It’s an intense time on the Discovery this week, as Captain Lorca gets kidnapped by Klingons, we meet the immediately infamous Harry Mudd (Rainn Wilson), and Lt. Stamets makes a bold but rash decision.
[Editor’s note: Spoilers for Season 1, Episode 5, “Choose Your Pain” follow.]
Not One Big Happy Family (Yet?)
When you compare “Discovery” to other “Trek” series, one aspect that stands out is the comparatively small size of the cast.
There’s a new addition this week, though, after Lorca brings on board Lieutenant Ash Tyler (Shazad Latif), whose status as a former prisoner seems like it’s left him pretty messed up. The engineering team of Stamets, Tilly, and Burnham has coalesced into a fun trio, and all of Burnham’s interactions with Saru are interesting, given how those characters have a deep backstory.
However, the cast in general hasn’t really come together yet as a full ensemble, which speaks to the unconventional nature of the plotting here,...

I first heard of Spiderbands when one of my Tough Mudder teammates told me he was becoming an instructor. The name sounded like a theme park ride for thrill-seekers, but I was intrigued. Although I’m admittedly not the biggest fan of heights, Spiderbands — which offers a full-body workout using resistance bands dangling from the studio’s ceiling — sounded too badass to not try out. Mandy Moore ran into a little drama at home on Thursday night … literally.
The This Is Us star took to Instagram on Friday to share a selfie of her bruised, stitched-up face after she apparently injured herself via her shower door handle. Moore, 33, needed stitches after the accident, so she called Los Angeles-based Dr. David Stoker, who made a house call after hours.
“Shower door handle — 1, Mandy — 0,” she quipped. “Real talk: How does a girl get rid of a black eye pronto? Any helpful hints (minus ice and arnica??)”
“Thanks @stokerplasticsurgery for coming in at 9 p.m. to sew me up!

So You Think You Can Dance might only get an hour of weekly airtime this summer — but the Fox series knows how to wring every last drop of drama out of those 60 minutes.
Now that the Academy contestants — well, most of them — have survived the hip-hop round, Monday’s episode presented the remaining hopefuls with back-to-back challenges: contemporary and ballroom.
In the hour that followed, a number of seemingly finale-bound dancers were eliminated — and, weirdly, it was their All-Star coaches who did most of the crying. Below, let’s recap the four biggest moments from Monday’s installment:

While doing press in January for the third season of “Playing House,” co-creators, writers, stars and real-life best friends Jessica St. Clair and Lennon Parham hinted that they shared a major bonding experience that they had written into the show. But they decided to keep mum about it until early May, when St. Clair revealed in a post on the StandUp2Cancer website that she had underwent treatment for breast cancer, with her best friend by her side every step of the way.

The duo had worried that introducing such a serious storyline into the show wouldn’t feel organic or that it would overpower the comedy, but that fear was unfounded. “Playing House” is funnier, more in tune with its beating heart of comedy than ever, because of how the battle with cancer brought the two friends closer together.
Making the series after that was an exercise in gratitude, and the show exudes positivity, hope and joy through every line and scene. If anything, “Playing House” balances out its humor and multiple storylines so well that it’s actually easy to forget that the cancer plot is coming until it happens. And then bam — right there amidst the laughter — a feeling of being blindsided and stunned. And then come the tears.
This is what sets “Playing House” and a few other powerful comedies apart from the pack — their ability to bring genuine pathos and character growth into a genre that usually favors cautious inertia. The series is fearless: It’s unafraid to change, to evolve, to grow up.
When the show began, Maggie (Parham) left her cheating husband just before she’s about to have their baby. Her best friend Emma (St. Clair) leaves behind her job overseas to move in with Maggie to help raise the baby together. But this season, it’s Maggie who’s supportive of Emma through the hard times. In between single motherhood and cancer, the friends are consistently there for each other through all the changes: reentering the world of dating (with a hot new British doctor played by Ben Willbond), turning 40, having a healthy relationship with exes, career changes, and raising children. Aging isn’t a cause for mourning or denial, but is celebrated and yes, mocked mercilessly.

