Just one word: Respect.
ctenuicornis14 April 2020
I have enormous respect for this people. They recorded this movie with barely any budget, unstable electricity, only one camera, reusing actors, putting themselves in danger, almost no props or sets and in a poor country, and the best part is they didn't even intended for this film to be worldwide famous, they just distributed it from house to house. Sure, you can pick apart every second of this movie until you die, but that's not the point. They didn't intend this movie to be The Lord of the Rings or Pulp Fiction or The Godfather. They made it purely for fun, for passion, for love. You can even watch the movie for free if you want, it's on their website, you don't even have to pirate it. This is probably the most charming film I've ever seen. Even the background behind all this is inspiring as hell. Just goes on to show that you don't need a million-dollar budget to make a solid, entertaining film.

So Bad it is AWESOME
thefensk15 May 2015
One reviewer laments the fact that it is obvious that these people never went to film school. They didn't, that's the point.

The director, to his credit, has built his film company from the ground up in the slums of Kampala. The film is a product of those slums. It is a film inspired by the best of Hollywood, but it is thoroughly Ugandan. Take the Video Joker ... this is a component of their distribution requirements because of the many languages and dialects they try to sell to. VJ commentary needs to be customized to their different customer's language needs. The English version is just one of the many they have to apply and market.

I encourage viewers to embrace the humor and bask in the raw talent of this incredible filmmaker.

It is wild and crazy and raw and illogical and funny ... so bad it is really good. This guy makes the exact kinds of movies he wants to make and figures out ways to do it within the realities he has to deal with on a daily basis. Kudos to him.

Better than what AAA Hollywood makes Nowadays
josephellis14 December 2018
This film is funny, exciting, enjoyable, and entertaining. The guy who made this film did this with passion and heart, Uganda is in poverty, but one man steps up to establish entertainment for his country, which will spread to other countries. By selling his things to buy a camera and building a computer, he assembled a team and was going to make the most action packed movie. Then came Who Killed Captain Alex. That story is inspiring and the film is as well. People make movies to entertain people, not to sell merchandise and coat it in CGI. If you want to watch this film, it is free on YouTube and uploaded by the studio themselves. Go check it out! You'll enjoy every second.

Astoundingly entertaining, gut-wrenchingly hilarious, well executed!
thomasjvankampen24 February 2017
This movie is immensely charming and has intoxicating energy from beginning to end. It's seriously, not ironically, one of my favorite films now. I have never laughed this hard at a movie this frequently in my whole life.

This movie was made on a microscopic budget in a third world country in which the director got his whole community involved in production. He sold everything he owned to purchase his camera and built his own PC out of old parts for editing. What came together is a film that's completely aware of it's limitations and runs with it the whole way through with spectacular results. The movie is accompanied by a joke narrator of sorts who is basically just riffing the movie, and it makes the entire experience a riot. I can't wait to watch this with my friends and have an absolute ball with them.

In spite of this movies obvious limitations the director is also impressively competent for receiving so little training in the field he has never even stepped into a movie theater. There were shots in this movie that genuinely impressed me with their creativity and composition (if I make a live action film I might rip some of these ideas off). The film has expansive lore with memorable characters, the best being the leader of the Tiger Mafia, Richard, who is a diabolical and conniving leader whom no one in the movie can intimidate. Not only that, but the action choreography is damn impressive. the stuntman in this movie were self taught kung fu and compete in local tournaments, and you can certainly tell. They know how to take falls, they know how to fake being hit, and the character this movie dubs as "the Ugandan Bruce Lee" is demonstrably strong as hell. I'd love to see both this director and these stuntman be given a larger budget, possibly of Hollywood proportion. The way the kung fu scenes are shot are well done too: they show every hit and it's impact in the same shot, really allowing the choreography to shine (compare that to modern Hollywood where it cuts on every hit so it's impossible to tell what's going on).

All in all, this is a film well worth funding, but the director has such a big heart he lets you download and watch it for free on his website. Please check it out and show your friends, it's a gut wrenchingly funny romp that is the perfect kind of ridiculous with glimmers of talent that shine through the limitations of the budget. And ultimately it's so touching to see this passionate village give this movie their all.

