weren’t great, whatever opinion people hold,” he said. “There’s a sort of illusion about it. But the actual fact was The Beatles were in for eight months, The Beatles were out for eight months.
“The public, including the media, are sometimes a bit sheeplike and if the ball starts rolling, well, it’s just that somebody’s in, somebody’s out,...

The “Shallow” singer has left her little monsters full of worry and concern after her recent livestream interview with beauty influencer Nikkie de Jager, aka NikkieTutorials.
During her interview, the two women kept conversing like they were old pals who met and rekindled their friendship.
The interview focused more on Lady Gaga‘s life and her upcoming album, LG7. Although the “Bloody Mary” singer gave out some details about her upcoming album, her little monsters weren’t exactly paying attention to that as their main focus was on her face.
First of all, Lady Gaga donned on a black sleeveless blouse and wore her long platinum blonde hair down.
Her simple makeup looked so natural that you might think she didn’t wear any. But then, amid all her beauty and composure, the fact that her face looked “swollen” didn’t escape their notice.

The Bloody Disgusting-powered Screambox is home to a variety of unique horror content, from originals and exclusives to cult classics and documentaries. With such a rapidly-growing library, there are many hidden gems waiting to be discovered.
Here are five recommendations you can stream on Screambox right now.
Ghost Killers vs. Bloody Mary
If bustin’ makes you feel good, Ghost Killers vs. Bloody Mary should be at the top of your queue. Imagine Sam Raimi remaking Ghostbusters from a Kevin Williamson script, and you have a pretty good idea of what this Brazilian horror-comedy is like: gory, self-aware, irreverent, and wildly entertaining.
When a local high school summons Bloody Mary, the Ghoulbusters — a team of local YouTubers with a cheesy ghost hunting show — are called in to take out the vengeful spirit. In addition to possessing people to the point of cranial combustion, the ghost exploits the high school setting by haunting inanimate objects,...

Mhi’ya Iman Le’Paige may not be the best Cher impersonator, but after Friday’s episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race, we can confidently call her the lip sync assassin of Season 16.
Following a lackluster performance in this week’s Wednesday-themed design challenge, which found the contestants channeling their inner goths on the runway, the self-proclaimed Queen of Flips once again landed in the bottom two. For those keeping score at home (aka all of us), this marked Mhi’ya’s third time having to lip sync for her life, resulting in a humbling experience for the Miami-based entertainer.

Lady Gaga has always been quite an inspiration to many when it comes to her exceptional taste in fashion. Renowned for redesigning her image and showcasing her multifacetedness in entertainment, the singer-songwriter-actress stands as a unique icon in every field she delves into. And as much as she cares for and maintains herself, Gaga’s care inevitably encompasses her family as well.

A year ago, “M3GAN,” one of the snazziest films ever produced by Blumhouse Productions, was the exception to the rule of first-weekend-of-January trash thrillers. The movie was witty and shivery in a preposterous way, its robot-killer-doll scenario actually had a thing or two to say about AI, and it gave us the year’s most memorable android-girl dance meme — at least, until Jenna Ortega’s Wednesday Addams danced with her hands to Lady Gaga’s “Bloody Mary.” But now, opening in the same junkyard weekend slot, we have another Blumhouse production, “Night Swim,” which restores a certain order to the cinematic universe by being as tepid and unscary as a proper early-in-January movie should be.
“Night Swim” is about a family that moves into a house with a swimming pool that’s haunted, and everything about the spirits that rule this pool — the ghost backstory, the greenish-brown sludge that oozes up from the drain,...

