Just what we needed
calinstelistu013 March 2022
This episode is pretty much exactly what we needed given the Russia/Ukraine situation. Them mocking Putin was absolutely glorious. The Mr. Mackey stuff did feel a bit meh to me, but I can look past it. Also, there's a scene involving Butters' horse that I didn't expect but made me laugh hard.

My only gripe with it, and the reason I'm not giving it a 10/10 is the fact that I feel they could have mocked Putin even more. Something similar to what they did to Bin Laden in the post 9/11 episode would have been sweet. But still, the episode is great, best one of the season so far.

Wheres the old south park?
rwburkey-657754 March 2022
Not a bad episode, but feel as if they only scratched the surface on what they could have satirized. So much has happened the past two years which has given them so much writing material, or so you would believe. Hopefully Parker and Stone fine their mojo once again.

South Park lost its edge
fdorreboom6 March 2022
Parker and Stone really have lost their edge. Wasn't a fan of their serialization attempts in the last couple seasons. It seems they have lost their skill to make great standalone episodes now. Both, their political and their just boys doing fun stuff standalone episodes no longer work :( They are just boring, sadly.

You all are pussies grow some balls

I can't believe you people went through 25 seasons of South Park but still get offended over them making light of serious topics. How tf did you guys do it? South Park has consistently been entertaining and unique to other shows always I am extremely grateful for that and them not being afraid to joke around even with the war going on right now...not even in an offensive way it's just a joke and it was funny!

If somehow you got offended just leave. If you didn't find any of this entertaining then maybe South Park isn't for you anymore and that's fine...just stop watching :)

It needed more commentary
ericstevenson4 March 2022
This episode is all about characters going back to the Cold War. I will admit it was weird how there was no mention of Ukraine. I thought that Melancholy was a female horse at first. I'm just too used to watching "My Little Pony". I do like the relationship Mr. Mackey had with his mom. We're all getting older.

It's just funny to see an old woman with a huge head. Mr. Mackey using old technology was pretty funny. It did seem to get too vulgar with Melancholy. I am glad Butters was the one riding him. He likes riding himself, if you know what I mean. ***

A take I expected but also I didn't
gianlucajd18 March 2022
I've always noticed how South Park depicts current events and topics and tells the story through a completely random scope, It was definitely like that however, I didn't particularly find this scope amazingly funny, generally the scenes with Mr Macky, Linda and Steve etc were hilarious just because they're generally funny characters, but in all, it felt a little rushed. It almost felt like they tried to cram so much into 22 minutes.

Welcome to South Park. A town of sarcasm and cynicism
iggles363 March 2022
This has been the best episode since season 18. Everything that makes South Park the show that it had been was oozing out like Melancholy's massive dumps. Pay attention to the little references. If you're in your 50's or a fan of 80's culture, there's a lot of nostalgia. If you're overly politically motivated, you may get pissed off at this episode If you do take the episode too personally because of your political beliefs... Get over it, dude. It's South Park! M'kay.

The horse is Russia
theos_710 March 2022
Seems no one got the joke. Butters horse represents Russia as uncivilized and inevitably going to do whatever it wants despite the shock to bourgeois sensibilities.

a weirdly funny adventure
cnmar3 March 2022
I love south park and this episode was just amazing with it showing off people thinking that all Russians are communists and people in fear of the possible next word war. The only part i did not like was the graphic horse on horse sex scene although the slide whistle whenever the horse got a boner was still funny.

Warning: Spoilers
Stuff with mr Mackey was funny but rather the b story be about Pc principal being a russian spy than the horse thing would off been better.unless they revist it.

Bizarre
beavisintheflesh4 March 2022
It was very bizarre, but not exactly funny either. And the satire on Russia/Ukraine wasn't as strong as I expected from SP either. As much as I miss the old format, if the stand-alone episodes continue to be weak, I'd rather them do the dramedy/serialized format, because it seems like that's where their hearts are nowadays. Excluding The Big Fix, the episodes introduce funny ideas, but fail to follow them up with strong humor or social commentary. I love South Park so I do hope they can recover from this slump though.

Welcome back to South Park
devinhaslebacher13 March 2022
Ahhh yes, finally, this felt like an old school episode from the show's glory days! It's polarizing and offensive and politically topical while being unapologetically cynical, irreverent, nonsensical, and gut burstingly funny. They aim to offend, and they do a damn good job. For the people saying they are "taking russias side", remember that south park doesn't take sides and offends everyone equally. Because, in reality, they are just doing what they have always done. Telling us all that we are stupid and showing us why it's true.

They shouldn't blame the country just because of one man
Laqshayaroraofficial3 March 2022
One time watch average episode with cool ending but they shouldn't blame the entire country just because of one angry man! It would have been better if stan, kyle and Cartman were there too. Still I am glad they made an Episode on this topic!

Silly, but not necessarily funny.
sanghelios3 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Don't get me wrong, the episode was entertaining. I like South Park enough to be able to watch whole episodes and this episode's story, dialogue, etc was enough to keep me engaged. Like the title says though, despite not having a bad time watching, the episode wasn't really what I'd consider to be "funny". I understood the humor but it never had me actually laughing.

