The Probe was made as an entry for the 48 Hour Film Competition in Austin, Texas in 2009. It did not win any prizes in any category but was screened anyway because it was a crowd favorite and because it only lost the Audience Award in its group by one vote.
The competition team that made The Probe was made up of more beginners than professionals. Camera operator, Eric Thompson, for instance had never operated an SLR camera before and struggled with the concepts of aperture and shutter speed.
Only one high quality copy of the film exits. Because of an accident with a hard drive, the only existing copy of The Probe is an avi file that happened to be on the desktop of producer, Anne LaBarbera when the drive was lost. There are back up tapes for the footage but the project itself might never be recovered.