Before there were horror movies, there were legends. Passed down through oral tradition, our earliest ancestors created colorful fables of vengeful gods, malevolent witches, and ravenous beasts lurking in the darkest corners of the night. Often told to entertain, these spooky tales also included hidden warnings about the dangers of straying from the path, disobeying one’s parents, or breaking social norms. As the years have passed between then and now, so have the stories. Horrific tales of poisoned apples have become whispered warnings to check Halloween candy for razor blades. Trolls lurking in the woods have transformed into a hook-handed murderer haunting lover’s lane.
Contemporary legends are more likely to be shared in an email forward than around the campfire, but their functions remain the same. These tales exist to help us navigate an unpredictable world and their subjects have evolved alongside our cultural fears. We’ve also updated our methods of delivery,...

This article contains spoilers for the Oct. 31 episode of “Dancing With the Stars”
The nine remaining couples on “Dancing With the Stars” hit the dance floor in costume as vampires, werewolves and skeletons on Tuesday night, which also happened to be Halloween.
The season’s first dance marathon gave the points edge to Marvel star Xochitl Gomez, who had been tied at the top of the leaderboard with “Vanderpump Rules” star Ariana Madix after their solo dances.
For her gothic Argentine Tango, Madix was a harpy and Pasha Pashkov was a harpy slayer as they danced to an instrumental version of “Bad Guy” by Billie Eilish. Guest judge Niecy Nash proclaimed it was “amazing” and “so beautiful,” adding, “I am obsessed with you.”Bruno Tonioli raved, “This is how you do it!” of the note-perfect dance. Carrie Ann Inaba told Pons, “I think you have what it takes to win it.

“Dancing with the Stars'” move to Tuesdays this season means that its annual Halloween night will actually fall on Halloween this year.
The top nine couples will hit the floor in costumes galore on Monster Night before facing off in the dance marathon — or Dance Monster-thon. Niecy Nash-Betts will also serve as guest judge. The Argentine tango will make its season debut via three couples, while the hustle and the Charleston are the styles for the dance marathon. The judges will tap out couples one by one during the marathon and the last couple standing will be crowned Hallow king and queen. Bonus points from the marathon will be added to the individual scores.

I was blown away by Michael Thelin‘s debut feature which is highlighted by star Sarah Bolger, who delivers a chilling performance that would make any parent check twice before hiring a new babysitter.

“Burning Betrayal” is a Brazilian movie directed by Diego Freitas and written by Sue Hecker. It stars Giovanna Lancellotti and Leandro Lima.
Do you fancy an erotic thriller? This movie has a bit of both, without leaning excessively on the erotic element – though, it does have its spicy scenes – nor being tremendously suspenseful to qualify as a great thriller. Its peculiarity lies on its comedic touch, bringing about a combination that is quite entertaining. We don’t know which side outweighs the other.
Plot
Babi has a perfect life and has carefully prepared for adulthood, leaving behind her beloved motorcycle and her youthful life. All for a guy, a young and handsome lawyer. Unfortunately, Babi discovers his infidelity and, naturally, gets angry.

Iconic scaremaker R.L. Stine has been terrorizing kids and teens for over three decades. The mere mention of the author’s name readily brings up memories of Goosebumps and Fear Street. Yet, it was his two short-story collections, The Haunting Hour and Nightmare Hour, that inspired one of the best horror TV shows for young people.
The beginnings of The Haunting Hour can be traced back to a 2007 straight-to-video movie called Don’t Think About It, which then aired on Cartoon Network. Despite its title and Stine’s writing credit, though, the movie’s script wasn’t based on anything from its literary namesake. In fact, this was an original story penned by creative partners Dan Angel and Billy Brown. One of the production companies behind Don’t Think About It, The Hatchery, then revived the Haunting Hour brand a few years later once its co-founder and the movie’s executive producer,...

