Horror delights, rom-coms and a new sci-fi series starring Christoph Waltz are just a few of the highlights arriving on Amazon Prime Video in February. This month sees the debut of the second and final season of “Carnival Row” on Feb. 17, while Feb. 24 is when “The Consultant” – a “Severance”-like thriller series starring Waltz and directed by “WandaVision’s” Matt Shakman – drops.
In terms of new original Prime Video movies, on Feb. 10 there’s “Somebody I Used to Know,” a romantic comedy starring Alison Brie who co-wrote the script with her husband Dave Franco (who serves as director).
And you’ll find last year’s buzzy horror hit “Smile” on the streaming service on Feb. 21, while “Mad Max: Fury Road” filmmaker George Miller’s “Three Thousand Years of Longing” arrives on Feb. 17.
That’s not to mention noteworthy library additions like “A.I.,” “The Talented Mr. Ripley” and “Almost Famous.

The new year is upon us and Amazon Prime Video is kicking things off in grand fashion. Not only are they debuting the third season of their Tom Clancy adaptation “Jack Ryan,” they’re also debuting the final season of the ambitious, Al Pacino-starring actioner “Hunters.”
Initially debuting to the service in February of 2020, right as the pandemic started, the series’ first season follows a ragtag group of Nazi hunters in 1977 New York City. The so-called Hunters discover that hundreds of high-ranking Nazi officials are living in the United States and are conspiring to create a Fourth Reich in America. The Nazi hunters, led by Pacino, will embark on a bloody quest to bring the Nazis to justice and thwart their genocidal plans. The series concluded in 2020 and has taken some time to get back to screens. Unfortunately, this second season will be a finale as well so fans...

Given that The Quarry is the latest horror game from the brilliant minds behind the modern genre classic Until Dawn, it should come as no surprise that the game’s cast is filled with horror character tropes voiced (and often motion-captured) by a lot of familiar names.
Indeed, part of the fun of playing a game like The Quarry comes from trying to figure out where you know so many of its cast members from. While a few names will jump out at you instantly, others most certainly fall into that “Oh yeah, I know them” category.
So if you’re tired of scratching your head over who is who in The Quarry, here’s a breakdown of the game’s cast of primary characters and where you might know their actors from.
Abigail Blyg – Voiced by Ariel Winter
Abigail is a shy and occasionally awkward camp counselor who seemingly aspires to be an artist.

Bam! Pow! Crack! That’s the sound of “Spider-Man: No Way Home” (Sony/5.99) holding back the ascension of “The Batman” (Warner Bros./24.99) on two out of three PVOD charts.
“The Batman” debuted a week ago, but “Spider-Man” held on to the #1 spot at both iTunes and GooglePlay, with “The Batman” second at both. Those sites rank by number of transactions, irrespective of revenue. At Vudu, which calculates by money, not individual sales, “The Batman” ranks #1 for the week, with “Spider-Man” #3..
The well-timed price drop looks like a strategic play on Sony’s part. Price reduction is a normal part of VOD play, but it’s unusual when a film is still thriving as PVOD. Whatever the motive, the result prevents Warner Bros. from claiming a clear victory.
Even so: Spider-Man and Batman represent apples and oranges. Sony’s “Spider-Man” has no streaming outlet while “The Batman” also debuted last Monday on HBO Max.

The timing could not be more exquisite. Just as exhibitors and studios prepare to gather for their first full-throated, in-person CinemaCon convention in Las Vegas that begins April 25, bête noire Netflix revealed the streaming service lost 200,000 customers in Q1 2022 and will lose another 2 million in Q2.
For the National Association of Theater Owners, this is a long, dark drink of schadenfreude with a caffeine boost. Netflix, to a near-absurd degree, symbolized a nuclear threat to box office. However, this proves that while Netflix is a disruptor, it operates under the same laws of gravity that govern every other business.
However, to put this in perspective: It’s a dire prospect, losing more than 2 million users in six months — but that would represent one percent of the Netflix user base. For theaters, domestic gross for first quarter 2022 was 1.33 billion; the same period in 2019 grossed 2.44 billion. That’s a 45 percent drop and...