Ugandan Bruce Lee, we call him Bruce U.
anastasiasmarandi15 March 2017
I have created an IMDb account just to review this movie. I don't even know where to start explaining the way in which this movie has touched and impressed me.

When watching it, you have to leave all your standards and expectations regarding cinematography behind because only then you can see it for the true masterpiece that it is. The whole context in which it was made adds to the beauty of it. The fighting scenes, especially the ones involving kung fu are, in my opinion, quite good even compared to Hollywood blockbusters. The acting doesn't even matter. The VJ, although I thought it would be rather annoying, turned out to be in fact really funny and exactly what this movie needed.

I applaud the whole cast and crew who produced with professionalism and dedication such a humble, hilarious and *action packed movie* on the lowest budget I have ever heard of.

dancha-837782 February 2018
This is an inspiring film made by Ugandans in the slums. This movie shows that no matter how hard the conditions are, people can make a movie that is funny and fun to watch. Even though the CGI is bad viewers must look past that and look at the true talent behind this film. A must watch movie

Best action packed movie from Uganda
Shapuska29 December 2018
I watched this movie with my friend over discord and I must say, I don't remember laughing so hard during a one hour long movie.

The narrator VJ Emmie made this movie so much better. Him shouting "commandos" "tiger mafia" "supa soldiers" and those random laughs, sound effects made me actually laugh out loud. The plot made sense.. kinda. Great music choices with Abba - Mamma Mia and Seal - Kiss from a rose. Very cool.

Action is coming, I promise you.

Captain Alex
sambass-3170224 February 2017
This movie has so much heart, and it is amazing to see people in such a dangerous, sad country spend time to make this. Sure, it's not a AAA movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio, but it is amazing for what it is. Look at this as a project for someone who has a passion for movies, but has the misfortune to not to make the best. This movie is hilarious, action- packed, and just great. I recommend this movie to anyone who wants a good laugh. This movie is a good inspiration for anyone who just wants to make a movie.

The only film I have ever seen with a video MC keeping the excitement levels up. It was the video equivalent of a classic drum and bass track. The acting was not important. The storyline might have been important, but the MC kept shouting over the top. This may have changed it from a drama filled action flick to a more comedic action movie, but maybe that is the point. It was made on a shoestring budget so the props and special effects are pretty poor, but this adds to the charm of it all. The main conundrum of who actually killed captain Alex is pretty incidental to the chaotic, partially unscripted film

Overall it was unlike anything I'd ever seen before. Which I'm taking as a good thing.

Uganda's first ever action movie is a real blast! Brought to you by director Kizito Africa, writer Nabwana I.G.G. and starring G. Puffs as Puffs.
Boba_Fett113810 March 2011
Warning: Spoilers
In all seriousness, this movie is being one crazy viewing experience. It's unlike anything else, which is however not really a positive thing about this movie to say. You can't even really call and consider this a real movie, since it doesn't have any production values. The movie is shot with some old fashioned VHS camera's it appears and it got made with a zero dollar budget, by a bunch of friends in their spare time. So in essence this is being nothing more than just an amateur movie, only made and released as a serious movie attempt. As a serious movie it is being laughable bad but once you start to watch it as an amateur movie, it's actually quite an accomplishment, that I'm sure all those involved with are also real proud off. And I also view this movie in that context. So it might seem surprising that I'm not entirely bashing this movie or make fun of it but you just have to see every movie in its own context. And as a full length, 100 minutes long, amateur movie, this is simply quite an accomplishment. But with that I'm not saying that the movie is much good though. The story, amongst lots of other things, all prevents it from being so. I literally had no idea what the story was being all about. Appereantly it was about a fight between the mafia and the army commando's because I heard those words being yelled a lot throughout this movie. It would help if there were subtitles available for this movie but I doubt that it would make the story any better, I also really had no idea, until half way through who captain Alex actually was and I still don't know who killed him. I'm also still left a bit puzzled at who were supposed to be the bad and good guys within this movie. And what happened at the ending exactly? Questions, questions, questions. The entire movie is being narrated by a person who says the exact same things as the actors and even mimics some of the sound effects at times and also comments at how action packed it is and that it got made Ramon Film Productions. It literally gave me an headache and whenever the narrator speaks (which is for 90& of the movie) all of the other sounds of the movie are completely switched off. So dialog, sound effects and music all get ruined by its narration. There are a couple of reasons I can think of why they put in the narration for this movie. 1. to help to let the story move along and explain stuff, in an attempt to still make things understandable. 2. The quality of the recorded sound was considered to be too poor for release. 3. It conceals the actor's inexperience and their delivery of the lines. 4. It's an Ugandese thing. 5. They just had no idea what they were doing. Anyway, the movie would had been off so much better without that incredible annoying and loud, exaggerated narration. But that of course is not the only thing that is wrong with this movie. What is laughable is that things seem to happen very randomly. All of the shooting is still acceptable but at times the movie turns into a fight flick, like you're watching an old Asian Kung Fu movie. Granted that these guys do some impressive moves but it's just completely out of place. On top of that all, the weak editing really doesn't help much with its fight sequences. But the movie is still being most notorious for having some of the absolutely worst special effects of all time. I don't know which program they used for it but I wouldn't be surprised if it was Paint. The muzzle flairs and explosions are the absolute worst but it's still all being topped by the helicopter sequences, which I can't even describe. And they easily could had left this out as well. There was no real point for having an helicopter fly around and blowing up stuff and it would had made the movie as well a whole lot less laughable to look at. So weak editing, lame story, bad storytelling, outdated picture quality, horrendous special effects. This all make it apparent that these guys never went to film school and also just had no experience on the movie making field at all. They probably had seen a couple of Hollywood action movies and tried to mimic it as best as they could but they simply neither had the experience or the resources to successfully accomplish it. But I have to give the movie it that it never bores. There also is really something going on and indeed it's being action packed. Not with good action but with action nevertheless. In that regard this also really isn't the worst amateur like movie within its genre to watch and at least is also being one you can have some fun with watching. Often not because of how good it is, quite the opposite of that but you'll have fun nevertheless. 4/10