I know it's been said a thousand times but I really miss when South Park didn't piggyback so hard on whatever the hottest issue/drama of the time is. (I definitely don't mean to belittle the Ukraine Russian war in anyway.) In this episode in particular, I just feel like the need to intertwine it into the Butters story, and the whole thing with Mackey felt really awkward and diluted. It worked better in the episode The Big Fix, but not so much in Back To The Cold War.

Did Towelie wrote this episode?
trolliyama9 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The problem is not the "political commentary" or something like that.

The problem is that the plot was completely nonsensical, and not in a funny way.

The whole episode feels as something Towelie would have written after getting high.

Meh, but the ending's pretty good
crazelord15 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
South Park in general has still been killing it and this season has been great overall, but this was definitely a blander episode. The general joke didn't really land for me. Though it's pretty funny at the end, but just makes me think the whole episode should have been like that.

I think it would have been better if they went completely in on the premise and the whole town got panicked about the cold war returning and it went full 80s (like the skiing episode from way back in the day).

But just a few characters getting carried away with everyone else acting pretty normal just makes it all very "meh". And why ponies? I get that they needed some backdrop to make an homage to cold war sports films of US vs Russians but were Pony shows ever popular back then?

Seems like the joke is that it's such a mild thing being taken very seriously, but it really doesn't get that intense for anyone except for a few people. Maybe that's the joke? Like that no one really cares?

Eventually it does dive deeper into Mackiey use of the situation to live out nostalgic fantasy and trying to avoid the ravages of age, with a good scene between Mackey and his Mom, but it didn't really do much to lead there besides being mostly throwbacks to things back then. Doesn't really earn that emotional climax.

One of the best new episodes. Matt and Trey painted a masterpiece here in 2022.
tomdegroot-5722428 March 2022
Kids here's your masterpiece of South Park art.

Brilliant writing that's engaging and incredibly well thought. Paired with stunning old school South Park humor/comedy that is unmatched, while retaining brillance.. The South Park balance and recipe that produces some of the best episodes. Period.

This is one of the those political episodes that will stand the test of time and always be rewatchable. The 80s references and mocking and so much more without spoiling is really platinum tier. Most political episodes I find can fall short of rewatch value due to current events weighing so heavily vs past events, but south park has produced a good handful of episodes that don't fall into that. This is one of them. A good example is "Little bit rock and little bit country" episode, tackling a hot button political issue at the time, but remains relevant and rewatchable today. Then you have some political episodes in the Obama/Trump field that are some great, yes, but most/some falling out of rewatch discussion.

From someone who watched s1 when it aired on tv. - this season has be strong but this episode was a step above from what I've seen lately. It was Trey and Matt showing maturity and brillance while dosing the episode with old school comedy.

Matt and Trey painted a masterpiece here and hope to see more follow suite. The near perfect deliver of old school south park comedy and brilliant writing on hot topics is peak south park.

Awesome-o

I'm blown away its rated so poorly. Matt and Trey Masterpiece.

Nice Take on Russia-Ukraine Crisis
justinagable-987054 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The episodes mocks the Cold War nostalgia that the Democrats embraced for the last five years. The episode satirize how Americans discriminate against ethnic Russians. The vulgarity of Butter's melancholy horse is hilarious. I loved how the episode portrayed Putin as being shirtless to prove his masculinity, and the revelation that his penis doesn't work so well anymore. I wonder if Putin will ban South Park now, like the clinically insane Winnie the Pooh of the Orient. "South Park" knows how to portray both sides as ridiculous during controversies and this episode did this as well.

South Park has always been political/on the nose. This just wasn't there.
rrivecatt5 March 2022
The whole episode just felt so... off. The pacing was odd and seemed like they didn't really have much to say on the matter. Mr. Mackey was already established with his younger self much differently in prior episodes and it just didn't really mend well in my opinion.

Props to South Park for being so quick to the draw, unfortunate the messaging kinda wasn't there.

eh it's kinda boring
FlaggyFlaggy8 March 2022
To be honest I thought this would be better because usually butters and mr mackey always are great but this was just definition of "Ok" or "Below Average".

I wish it actually touched more on the realistic factor of what's going on but instead they decide not even to mention ukraine which like why? Bad potty humor as well which usually is a thing only south park can get right but not in this episode unfortunately :/

when you feel obligated to trivialize Putin threat...
SophieT58 July 2022
I've religiously watched every episode of the south park since I was very young. I've loved this show and these guys way more than I can easily criticize them; but during the past 20 years I've witnessed that some episodes haven't aged well ( some even have their own admission attached) and let's just say... This episode is gonna be one of them.

Empty and Uninspired
alexsalazarberzunza14 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Member when it was previously established in s12e14 that Mr. Mackey was clueless about computers and coding?

The episode felt pretty empty to me. No humor, no quotable moments, but also not a deep insight into the problem like south park usually does. The plot advances pretty arbitrarily and conveniently so it all feels forced and unnatural. Could see the erectile dysfunction joke happening against Putin the moment it was brought up too.

I know it's supposed to be absurd, but the way the characters link the pony-thing event to Russia justifying their attack on its outcome came out of nowhere. I think I'd have liked garrison being racist and patriotic, having been president and all, and tweek being paranoid.

PD. I know there's a huge difference between 80's coding and today's technology but I still defend that I felt surprised to see Mackey being at all skilled in that.
