An enjoyable and believable series

Warning: Spoilers
It is hard to put this series into any one category; I've seen it described as a comedy drama but don't expect a constant stream of laughs or dramatic moments; 'Hanasaku Iroha' is far more subtle than that. This is the story of Ohana; a sixteen year old Tokyo schoolgirl whose mother sends her to live with her grandmother at a traditional Japanese inn in the country. Once there Ohana learns that she is expected to work in the inn and must refer to her grandmother as Madam Manager! Initially she doesn't fit in too well but over time she becomes friends with the other people working there and grows to love the place.

If you want guffaws and nonstop action this is not the series for you; but if you want something different with a gentle story and believable characters one can care about this is well worth watching. There is nothing here to offend despite the series having a few nude scenes; these are all tastefully done and seem justified by the situation rather than being gratuitous and the camera doesn't linger in the way it would in many other series.

The series can currently be watched legally on Crunchyroll where it is shown in the original Japanese with English subtitles.
