Refreshing and Pretty
i_odin14 May 2022
Modern Love: Mumbai is a retelling of the NYT's original Modern Love which is based on modern love stories based in New York. This is in fact more than just a retelling. It is an Indianised (and also Mumbaiya) version which not only delve deeper into the romance aspects but also the human and family emotions which Indian stories are known for.

The stories range from subtle new age romance in 'I Love Thane' to the gullible extravaganza of 'Raat Rani'. On one hand we have these taboo breaking yet already heavily experimented love stories in 'Baai' and 'My Beautiful Wrinkles' while on the other hand we have totally refreshing and unique storytelling like 'Mumbai Dragon'.

This series not only celebrates the new age romance but also portrays the repurcussions that love can have when that love is set in a cosmopolitan setup like Mumbai.

My absolute favourites are 'I Love Thane' for its simplistic approach to love, it is a signature Dhruv Sehgal romance, and Vishal Bharadwaj's 'Mumbai Dragon' for telling such a different story from the rest.

Modern love:mumbai-season 1
puranjanbasak17 May 2022
Modern love:mumbai is a comedy romance show consisting of 6 different stories. Here are the positives and negatives.

Raatrani: it is directed by shonali bose. Fatima sana sheikh has given an outstanding performance. She got a sweet and naive kashmiri character and did full justice to it. Her accent was well worked upon and she didn't miss a beat in the runtime. The metaphor of crossing a bridge and moving on is so beautifully and artistically done. And if you are stressing upon the title watch it and you will get to know.

Baai:it is directed by hansal mehta. Who wouldn't want to see the jodi of pratik and hansal together again?(laughs) they have done it again together. Pratik gandhi has touched upon the nuances of a gay character beautifully. Does not come as stereotypical or cliche but just genuine. Ranveer brar too as his partner is so so good. The dialogues are so well written. The one shot sequence of the 1992 bombay riot was excellently done.

Mumbai dragon:this is directed by vishal bhardwaj. Yeo yann yann is so brilliant man. Such a pure character and she has played it beautifully. Meiyang chang and wamiqa gabbi do their roles as given. The humour was on point in this episode. Also it has given such a poke on the racism that is present towards the mongolian face-cut people. This is a brilliant story with an ever so brilliant ending. Just keep your brain working towards vishal sir's craft.

My beautiful wrinkles:it is directed by alankrita shrivastava. Such a mature take on the sexual desires of two individuals from two different age groups. Brilliantly acted by sarika as well. Danesh razvi also did his best portraying a nervous yet bold character. There are some problems in the screenplay though, it stretches a bit.

I love thane:-this is directed by dhruv sehgal. Masaba gupta is growing and growing as an actor. Such an understated performance. Ritwick bhowmick is just brilliant all along. He can be a star in the upcoming years. But the story here looks a bit superficial i would say.

Cutting chai:this is directed by nupur asthana. Arshad warsi and chitrangada singh do a fine job here no doubt but the story lacks the punch. There is a brilliant conglomeration too between all the leads from all the stories but still is not enough. This needed some more good writing tbh.

This is altogether a wonderful show. I rate it 8 out of 10.

Just Perfect

The stories are so real that you feel connected to each character at some level. A soothing and engrossing series. Modern Love is actually a group of stories of us and the people around us. People who love to live in denial of modern concepts of live might find it absurd. However, everyone should watch it to get a perspective on the modern society.

What an ensemble of talented actors and directors! Heartily created stories...beautifully rendered. Many moments from the series touch a nerve...many scenes take us back to the fond memories lived in the lanes of Mumbai. Do watch once.

Sweet, breezy and beautiful.
jetkot7 June 2022
Episode 1 : Raat Rani, Fatima Sana Shaikh nails it, we can feel her freedom and happiness Episode 2 : Baai - Such a beautiful chemistry between Tanuja and Pratik Gandhi. Ranjveer Brar is brilliant too. The lovemaking scenes were a bit awkward.