Ventana Sur, which wrapped Friday, was, on many counts, quite extraordinary. With Buenos Aires, the market’s normal location, still under Covid-19 lockdown, Latin America’s biggest movie mart-meet spread out film screenings over five cities in two continents – Madrid, Mexico City, Bogotá, São Paulo and Santiago de Chile – complemented by digital screenings for the rest of the world. Following, five takes on that bold gambit and the market itself, organized by Argentina’s Incaa Film Institute and the Cannes Marché du Film and Festival:

Paris-based Axxon Films has picked up international rights to Imanol Rayo’s thriller “Death Knell” and Mireia Gabilondo’s comedy “The Hive,” two very different titles set in and produced by Spain’s Basque region.
The production, distribution and sales-company is presenting the Spanish pics, both distributed in Spain by Bilbao’s Barton Films, as part of its Ventana Sur lineup.
Based on Miren Gorrotxategi’s novel “33 campanadas,” and produced by Abra Producciones in association with Eitb, “Death Knell” centers on the discovery of human remains at a family farm. Fermin and Karmen call their son Nestor, who reports the matter to the authorities. When they turn up, however, the bones are gone. In the course of the police investigation, long dormant secrets are dredged up.
The film, which premiered at this year’s San Sebastian Film Festival in its prestigious New Directors section, is Rayo’s sophomore feature after 2011’s “Bi anai.

American character actor Tobin Bell is, of course, a true horror star after appearing throughout the entire Saw franchise as the antagonist John Kramer, aka Jigsaw. More recently, Bell has worked on other movies of this genre, including the Mexican production Belzebuth, directed by Emilio Portes, and The Call, which just hit theaters and drive-ins in the US last Friday, October 2. Directed by Timothy Woodward Jr., The Call follows a group of teenagers who hold a grudge against an old lady, Edith Cranston (Lin Shaye), who’s apparently a witch and the unpunished responsible party for the disappearance years ago of a local girl, the sister of one of the teen protagonists. The new kid on the block, Chris (Chester Rushing), soon joins the “tradition”...

James Wan and Leigh Whannell may have branched out to become successful filmmakers in a variety of genres, but the duo have left a lasting impression on 21st Century horror.
As well as co-creating Saw, with the former also spearheading the Conjuring universe and the latter relaunching the Universal Monsters series with The Invisible Man, Wan and Whannell spawned the Insidious franchise. The Furious 7 and Aquaman director helmed the first two installments, while his regular collaborator scripted all four and stepped behind the camera for the third.
Reviews have been generally mixed across the board for the low budget horror series, but Insidious is another one of the brands associated with Wan to do big business at the box office. The four entries have raked in over half a billion dollars globally on combined production costs of just $26 million, making it one of the most profitable enterprises in the extensive Blumhouse back catalogue.

As Regal Theaters in the U.S. and U.K. parent Cineworld weigh closing their cinemas, this weekend’s box office offered little encouragement as this weekend’s top 10 came to about $8.2 million, and could be $10 million-$11 million for all films. That’s down from $9.6 million for last weekend’s top 10, which saw about $12 million overall. By comparison: This weekend in 2019, with the opening of “Joker,” brought in $150 million overall.
“Tenet,” by far the biggest contributor to domestic returns since it opened a month ago ,held well again, down 21 percent with $2.7 million. It has reached $45.1 million domestic so far, for $307 million worldwide.
The only country that is not reliant on “Tenet” is China, where local titles have driven the grossed to over $1 billion in the last six weeks. This weekend (a holiday there) showed two titles both gross over $150 million with “My People My Homeland” and the animated “Jiang Ziya.

