Gripping

Having grown up in Miami in the 80's I thought I knew everything there was to know about "el Mariel", but this documentary brought the stories of myriad personalities to life. From those leaving in search of religious freedom to those seeking to express their sexuality freely to those who hungered for a chance to make a better life for themselves - each person spoke with candor, and sometimes even humor about the odyssey they took part in. The contrast of black and white footage of Cuba during the "glory days" shortly after Catro's victory juxtaposed with the faded colos of modern day Havana are the perfect backdrop for this tale of joy and anguish. I felt that the movie's handling of the "criminal element" that arrived via Mariel was fair and objective. Both my teenage daughter and myself were mesmerized!

Wow

This is easily going to be one of the most influential documentaries of all time. It has the chance of influencing future foreign policy toward the Cuban government and I think it will cause more support toward the policy of asylum for those citizens from Cuba who land in the United States. Dr. Garcia is very brave for doing this work and I commend him for it. I have the tremendous privilege of knowing him personally as my teacher, adviser for my fraternity, and mentor. The film has already won best documentary at the Gasparilla Film Festival and I am certain that it will receive many more! Congrats on a huge success to all of the production crew and of course to Dr. Jose Garcia. Go see this documentary or order it when it is out of DVD/blueray!

Very good book

At the point when I discovered I would have been perusing this book I resembled some other understudy at that point, "Why the damnation am I being compelled to peruse another book on top of the relative multitude of different books I've been relegated this semester?" So I got my duplicate of Voices of Mariel and soon our educator alloted us the primary section. The night I needed to peruse that part I returned to my grounds condo. Snatched a hot pocket and a few mixed refreshments for an evening of perusing parts from a few distinct books. In the wake of perusing the sections I expected to for different books I was relegated, I completed the night with the primary part of Voices of Mariel. Before I started I snatched another hot pocket and another mixed drink since I thought I planned to require it. Nonetheless, I wasn't right. When I began perusing the book I found that it was an amazingly simple perused. Not at all that thumps the nature of the material. The book was really fascinating. To find out about the battles that these individuals suffered under a socialist system and the mass departure that occurred during that time was educational. When I began perusing this book I didn't require a solitary mixed drink to get me through it. That evening I read something beyond the main part. I required up understanding four and experienced difficulty putting the book down whenever I was done for the evening. I praise the creator for having the option to dazzle the battles these individuals suffered and put it into a bit of writing that can instruct ages to come about the agony that these individuals have endured and the harm socialism has caused.

The most eye-opening book!

Prior to reading this book I had no knowledge about what the Mariel Boat was and it's affects on the people then, and still to this day. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and it blew my mind that so many people had to go though this terrible time in Cuba. The movie for this book is also fantastic and is a must see after reading. It paints a picture of what truly happened in Cuba before and after the boat lift. For those who want a book that will make them question the government and what they are capable of, this is the book for you. I have the privilege of knowing Dr. Garcia as a my professor and I'd like to congratulate him for the success of his book!

Great Read.Teaches us about an important part of history that is often neglected.

This book teaches us about an important part of history that is often neglected. It is a good read for anyone interested in American and Cuban history. It tells the story of Jose Manuel Garcia and the other Cubans that desperately tried to escape Fidel Castro's rule.

Dr. Jose Garcia shares personal stories from the Mariel boatlift in 1980.

Dr. Garcia shares his experience with the Mariel boatlift as well as many others. Garcia has many interviews with Cubans and Marielitos, and asks about their experience, and what their thoughts were of the Cuban boatlift. We also get to see some of the Marielitos success since coming to the United States.