Episode 3 : Mumbai Dragon . The best Episode according to me. So different and unique in its storytelling with such brilliant performances by Nasseruddin Shah, Meiyang Chang, Wamiqa Gabbi and Yann Yann Yeo. Vishal Bharadwaj directs beautifully and Anurag Kashyap cameo is the icing on the cake Episode 4 : Sarika and her exuberance of youth She looks effortlessly beautiful at this age and such a bold subject has been handled so gracefully by Alankrita Shrivastava.

Episode 5: Masaba Gupta is so natural in front of the camera and the story is so breezy and sweet.

Episode 6 : Arshad Warsi exudes such charm and he is so natural in this role. The chemistry he shares with Chitaraganda Singh is awesome. It's a relatable and practical story of a couple that carries on irrespective of their differences.

Such a beautiful show and I'm surprised no one is talking about it.

Made with passion but more love was required.
dheevardp16 May 2022
All stores in this series start with good subject but slowly looses the plot. Except for the peppy and hilarious Mumbai Dragon & a bold but realistic My Beautiful Wrinkles, there's nothing much going on in the rest of the stories.

Vishal Bhardwaj does an awesome job with the age old subject the relationship between a mother her son and the son's partner.

Alankrita Shrivastava also beautifully handles the topic of love and romance and the expectations around it especially when there is a big age gap between the participating couple.

All actors have tried to give their best but its the writing and the overall treatment that a let down.

I would say its an honest attempt to show something fresh but still lacks the emotional punch.

'Mumbai Dragon' takes the cake in this mixed bag of short films.
Perspicuity11 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Modern Love Mumbai is a mixed bag, with 'Mumbai Dragon' and 'Cutting Chai' being the most impressive of the lot. A common theme in these episodes, apart from the emphasis on food, is that the stories are either centered on women or have a strong female character, which I feel is a welcome change.

1. RAAT RANI

Raat Rani takes us through the emotional journey of Lalzari as she goes through the various stages of grief. At first she tries to overlook the problems in her marriage, but when the fragility gets exposed and she gets the shock of her life, it shatters her world. In the next stage, she desperately tries to piece together her broken marriage, but all her efforts go in vain and we see her world go dark. Finally we see her accepting her fate and resolving to move on, which ultimately leads her on the path of liberation. It is perhaps the story of so many women, who are forced into a space of uncertainty when their husbands decide to kick them out of their lives. Fatima does a beautiful job of portraying the various stages of grief that she has to go through. Stories like these, once again highlight the importance of educating your daughter, as that would empower her to live a life on her own terms, a life that is not dependent on anyone but herself. The usage of metaphors to illustrate the changes taking place in Lalzari's life was impressive. 'Raat Rani' doesn't really entertain you, nor would you feel tempted to watch it again, but as a social commentary it works quite well.

2. BAAI

'Baai' starts with the visuals of the 1992 riots that took place in Mumbai, the hatred filled atmosphere that scarred the lives of so many people. Talking about homosexuality is a difficult thing, so the director tries to convince the viewers by using the example of riots. Opposing love is also a form of hatred, so if you are not allowing two individuals in love to get together, then you have allowed hatred to find a place in your heart. The director has used some of the most beautiful songs to soften the hearts of the viewers and make them more accepting of the romance. Pratik Gandhi very convincingly portrays Manzu, a conflicted man who doesn't really know how to open his heart. Manzu's upbringing stops him from following his heart and he's left trapped in a battle with himself. Ranveer Brar is not really acting in the film, he is just being himself as Rajveer, a fearless man who has openly accepted his sexual orientation. The movie has a strong supporting cast, but the standout performer is Tanuja as Baai. Every time Tanuja looks at her co-actor, you know she is not only looking at them but also reading their mind. Not everything needs to be said, when you have a thespian like Tanuja, who is absolutely brilliant not only when she speaks but also when she lets her eyes do the talking. Once again, this movie is socially relevant but viewers looking for entertainment would end up with disappointment.

3. MUMBAI DRAGON

Mumbai Dragon is easily the best episode of the series. This movie checks pretty much all the boxes that will compel a viewer to watch a film. It's well acted, there is a lot of humour, the screenplay is engaging, the music is good and it has a social message as well. In one of the scenes, Sui, who is the mother of Ming, asks him as to how will he survive with a girl who doesn't even eat garlic, a valid question considering it's relevance in Indian food, but the director is trying to say something about real life through that scene. How can people who belong to two different cultures get together? Both of them have had a different kind of upbringing, how can they ever come on the same page? The answer is also given through food, the most important ingredient in food is love and not really garlic. Two completely different individuals can come together and live happily in each other's company, if they really want to. It doesn't matter how you are different from each other, all that matters is what connects the two of you. As long as that connection is strong, nothing can pull you apart.