The seemingly most reprehensible villain in a small town can ultimately become the most sympathetic anti-hero, once people truly take the time to get to know them. As John Kramer, aka Jigsaw, in the Saw movies, Tobin Bell forces people to face their sins through elaborate traps, and he gives a group of teenagers the same opportunity in The Call, only this time he's doing it at the behest of his late wife, Edith (Lin Shaye), who isn't quite resting in peace after a heartbreaking accident. With The Call now playing at drive-ins via Cinedigm, we caught up with Bell to talk about working with Shaye for the first time on The Call, and he also shared his excitement for the upcoming Spiral: From the Book of Saw.
How did the opportunity to play Edward come about? Did they come to you with the script? Did they kind of write it with you in mind?
Tobin Bell: Nobody ever said that to me. And I think it's probably unlikely that they wrote it with me in mind,...

Helmed by a powerhouse team consisting of Misha Green, J.J. Abrams, and Jordan Peele, HBO's Lovecraft Country weaves Lovecraftian horror lore into the monstrous realities of Jim Crow segregation. Adapting Matt Ruff's 2016 novel of the same name, it plays around with the creatures popularized by writer H.P. Lovecraft, who was notoriously racist. Lovecraft Country, in part, reveals how monstrous racists can be. But it also taps into literal, physically terrifying monsters. We don't encounter too many creatures in the first episode, but the ones that we have seen are enough to give us nightmares for days.
Let's take a closer look at the ones that have emerged thus far and explore how they connect to Lovecraftian lore. Bear in mind that Lovecraft's monsters are said to be so horrific, that the mere sight of them drives people to the brink of madness. Because of this, no one has been...

Tim Cappello — aka the Sax Man from Joel Schumacher’s 1987 film “The Lost Boys” — only met Joel Schumacher two times. But the musician has fond memories of shooting the boardwalk concert scene with the director, who died Monday.
Cappello’s scene in the cult classic movie is just under two minutes long as the muscular, shirtless sax player performs the song, “I Still Believe” to a group of Santa Cruz, Calif. locals. The boardwalk is teeming with vampires during the scene where Jason Patric’s Michael first spots Jamie Gertz, who plays the mysterious Star.
“Oh man, I didn’t know. I’m so sad that I’ll never get to see him again,” says Capello. “I always thought I’d get to have one more conversation with him, he was such a fun guy to shoot the s–t with, such an interesting, knowledgeable, funny guy.”

James Payne’s “The Window,” which is being pitched as part of MipTV Online Plus’s Drama Buyers Summit, a digital marketplace for international broadcasters, is a drama-thriller set in the world of professional soccer.

Who knew angst was a power?
Despite all their bickering, the Bellweather Unit continued to shine during recruit training on Motherland: Fort Salem Season 1 Episode 2.
Even General Alder asked Anacostia to keep her apprised of the progress, high praise indeed.
Imagine how they would be doing if Raelle weren't so totally distracted?
She got hit with guard duty because she couldn't get out of Scylla's bed on time.
Then, when a snooty Abigail spurned her offer of healing, she raced off in search of Scylla (somehow losing track of her) even though she knew she had to be back to training shortly.
Finally, she invites Scylla to what was essentially a unit-bonding exercise, unveiling her to Tally and Abigail.
Come to think of it, Scylla seems to have pretty free rein. She doesn't appear to have a roommate. She goes where she wants.
Maybe that's because Necros don't play well with others,...

Freeform unveils a bewitching new take on witches Wednesday night.
Motherland: Fort Salem, debuting at 9/8c, is the latest female-empowerment tale from Eliot Lawrence (the underappreciated Claws).
A project that Laurence has worked on for a decade, Motherland: Fort Salem is a gender-reversing alternate history set in modern-day America.
Thanks to a deal cut 300 years ago with the U.S. Government, witches agreed to fight for their country to end their persecution. Now wars are fought globally with magic.
Adding to the tension is a coven of terrorist witches known as the Spree, whose spells are causing mass suicides around the globe.
The 10-episode first season follows three young women from basic training in combat magic into terrifying early deployment.
In exclusive interviews, TV Fanatic spoke with four lead actresses about their characters and the world of Fort Salem.
First up is Abigail Bellweather, played by Ashley Nicole Williams.