Halloween isn't just for children. That's why whenever scary season rolls around, you need a music playlist that keeps everyone in mind - from the kids who love the latest ghoulish Disney Channel Original Movie musical to those who got down to Michael Jackson's "Thriller" when it first came out in the '80s.
That's also why you have to get creative when it comes to the spooky songs you choose for your Allhallows' Eve playlists. If you only include songs that are explicitly Halloween-themed, like "Monster Mash" by Bobby "Boris" Pickett and the Crypt-Kickers or "This Is Halloween" from "The Nightmare Before Christmas," the tunes could get stale real quick. So remember to work in music that has Halloween vibes, too.
Jimin's "Filter" may not strike you as a Halloween song at first but with lyrics like, "I can be your genie / How about Aladdin? / I'll be...

For this month’s installment of “TV Terrors” we revisit the short-lived, kid-friendly horror series “Deadtime Stories,” which aired on Nickelodeon from 2012-2014.
For many years in the aughts, after Nickelodeon brought “Are You Afraid of the Dark?” to a close, the channel spent a lot of time investing in teen comedies and sitcoms. But with the resurgence of horror television around 2012, Nickelodeon began trying their hand at the horror genre once again. “Deadtime Stories” was born, an anthology horror-fantasy television series written by Annette Cascone and based on the Scholastic book series of the same title, which was created by both Annette and Gina Cascone.
“Deadtime Stories” premiered on Nickelodeon shortly after Halloween in 2012. The series, despite its title, was geared primarily for the age 7-10 crowd, and it amounted to some good gateway horror for budding horror geeks. Directed mainly by Daniel Hillebrand, “Deadtime Stories” featured some interesting guest stars like Diane Ladd,...

Talk To Me is that rare indie gem of a horror movie that all of us horror fans are in desperate need of but, more often than not, don’t get. This year has been littered with horror films, including indies, big-budget films, requels, sequels, and more, but nothing comes close to being as powerful as Talk To Me. This movie feels genuinely authentic and original, even though it follows the same old pattern of grief ridden person tormented by the supernatural. We are positive there was a massive brainstorming session last year, and everybody decided to choose grief and the loss of a loved one for this year’s horror themes. Talk To Me is an allegory for drugs and is essentially a PSA for drug abuse and peer pressure. It’s also a great representation of teenagers and their experiences in the most authentic manner that doesn’t...

Jenna Ortega is sharing some major insight into "Wednesday" season two. "It's still coming together, but we've decided we want to lean into the horror more," Ortega, who stars as Wednesday, told Elle Fanning in an article published by Variety on June 7 as part of their "Actors on Actors" series. "We're ditching any romantic love interest, which is really great. We're going to get bolder, more dark."
Netflix announced the show had officially been renewed on Jan. 6, with a short teaser featuring footage of Ortega alongside scenes from the show and clips of fan events.
The video also used Lady Gaga's "Bloody Mary" as its soundtrack, a song that became associated with the show on TikTok. "The global phenomenon will return for season two," Netflix said in the clip.

When it comes to some horror movies, there are instances where filmmakers prioritize shock value, cheap thrills, or visual effects over a well-developed plot. These movies often rely on exaggerated and illogical scenarios to create a sense of fear or suspense, sometimes sacrificing coherence and depth in the process. The film Boo can be an example of this type of horror movie, and it revolves around four friends, Kaira, Kavya, Aruna, and Rithika, who plan to have a memorable Halloween by throwing a party. They gather together, enjoying the festivities, and decide to enhance the spooky atmosphere by reading a mysterious Halloween book. As they delve into the book’s contents, strange occurrences begin to unfold around them. But the lines between reality and fiction become blurred, and Kaira, in particular, questions her own sanity, unsure if she is witnessing genuine supernatural occurrences or succumbing to her mind’s deception.

Josh Segarra could be Hollywood’s biggest fan. The actor, who has been working steadily for the past 15 years — first with day gigs like a scene in the Homeland pilot shortly after his graduation from NYU, later with recurring roles on Chicago P.D. and Orange Is the New Black — is effusive, bordering on glowing, about the business. He remembers details about every guest spot he’s ever done, every executive or star who’s helped him to where he is today. Claire Danes was “so sweet and kind” and did crossword puzzles on set; John Leguizamo was “awesome”; Kevin Bacon offered some banter about the New York Giants to calm some nerves. “It hasn’t been lost on me when somebody can tell I’ve got stars in my eyes and takes the time to give me a hug,” he says. “It’s why I’ll never stop being a fan of this business.