What’s beautiful about their relationship is that Maggie doesn’t even hesitate to answer in the most earnest and detailed manner possible. Oh yes, “Playing House” is crass, inappropriate, silly, but most of all vital. This season might be about embracing all the ups and downs of age 40, but it doesn’t act its age. Emma and Maggie’s lust for life and sharing is infectious, so much so that a new character introduced in the first episode gets visibly verklempt after hearing about the extent of the women’s friendship. Nobody is immune to the power of their triumphant and gleeful bond.
As strong as their friendship is though, it is not exclusive. Characters on the show get swept up in their wake, only to be embraced as extended family. And while some of the scenes featuring these characters without the benefit of the Bff presence or chemistry falter a bit, that too is part of the growing and learning process. This season we see more of exes Mark (Keegan-Michael Key), Bruce (Brad Morris), Zach (Zach Woods) and even Tina, aka “Bird Bones” (Lindsay Sloane), among a slew of others who are game to ditch their dignity for laughs. And in a way, we the audience are invited into that circle of friends as well.
St. Clair and Parham deciding to incorporate their partnered cancer battle into the show isn’t just brave or smart; it’s generous. And that’s true of how the show has operated from the beginning. Sure, their friendship is a pleasure to watch and even aspirational in its strength, but sharing it in all of its imperfect glory — warts, tumors and all — is the ultimate in honest communication, trust and building a community. We’ve been invited into the house to play, and it’s exactly where we want to be.
Grade: B+

It’s been just over two weeks since fans of Netflix’s most odd, original and heartfelt TV show found out that the streaming giant would not be renewing “Sense8” for a third season. In those two weeks, many petitions have been sent and many protests raised, to the point where Netflix had to release a follow-up statement to fans explaining that it really did try to bring the show back, but “unfortunately we can’t.”
However, they should. They really, really should, at least in the form of a feature-length film, as we first saw suggested by redditor PrivateFrank, but echoing other shows that received a post-cancellation one-off conclusion following their release. Below are the reasons why it makes sense for Netflix to do it — for the fans, for the creators and for Netflix itself.

Real talk: “Talk Show The Game Show” will penalize a guest for murder, but it adheres to strict guidelines for what that means. “If you murder someone during the course of the game, we don’t have to wait for the entire legal process to play out in the state of California,” host and creator Guy Branum said. “[Head judge] Casey Schreiner can just put you in the penalty box for a period of time, possibly even throw you out of the game.

Whitney Way Thore is no stranger to body shaming, but she was particularly disturbed by a piece of hate mail she allegedly recently received from a doctor in California.
The My Big Fat Fabulous Life star, 32, shared a photo on Facebook on Tuesday night of a letter she claims she received from someone who credits themselves as an M.D., in which the author says the cause of her weight gain is “plain old gluttony” rather than polycystic ovarian syndrome and goes on to call her a “big fat pig.”
“There is nothing about your life that is ‘fabulous,’ ” the letter reads.

When three at-home pregnancy tests all had positive results, Whitney Way Thore was shocked, nervous, and as someone with polycystic ovarian syndrome, thrilled that she could actually become pregnant. Which made finding out that they were all false positives — and that she wasn’t actually pregnant — difficult to take in.
“I started thinking that maybe this was meant to be, because I’ve always been worried that I wouldn’t be able to get pregnant. So that’s what made it all the more traumatic,” Thore, 32, tells People. “Even though the doctor said that I was never pregnant, I thought that I was.

Over the weekend, director David Ayer shared his honest, candid thoughts regarding Suicide Squad after a fan reached out to him and thanked Ayer for his work on the film, calling it a "masterpiece." I wouldn't call it a masterpiece, but it certainly was an awesome film that I had a blast watching.
After thanking the fan for his kind words, Ayer talked in great length about the film and the good and bad aspects of it. One thing he wishes he would have done differently was make The Joker the main villain. He posted the following note on Twitter:
Thank you so much. I know it's a controversial film, I really tried to make something different, with a look and a voice of its own."I took inspiration from the insanity of the original comics. Making a movie is a journey, not a straight line. I learned so much.

Make no mistake, the DC Extended Universe isn’t necessarily off to the greatest start. Man of Steel was divisive, and both Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad were critically panned. On the bright side of it all, the last two films made a decent chunk of change for Warner Bros., and despite all their flaws, there are some really great aspects of both films. Perhaps it’s in that light that many fans are so frustrated. In seeing glimpses of greatness in these films, it makes their quality all the more frustrating (cue all the comments telling us these movies had No glimpses of greatness).
Suicide Squad was a particularly interesting beast. This was a film that was cut together on the heels of the release of Batman v Superman. As we all recall, the big criticism from that flick was that the tone was too dark (there were a lot of other criticisms,...

