Famous video game designer Hideo Kojima’s love for the horror genre is no secret as he has often publically spoken about his affection for classic horror films and games. However, Kojima recently shared his love for the Taiwanese horror film Incantation in an offbeat if not disturbing way on social media.

Kojima took to social media to share a photograph that references a curse in the film, which is loosely based on a real incident. However, given the curse’s nature, Kojima might have lightened its effect by sharing it with everyone who follows him. As a result, netizens could not keep their cool about Kojima passing on the curse through social media.

If you wonder what motivates a band after three decades together, ask the Old 97’s. “It feels so unlikely that we’re here, in this moment, in our career and in our lives, and we’ve built something that’s really pretty unimpeachable,” Rhett Miller tells me. We’re sitting in his office — the basement room in his Hudson Valley, New York, home where he writes, seeks inspiration, and often streams solo shows online. “I don’t want to fuck it up.”

Justin Janowitz’s spellbinding feature debut, Do Not Watch, follows the tradition of cursed footage like 2018’s Antrum or 2022’s Incantation. Subliminal messages are baked into Ryan Toyama’s screenplay and imprinted onto the screen. Traditional barriers between screens and their audiences are shattered; characters plead with us to do what the title commends. Do Not Watch isn’t without shortcomings, but tantalizes as an innovative reinvention of found footage capabilities.
Toyama’s screenplay bounces between multiple timelines infected by the same film canister. An introductory info dump reads: “What you are about to witness is a compilation of the events surrounding the disappearance of a post-production crew as they worked on research footage from the 1980s.” Clips cycle around the mentioned post-production crew who works at Illusion Post, the supposed cursed footage of researchers in a bunker from the ‘80s, and the documentarians trying to unearth the truth about...

Rhett Miller bums a ride in the back of a pickup and receives the signs of his past and future in the video for “Where the Road Goes,” the Old 97’s’ new song that celebrates the band’s more than 30 years of longevity.
While Miller sings about various highs and lows of life and career (“from the bottom of a bottle to the palazzo/who knows where the road goes”), he sees the number 97 everywhere — on a highway sign, above a gas station — and also a ramshackle marquee announcing American Primitive,...

Faith is a powerful thing. There’s almost no limit to what can be accomplished when enough people share the same beliefs. However, this power can be easily misused, and a group of misguided believers can do a lot of damage during their search for enlightenment. That’s why it’s no surprise that there are so many scary movies about the dangers of cults.
From Rosemary’s Baby to Midsommar, filmmakers have been using these volatile groups to tell some incredibly chilling stories since the beginning of cinema, and that’s precisely why we’ve decided to compile a list highlighting six of the scariest cults in horror.
For the purposes of this list, we’ll be defining a “cult” as a fringe group of extreme believers bound by a shared (fictional) faith. And while we won’t be officially including it on the list due to a possible conflict of interests,...

Two titles which debuted at Cannes this year were named as the major prize-winners at the seventh edition of the Pingyao International Film Festival in China.
Wei Shujun’s black comedy-thriller “Only the River Flows” won the festival’s Fei Mu prize for best Chinese film. “Inside the Yellow Cocoon Shell,” by Vietnamese feature film debutant Pham Thien An, won the Roberto Rossellini prize for best international film. The picture is a Vietnam, Singapore, France, Spain co-production and won Cannes’ Camera d’Or for best first film.
Other prizes went to Hong Kong-based Norman Wang, a veteran consultant, marketeer and festival scout, and to Huang Jianxin, a leading mainland Chinese director-screenwriter and producer whose directing career has ranged from satire to propaganda. He also produced Sun Zhou’s Gong Li- and Tony Leung-starring “Zhou Yu’s Train.”

The found footage horror genre is fairly saturated by now, as it has become increasingly difficult to capture the gritty and realistic aura of "discovered" footage convincingly. This format, although effective, comes with its own limitations and genre tropes that can get tiring pretty soon, if not reined in with compelling storytelling. So, what makes Taiwanese found footage horror, "Incantation," so special that it received international acclaim the moment it premiered on Netflix? The answer to this is pretty layered: for one, "Incantation" uses standard tropes only to subvert them eventually, and utilizes a clever narrative gimmick to heighten fear among audiences as a collective. Unbeknownst to the viewer, "Incantation" becomes an interactive experience, irrespective of whether one chooses to interact or not.
No, this is not a direct, straightforward interactive narrative of the "Bandersnatch" variety where the viewer gets to make key choices to help branch the storyline towards different outcomes.

Cannibal Corpse have shared the music video for new song “Summoned for Sacrifice” ahead of their 16th studio album, Chaos Horrific, arriving September 22nd via Metal Blade.
The track is another filthy grinder from the death-metal masters. It’s as if the chords and arrangement were calculated specifically to keep the moshpit churning, with breakdowns and tempo changes piggy-backing off one another in a cascade of brutality. The accompanying performance clip only adds to the “live” feel of the song.
In a statement, drummer Paul Mazurkiewicz said the following about the fittingly gruesome lyrical content: “One person is randomly selected to die. Thirteen people are randomly selected to kill this person by violently removing pieces of his body until he breathes no more.”
Coinciding with the release of Chaos Horrific, Cannibal Corpse will embark on a month-long North American co-headlining jaunt with Mayhem and support acts Gorguts and Blood Incantation.