The star of this show is without a doubt the Malaysian actress Yeo Yann Yann, who has surprisingly managed to look old and grumpy in this film, because in real life she looks very young and attractive. Yeo plays Sui, who gets animated and over dramatic when things start to go out of hand. She represents every mother, who loves her child dearly but doesn't shy away from expressing her anger when they cross a line. Her scenes with Ming, played by Meiyang Chang, are absolutely hilarious. The interactions between Sui and Ming just don't feel acted out at all, everything feels spontaneous and authentic. Yeo is a fantastic talent, and I am really glad Vishal decided to cast her in this film.

It was a pleasant surprise to see Meiyang Chang in this film, after such a long time. He is a very capable actor, with a beautiful voice, and has given a grounded performance in the film. Megha has been confidently portrayed by the gorgeous Wamiqa Gabbi, an actress who has dropped out of nowhere and now I wonder as to why it took her so long? Wamiqa is an impeccable talent, and I am really happy to see her get more roles after her stunning act in 'Grahan'.

The movie beautifully uses food as a metaphor to explain the issues that have cropped up in Sui's life and it's only through food we get to know that a resolution has been found. That was a very charming and unique way of telling the story, and as a viewer you don't expect anything less from a director of Vishal's caliber. This movie is thoroughly entertaining, the performances are impressive, has an important social message and of course the quintessential Vishal Bhardwaj song, that you end up humming after watching the film.

4. MY BEAUTIFUL WRINKLES

This is the weakest and the most boring short film of this series. The message that the movie was trying to convey was good, your age and fear of society should never restrict you from having desires, you are the master of your life and nothing should stop you from doing what makes you happy. We have just assumed that old people don't seek companionship, they don't have any kind of sexual desires. This is the story of Dilbar, an old widow living a quiet life until one day a young man triggers her imagination by expressing his love for her. As a concept, it's great, but the screenplay and performances are a major letdown here. This movie does not engage you at all, you just keep waiting for something interesting to come up, but it never happens as the screenplay remains bland throughout.

5. I LOVE THANE

'I Love Thane' starts off shakily, with Saiba, played by Masaba Gupta, searching through dating apps for a soulmate, who is modern enough to accept her with all her shortcomings, but it gets better once she comes across Parth played by Ritwik Bhowmik. Ritwik is a wonderful talent, and yet again he has nailed the calm and composed character of Parth, an introvert, who might be considered old fashioned by many, but in reality is much more open minded than most men who pretend to be modern. Masaba is quite charming as Saiba; of course she's not as good as her mother, but she did quite well here. The majority of the film consists of conversations between Parth and Saiba, but it is very engaging, so much so that by the time the film ended, I wanted to spend some more time with the two of them and explore their universe. Sometimes the best conversations are about nothing and yet you enjoy them the most because they allow you the freedom to be yourself. The relationship that develops between Saiba and Parth has a certain warmth to it, which is not often seen in movies these days. I didn't quite like the beginning of this film, but by the time it came to a conclusion, it managed to put a smile on my face.

6. CUTTING CHAI

'Cutting Chai' is the story of one day in the life of Latika and Daniel, but it has been told very creatively. Chitrangda Singh and Arshad Warsi are two of the most exceptionally talented actors of our film industry, who never got the respect that they deserved from the audience as well as the filmmakers. Chitrangda looks absolutely gorgeous in every single frame of the film, it's impossible to look at anything else when she comes on screen, which makes it even more difficult to believe that this stunning beauty has been struggling to get work in the film industry! 'Cutting Chai' is told to us through Latika's perspective, in which she questions the key decisions of her life, and whether life would be any different if she had taken a different path? We are shown a visual representation of the conflicts rattling her mind, which I felt was a very innovative concept. Latika is angry and full of regrets, but the journey that she takes on that day allows her to contemplate and realize that her world may have been a chaotic mess, but she still managed to sail through because she always had love. The movie tries to emphasize that every time you end up at a dead end in your marriage, just take a moment to introspect and think about why you got together in the first place; it will help you realize that life is not as hopeless as you think it has become.