Better then any action movie to date
grapplerguy24 February 2017
Have you ever gone to a movie expecting bloody action and absolutely beautiful chaos, and just been so disappointed you wish you had never gone to see said movie in the first place? Well Who killed Captain Alex will not disappoint you, and is the best action movie of all time, with blood, guns, and absolute chaos all while a clearly unstable man narrates it and speaks about whats going on in the movie, what movie you're watching just in case you're an Alzheimer's patient, or just plain gibberish because of how epic this movie is.

Isaac Nabwana is my hero!
danielemerson13 January 2018
This movie gets 10/10 for value for money, relentless action, riotous humour and pre-empting movie riffers by coming with a built-in 'video joker' (VJ Emmie), whose wild and sometimes tangential interjections make an already entertaining film even more fun.

It gets a few stars knocked off for the general incoherence of the plot but it is all so enjoyable, I don't mind that much.

This was made for $200 and no, I didn't miss out a few zeroes. A feature-length film, made with resourcefulness, imagination, passion and a bunch of local martial arts enthusiasts for $200 is one in the eye for far more pricey productions that plod from cliché to humbug to narcissism and round again.

Isaac Nabwana, aka Nabwana IGG, sold everything he had, to buy a camcorder. He cobbled together a computer from spare parts for editing. And by the way, when it comes to editing, he knocks Michael Bay out of the park when it comes to action scenes.

We should all support the efforts of Wakaliwood and people like them, because their clear love for what they do is so refreshing in a dead-eyed world of movie-making by algorithm.

Who did kill Captain Alex??
jamesgalllla26 February 2017
I really liked this movie because it is very special and unique and pretty funny actually. It must have been hard for the director to make this movie because of where he was filming it and at what time. Great job! Yet it still remains a mystery... Who did kill Captain Alex? Good movie.

i think this movies is commando
lauchlanunger7 May 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I think this movie had a great story line with the Mafia, the panther and the tiger all fight in on movie!!! how great is that very commando. 10 out of 10 the movie consists of war lords fighting over drugs I think it is very action. The movie uses state of the art effects that make me thrilled for another release, this movie puts me in the moment and makes me and my little brother feel like real commandos is the jungle of Africa. the cons of this movie is that I think the could of had more commando rolls to make it seem like more of an army realistic movie. The movie is a great family watch if you enjoy great visual effects, action and realistic fight scenes but be warned this movie contains many fight scenes that could make you a bit overwhelmed.