The occult/supernatural horror sub-genres has been going around for a while, with some international gems going seemingly unnoticed because of a lack of mainstream coverage. The Turkish Dabbe 4 and the Taiwanese Incantation are some of the scariest occult horror pieces that you could try out if you’re truly feeling adventurous. If you’d rather prefer some good ol’ American occult instead where young women are sacrificed to some pre-Biblical King of Hell, then Anthony Diblasi’s remake of his 2014 horror Last Shift is right up your alley. The 2023 supernatural horror Malum follows more-or-less the same plot as its predecessor, with slight tweaks here and there and a greater emphasis on the gore. The story follows Jessica, daughter of cop Will Loren, who returns to the soon-to-be-decommissioned police station where something diabolical happened one year ago. With a few changes to the approach and the way 2023’s Jessica is...

The slate of offerings from Taiwan at this year’s European Film Market is a solid one, without a doubt. Among the 92 titles of films and projects, there are recent Golden Horse award-winning titles as well as new regional and international co-productions, both completed or works in-progress, in a diverse range of genres that come with promising premises, and a delegation of at least 10 sales companies that will present at the event in Berlin.
Such a strong line-up of films available for international sales can be understood as a snapshot of current state of Taiwan cinema. There’s an emergence of a generation of new talent who dare to challenge the status quo of filmmaking and storytelling, and the ambition to reach an audience beyond the self-governed island is loud and clear. This is especially true following the international attention that “A Sun” and “The Falls” had previously garnered, the...

A full Free Movie of the Day is posted on the JoBlo Horror Movies YouTube channel every day of the week – but on Fridays things get even freakier and a little more fun. Get your weekend started the right way by indulging in Friday Fright Nights! Every Friday, we’ll be taking a look at another genre movie you can watch in its entirety, free of charge, either on the YouTube channel linked above or in the video embed here.
This week’s Friday Fright Nights feature is the witchcraft horror movie Incantation, which was written and directed by Eric Gibson… and which brought to mind something Stephen King mentioned in his book Danse Macabre. King suggested that the 1979 classic The Amityville Horror works as well as it does because of its subtext of economic unease. He jokingly said the movie could have been subtitled The Horror of the Shrinking Bank Account.

Following The Film Stage’s collective top 50 films of 2022, as part of our year-end coverage, our contributors are sharing their personal top 10 lists.
Three years after the pandemic broke out, things––including moviegoing––are finally starting to feel normal again. It would have been an even more joyous occasion if only 2022 has yielded a stronger crop of films to offer those rushing back to theaters.
Of course many, many good films came out in the last twelve months; great ones too––entertaining, informative, artistic works that anyone would be doing themselves a favor by checking out. But films that make you go for the M(asterpiece) word, that you know right away would be top 10 material? Not that many by my count. Ruben Östlund’s Triangle of Sadness, for example, is super fun and features awards-worthy performances from Zlatko Buric and Dolly De Leon, although I’m not sure if...

Soi Cheang Pou-soi’s crime thriller “Limbo” is the front-runner in the Golden Horse Film Awards, with 14 nominations. It is narrowly ahead of Taiwan-produced “Coo-Coo 043” and “Incantation,” which both have 13 nominations.
All three films compete for the best feature award, best director, supporting actor, art direction, makeup and costume design, original film score, film editing and sound effects.
The Taiwan-based Golden Horse Awards have long been considered as the most prestigious prize race for Chinese language films, but they have been boycotted by mainland Chinese films and filmmakers for the past three years on the order of mainland Chinese authorities. This followed a pro-Taiwan independence speech given from the stage in 2018 by a local prize winner.

A new month has arrived, which means a fresh batch of movies and TV shows streaming on Netflix. Most monumentally, the beginning of the month saw the conclusion of “Stranger Things 4,” which began back in May but is just now finishing up. (There’ll be one more season before the series winds down.) Other new Netflix original series this month include the horror-comedy “Boo, Bitch,” the fourth season of “Virgin River” and the fifth season of all-ages animated spin-off “Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous” (which we’ve heard has some surprising connections to this summer’s blockbuster “Jurassic World: Dominion”).
On the Netflix original films side of things, the biggest new release is undoubtedly “The Gray Man.” A nonstop action extravaganza from Joe and Anthony Russo, the directing duo behind “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgmane,” it stars Chris Evans and Ryan Gosling as dueling spies. The Taiwan Pavilion returns to the Marché du Film this year with a beefed-up version after two years of interruption due to the Covid-19 pandemic, presenting 91 titles including the latest box office hits at home, elaborate international co-productions, as well as technology-driven Xr projects.
Genre films with a solid plot and production, rather than a stellar cast, can easily win the hearts of audiences at home, according to filmmakers behind some of the featured projects.
International co-productions will continue to play a vital role in boosting local opportunities as well as taking Taiwan talents abroad, but the ongoing pandemic restrictions on the self-governed island will certainly have an impact on making international connections.
