HBO's critically acclaimed fantasy series Game of Thrones achieved record viewership for the network and has garnered a vast fanbase worldwide. The series aired from 2011 to 2019 across eight seasons, and during that time, the series and ensemble cast were nominated for numerous awards. Most impressively, the series was nominated for 164 Primetime Emmys, winning 59. This series has propelled many of its cast members into the limelight, but who is the most successful?

Looking at award nominations and wins, Peter Dinklage, who portrayed Tyrion Lannister, led the pack with 40 nominations, of which he won seven. China’s cinema box office trod water in the weekend ahead of the Chinese New Year holidays and an imminent surge of new release titles. These mean that the next few days could add up to the biggest week in Chinese movie history.

Over the latest weekend, though, the nationwide aggregate was a paltry $21.4 million, the lowest weekend this year, according to data from consultancy Artisan Gateway.

“Fireflies in the Sun,” a Wanda Pictures-backed thriller, said to be a remake of “John Q,” climbed back to first place with a $4.1 million take. It was first released in mid-December and has now built a cumulative of $174 million.

“The Matrix: Resurrections” fell out of the top five chart positions at the mainland Chinese box office over the latest weekend. The top spots were reclaimed by local, holdover titles.

China Film Co.’s patriotic pandemic drama “Embrace Again” was the top film over the latest Friday to Sunday weekend, with a weekend score of $5.3 million, according to data from consultancy firm Artisan Gateway. Since Dec. 31, 2021, the film has accumulated $139 million. The previous weekend, it had taken $6.8 million in second place.

In second place over the latest session was “Fireflies in the Sun,” a Wanda Pictures-backed thriller, said to be a remake of “John Q.” It was first released in mid-December but bubbled back with a $4.4 million weekend, lifting its cumulative to $169 million.

Chinese crime thriller “G Storm” earned $3.4 million over the weekend in third place for a cumulative of $93.2 million since releasing on Dec. 31.

Warner Bros.’ “The Matrix Resurrections” opened number one this weekend at the China box office thanks to $7.5 million in sales, according to data from the Artisan Gateway consultancy.

China’s national box office for 2022 is already off to a slow start, and currently sits at 15% below the same period last year. The country is currently struggling to contain the new threat of the omicron Covid-19 variant ahead of the upcoming Beijing Olympic games. As of Sunday, some 14 provinces had reported local omicron cases, including the cities of Beijing and Shanghai. After a rocky 2021 in China, Hollywood kicked off 2022 with its first revenue-share studio release of the year in Disney’s lush animated movie “Encanto.” The musical family film conjured up $3.22 million in the Middle Kingdom, according to data from the Maoyan platform.

The Colombia-set musical about the boisterous Madrigal family and their magical gifts placed sixth at the box office, behind a slew of holdover local titles.

“Encanto” grossed $43.3 million in theaters over its five-day Thanksgiving weekend stateside back in November before releasing on Disney Plus near the Christmas holiday. Exclusive: Me And Orson Welles star to co-direct with Ben Hecking.

British actor Christian McKay, perhaps best known for his eponymous role in Me And Orson Welles, is to co-direct intense relationship drama Provenance with cinematographer Ben Hecking.

The independent British feature, which is in pre-production, marks the directorial debut for both McKay and Hecking and is based on an original story developed by the duo.

McKay, also known for roles in Rush, The Theory Of Everything and the upcoming Florence Foster Jenkins, will also star alongside Spanish actress Charlotte Vega (Another Me, The Refugees, El club de los incomprendidos) in her first leading English-language role and Harry Macqueen.

Macqueen is the writer, director and star of British drama Hinterland, on which Hecking served as cinematographer. He also had a small role in Me And Orson Welles.

Provenance is produced by White Horse Films and is fully funded. Shooting will begin in the south of France in April...