It's a mystery why an actor like Arshad Warsi is not as popular as his contemporaries. Arshad is not only a good actor but also has a great sense of comic timing, a quality very rarely seen in actors these days. In 'Cutting Chai', Arshad not only wins the heart of Latika but also of the viewers, because he really knows how to put a smile on your face. The conversations between Latika and Daniel have been done really well, I just wish there was more of it. The final interaction between Latika and Daniel is absolutely hilarious, and for that the writer as well as Arshad deserve to be praised. This is what sets apart Arshad from others, his comic timing is phenomenal. Cutting Chai is an extremely enjoyable episode that will fill your heart with warmth.

An engrossing take on modern-day love stories of multiple proportions.
SAMTHEBESTEST13 May 2022
Modern Love Mumbai (2022) Review :

Amazon Prime's latest anthology series, Modern Love Mumbai, has multiple love stories combined together. It's a nuanced take on modern issues like homosexuality and acceptance, a modern-day millennial love, a mother-son Asian duo, lost-love and grief, finding independence and breaking free; all set against the backdrop of love.

1) My Beautiful Wrinkles - A poetic tale that teaches young ones to believe in themselves, and seniors to be proud of their wrinkles.

My Beautiful Wrinkles is about a widow, Dilbar (Sarika), who has lost her lover in a car accident. She has closed all the two uses of love in her life. She even tells her old-age girlfriends this. In one of the dialogues, she says, "Somebody should tell her that she is 63." Her friend (Navneet Nishan) replies, "There's no age for love." Dilbar regularly meets a young boy, Kunal (Danesh Razvi), to build his confidence for job interviews. After several meetings, he opens up to her and shares his feelings towards her. What happens next is all revealed in this 37-minute short film. My Beautiful Wrinkles gives a good message to both young and aged people about love and affection. This isn't the first time we've seen it. We saw the same theories in Dil Chahta Hai (2001) and Cheeni Kum (2007), but here the conclusion is different and effective, too. Sarika and Danesh look very natural throughout the narrative. Sarika looks gorgeous and stays relevant even with those pauses and slow motion scenes that haven't got any dialogue. Danesh is damn organic in some scenes, especially the very first scene when he has to sound nervous. Alankrita Srivastava's tale is pure at heart and noble when it comes to urban people who actually go through such crises in their lives. The poetic narration with that constant score playing in the background makes the viewing experience rich. As a whole, My Beautiful Wrinkles is a beautiful tale that deserves to be watched by two different generations together.

RATING - 7/10*

2) Baai : An LGBT romance goofed up with Baai's ultimate tragedy.

Hansal Mehta's Baai is about a young musician and singer, Manzu (Pratik Gandhi), who happens to be gay. He finds a perfect partner in the form of Ranveer (Ranveer Brar), who is a famous chef. Manzu's parents are ashamed of his sexuality and they prevent him from telling this to Baai (Tanuja), the owner of the house. The 42-minute short film is set in the Muslim Ghetto and had the potential to explore religious hatred, but because of its sexually advanced love story, it avoids the socially challenging topic. The climax doesn't really prove anything that can be called fulfilling because the pre-climax portion very much sums up things for the viewers. The narrative is slow and boring on occasion, but the performances of Pratik Gandhi, Tanuja and Ranveer Brar keep it steady. Mehta's direction is fairly decent, but doesn't offer anything up to the level. Overall, Baai is a decent watch for adults, but nothing too great.

RATING - 5/10*

3) I Love Thane : Just another age-gap love story with a beautiful reference to nature.