Salem, Massachusetts brews up more Halloween activities than you can shake a broom at each October, so it was logical for Salem Horror Fest to take place during the spookiest month of the year. For its sixth installment, however, the festivities have moved to the spring, making it much easier to attend without throngs of tourists.
If last night’s opening night ceremony — headlined by a screening of Candyman with Tony Todd in attendance — is any indication, horror lovers will show up any time of the year. Held at the Peabody Essex Museum, the event kicked off with poignagnt opening remarks by festival director Kay Lynch. She briefly outlined the evolution of Salem Horror, which was born out of her desire for catharsis after the 2016 election.

Former Shudder chief Craig Engler left the streaming service a couple months ago, shortly after overseeing the release of the horror film Skinamarink, which was made on a budget of $15,000 and earned over $2 million during its theatrical run. Now Variety reports that Engler has teamed up with The Cartel, the production company behind Shudder’s Creepshow series, to launch Shiver Studios, “a new genre company with plans to make and finance up to 10 horror films a year”!
Variety explains that the Los Angeles-based studio will focus on a theatrical-first approach, looking to ride the recent trend of indie horror hits. The overall plan is for Shiver to follow its theatrical releases with a Tvod, SVOD, AVOD, linear and physical windowing strategy, working with partners that include both streamers and traditional distributors.

Creepshow producer The Cartel and former Shudder head Craig Engler have teamed up to launch Shiver Studios.
The new venture plans to finance and produce between four and 10 horror movies a year that first target theatrical releases. The Cartel produced Creepshow for AMC and Engler headed up AMC Networks’ horror-focused Shudder streamer.
“When Craig Engler approached the Cartel about partnering on a new horror studio, we jumped at the opportunity. Craig’s knowledge and relationships in the horror space and horror community are unparalleled. His expertise combined with Cartel’s production, financing and distribution infrastructure makes Shiver Studios a very exciting opportunity,” Stan Spry, co-ceo of Cartel Pictures, said in a statement on Friday.

When it comes to the golden era of slasher films, most will say it was the 1980s, but the 1990s are not to be ignored as they brought us an amazing bunch of films and some that redefined the sub-genre (including one that’s getting a fifth sequel this weekend). Here’s our list of the Best 90s Slasher Films:
Wishmaster (1997)
This one is considered a fantasy slasher, so it’s a bit controversial as to if it is a slasher or not. For this list, let’s consider it one. It’s fantastic and Andrew Divoff is 98% of why it’s so good. This film is his and he makes it the best it could be. His work is both charming and menacing, giving his character an aura that makes the whole film what it is. It’s creepy, it has great kills, and the cameos in this one are to die for.

‘American Horror Stories’ offers its unique take on a classic trope, but thin characters and predictable plotting result in a shattered episode.
“You light a candle in a room and then you say her name three times…”
There’s a natural shorthand that exists with creepy characters like Bloody Mary that have become omnipresent in pop culture. Not only are most American Horror Story audiences aware of Bloody Mary’s urban legend, but there’s been a demand to see her worked into the series for some time now. The twisted “monkey’s paw” logic that accompanies Bloody Mary and similar specters is ripe material for the horror genre to explore and low-rent Blumhouse material like Wish Upon or Truth or Dare (or Shudder’s Kandisha) do exactly that. American Horror Stories finally finds a suitable story to explore this staple, but “Bloody Mary” is arguably the weakest application of this premise.