I recently sat down with director Isabel Coixet, and actors Patricia Clarkson and Sarita Choudhury at the Crosby Hotel in New York City, to discuss their new film "Learning to Drive." The film, written by Sarah Kernochan, is based on the autobiographical New Yorker short story by Katha Pollit, a long-time political columnist for the Nation.

Wendy is a fiery Manhattan author whose husband has just left her for a younger woman; Darwan is a soft-spoken taxi driver from India on the verge of an arranged marriage. As Wendy sets out to reclaim her independence, she runs into a barrier common to many lifelong New Yorkers: she’s never learned to drive. When Wendy hires Darwan to teach her, her unraveling life and his calm restraint seem like an awkward fit. But as he shows her how to take control of the wheel, and she coaches him on how to impress a woman, their unlikely friendship awakens them to the joy, humor, and love in starting life anew.

My conversation began with Isabel Coixet and Sarita Choudhury

Susan Kouguell: Tell me about the process of how "Learning to Drive" came about.

Isabel Coixet: We started talking about making this film with Patricia and Ben Kingsley when we were making "Elegy" (directed by Coixet, starring Clarkson and Kingsley) and we got along very well and we wanted to make another film together. Patricia discovered the short story by Katha Pollit, and she gave it to me and I thought it was wonderful. And then we got the screenwriter Sarah Kernocha involved. The film is a comedy but not a classical comedy. It was a very difficult film to pitch because you know financiers and producers want something they can put in one box and you can’t with this film. It was a long process. It took nine years.

Some Words Unspoken and the Intimacy of the Camera

Isabel Coixet: There is always this romantic feeling underneath [subtext], I think there is that possibility. You have to be true to your words. If they are true, you will have to stick to your words.

Sarita Choudhury: That’s what happens with people you meet. No you were my inspiration don’t make me your inspiration.

Isabel Coixet: I love Henry James. There is a possibility of romance in the air. My romantic side is always excited when I see something like this.

Sarita Choudhury: I had so few words in the film. In a way, I kept the words because I had to know not to say them. For us the script -- the situational was also in the script; the languidness. It was because Isabel holds the camera. There was a pace created to it. When you’re acting you can feel where the camera is, but when the camera is at the end of Isabel’s hand and she’s moving it, it almost creates an intimacy between you and the camera, and you and the actor. There’s a pace you normally don’t get in film. You didn’t know when she was on your face; you had to keep acting like acting in the theatre.

On The Lack of Women Directors

Isabel Coixet: There are so many articles about it. I’m always afraid to play the victim, to complain too much. I know there is an inequity with men and women directors. This is an issue in the world. I always say, (Coixet smiles) we have to ask for more salary to make up for all these years and maybe if we ask for more they’ll give us the same as a man.

I want to put my words where my mouth is by producing female directors; they are amazing talented people. I’m producing three short films and a feature documentary. That’s what I do.

Sarita Choudhury: I just did a young woman’s short film; there is something about her that’s brilliant. I’ve done two short films. I can’t change the caste system and I can’t do the voluntary work I need to be doing. Film is no different from the world, like Isabel said. That’s our work, to get every woman involved. And if a man is brilliant, let him in too.

I then asked Patricia Clarkson about her involvement with "Learning to Drive."

Academy Award® nominee and Emmy Award-winning actress, Patricia Clarkson, has worked extensively in independent films. The National Board of Review and the National Society of Film Critics named her Best Supporting Actress of the Year for "Pieces of April" and "The Station Agent." Her many film credits include "The Maze Runner," "Last Weekend," "Friends With Benefits," "One Day," "Easy A," "Shutter Island," "Vicky Christina Barcelona," "Elegy," "No Reservations," "All the Kings’ Men," "Lars and the Real Girl, and "Good Night, and Good Luck."

Susan Kouguell: What attracted you to the project?