Set in the gorgeous locations of Thane, Dhruv Sehgal's I Love Thane is about Saiba (Masaba Gupta), who is 30+ and single. She is fed up with being alone and starts dating boys of different age groups but finds no one perfect. Then, she meets Parth (Ritvik Bhowmik), an audit officer at BMC who was once her junior, and love blossoms between the two. I Love Thane is a very simple tale and a bit trite in its content. Love with a small age-gap is too mainstream, and maybe that's why it hasn't got anything else to show. The English dialogues capture the urban culture very well, and Masaba Gupta looks like a proper city girl. She does look dull in a couple of scenes, but the rest of the time she is fine. Ritvik Bhowmik hasn't got a challenging role to play here, but he is quite simple in that simple role. Sehgal's vision to make a regular story set in urban characters is more about its beautiful scenery than its script, so as a whole it makes nothing but a one-time watch experience.

RATING - 5/10*

4) Mumbai Dragon : A traditional tale of a mother's unconditional love set against a modern community battle in Mumbai.

Vishal Bhardwaj's Mumbai Dragon is set in dark Mumbai - at least that's how it looks on screen because most of the scenes take place in Night. Sui (Yeo Yann Yann) loves her son Ming (Meiyang Chang) too much and is very possessive about him while being one of the rare left Indo-china species who is trying to keep the community alive. Despite her extra care, Ming falls in love with a Gujju girl, Megha (Wamiqa Gabbi), and they continue a live-in relationship. Mumbai Dragon is all about a mother's unconditional love for her kid, while the rest of the narrative tries to push in an outdated zone of 70s tragic family dramas. However, Vishal Bhardwaj makes sure that he ends it on a positive note and does not forget to pull off the best from the actors. Yeo Yann Yann is hilarious as a protective mother, whereas Meiyang passes with decent grades. Wamiqa Gabbi's glamorous avatar and accent will make you fall in love with her. In the meantime, you have Naseeruddin Shah appearing in a sweet cameo. In a nutshell, Mumbai Dragon is a nice, modern attempt at the old theories of mother-son relationship issues.

RATING - 6/10*

5) Raat Rani : Fatima Sana Shaikh rises twice like the Sun and the Moon in a single narrative that has a great inspiring message of woman empowerment.

Lalzari, played by Fatima Sana Shaikh, is a loyal wife to Lutfi (Bhupendra Jadawat), but she is a little weird and wild. She has a fire inside her but never realises it, until one day when Lutfu abandons her. She, then, discovers a new life of her own and makes a free, self-reliant woman out of herself. Fatima Sana Shaikh has a blast playing Lalizar. Just like Jasmine, she spreads her aroma through the Raat Raani and gives one of the best performances of her career to date. There's a quote, something like, "Rise twice in a day like the sun and the moon," that unknowingly describes her character and her performance as well. Bhupendra, as her husband, looks natural, and Dilip Prabhavalkar is pleasant. Shonali Bose delivers an inspiring tale of female empowerment, but more than others, it's about realising it by yourself. That makes it special. A few flaws in the middle put it down for a while, but then Raat Raani rises again at the end. In short, an encouraging tale of finding independence and breaking free.

RATING - 6/10*

6) Cutting Chai : The most relevant, compatible, and happening love story in the entire series.

Written and adapted by Devika Bhagat, and by Nupur Asthana, Cutting Chai is about Daniel (Arshad Warsi) and his wife, Latika (Chitrangda Singh), who have been married for 17 years. Latika is an aspiring writer and wants to finish her novel, but she hasn't got time to do so in 17 years of marriage as she was too busy with housewife things. Daniel loves Latika, but he's too busy to give her quality time and is always late for everything. This is quite a happening story for every married couple nowadays. That's why it makes a quick connect. I was literally out of the race during the middle of the narrative as the psychological stuff and backdrop were looking too unconvincing, but then came a terrific conclusion that made me fall in love with Cutting Chai. Chitrangada Singh and Arshad Warsi share great chemistry in this short film, and that's one of the best reasons to recommend Cutting Chai to you. Asthana's direction is a little messed up in the middle, but overall gives justice to Devika's writing - especially the climax. As a whole, Cutting Chai is arguably the best short in the entire series and unarguably the most relevant and happening tale.