A rare gem created by even rarer circumstances
coasterdude4430 September 2020
I thoroughly enjoyed "Who Killed Captain Alex?" and find it inspiring how a movie like this could be made. The film is dripping with homemade passion and dedication and shows that you don't need a big budget or stellar special effects to create a kickass and entertaining "action packed movie"

The story of how Captain Alex was made is as interesting as it is inspiring. The film was made on a measly budget of $200 and was only possible when a poor community in Uganda were able to afford a film camera and computer with editing software aswell as green screen compositing and special effects software. It goes to show that even with almost no money and bare bones equipment, when you have a passionate crew and director who has a legitimate vision, a truly awesome and entertaining film can be made.

The video joker was an ingenious addition and is what was the cherry on top of the cake for me. It's reminiscent of MST3K and Rifftrax where a person riffs and quips as well as comedically remarks over the film.

I finished watching the movie for the first time just a few hours ago and I can already tell that this is a movie that is going to get better and better with each viewing. The editing is a little bit choppy in some areas but that's the only real complaint I have about the movie. You would think the extremley low budget special effects would be a bad thing, but in this movie they have a charm of their own.

Anyway, this is a film that almost never existed, but I'm so happy it does and wish Nabwana I.G.G. all the best with his Wakailiwood company and hope it continues to grow financially as more and more people know about his movies and continue to support them.

Also I want Video Joker to riff more movies XD

Like Nothing You've Ever Seen Before, Any Upcoming Filmmakers must watch this
m0nkhouse11 August 2017
Looking at this film it is obviously a terribly made one, amongst ones like Birdemic, The Room, and Fateful Findings. The reason why it different from them though it is because of how undeniably entertaining it is, and the passion by the people behind it. This film really is like NOTHING you've ever seen before. It was made with a budget of 200$ in a third world impoverished country, were clean water is a luxury, with constant strikes and the cast being in fear of danger, by a director who has never been in a movie theater in his life. They're sole purpose was to make a kickass action movie, to entertain, and it succeeds in every way possible.

Passion and true entertainment is what this movie clearly has, and it is something that today's film industry truly lacks, where everything is involved somehow by a huge company and for the sake of a profit, commercialism, or to make it into a never ending franchise. If the director and the people involved in this film had to give everything and did the impossible to make this happen, whats really stopping people like us from picking up a camera and start recording?

I absolutely love this movie, and everyone who is an aspiring filmmaker of any sorts has to watch this.

It's one of the worst movies I've ever seen. But that's what's great about it.
annonymouscritic3 June 2017
The entire movie is utter insanity. It's definitely entertaining and the Video Joker had me laughing a lot. But the entire movie is so god awful that it actually comes across as funny and decent. It was made in Uganda so that's why the camera quality and audio and effects aren't that good, but my god, you can see that they tried really hard and the actors looked like they were having a lot of fun. So I'm happy for them. It's a terrible terrible movie but it just has so much effort put in to it and it has a lot of charm and I was actually near peeing my pants at some points because of how ridiculous it is. I would definitely recommend this movie if you want a fun movie to watch. Don't watch it if you want a quality film, this movie is bad but it's so ridiculous that it comes across as charming and funny.

Truly a masterpiece
Markoos_Esnell14 January 2019
Who Killed Captain Alex is the best movie that has ever existed in the history of mankind. The budget of 200$, the beautiful voice acting, the stunning visuals and the captivating plot all makes this not only the best movie, but also the greatest piece of art that has ever been created by humans.

Who killed Captain Alex is also a great comedy while also being a tradegy, where you really feel strong connections and emotions to the brave soldiers who died in the shooting scenes. The effects are also wonderful with beautiful action scenes and gunfights with amazing sound effects.

Now let's talk about the voice acting in this movie and holy macaroni this movie deliveries. You can really hear the effort the actors put in this movie, especially the combat scenes. One part that comes to mind when talking about the best voice acting in a movie and that is when the Panthers loudly proclaims "OooohWahOooOohhWooWeeeMamaMiaWoOohh".

I won't talk about the plot because I don't want to spoil this masterpiece and I want you to enjoy this beautiful movie by yourself or with your friends, Just remember, this movie, the best thing that has ever been created, was made with a 200$ budget.