Patricia Clarkson: I loved the Katha Pollit story in The New Yorker; it serendipitously came to me. I love Wendy, I love this character. I was nine years younger at the time, but I still felt I knew her. I was relentless trying to get this film made with producer Dana Friedman. I found it an equal dose of funny and tragic. I liked the almost commedia dell'arte aspect; this absurd situation and finding the tragic comedy. A woman who is brilliant who lives a great life -- she has everything, but “forgets to look up,” and then meets a man who has experienced tragic loss. They have disparate worlds. I found it a quintessential New York story, but it’s also universal. It’s an independent film, but it’s not independently-minded.

Some Final Words

The disparate worlds about which Clarkson refers to in regard to her character, Wendy’s relationship with Darwan [Ben Kingsley] -- the life of a financially successful New Yorker compared to the immigrant’s struggle, was a thematic element that I further discussed with Coixet and Choudhury. As Choudhury said to me, Coixet’s visual choices of her character, such as the moment when she watches feet walk by her basement apartment window, feeling trapped, underscore the poignancy of this fish-out-of-water situation. Coixet captures these elements with a delicate balance of both drama and comedy.

It was an inspiring morning to speak with these three powerful and talented women, who are committed to sharing their knowledge with the next generation of female filmmakers.

The 16th edition of genre film festival unveils full line-up.

Film4 FrightFest will mark its 16th edition with its largest line-up ever, showcasing 76 films across five screens at the Vue West End in Leicester Square from Aug 27-31.

This year’s line-up features 20 world premieres, a record-breaking 16 European premieres and 26 UK premieres, with 18 countries represented. In addition, there will be a further ‘Discovery’ strand at The Prince Charles Cinema, marking a return to the festival’s original home.

As previously announced, the European premieres of Cherry Tree and Tales of Halloween will bookend this year’s edition.

The casting search for younger mutants in X-Men: Apocalypse is over, with director Bryan Singer announcing on his Twitter page that Sophie Turner will play Jean Grey, Tye Sheridan is starring as Cyclops and Alexandra Shipp will take on Storm. All three actors were mentioned as contenders for their respective roles in a report earlier this month. Saoirse Ronan was also up for Jean Grey, with Zendaya Coleman up for Storm and Taron Egerton and Jamie Blackley in contention for Cyclops. Oddly enough, Taron Egerton definitively stated yesterday that he was not playing Cyclops, and now we know why.

Producer Simon Kinberg confirmed in Septemeber that X-Men: Apocalypse will feature younger versions of Jean Grey, Cyclops and Storm, since the story is set in the 1980s. Very little is known about the story, except that it ends the trilogy that started with X-Men: First Class and continued with last year's X-Men: Days of Future Past.

The Berlin International Film Festival announced early Friday morning that "Nobody Wants the Night," the most recent work by Spanish director Isabel Coixet, will open the festival as well as play in the international competition. Previous fest kick-offs included "The Grand Budapest Hotel" and "The Grandmaster." We’re sure "Nobody Wants the Night" is quite grand in its own right, even if it doesn’t flaunt it in the title. Universal Pictures on board film adaptation of classic British series; cast to include Billy Nighy, Catherine Zeta Jones and Toby Jones

The cast of a long-rumoured film based on classic British comedy series Dad’s Army has been revealed.

Toby Jones, best known for roles in The Hunger Games and Harry Potter franchises, will take the leading role of Captain Mainwaring, a stiff-upper-lipped veteran who oversees the Home Guard in a small village toward the end of the Second World War.

His right-hand man, Wilson, will be played by Bill Nighy, known to international audiences for his roles in The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and Love Actually.

Both were previously rumoured to be attached to the project, an adaptation of a BBC comedy series than ran from 1968-77, but Catherine Zeta Jones is newly attached to the film as journalist Rose Winters.

