What's English for Worse Than Manure With Less Usefulness?
gmerin30 January 2011
This was released as The Next Race a few months earlier. Even after adding about 5 minutes of stock news footage at the beginning it is just as bad, so here is my review of The Next Race as it applies equally well to this drecht.

Was this bad. The English language fails in that there is no word or combination of words that sufficiently expresses just how bad this garbage is. If it was flushed down the toilet the bacteria that normally processes waste matter would refuse to touch this movie.

a few months later the producers decided the editing was at fault, so they re-edited this, making no improvements at all, and re-released it in 2010 as The Dark Metropolis.

Upon flushing this down the toilet the same bacteria that refused to process it in its earlier incarnation, upon realizing it was in fact the same garbage with a different name, committed suicide.

if only the producers would take bacteria's hint.

straight up sucks
michaelh562001-900-1279846 February 2011
Warning: Spoilers
I would give this film minus numbers if it were possible it sucks - sucks - sucks - it is a crime to waste valuable resources on this pile of pure unadulterated crap. The acting sucks , the story sucks , it is poorly written and the acting is even worse than the writing. I feel as I have been robbed of 97 minutes of my life and Mr. Stewart St John should be banned forever from the directors chair, from writing i noticed that he is on Facebook and that is where i am heading next. I am angry at myself for being optimistic I kept hoping it would get better but it just kept getting worse. The idea is actually pretty good but the execution just plane .....SUCKS!!! I give this a rating of minus 99

One of the worst movies ever made!
anthonyazeir1323 April 2011
it's such a shame to see so many wonderful talented directors and scripts, never seeing light because of budgeting reasons and then again, see such projects being made.

This movie, is really bad... Too much dark scenes... Well, it's called dark metropolis... But boy this movie is dark we can barely see the actors... The first 5 minutes of the movie are promising... the concept is good although we seen much of it before. But the movie fails to impress... the directing is lame the characters are so shallow...the dialog is so unrealistic...obviously trying to make us understand what we cant through the movie. the fight scenes are so un-professionally made...Didn't they have a monitor while shooting?

Am sorry for the makers of this film... if we can call it so!

ambitious sci-fi
jkhaldi6 August 2011
Warning: Spoilers
I read the comic book prequel to this movie in the bottom of my comic con bag and found there was a movie so I checked it out. Its very low budget so this review takes that into consideration unlike some of the other reviews I've read here. The story is ambitious and compelling... but it moves slowly. If you go in expecting tons of action and sci-fi, you will not find it. If you go in wanting a story, interesting characters and hints of biblical references, then you'll get something out of it. The writer director Stewart St. John has something to say, and the movie has a strong political undercurrent especially given today's political unrest. You can clearly see where the film is hampered by budget constraints but there is still something there. Bailey Chase shines as the loyal brother Aiden. He is blindly devoted to his older brother played by Eric Scott Woods who I think is a bit miscast. The story revolves around an underground society that has built an entire underworld system where they live after humans created them and then tried to kill them. There is a political leader of the clones (that is basically what they are, clones) who now wants to kill the remaining humans who live up on Earth's surface, but he has a secret (spoiler) that makes him the way he is. The relationship between the brothers and their mother is what was interesting to me, but if you don't like drama with lots of words then you probably won't like this movie.

Son Of Power Rangers!!
poustinik7 May 2011
What else would you expect from Stewart St. John, whose career was made writing and editing kids' fare like "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers" and "V.R. Troopers??" This film is aimed directly at the newly-adult audience who grew up thinking those shows were cool. If you were one of those, you will think this movie is cool, you will be revelling in the wooden, eyeliner-plastered actors (villains suitable indicated by underlighting), and you will be eagerly awaiting the next installment in The Creations Wars Saga, or The Chronicles Of Hollow Earth, or whatever Mr St. John is calling it this year. If you can't wait for it, I recommend watching "Skyline," which you will also love.

slow, dull, boring
holyspiritdriven25 May 2014
Me & my buddies love obscure, art- house, independent films & so we're always going out on a limb to find something good. I really wish there was some kind of warning like a scarlet letter for movies like this. This movie is painfully slow and so dull I couldn't follow what was happening. The acting is bad, the sets & costumes are low budget. The eyeliner on the bad-guys was so distracting I think I paid more attention to it than the dialogue. It seems they could only film in 5 locations, one of which was someone's apartment. There are no ups & downs in action- if the pacing of the film were on a graph it would flat-line.

We kept hoping things would change but a half hour in we gave it the fast forward treatment.

hits new levels of awfulness; for heaven's sake, don't waste your time
ecanarensis20 November 2015
Wow. The only good thing I can say about this movie is that I didn't pay anything to watch it. Just...wow. one of the great tragedies of all time is that Roger Ebert apparently didn't review it before he died; he could supply redemption to truly loathsome films with his slicing wit.

I wish I could come up with something devastatingly witty to say about this movie, but words nearly fail me. It must've had a strong sponsorship from some kohl manufacturer; the actors & actresses all look as if someone passed out pairs of binoculars with the eyepieces heavily slathered with black paint.

The acting is beyond bad, hitting new depths of atrociousness; wooden & ludicrous. Of course, the script is abominable so it's not as if they had anything to work with. It makes no sense. It cuts randomly from scene to scene, with no rhyme or reason.

This is one of those movies that's so bad that not even the geniuses at MST3K could've made watching it worthwhile, even at their very best.

To paraphrase Monty Python, this is not a movie for watching: this is a movie for laying down & avoiding.

Dark Metropolis

I started watching this movie thinking I had watched part 1 first, but I had not. But guess what? It didn't matter. I was mesmerized. This movie was on POINT! I will recommend it to all my movie lover friends and every one else who needs a good thought provoking, weekend movie. It is SF, but you don't have to be a SF fan to enjoy.

I was a little disturbed about the ending and so I went about checking for part 3 and didn't find anything. Hey you out there, if you know about a part 3 being out, let us know. Stewert St John did a bang-up job. I won't do like some people and give away the story but kind of like the Bible, brotherly love is tested. Now you got to see which way it goes. Because there will be a sequel or 2. I heard. lol