Indie and endearing
gbill-7487712 July 2020
It's probably crazy for me to review this film, made on an incredibly low budget and like a creative home movie project, originally meant for enjoyment with friends or certainly a small circle. Ten years later, I'm going to critique it while sitting on my entitled ass in America? It's a miracle of modern times I even saw it. I'll just say it's not really my genre, with all of the testosterone-fueled gun battles, but I liked the 'Ugandan Bruce Lee' (Bruce U), the helicopter sequences, and the funny running commentary from the VJ ("Action is coming!"). The song lyrics at end to his grandma are pretty cool too:

"This song is a gift, dearest Grandma. You took care of me as if I were your own child. You taught me to work hard to be responsible. You found money for school fees, even though it was difficult. And you always made sure I had enough to eat. I remember the dark days of the war. Soldiers would force open anyone's doors. They yelled 'panda gari kwanza kwanza' [Google: ride the car first] and threw you in a truck. No chance of escape, bullets and blood always flow. But you made sure I was safe and held me with tenderness - and we survived."

jholloway-3773317 June 2016
The action is the best and most intense I have ever scene in any film ever. The action will blow you away with its scenes which are no longer than it needs to be. The version with the narrator makes the film especially enjoyable. He adds a whole new dimension to the film. Even though it is not in English it is still enjoyable. The cgi was groundbreaking for Uganda and the whole world. The comedy is top notch. The whole film is on YouTube and you need to watch it now. It is only 1 hour long but it is a great watch. A must see. 10/10 stars. Everyone needs to see this. And to finish this a quote from the movie. "Everyone in Uganda knows kung-fu." - Who killed captain Alex 2k10

Action Packed Movie
theringingguy27 February 2017
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is great. It's filmed in a third world country, none of the actors are good, and the cinematography is terrible. It's a "so bad, it's good" kind of movie. First off, yes, it's filmed in Uganda and the people filming and acting are trying their best with what they got. So you can appreciate the fact that they were really trying hard to make a decent movie here. The plot in this movie (at least from how I understood it) is pretty much that some super cop-soldier guy named Captain Alex was called in to take out this group of criminals, called the Tiger Mafia. Somehow he gets killed and they call in his Brother who has some Bruce Lee style fighting skills to avenge his death(he's even called the Ugandan Bruce Lee!). That's really all I could understand from what I saw. The plot was very confusing for me to keep up with, so much so that the VJ (Video Joker) guy even doesn't seem to know what's going on. The genuinely great moments in this movie are the action packed ones like the fighting scenes or when they're running through some bushes shooting AK's. They actually seem like they know what they're doing for the fighting moments and the choreography is surprisingly very well pulled off, even better so then Hollywood A- list movies without cuts and editing to piece the movements together. They also seem to do a good job on the prop department(except for some things such as helicopters or other tricky special effects methods). However, this movie being made so amateurishly means that it isn't going to be a good movie by any means unless it's in the wrong ways. I recommend this movie to anyone who loves B movies and especially recommend to get tanked or really high before watching it. It's a fine example of when shitty movies can be enjoyable like any other movie. It truly is DA best of DA best. -theringingguy (I wrote this review in mind that you already knew what the movie was.)

Most hilarious movie video of all time!
fishielemondude1 March 2017
Who Killed Captain Alex is about black people who are filming a fake movie, this is why it was uploaded to YouTube because it looks better.

Roses are red Violets are blue Everyone in Uganda knows kung fu

also, IHE brought me here because It's not that worst I mean the movie is in the different island called Uganda in Africa, the movie take place when there's special effects, more violence and a guy who is doing a joke at the microphone. It was made with Premiere Pro, so Premiere Pro had the best editing software on earth, there are a tons of S#*ty movies when they used Premiere Pro and Old Camera's, wow what a masterpiece how they try to take effort or using subtitle's that are a mistake when they are talking to behind the scenes and a black guy makes a funny voice. I recommend if you watch it to YouTube because don't waste money for buying a DVD just merchandise like T-Shirt's, Gifts and Poster's at the website if you can check out supastore.wakaliwood.com if you need to watch the video and go to YouTube and rip it on a format website and put it on your computer, Captain Alex is a legendary as can be.

The Budget from the movie was $200 and that's how lower it was with the amount of audience, This video will get more views and get his channel 100,000 subs

Action 9/10

Camera 10/10