There’s very little mystery in Isabel Coixet’s adaptation of Cathy MacPhail’s young-adult novel Another Me, a ghost story often praised for its ambiguity. Fay Delussy (Sophie Turner) is haunted by dreams of a fetch, a spooky double whose appearance portends death. This spectral figure could be an expression of Fay’s adolescent fears and anxieties, but writer-director Coixet manifests her with Turner’s menacing second-person narration (“You’ve always had bad dreams”). For a few brief, intriguing moments it seems as if Another Me will unfold from the perspective of this otherworldly stalker. Unfortunately, what follows is both muddled and conventional. If you can’t wait until the next season of Game of Thrones for your Sansa fix, Sophie Turner has a solution for you. (Or perhaps two). Her first film, Another Me, based on the book by Catherine MacPhail, features the actress in multiple roles, as a teenage girl named Fay who feels like she’s being stalked by someone who looks just like her, and who is slowly taking over her life. Neighbors spot this other girl in the stairwell — even though Fay only takes the elevator. Teachers and fellow students say they interacted with her on the day Fay stays home sick. Could the look-alike be Fay’s mean-girl rival who is her understudy in the school play? Or someone more sinister? It’s enough to make someone go a little crazy — prompting a moment where Fay chops off her long locks just so people can tell the two of them apart.

One of the benefits of being discovered on a hit TV show is that a chance at a significant movie career is usually in the cards. Actually, it usually only occurs with talent on show that hits the pop culture lexicon.  In this case, "Game of Thrones." Sophie Turner has spent the last four years on "GoT" playing Sansa Stark and as any loyal viewer can tell you, she's been put through the ringer.  She's seen her father beheaded (poor Ned), been engaged to a mad king against her will, was almost raped and then forced to marry the show's most popular character, Lord Tyrion (Peter Dinklage), who doesn't happen to be that popular in King's Landing. Those key dramatic moments, among others, is just one reason Turner has come to the attention of casting directors, producers, international financiers and movie directors. She's got talent that's ready to be explored in other projects.

There's already been two thrillers focusing on the arrival of doppelganger's in the lives of characters in both The Enemy starring Jake Gyllenhaal and The Double starring Jesse Eisenberg. Now one more will enter the mix late this summer, and it gives "Game of Thrones" star Sophie Turner (Sansa Stark) a chance to show her acting chops outside the hit HBO series. With “Breaking Bad” over for almost a year and “Mad Men” winding down, “Game of Thrones” has officially clinched the title of “Everyone’s Favorite Show That No One WIll Stop Talking About,” though it could be said the show took the lead in the wake of the infamous “The Rains of Castamere” episode. The fantasy epic's popularity has afforded some members of the large ensemble opportunities to stretch their legs outside of Westeros. The latest to venture outside that brutal land? It's a rather busy MPAA bulletin today beginning with the already announced R-rated cut of Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues, which will be hitting limited theaters for one week this weekend followed by a March 11 Blu-ray release and then moving to Blood Ties from Guillaume Canet, which was cut down from the version I saw in Cannes last year (which I actually suggested in my review). Continuing with her prolific career Spanish director Isabel Coixet has recently just wrapped up production on her film Learning to Drive starring Ben Kingsley and Patricia Clarkson, all before the release of her psychological thriller Another Me this fall via Fox International and starring Sophie Turner and Jonathan Rhys Meyers. As if that wasn't enough, the director is getting ready to start yet another project titled Nobody Wants the Night, which stars acting giants like Willem Dafoe and Juliette Binoche, and young Rinko Kikuchi.

Coixet is one of a kind, as a woman director she is one of the very few that has also served as camera operator in several of her films, her distinct style and never-ending desire to create new work have earned her a distinct place in international cinema. Her body of work spans to ten films in both the narrative and documentary realms making her one of the most prolific directors workign today. She has premiered her films at the most important film festivals including Cannes’ Official Section, Berlin and Venice, and has worked with many of the most respected actors worldwide

2013 was a very busy year for Coixet, finishing Learning to Drive, which is based on Katha Pollitt’s essay and tells the story of a self-absorbed book critic (played by Clarkson) who, after a recent breakup, signs up for driving lessons as part of an effort to move on with her life. Her instructor is a Sikh man living in Queens (played by Kingsley), and together they will help each other to move forward with their lives. Now awaiting the release of Another Me, based on Cathy MacPhail’s young adult novel of the same name about identity anxiety in a teenage girl, played by Game of Thrones’ star Turner in her film debut, the director is also getting ready to start shooting Nobody Wants the Night early next year in Norway.

