The monomymic Vikram is one of my favorite Indian actors. He has, over the course of 25 years, created an amazing body of work that is unlike anything else I can think of. He divides his time between mainstream masala performances, smaller more serious projects, and balls-out weirdo performances in a manner that demands respect. His latest film coming to cinema screens, Iru Mugan, appears to fall into the balls-out weirdo category.Over the last 15 years he has starred in big budget blockbusters as a multiple-personality disordered Jheri-curled vigilante in Anniyan, a chicken-suited superhero in Kanthaswamy, a mentally disabled father fighting to gain custody of his daughter in Deiva Thirumagal, and a bodybuilder cum hunchbacked avenger in I. There isn't much in the way of...

I've been waiting for Tamil blockbuster machine Shankar to impress me for several years, following the (critical) disappointment of Nanban. While Shankar's international star saw a little bit of light following the West's discovery of 2010 insane-athon Enthiran (Robot), he hasn't done anything worth noting outside of Tamil film since. It looks like that is about to change, and in a huge way.Shankar's latest project is a film titled I or Ai, depending on who you ask. The film stars Vikram, best known to Twitch readers as either the star of the chicken-suited superhero masterpiece, Kanthaswamy, or of the delirious-looking I Am Sam rip-off, Deiva Thirumagal. What you probably don't know is that Vikram is a ham of epic proportions and his performance as the...

Chennai, April 7: Child artist Sara Arjun is the real star of upcoming Tamil family-drama "Saivam", says its director Vijay, who is completely in awe of the little girl's performance.
He has already worked with her in his film "Deiva Thirumagal".
"She has transformed herself so well since we worked the last time. She is the hero of 'Saivam'. She's the real star of the film. When you see the film, you'll realize that she carries the story on her shoulders. I'm sure she's going to floor the audience with her performance," Vijay told Ians.
"Saivam" is about the relationship between Sara and her pet fowl named Papa,.

Bejoy Nambiar burst onto the Indian film scene back in 2011 with his crime spree film, Shaitan. With the help of some pretty impressive critical reaction the film managed to more than triple its budget in box office receipts, opening some eyes at bigger production houses. Among those interested was Reliance Big Pictures, who are producing his latest effort, the bilingual triptych/diptych David. As is common in an increasingly interconnected India, David was shot simultaneously in Hindi and Tamil language versions. Most of the supporting cast is the same, however the only lead to appear in both versions is Vikram (Kanthaswamy, Deiva Thirumagal, Aniyaan). In the Hindi version he is joined by Neil Nitin Mukesh (New York, 7 Khoon Maaf) and Vinay as the trio...

Utv Motion Pictures has today announced the release date for Ghanchakkar as June 21, 2013.
Comic-thriller Ghanchakkar is directed by Rajkumar Gupta and stars Emraan Hashmi and Vidya Balan in the lead. This is the 3rd film in a row for Rajkumar Gupta and Utv after Aamirand No One Killed Jessica. The film has music by composer Amit Trivedi and lyrics by Amitabh Bhattacharya.
About the movie
Ghanchakkar narrates the story of the protagonist (Emraan) who is an ex-conman named Sanju. He is laid back and has a taste for finer things in life. The problem is – he has an ambitious wife (played by Vidya) with her own notions of the world and therefore gets sucked into a ‘chakkar’ and has to suffer two thugs in the process – one with a bad ailment and one with a bad sense of humour, leading to madness, confusion and chaos and unleashing some mad cap characters in his life.

It's only been a couple of years since Ronnie Screwvala took his multimedia conglomerate, Utv Motion Pictures, into the south of India. Utv is the biggest studio in India, and in 2011, the controlling stake in the company's stock was purchased by The Walt Disney Corporation. This transition has really seemed to up the speed at which Utv seeks to take over all of Indian cinema, not just the Hindi film industry, on which they've had a very firm grip for the better part of a decade. In the service of that goal, they've released several big budget features with big South Indian stars including Arya (Naan Kadavul) in Vettai, Kamal Hassan in Unnaipol Oruvan, and Vikram in last year's breakout hit, Deiva Thirumagal. The...

The first full trailer for Chiyaan Vikram's new Kollywood masala blowout, Rajapattai is online. Vikram has been recently featured on these pages for the recent critical and box office darling, Deiva Thirumagal. This was the I Am Sam clone featuring dinosaurs attacking a colonial village and a man fighting a giant snake. Vikram is also a veteran of many high profile successful Indian blockbusters like Kanthaswamy, about a superhero in a chicken suit, and Anniyan, where he played a crazy haired serial killer.I can't quite get a grip on what Rajapattai is actually about. If you trust Wikipedia, the story either, "revolves around the issue of land grabbing and how the protagonist becomes involved in it", or, "Vikram is currently filming for Rajapattai alongside Deeksha...

Anushka Shetty the leading lady in the Southern Industry has indeed come a long way. Whether it’s a performance oriented role or glamorous role she has carried it off with elan.
"Performance-oriented roles will live in the minds of the audience for a long time when compared to glamorous ones. The latter only gives short-lived joy. I understood this with films like Arundhathi and Deiva Thirumagal," says Anushka.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 cuts a swathe through the nation's multiplexes, felling other films in its wake
The winner
The final film in a much-loved series of consistent box-office winners. Favourable reviews and colossal publicity. The bonus of a price premium in screens projecting in 3D. There were plenty of signs indicating enormous commercial success for the final Harry Potter film, but, even so, the UK numbers went beyond industry predictions: £23.75m in just three days. For context, it has taken Transformers: Dark of the Moon – a film that has hardly been a slouch at the UK box office – 19 days to reach a similar figure.
Before the arrival of Deathly Hallows Part 2, the biggest ever opening weekend at the UK box office was achieved by the previous entry in the Potter franchise, Deathly Hallows Part 1, with £18.32m. Next comes Quantum of Solace, with £15.38m. In other words,...

Okay, so we all laughed at the ridiculous trailer for Vijay's Deiva Thirumagal, and rightly so. The Tamil unofficial remake (read: rip-off) of Sean Penn's disastrous I Am Sam not only featured what looked to be astoundingly insensitive portrayal of a man with autism or some other developmental disability, but also featured giant fucking snakes, dinosaurs, a battle sequences straight out of Lord of the Rings, and hand puppets. If that isn't fodder for mockery, what is? Well, if you read the Indian media reviews, which I do, you'd be surprised to hear that Deiva Thirumagal is setting Chennai movie houses on fire. Audiences are leaving the theatre in tears, the good kind, at the overwhelming emotional sentiments in the film. Frankly, I would like...