A look-back at the previous attempts to bring Archie to TV before they got it right with Riverdale...
When Riverdale premieres on the CW on January 26th, it will mark a milestone for Archie Comics - the first time in the company's 75-year history that its characters will truly shine on television. A mix of gleefully ridiculous kitsch with standout performances and some truly smart writing, the series is poised to be 2017's breakout TV hit.
See related Shane Black: a career retrospective Zack Snyder interview: Batman V Superman
That said, it took a while for Archie to get to this point. There have been many attempts to bring Archie and his friends to TV before, but these all suffered for either being shoddily animated (the various 1960s cartoons), misguided (1990's Archie: To Riverdale and Back Again), or just plain, um, weird (the X-Files cash-in Archie's Weird Mysteries...

Real talk: everyone goes through that childhood awkward phase, even a former Miss Universe. Before Olivia Culpo dominated the beauty pageant scene and became a social media style star, the 24-year-old admitted she was a “late bloomer” in her cover story for the January issue of Ocean Drive magazine.

If anyone can teach you how to choose the very best pieces for you, it's the person who did the designing. One of the many luxuries that comes with being a celeb is you have direct access to resources that other people don't—like fashion designers. When stars do eventually venture out to shop for themselves (because, let's be honest, they have stylists for that), what I imagine happens is they have their assistant(s) make some calls, and in no time, said celeb and said designer are frolicking around the shop, chatting and trying on the latest and greatest from the most recent collection…and then visit ends in a hefty sale. Real talk: I'll probably never know for sure, but what happened to...

Last Week’S Review: ‘The Well-Tempered Clavier’ Goes Down the Rabbit Hole For Answers
Diagnostic Report
Well. That happened. For the record, we have no idea what a Season 2 of this show looks like. We just know that Holy Smokes this finale sure aired.
“Westworld” confirmed a lot of things in its extra-long finale — specifically, the fact that William’s adventures in the park were from an earlier time than the rest of the narrative, and that Maeve’s decision to revolt would lead to her freedom… sort of. One of the most shocking revelations: The rampage Teddy remembers Wyatt going on? That was actually executed by Dolores. Wyatt, it seems, was never truly real.
The other most important plot points: Maeve has made her escape… though she’s looped back to find her “daughter.” The board has made the necessary moves to remove Ford from his position of authority,...

Today, on Election Day, the months-long slog that pitted Hillary Clinton against Donald Trump will finally come to an end. The end of election season also means the end of politically-charged ads, but right before the wire, a Conservative Super Pac launched an unusual campaign. As shared by Adweek, the Congressional Leadership Fund devised a web series called Real Talk With Ruth to reach voters in eight contested Congressional districts.
Real Talk With Ruth, in a clear attempt to appeal to young voters, is styled to look like a vlog. “Ruth” is an upbeat young woman, and her videos are set in a hip-looking coffee shop with exposed brick walls. The content of Real Talk With Ruth, however, is quite different from a typical vlog. Beyond the 19 films and TV shows that make up official on-screen “Star Trek” canon, there are quite a few more efforts that could, philosophically, be a part of this list.
There’s the rich legacy of officially licensed novels and comic books that brought the characters to life in print form. There’s the technology invented by production designers that eventually became real-life wizardry. There’s the 1999 film “Galaxy Quest” — technically a parody, but spiritually one of the best “Star Trek” movies ever made.

Real talk, though: Why are swimsuits so expensive? Sure, you're practically living in your water-friendly duds. (Selena Gomez is, at least.) However, if at any point you felt like you may have overpaid for those two triangles held together by a string, you're not alone. It's pretty customary for luxury-designer anything to cost an arm and a leg, but even indie-label bathing suits can set you back a pretty penny. Considering how little fabric, need for embellishments and wear you'll get from swimwear (compared to, say, handbags or shoes), do we really need to shell out the big bucks to be water-bound? We found out. Quality Will Cost You: Apparently, the best swimwear fabric comes out of...

Real talk: What did you really think of Selena Gomez's dress? Style, at its best, is subjective—but post-2016 Met Gala, fashion critics neither really praised nor condemned Selena's Louis Vuitton look. Commentary on the "Hands to Myself" singer's ensemble was polite (perhaps as to not offend her die-hard fan base). Helin Jung, of Cosmo, called her frock "low-key for fashion's biggest event of year," while others described her look as "relaxed" or "pared-down." Feedback was complimentary but didn't actually address what worked or didn't—and therein lies the problem. Because, in my opinion, I think Selena was one of best dressed stars on the red...