Her latest project is the story of two women, from two different worlds, and their struggle to survive in one of the most inhospitable places on Earth. Josephine (to be played by Binoche) is a proud yet naive woman in love with a man who prefers glory and ice to the comforts of an upper-class home. Allaka (to be played by Kikuchi), a young but wise Inuit woman, is in love with the same man with whom she’s expecting a child. Set against the backdrop of a relentless icy landscape, the film chronicles their long, tense wait for the same man they love in such distinct ways.

In 1996 Coixet she made her first English-language film, Things I Never Told You, a moving drama starring Lili Taylor and Andrew McCarthy. International success arrived with the 2003 intimate drama My Life Without Me, based on Nancy Kincaid’s short story, in which Sarah Polley plays Ann, a young mother who decides to hide to her family she has a terminal cancer. This Spanish-Canadian coproduction was a hit at the Berlin Film Festival, from that point on the director's career has grown exponentially and it seems there is no stopping her any time soon.

The Rome Film Festival has revealed its line-up of features, including 12 world premieres among 18 competition titles.

The festival, which runs from Nov 8-17, will include 71 features in the official selection as well 11 medium-length films and 19 shorts.

A total of 1,542 features and 1,078 short films were submitted from 76 countries, according to the festival.

17 year old Sophie Turner, who shot to fame when cast as Sansa Stark in HBO's Game of Thrones, is to star alongside American starlet Hailee Steinfield, in a new indie action-comedy feature Barely Lethal.

The film follows a 16-year-old international assassin (played by Steinfield) yearning for a “normal” adolescence who fakes her own death and enrolls as a senior in a suburban high school. Samuel L. Jackson will play her mentor who trains her in the program.

Sophie (represented by Independent Talent) will play an undercover agent who enrolls in the high school to help capture the teen assassin.

Sophie will next be seen in her feature film debut starring in Isabel Coixet’s supernatural thriller Another Me (previously known as Panda Eyes) alongside fellow Brit Gregg Sulkin, which premieres at the Rome Film Festival.

Directed by Kyle Newman, Barely Lethal is due to start shooting in November.

Directed by Isabel Coixet (My Life Without Me, The Secret Life Of Words), the film stars Game Of Thrones‘ Sophie Turner, who is making her feature film debut. She’s surrounded by Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Rhys Ifans, Claire Forlani, Gregg Sulkin, Leonor Watling, Ivana Baquero, and Geraldine Chaplin. The film is a psychological thriller with Turner playing a woman haunted by a secret past. It is based on the Cathy MacPhail novel Another Me, and Coixet wrote the script. 20th Century Fox will distribute the Fox International film, a UK/Spain co-production that has Rebekah Gilbertson and Nicole Carmen-Davis producing for UK-based Rainy Day Films and Mariela Besuievsky producing for Spain-based Tornasol Films. James Marsden has signed on to star opposite Elizabeth Banks in the comedy Walk of Shame.  The story follows "a high-strung news anchor (Banks) who, after a wild night out, finds herself locked out on the street with no phone, money, ID or car, and embarks on a series of misadventures as she finds her way to the most important job interview of her life."  Steven Brill (Mr. Deeds) wrote and will direct.  Tom Rosenberg, Gary Lucchesi, and Sidney Kimmel are producing.  Banks and Marsden ought to be a nice comedic pairing, so while the logline doesn't hook me, the casting does.