RATING - 7/10*

Sweet anthologies
sameerlodaya17 May 2022
Sameer lodaya

The makers have made here 6 anthologies in a very sweet manner

The anthologies have galaxy of stars where star has performed reasonable with their characters..the sweetness and innocence is well presented in every anthologies..these anthologies gives you good messages and deep understanding of one's feelings..the climax was well made by gathering all the characters thus giving a smile full ending

The negative part is anthologies doesn't entertain everyone and in this the makers have made on a very polished way where people may get bored..each anthology goes on a very slow pace with no new stories or content

Don't expect too much.

Loved it
bilburry17 May 2022
Started watching it with zero expectations as I thought the series would be very pretentious and would try to copy the original Modern Love, in turn becoming very 'non-Indian'. But boy did the series exceed my expectations and not just exceeded, but exceeded by a lot. The topics around which each episode revolved were handled with such charm that it didn't feel boring even for a single moment Having never lived in Mumbai myself, I could still feel the Mumbainess in each episode. My favorites were Raat Rani, Mumbai Dragon, I Love Thane, and Cutting Chai.

Everyone acted amazingly well given that such seasoned actors were a part of this project. Special mention to Ranveer Brar who acted beautifully and might I say outshined Pratik Gandhi. Pratik no doubt is a phenomenal actor but I think his acting in the series felt a bit restrained. I could see through the screen that he was uncomfortable doing some scenes.

Watch the series to see something refreshing.

Most of the movies were absolutely lovely except for Mumbai Dragon. Mumbai Dragon and the character of Megha was absolutely unbearable. Blot on an excellent anthology. Try not to watch this one!

Taking off 3 stars out of sheer disappointment.

The Mumbai Edition of Modern Love is mostly remarkable!
tkmce200818 May 2022
The first Indian spin-off of the popular anthology series, Modern Love is set in the city of Mumbai (with two more cities to follow). I feel this is an apt way of capturing love stories in India. Each city has a different feel, history attached to it. You may not relate to the story as such but the sights and sounds of the city will definitely take you down memory lane (wish they do one for Kerala & Delhi).

Directed by 6 renowned directors, my favourites were Baai, Raat Rani & Cutting Chai (in no particular order). Baai has Pratik Gandhi and Chef Ranveer Brar (debut) as a gay couple. Directed by Hansal Mehta, this short was a mature take on queer relationships in India. Raat Rani was a one woman show; a short about loving yourself. Fatima Sana Shaikh's performance was remarkable (directed by Shonali Bose). Cutting Chai is the shortest of the six but a sweet story about a struggling writer and her 'what if' scenarios. Chitrangda Singh and Arshad Warsi make for a perfect pair (directed by Nupur Asthana).

The weakest of the six is definitely My Beautiful Wrinkles. It doesn't offer anything new but it has Alankrita Shrivastava's signature style. Vishal Bhardwaj's Mumbai Dragon is unique with respect to its history but falls short. And Dhruv Sehgal's I Love Thane (Masaba Gupta & Ritwik Bhowmik) is subtle and sweet.

The Mumbai stories have a lot in common. Many of them (except one) have a strong connection with food, which makes it all the more appetising. And a lot of them capture the history of the city and some its current state.

Prime Video India continues to churn out meaningful & entertaining shows. Modern Love tugs at your heart and at times, your taste buds.

This is one of the most beautiful short stories ensemble I have seen. Talented actors, awesome music, amazing shot encapsulate each story with a heart of its own. I loved it and the boldness in redefining love as not belonging to one genre but to the world at large.

Non-show off and pure show.

I really liked the all stories.

Only reason why i am giving less rating is because of the casting of the traitor Nasruddin Shah in story no. 3

If you pick anti India people, your projects will loose the credibility. All traitors are being flop in movies these days. Don't cast them in OTT platforms.

Propaganda Series
amitkureel15 May 2022
Within first 10 seconds, I knew that its was a propaganda series with some visuals interspersed to make it look genuine!

The stories are mostly fake or forced.

Overall, a poor dramatization and poor direction.

The movies.

Nice stories.

Realistic and very relatable.

All stories are unique, some a little offbeat but worth watching Individual stories, woven together at the end.

Would love to watch more of these.

Beautifully crafted stories

Loved all the sotries... specially "I ❤ Thane".

Modern love and Modern love: Mumbai both are awesome.

Ranveer's work also very good. Enjoyed his acting... awaiting to see more of his acting skills.