When a new low-budget horror film copies Jessica Harper’s car-bound arrival from the original Suspiria within its first ten minutes, one knows instantly what territory they’re in, as amalgamating scenes and stylistic tics of various ‘70s and ‘80s horror classics has basically been the standard process for a whole decade’s worth of genre film. At the point where you’re just waiting for the obligatory split-diopter shot to show up, it’s hard to not get the feeling of the genre going into a bit of a death spiral. And, when aside from maybe two good blood spurts, the film seems to be lightly ashamed to even be a slasher––not relishing in the deaths at all, or even generating much in the way of tension––there’s an even bigger problem at hand.
Though in the case of Seance, the Suspiria connection goes further, as new...

Many things can be true at the same time, a concept that first-time feature director and long-time horror scribe Simon Barrett tries to tap into with his debut “Seance.” It hints at the possibility of two ghosts within its first five minutes and the twinned ghost stories soon expand to involve all manner of other horror-centric tropes: a creepy boarding school, a mysterious new girl, a shy new friend with (maybe) a secret, even a handsome outsider who loves to lurk — along with the usual assortment of flickering lights, bloody visions, and a basement filled with archival material that might hold some answers. Yes, many things can be true at once, but “Seance” might benefit from being pared to a more streamlined story.
Barrett’s film hints at the sleeker, darker film underneath his many genre fixations; it also sets up the possibility of a followup that could better tap into those ideas.

Crime Scene: The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel unpacks the tragic case of Elisa Lam, a young traveler who was found in the water tank of the Cecil Hotel in 2013. Her cause of death was officially listed as an accidental drowning with her bipolar disorder as a significant factor. However, the strange details around her case attracted amateur detectives who contested this ruling. Before her body was found, police released security footage of her behaving oddly in the hotel elevator. Unsurprisingly, web sleuths picked apart the video to formulate speculations about foul play. One of the oddest theories to emerge was that Lam was playing The Elevator Game, a routine reminiscent of Bloody Mary. If you're unfamiliar with this game, keep reading ahead to find out what it's all about - it's pretty creepy stuff.

Jane Schoenbrun understands the internet. The filmmaker behind such projects as “A Self-Induced Hallucination” (a 2018 doc “about the internet”), the tech-tinged “Eyeslicer” series, and the dreamy “collective: unconscious” has always found the space to explore the worldwide web with respect, reverence, and a hearty dose of fear. For their narrative feature debut, Schoenbrun expands their obsessions to craft an intimate tale about the impact of modern internet culture. , “We’re All Going to the World’s Fair” is a strong debut for a filmmaker who is nothing if not consistent in their themes.
Fair warning: If you, like this critic, are not someone positively impacted by Asmr (autonomous sensory meridian response), “We’re All Going to the World’s Fair” will likely get even more under your skin than it will for audiences who enjoy the whispered noises that trigger the condition. But even when it’s chilling, the movie finds meaning in discomfort.

Is it me, or are the requirements for calling spirits becoming kind of vague with each movie that comes out? Bloody Mary and Candyman require a mirror and the utterance of their names, the Bye Bye Man only requires someone to think about him, and demons and devils usually require an Ouija board or some insane ritual to summon them. So how often is it that a person finds a glass bottle on a bridge? What if it’s plastic, does it work then? Yes, these are very nitpicky questions to ask of a movie that does look like it’s kind

Move over Bloody Mary and Candyman.
Disney just dropped the trailer for “The Empty Man” — a mystical, horrifying entity that is summoned if you find an empty bottle on a bridge, blow into it and think of him. On the first night, you hear him. On the second night, you see him.
“And on the third night,” a teen asks his creepy young friend who wishes to summon him. “Well on the third night he finds you.”
That’s the setup for “The Empty Man,” a horror film based on the Boom! Studios graphic novels that opens this month. James Badge Dale plays a retired cop who investigates a group of teens in a Midwestern town who try to summon The Empty Man, only for locals to mysteriously disappear and put other peoples’ lives in danger.
David Prior directs the film based on a screenplay he wrote based on Cullen Bunn’s graphic novel.
